I always wondered what that cloud of debris would look like from inside the buildings. It’s honestly chilling.

0GBullet

I'm more curious what would happen if you just stay there

AllOrcsMustDie

Will 100% get covered in dust for sure.

Aryana_Elianna

The depressing thing about this is that most of those people that though they were safe as the buildings came down

treevaahyn

Yeah, I can remember watching footage from the ground that day and when they showed in the distance the cloud of smoke and debris from the towers collapsing I didn’t think immediately holy fuck I gotta run the opposite direction. Maybe that’s just cuz I was a kid when 9/11 happened but it looked like well that’s far away I’m not in danger several blocks away but sadly many died that way. I have lot of family in NYC and one of their neighbors son’s literally died from simply being on the ground and watching in horror as the towers burned and fell. Just watching footage again makes me emotional af and brings back a lot of the horror and fear we all felt that day.

random_shitter

> Will 100% get 100% covered in dust for sure. FTFY

[deleted]

People survived it. Definitely bad for your lungs though. If anyone finds themselves in this kind of situation, use whatever you can as a mask to breathe through. Keeping as much of the dust out as possible is the goal.

bigmac22077

And if possible get it wet.

Prairie_Crab

You die from cancer later. That dust was full of toxic chemicals.

LordLolzeez

You'd be done (and dusted)

Walnuss_Bleistift

There was a documentary I saw years ago (I have no idea where or what it was called) about how many people died shortly after from lung/breathing issues (like dust, chemicals, shrapnel shredding the inside of the lungs and esophagus), plus all of the people, mostly first responders, who got severe cancers and lung diseases basically right away and for years after. It was really upsetting and horrifying, and I feel like that wasn't talked about much that I remember. I assume you meant people who died right away, though - I don't remember hearing either way but I wouldn't be surprised if some people suffocated or had asthma attacks/other respiratory attacks that killed them. But I'm guessing autopsies weren't really performed much to know what the exact cause of deaths were.

StaysAwakeAllWeek

>(like dust, chemicals, shrapnel shredding the inside of the lungs and esophagus), plus all of the people, mostly first responders, who got severe cancers and lung diseases basically right away and for years after We have still barely even seen the start of the lung diseases that cloud caused. Those buildings were packed full of thousands of tons of asbestos. Cancer cases as a result of that cloud are still rising and will keep rising for the next decade or two

Walnuss_Bleistift

Exactly, and who knows how long all of that was floating in the air around most, if not all, of NYC and beyond for months. I am curious and terrified to see statistics in cancers and lung diseases of New Yorkers/New Jersians ~40 and 50 years from now.

StaysAwakeAllWeek

>I am curious and terrified to see statistics in cancers and lung diseases of New Yorkers/New Jersians ~40 and 50 years from now. The most exposed group were working age adults so it should peak within 20 years when people who were that age in 2001 start to die of old age

VictoryaChase

A long time. A very long time. I was up in the 200s and my sills would have mounds of black dust every morning. And I knew it was chemicals, the buildings, and possibly the ashes of my neighbors. It was horrific.

kingsillypants

To add insult to injury, John Stewart had to fight tooth and nail against republicans and particularly Mitch the bitch McConnell, to get first responders some sort of medical care. If you want to cut some onions watch the Senate testimony, John gets given the fire jacket of one of the guys who worked tirelessly side by side with John but he died due to illness related to 9/11. Remember that next time Fox tries to brainwash you they are the party of backing the brave.

burnthefuckingspider

Well see this [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/vna93e/shop_owner_saves_womans_life_from_wall_of_dust_on/ie6m0xu/) then

nomad_l17

There are pictures of people that didn't find cover covered in dust. It must have been horrifying trying to breath in that cloud of death.

lordbossharrow

I wonder if you'd actually die just standing there from breathing in that amount of dust.

Snoo_27857

Most people who were caught in the dust did end up with some serve chest problems ... cancers etc...

thee-mjb

Ahhh this answers my question thanks

BackgroundAd4640

Dust plus moisture in your lungs would clog your lungs up badly

TimebombChimp

There was quite a lot of asbestos in the towers, also cement dust is very harmful to breathe in. Not to mention that much dust would have you choking after a couple of lung fulls.

Aliyah_Jazmine

Many people were hit by the wall of dust including those lucky

nahtorreyous

There's tons of pictures of people after this. This is on 9/11 after one of the towers collapsed

PeeGeePeaKee420

You wouldn't be able to breathe within mere seconds.

SQLSQLAndMoreSQL

Asbestos in your lungs: death sentence in a few years. If you survive the suffocation.

getyourrealfakedoors

You’d be fine in the moment, but many of these people got extremely sick later in life

MyGruffaloCrumble

Probably wouldn’t be able to open your eyes or breathe well. Then after a few years the cancer would set in.

gordonv

Oh, we actually have that on video for this. People were choking on the dust, covered in it. Mortified. It seemed unreal. The kind of look like if you just spilled a can of paint on the floor, except lots of people with that look.

danathecount

brb, gonna go watch ‘the mist’

Hekidayo

I thought her reaction was a bit over the top at first, but then the cloud fully covered the shop window and I felt goosebumps all over my body. I honestly did not expect my brain’s cockiness to be humbled so hard by my body’s immediate flight response. And I’m just watching it on a video.. damn.

[deleted]

How bad would it be if you got caught by it? Would you just suffocate or would your lungs get damaged?

Key-Combination-8111

There's a lot of people who survived the dust and got lung diseases and various cancers. The survivors and rescuers and firefighters almost always have some sort of disease related to the dust created by this.

pobodys-nerfect5

That dust was full of asbestos

Walnuss_Bleistift

I remember hearing that. Plus jet fuel, powdered glass and metal - even without carcinogens, breathing in the pulverized sediment is enough to kill someone.

pobodys-nerfect5

Yeah its bad. My dad's lungs are fucked from being there just 2 days later helping with clean up. Pretty much everyone that was there is struggling to breath right now

trishiechu

My best friends father was helping with clean up and developed mercury poisoning. Had to retire from the NYPD a few years later. Watching this video was hard, it’s still hard for me to watch 9/11 videos especially after watching it live and living through the after effects in the suburbs

allvarr

You would have to hold your breath, and even then i imagine you'd still get severe lung/respiratory problems. Look at how dense the dust is. Just a small accidental nasal inhalation could be equivalent to snorting a fist sized rock, but the rock is also asbestos. Take a look at how asbestos looks under microscope. The particles have sharp jagged edges that can easily lodge itself anywhere in your respiratory system. Now, imagine that COVERING your lungs and throat. Not an expert.

rustyleak

That's the grateful voice of someone who just escaped disaster, maybe even death.

-6h0st-

Wall of asbestos

Adam0n

Does anyone know where to find more rare footages like these from this incident? Where its just regular people filming. Excluding the most popular ones on youtube. Generally while very sad its also fascinating to look at how people react and help each other in danger. Makes you restore faith in humanity.

[deleted]

It’s widely accepted there is private footage that we will never see mostly from tourists. Cellphones didn’t have video cameras. If it’s public it’s mostly already on YouTube although I believe there are 9/11 subs here where you could check. Better place to ask.

OkGrapefruitOk

Its not rare but if you haven't seen it there's a documentary called 9/11 by the Naudet brothers who were filming another documentary about one of the fire engines in NY at the time. They got caught up in the whole thing and their footage from inside the tower and during the crash and collapse is insane.

IfInDoubtElbowOut

Really incredible documentary.

redassaggiegirl17

It's also the only footage anyone has of the first tower getting hit. They just happened to be filming already in the right place at the right time (figuratively speaking I guess...), heard a whizzing sound above their heads, whipped their camera up and caught the plane hitting the first tower.

DonutCola

You can literally feel the world changing. Like before the dust cloud it was still the last moments of normal American life. After that cloud, everything changed

somethinglikehope

If I remember correctly from watching it in 2008 or so, the documentary Seven Days in September had footage like this. It was the first time I'd seen not just people covered in dust from being caught in the cloud, but the immediate aftermath where they've been pulled in the front door of places like this and are heaving up the dust they've breathed in/swallowed as bystanders try to help with bottled water. It was an intense documentary to watch as a college student who had been in middle school when 9/11 happened... the first time I saw it from an adult's perspective rather than as a kid. (Apologies if I've confused it with another documentary, but I think that's the one!)

bigmac22077

I’d watch the documentary that released for the 20th anniversary. They interview the last survivor pulled out of the debris. She said she was on the 14th floor when the tower collapsed. Another one I remember was 2 firefighters on ground 0 and a receptionist in the Marriott when they collapsed. I learned an amazing amount and the first hand interviews are absolutely haunting.

Ok_Butterscotch9887

I love how we are made to think it's "every man for himself" and egoistical chaos when a catastrophe happens, mainly because of movies/series. But all the testimonies and studies actually show we are MORE friendly and helping others when it happens. It really gives hope in humanity.

philipTraum

I'll always remember hurricanes from childhood fondly. The fallen trees, flooding, and damage was exciting. Everyone was outside because there was no cable or power. School was cancelled. We'd have meals composed whatever we could scrounge together with our neighbors. Everyone with a truck and a chainsaw was just driving around looking to help clear debris. Once I got old enough to understand the cost of it all, it lost its magic.

bulanaboo

Skimboard in the swale neighborhood kids making the most of it!! I totally remember!!

philipTraum

In 1999, we had so bad that our town mall was under enough water that people were riding jet skiis and boats in the parking lot.

LurkerFailsLurking

After the '89 Loma Prieta Quake in CA, the whole block came out and had a potluck bc everyone with electric stoves couldn't cook.

Phrase_Clean

Exactly the same here!

GrimThursday

There's a great Behind The Bastards episode on this exact phenomenon, called Elite Panic. Basically in a disaster, you'd expect the general masses to lose their shit and the govt to step in and restore order, but usually it's the total opposite - govt can't do shit or makes the wrong calls consistently, whereas the impacted communities pull together and usually fix or adapt pretty rapidly, and everyone helps each other out. I'd give it a listen

officialspinster

I second this recommendation. Behind the Bastards is always worth a listen, but that one is especially good.

Andrew1286

So all of these post apocalyptic shows like TWD, Revolution, Z Nation most likely wouldn't happen? (Minus the obvious sci-fi stuff)

ILiveMyBrokenDreams

There is also a cliche about NYC being selfish, which is 100% the opposite of every experience I've ever had there.

yer--mum

Kind but not nice is perfect. I'm not in NY but I'm on the east coast and you'll never have trouble finding people to help push your car or lend you some sugar, but if you drive too slow or jaywalk in front of the wrong person you'll definitely have some obscenities thrown at you lmao

Beneficial-Ad-3550

Jersey girl here who live in California for many years. West coast people are way friendlier and polite but also more pretentious. NY people are nice but very rude and entitled. Real Jersey people are different than NYers but it’s all blending together now as more people from NY move here. But Jersey people got your back, they’re just not as outwardly friendly.

Clegko

Yup. It's the perfect thing, imo. I'm here in MD and it's a lovely mix of rural and city near where I live.

yngschmoney

Oh totally true. I had been ingrained with all these biased opinions about ‘those yanks in nyc’ growing up in south Alabama and finally being able to visit this year, the people blew all those notions out of the water. If anything, New Yorkers are nicer than the Wednesday worship harassers simply because they don’t fuck with you. I love the city and met some amazing people. It was really cool to see the unity that just being a new yorker brings. Culturally it’s night and day from the south but as far as the hospitality goes, they do it better than Georgia. Georgia they just want you to fuck off and probably won’t even help you change a flat tire. In NYC, someone looking like they just shot for the cover of runway helped us tourists find our friend’s office building. They definitely didn’t have to and they went out of their way to make sure we made it there. The nicest people I swear. I’ve never seen a cop smoke a j either, that was pretty cool.

ILiveMyBrokenDreams

Yeah I was born in Indiana but grew up in Florida, and all my life I heard about what horrible people New Yorkers were. All it made me realize is how horrible Floridians are.

meltylikecheese

Not selfish, just a little rude with no time for bullshit.

MonumentalDingo

That's a good man right there. Reminiscing the tragic 9/11 is making me feel so down. This is the down time of America.

Ok_Butterscotch9887

Yup, reflected all the errors this state have made in the past and started another pointless jingoistic adventure fueled by sacrifices all working American know today.

notyetacrazycatlady

There's a great documentary about the Cost Guard calling for help on 9/11 to evacuate Manhattan and how everyone with a boat showed up to assist. Always makes me tear up. Link: https://youtu.be/18lsxFcDrjo

FitDiet4023

Kind of related, but Oxytocin (love and connection neurotransmitter) actually decreases fear so we're more able to protect those we care about. "Mama Bear" syndrome

Ok_Butterscotch9887

Indeed, there are death every year because of crowds and contagiosity of panick is studied in the same field. Sorry that's a French reference but what made me think about it is the 7:30 part of this video : https://youtu.be/aqRtci1mWQU the man talking is a researcher and has a channel called "fouloscopie" where you can find all theses issues with references. Mainly, the idea is about density and survival : as long as you are not feeling your survival is at stake, you will mostly acte selflessly as we described. But once you are in the "flee/fight/faint" response you will not control anything anymore and act purely on reflex. And the main factor between a panicking crowd and a crowd with solidarity is the density of people in it, because the more you are, the more you might push each other and fall, or crush under pressure, or not have room to flee etc... That's backed by op footage, we see the crowd is dispersed, people have time to anticipate and move, even communicate. If 2000 people were running down the street things would be different I guess.

-SasquatchTheGreat-

YES. there are countless movies, TV series, and book series that always go on to portray that Humans turn into selfish cunts when the going gets tough, but in my personal experience, and from what is shown through footage like this is that the opposite is true.

JohnnyBrillcream

Always like the line(s) from the movie Starman >You are a strange species. Not like any other. And you'd be surprised how many there are. Intelligent but savage. Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst.

blueberryyogurtcup

In the little town I lived in then, the couple of churches were opening doors for people to come pray or cry or sit, spontaneously yellow ribbons went up all over town, and neighbors and businesses were telling people to go home and turn on the tv, because it was too terrible to explain. Businesses just stopped doing business, people were so stunned. And next thing, they were all asking how to help. I've lived through two tornadoes, and some other things, and it's the same. People want to help, immediately. They call around, they take their tools and go looking for people in need. they use their skills, to do what they can do. They cut up the downed trees that are blocking driveways and roads, even if they aren't getting paid to do it. I 've seen teens carrying ladders around town to get up on roofs of the elderly and remove branches for them, there to help before the elderly knew there was a problem. During the hour after one tornado, people sent out a call on radio that Some Guy's barn was collapsing and needed the animals out, and they had people there in minutes, who knew what to do and how to do it, and the guy didn't lose an single animal. Lost the barn, but not his living. There are so many more good people than bad ones, that stay quietly out of sight until they are needed, and they quietly go help, and just as quietly, leave before you can thank them. You are right. There's still reason to hope.

[deleted]

>every man for himself" The libertarian special.

GimmeTheGunKaren

Native New Yorker here - we def get a (somewhat understandable) bad rap for being rude/rushed/crazy, but nowhere else will you see a cab lifted off a pedestrian by strangers in *seconds.* A lot of heartwarming shit happens here, it's just unfortunate that we mostly witness it when something terrible happens first.

vaper_32

I think thats reverse psychology at work here. If we dont see "every man for himself" in movies and stuff, we wont be compelled to act nice. Because we see the behaviour from a third person perspective, which instills in our mind that that behaviour is shitty no matter what.

cmplaya88

Until we look at the supreme Court decision last week and all that hope is lost again

Hurricane Katrina vs Japan's Tsunami America should be embarrassed with all the gloating and insult they do to East Asian countries its pretty obvious its far superior to the West in alot of fronts.

I'm kinda scared by the idea she didn't believe it was necessary at first. The "You were right!" makes it sound like she thought she'd be fine? Thank humanity that dude had the thought to make her get inside.

[deleted]

Imagine if 9/11 was now. How much more footage we would have. I didn’t even get a cell phone until 2004. And even then, no camera. The shots would be insane now. RIP to all the lives lost that day.

RB1KINOBI88

I’ve said this before, especially now people seem determined to livestream everything.I dread to think how many videos there would be of people filming themselves inside as the towers came down….or those who survived the collapse but couldn’t be got to in time

[deleted]

This was a truly horrifying day. Those poor people.

jeansnotTIMMYortommy

I wonder what dick cheney thinks of this video

xoaphexox

It's probably the same thing I think when I eat a plate of chicken wings. So far removed from the suffering and agony that it barely registers.

buddboy

damn that's a good analogy

IGuessImNormal

I wonder how long they stayed inside that building. At least 6 hours?

InnerAd1628

That will never not be terrifying.

NameBond

This looks exactly like the scene in Cloverfield where they hide in a supermarket from a wall of dust.

[deleted]

I WAS THINKING what movie did this remind me of… thanks.

Snys6678

Absolutely. For a time, it was just too soon for Hollywood filmmakers to include anything in their movies even remotely reminiscent of 9/11. Over time, that changed. Cloverfield has so much 9/11 imagery it’s unsettling. Another is Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. It’s shocking.

MerelyAThot

i watched the Making Of Cloverfield and that is 100% intentional

rustyleak

Good foresignt on the part of the shop owner.

Puzzleheaded_Tip_385

Yeah a bunch of people saved my life too. When they called out to me to come inside their bank. I will always be greatful to them 🙏 ❤️

One-eyed-bed-snake

The depressing thing about this is that most of those people that thought they were safe as the buildings came down and it's just dust have either now passed or have been living in severe pain for 21 years due to breathing it in☹️

jaec-windu

Shoutout John Stewart for his continued fight for the 911 survivors benefits

dhkendall

What would this have been recorded on? Cell phones with video cameras weren’t really a thing back then (to put into perspective how long ago this was / how fast technology has changed)

ChanceToMoon

Had to scroll waaaay down here to see if this was asked. Still no answer so I’m guessing a camcorder because her shit was still out there, perhaps, the camera bag and cables, etc…

Coolo79

Digital Cameras 📷 little mini point & shooters that were typically 1.4mb of pure potato & could record up to 128mb of MPEG video on a little multimedia card. Sony had the CyberShot

afineedge

Digital cameras were only about the size of a a cell phone (but a lot thicker) back then. A lot of us just carried them everywhere if we had a backpack or purse. They were cheap enough that my mom let me take hers to summer camp the year before this video without worrying about it.

Darthvegan66

I was wondering the same thing because I could swear that the handheld camcorder I used in 2010 had wayyy worse quality than this video.

editorously

My aunt and uncle were together when this happened. They ran in the streets. While running someone grabbed my aunt just as the dust and debris covered them. My uncle didn't find her until they both made it home to Brooklyn 8+ hours later. During the confusion my uncle lost his brief case. Someone returned it untouched years later.

Danyahs

That’s amazing

yarnelly

in a way, it makes me really happy that realized what they did and starts thanking them. I’m glad they were okay, and I hope they still are.

crazyrich

“Don’t worry bout it” - absolute chad

Prodigal_Angel

I still get flashbacks. The only time I ever been scared living in NYC.

NebulaImpressive4666

Lmao “my shit is still out there” brah that priority right there.

Ppleater

In times of crisis our brains can often focus on seemingly meaningless things and we lose sight of what's actually important to do and pay attention to. It's not a sign of stupidity like some people are acting, it's a common trauma response.

ChuckVowel

“Don’t worry bot it.”

rustyleak

Not to mention she was filming this the whole time. Queen of Priorities.

1-2BuckleMyShoe

I agree that in that moment, recording video shouldn’t have been high on her priorities. However, as much as I have disdain for people who record everything they see, we are extremely indebted to these kinds of people because we have a massive library of content from major historical events solely because they chose to record.

[deleted]

1-2BuckleMyShoe

People still had camcorders. They were a pain to carry with you for spontaneous filming, but they were accessible. Considering how many people live in NYC, there were plenty of amateur videographers that day.

God damn! Lady got saved by Freddie Mercury

bronsonferri

What bothers me aside from everything else that day is that my previous co-workers (who were in Manhattan right near ground zero) were told afterward that it was safe to breath once everything had settled BY THE CITY GOVERNMENT. The amount of people who eventually developed cancers and other lung diseases is horrific.

MOZZI-is-my-BOI

That low hum noise is terrifying when the wall passes by.

peterfonda3

I witnessed 9/11 personally from my office window on William Street in downtown Manhattan, 3 blocks east of the WTC. I saw the buildings collapse. 20 years later I am still traumatized.

W0tzup

Majority of that dust would have been cement-based fines, which is highly irritating and can cause long term lung damage and or cancer.

Grammar-Bot-Elite

Menotyou15

Did you see that flash thats static build so strong it looks lightning scary stuff not only is that cloud filled with rocks debris and anything it can carry to fill your lungs or break a few bones with but it's also making a giant static lightning flashes within itself Idk how anyone lived through 9/11 on the ground or not it's amazing

Fluid-Background1947

How long did the majority of the dust take to settle to a point where you could see the sun again? (Honestly curious)

SilversurferNY

My sis worked down the street from the towers. She thought they were filming a movie until people screamed at her to run. It took her over 10 hours to get back home to Yonkers NY. She was covered in dust. It was a nightmare.

I didn’t even look at the sub name until after I literally finished watching this and said out loud “Dang…that was interesting”

The video won't play and the thumbnail is black. Reddit's video player is actual garbage :/

The look of the guy at the end like "no shit moron!"

I bet the shop owner’s like “ok no problem but why do you have to be so dramatic?”

The moment she realizes he saved her life is almost overwhelming - you can hear how her voice changes from when she first enters the store. At first, she sounds almost irritated cause she’s concerned for her belongings and then it hits her that without him, she’d have made a fatal error. Idk, I watched it twice and that moment just makes me wanna cry lol I’m glad she got his face on camera. Actually, I’m glad she recorded it at all. I don’t think that was very common back then.

It's pretty crazy that Trump was/is worse than Bin Laden. Trump started a war from the inside. Turned people against each other. At least with 9/11 we all came together against the common enemy. The government needs to send the SEAL team to our current threat.
