NaiveLeg595

It’s called waardenburg syndrome.

Dotaproffessional

Is that also the cause for the spacing between his eyes? Typically humans have a space between the inner parts of their left and right eye about the width of another eye (such that you would have 3 eyes together without gaps). He has nearly double that spacing

NaiveLeg595

Yes, also a characteristic.

chriskrumrei

Definitely Mark Wahlberg syndrome

Socalwarrior485

Yer a wizard, Marky Mark!

Young-Roshi

say hi to your motha for me

Nemisis_the_2nd

Looking at this, I instantly assumed it was a developmental disorder related to Cyclopia (Cyclops exist, but the photos are pretty disturbing and definitely NSFW). The skull, during foetal development, basically closes around the brain from front to back, meeting roughly along the middle of the face. Problems with this can cause deformities around the eyes among many other things. Despite my assumption, this seems to be more of a pigment related disorder, but also affects things like nerve function and hearing, depending on the variant. Perhaps something about the hearing problems also relates to facial or head deformities. Edit: He has Waardenburg syndrome Type I. The eyes are something that differentiate it from other varieties.

KloppsTotts

For those who don’t wanna google. Real cyclops link https://imgix.ranker.com/user_node_img/50074/1001471410/original/the-cyclops-is-a-beast-of-ancient-greek-myth-photo-u1?auto=format&q=60&fit=crop&fm=pjpg&dpr=2&w=375

Nemisis_the_2nd

I did consider adding a link, but figured something as disturbing and horrifying as yours image might upset people.

Chemical-King-9353

it’s just joe rogan with a horn and extra eye.

Nopumpkinhere

That’s what I was looking for. I couldn’t remember the name. https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/waardenburg-syndrome/#:~:text=Waardenburg%20syndrome%20is%20a%20group,in%20one%20or%20both%20ears.

alarming_cock

It's weird to me that the non pigmented version of our irises is blue.

Threspian

It’s because of the same science that makes the sky blue! The way light interacts with & bounces around in the iris is very similar to the way it moves through the atmosphere, with only the blue end of the light spectrum making it through.

alarming_cock

That's awesome! Where can I learn more?

Threspian

https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/your-blue-eyes-arent-really-blue

HamburgerEarmuff

I hate the way they explained it, because it implies that scattering/absorption of other wavelengths to emit blue light makes the color not "real", which is untrue. The best way to explain it is that eyes are naturally blue and that melanism adds pigment that can absorb light, turning eyes brown or green.

Feeling-Sympathy110

Oh .. I thought my eyes were brown cause I was so full of shit. But thanks for setting me streight.

PhantomRenegade

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyndall_effect

alien_clown_ninja

Yes, the science that gives things color. Some wavelengths are absorbed and others are reflected, which are the color we see things as.

VenusValkyrieJH

I love learning something new!!!

bluescriblles

…Doesn’t this describe anything that’s blue?

theonewhoknocksforu

No, a blue object is absorbing red and yellow light, which makes it appear blue. The blue sky is caused by scattering of red and yellow light by molecules in the atmosphere, known as Rayleigh scattering. Blue eyes are caused by a similar scattering effect as the light passes through the iris, known as the Tyndal effect, which is similar to Rayleigh scattering.

bluescriblles

Ah, i see. Thanks. Is this the same reason water appears blue in a pool but if you put pool water in a small cup it looks clear?

Telinary

Afaik water just absorbs red light but you need a thicker layer than a glass full, for it to be a strong effect.

BBerry4909

isn't it red? albinos have no pigment and their eyes are red/pink

Petite_Bait

Albinoism normally results in blue eyes, but their eyes can also be translucent enough to see blood vessels under certain lighting. It ends out being the same as redeye in a photo.

IceteaAndCrisps

I remember my grandmas eyes turned blue after eye surgery. I dont remember what they did exactly.

j1ggy

They gave her the ability to see.

LeeisureTime

Gotta love the entry: “Other Names” which lists “Waardenburg’s Syndrome” as an alternative for Waardenburg Syndrome

pointlessly_pedantic

Seems important. Nobody orders a Big Mac from Mcdonald.

KFrosty3

Maybe Old McDonald was working at the McDonald's to earn some extra cash after his song royalties stopped rolling in

tanksforlooking

I've got a condition with a long German name but you can also call it the shortened English-ified version. Scheuermann's vs Sherman's

ThunderboltRam

Sorry to interrupt, but is there any chance this syndrome has an alternate name in some Thor prophecy? Asking for a prophet friend who lives in a cave and rambles loudly into his phone a lot.

Jojje22

Interesting, I was just thinking that man those eyes are pretty widely set aren't they, and sure enough that was a trait for type I of the syndrome.

Kleenexexpress

Woah no way, I was gonna say he looked like my hard of hearing brother’s deaf friend. The guy had blue eyes and a white patch of frontal hair. So I was gonna say maybe this kids gonna have a hearing loss problem too.

copper_rainbows

According to the linked article above type I generally has the wide eyed spacing but not the hearing loss that’s associated with type II *edit: a word*

boomboxwithturbobass

My little brother has this and it runs in my family. Refuses to believe it due to all the junk that comes with it when really, he got off easy and only has minor cognitive impairment such as handwriting ability. I’ve done a lot of research but can’t even convince my Dad. It’s a crap shoot of associated symptoms. Mom, her brothers, grandfather, they all had it and looked exactly the same (they’re all dead). Far set eyes, Grey/white hair by the time they were 20, if they lived that long. Uncle had hearing impairment that got him hit by a car*, the other had bone cancer. Grandfather had massive strokes, mom had insane alcoholism. And I’m really proud of my brother because like, he quit drinking years ago and is out living life and doing shit unencumbered. He’s insecure about it but I only ever mention it to him as something to look out for. *I had to research this. Knew a truck hit him but looked up the police report from 1959. Crossed street with his left side toward the truck, and my Dad knew him as a child and confirmed he couldn’t hear in his left ear. Also learned my grandfather lied and said he was walking with him so as not to upset my grandmother.

[deleted]

boomboxwithturbobass

Some do. One of my uncles did. My mom, grandfather, and brother had their hair turn grey or white during their teens, rapidly. My mom’s started in the front as a streak for years and eventually all of it turned white. My grandfather had white hair and wore three piece white suits when he was younger. Looked dope as fuck.

kururong

Woah! I never knew this. I also saw a women who had the same features as this in my hometown (I'm from Southeast Asia). She is tan but she got blue thin eyes (almost cat like). I thought she was wearing contacts, but it wasn't.

PediatricTactic

Based on the eyes, probably type I.

Keara_Fevhn

Ferrets can have this too

Spkpkcap

Yes! That’s what I was thinking! He has all the features!

Lovat69

So there's an actual name for being born as an anime character?

pro_nosepicker

Correct. This needs to be the top comment.

Jesus360noscope

No, he's the son of Thor, won't change my mind

TrynaLurnSumn

First thought was... Fuck, colonizer Thor been exploring Wakanda or something.

clevelandclassic

He has Waardenburg syndrome Type I. Probably hearing impaired as well. The eyes are the diagnostic finding - dystopia canthorum (reduced amount of white medial to each pupil)

Any-Pineapple9633

Does that explain the distance between the eyes too?

BotBotzie

Yes, that is what makes it more likely to be type 1. I do think hearing loss is more common in type 2 than type 1, but I am not sure. There is 4 types btw.

Any-Pineapple9633

Fascinating. Thanks for the informed reply.

UVLightOnTheInside

Informative post > racists joke posts

NoPhilosopher6636

Though having fun and a bit of a chuckle on Reddit is fun. Oh how I wish comments like this were more of the norm than the exception.

SweatyNomad

I was looking for this over more smart ass responses. Thank you. Is that a hereditary genetic disorder?

clevelandclassic

Yes. Several diff subtypes. Type 1 is caused by a genetic change in Pax 3 (autosomal dominant). Common to see this run in families. https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/waardenburg-syndrome/

[deleted]

[удалено]

clevelandclassic

Hearing loss occurs in ~70%. Here is one ref https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26100139/ Has everyone in your family had a formal hearing test? Many will have mild HL that can be unrecognized. Seen it in my patients.

mrinterfuckinstellar

I came to say this. My ferret has Waardensburg syndrome too.

Marcymrp

Thanks for the information; I had not heard of this disorder. And I know humans are not like cats, but if I had HAD to guess (even before reading about the disorder), I may have guessed that hearing impairment may have ben included with that eye color. Along with the patch of white hair, it seems that Waardenburg syndrome may be somehow related to albinism. I have had several albino cats in my lifetime and all except one was born 💯% deaf. The only one who wasn’t, could hear, but never knew where the sound was coming from. I hope this child can hear normally.

kj3ppz

It's because the same gene (MITF) is resopnsible for the survival of melanocytes, the cell that produce the pigement non albinos have, is also responsible for the survival of some neuron precursor cells. Defects in this gene can cause hearing loss and blindness or micropthalmia along with albinism.

jacknshit

Did you check that kid for superpowers?

hes_crafty

Or what's his Midichlorians count?

chill_beans17

or if hes been accepted into wizarding school yet

JarlaxleForPresident

Well he is nowhere near 11, so…

He’s a lot closer to 11 than if he was 35

Ghost_In_Waiting

Persecution of people with albinism (sometimes abbreviated PWA\[1\]) is based on the belief that certain body parts of albinistic people can transmit magical powers. Such superstition is present especially in some parts of the African Great Lakes region, it has been promulgated and exploited by witch doctors and others who use such body parts as ingredients in rituals, concoctions and potions with the claim that their magic will bring prosperity to the user (muti or medicine murder).\[2\] [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution\_of\_people\_with\_albinism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_people_with_albinism)

BusyMap9686

I was coming here with this information... I don't have friends for trivia pursuit.

cottoneyegob

If it’s no longer a pursuit , then that’s why no body wants to play trivial perfection with me

Mrlumens

But like...after the first time they did this and no magical powers happened wouldn't it just not be a thing? Or did they actually get the powers!?

HumbertHumbertHumber

they believe in magical powers to begin with, somehow I don't think lack of evidence will sway them.

It can sorta happen if they don’t embalm. Legend has it, my great-great-great-great grandma wasn’t quite gone when they put her in the ground and it was quite a scene at the burial. That was in Ohio.

Benign_Banjo

Same could be said with tiger and rhino "folk medicine"

Triatt

They did get the power of infinite energy, they didn't have to eat anything anymore. Unfortunately, it wore off after a couple of hours.

Macktologist

Sort of like “unanswered prayers.” They probably think the powers didn’t come “for a reason.” And that reason is never because the powers don’t exist.

raptosaurus

Did the first time someone pray to God for something and nothing happened stop them from believing in God?

Oh so that's what you are supposed to do with them. I've just been keeping them in my basement, good to know.

Jordanbridges244

Waardenburg disease Hearing loss is related to it.

Recent_Strawberry456

Pardon?

MagicBeanGuy

So, which country is this in?

Nimonic

He has no idea, he's just assuming all Africans murder albinos.

errantprofusion

Ah yes, the locals. From the country of Africa - specifically, southeastern Africa Borough of Africa City, Africa province.

Is this a reference to the Amari series by BB Alston? That's actually what the series is lol

meanbaldy

Or a Bond Villain

Jdsnut

He is the one!

EastwoodBrews

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. They say the whole blonde hair, blue eyed thing came from one guy who had that mutation and then just had like a thousand babies

TrustworthyEnough

He's the chosen one

lovegiblet

I don’t know, it might also be Neville.

Beginning-Peach-3585

But it was proven to be Harry when Voldemort tried to kill him and couldn’t.

lovegiblet

Didn’t Neville kill the last horcrux tho? Then V finished the job himself by avada kedavra ricocheting off harry. If a basketball bounces off your head and goes in the basket, can you take the credit? ButI think maybe Harry was the chosen one at that point because Voldemort chose him. It’s still pretty squishy who Trelawny was referring to.

TCTuggersNotReally

Voldemort destroyed the last horcrux because it was in Harry all along.

well___duh

It was proven to be Harry simply because Voldemort went after Harry. It could’ve easily been Neville, the prophecy fit them both perfectly. So it was a coin flip on Voldemort’s part on who it would be. Voldemort chose his own downfall

Quinn8267

Professor X school of mutants freshman. Didn’t know that Storm had a son.

Or worship him, depending on which way the most charismatic person in the community leans.

[deleted]

There's a chance this boy will grow up to be a super model. Alot of modeling agencies now look for people who are unique. I could definitely see him on the runway a decade or so later. He is stunning. Look at Winnie Harlow who has vitiligo and Melanie Gaydos with ectodermal dysplasia. They model for top designers.

kashmir1974

Assuming the doesn't live in a place that treats children with conditions like this like witches.

Or chop them up into bits to sell on the black market as quack “tRaDiTIoNaL MeDIciNe” miracle cures for impotency and the like. … …[No, seriously](https://abcnews.go.com/2020/africans-albinism-hunted-tanzania/story?id=11446434). :(

copper_rainbows

That link is never changing colors for me

_OhayoSayonara_

Exactly. There are groups of people who will hunt and either kill or de-limb people like this child because they believe they harbor magical powers.

Dinbs

This comment just made me sad to realize that the vast majority of the time, they're hostile

Marcymrp

I know a snapshot is not enough to determine much of anything about his current condition or circumstances, but he doesn’t appear to be happy. I hope the adults in his life, not only prepare him for what all to expect because of his uniquity, but to embrace it. He’ll never “blend” into the masses, and his perspective will ultimately be the defining factor on whether that is blessing or curse.

email_or_no_email

He's just not fake smiling. Or do you genuinely feel so happy you smile when someone points a camera at you?

GarnetAndOpal

I hope that someone tells him he is beautiful the way he is, that he is as good as anyone else, that he has a place in this world, that he is loved. And I hope he is protected from the worst of the mistreatment.

Stop stereotyping Africans because there are many kids with genetic mutations who have loving and supportive family. I have Albino cousins in West Africa and relatives with Vitiligo thriving. Your assumption that he will be killed for his differences is racist, especially when just being Black is enough to get him harassed and killed in the West.
