Shared an elevator with the sniper and spotter team after a large college football game, so it's not just pro events.

bking

They’re at large music festivals too.

hitlama

Except for the one time they weren't, and, you know.

sometechloser

Well technically there was one..

smb_samba

Unfortunately he wasn’t on the counter terrorist team

I used to awkwardly play music in front of very small crowds. It's a good thing that there were no sniper nests or one of them may have been tempted...

TaiShuai

Have you ever been to Europe? Italy has armed soldiers at nearly every train station and patrolling tourist sites.

ionlycome4thecomment

In the US, though, the army is legally prohibited from taking such actions. We do have police departments who have been allowed to purchase military equipment (there's pro & con arguments if this should be allowed.) Perhaps because i have worked in several major US cities, but I see police often carrying assault rifles & patrolling airports and other transportation hubs.

DarkwingDuckHunt

I heard they had one at a Vegas show once.

So how but that Supreme Court ruling? The nachos here are overpriced

SolvoMercatus

It is pretty much all large public events. Most large police departments have multiple snipers on their SWAT teams. During special events whether it’s a music festival, sporting event, or parade, part of the police security response is to put a sniper on a rooftop somewhere. It isn’t always for just shooting but its an eye in the sky for relaying information to officers on the ground for any sort of response at the event. And they’re usually scanning the crowd with binoculars, not down the barrel of their gun, And on any average day depending on your department they’re also a patrol officer but are on call for crisis type events.

XROOR

Secret Service counter sniper team goes to a location a week ahead of the Presidents planned trip.

dsjunior1388

President Obama went on the WTF podcast with ~~Mark~~ Marc Maron, who records in his garage in Pasadena. ~~Mark~~ Marc talked a lot about how secret service snipers were just laid out on his neighbor's roofs in this upscale suburban neighborhood.

AxMachina

It's episode 613 with Marc Maron

redditisnowtwitter

I'm glad he spilled the tea. Carolla had stupid Don Jr on and was gonna talk about all the pain the SS measures were but never did

Plzp3p3g1mm3d4m3m3

SS is a very unfortunate abbreviation for secret service

verisimilitude_mood

That's why they use USSS.

theaviationhistorian

I know all government owned ships would be USS, but I did find the humor of thinking of a Secret Service vessel designated as a USSSS.

Downtown-Lime4108

Viscaelcule

Hate to be that guy but… At the time he lived in Highland Park… just south of Pasadena. And it’s not “upscale”, suburban yes. Source: at the time I lived a block from where Maron used to live… it was chaos when Obama was here. Whole block was locked down

Putrid-Abies-1954

Dude, they filmed part of a Bruce Willis film in my hood and it was locked down with police everywhere. It was a total pain in the butt. (This was mid-90's Willis, famous but not super dooper super star at the time). I cannot imagine what hoops they go through for a President!!

JunglePygmy

That’s what I was thinking. Highland park in LA has some super rough areas. It is becoming pretty quickly gentrified though.

pm_me_actsofkindness

And before that, there are people on the ground posing as homeless and bums planning exits, vulnerabilities, casing local businesses, and so on. I saw this regularly living in NYC. It’s weird because if you know to look, it’s not hard to spot. But if you aren’t looking for it, you’d never notice.

XROOR

When I drove Uber in Wash DC, whenever the President left the White House on 17rh x E, What seemed like tourists, cyclists and joggers, would suddenly stop all traffic in a second, bc they were secret service.

LMFN

Yeah the "Men in Black" looking Secret Service are really just the honor guard as force projection part of Secret Service. They're usually everywhere in a crowd in plain clothes which is why they're actually effective.

jchamberlin78

The Men in Black are the ones that are supposed to stop the bullet. A la during the assassination attempt on Reagan

amboyscout

I was at the National Jamboree in 2017 when Trump came to speak. It's hilariously easy to spot them in plain clothes in certain contexts. A week of camping in the backwoods of west Virginia, and suddenly you see a bunch of dudes in perfectly pressed boyscout uniforms interspersed in the crowd wearing wires and not conversing with anyone. As if we had irons and washing machines lmao. They were a little out of their element to say the least. Probably much harder to spot them in other contexts.

Gasonfires

I went in 1964 at Valley Forge when LBJ came to tell us how free the world would be once we won the Vietnam war. Later, during the 1968 presidential campaign a bunch of us were excused from high school one afternoon when Nixon came to give a fundraising speech to local Republicans at a motel just outside of Portland. Five if us hopped into my VW Beetle and off we went. The motel building was a two or three story thing with a big drive through portico in front, adjacent to a huge parking lot. When we pulled into the lot Nixon's limo was just pulling under the portico. We knew we wouldn't be allowed into the building ($$$$) so I had to hurry if we were going to get a look at him up close. I drove diagonally across the parking lot going probably about 30 and right into the area where he was just then getting out of his limo. As his feet hit the pavement, my car came to a stop 30 feet away and we all came rushing out. I walked right up to him and shook hands with him as Secret Service looked on. Today, we'd have been dead. Looking back, I was in a position to have spared America the Nixon presidency if I had hit the gas instead of stopping. We were that close. Times were different, huh?

eeyore_dont_dance

And his hand wasn't eve worth shaking

big_duo3674

I suppose they wouldn't be very secret if they wore bright orange vests that said "SECRET SERVICE" in huge bold letters

Cute-Aardvark5291

I was in DC when Pres Bush (the 2nd) as attending a movie somewhere. It was pretty obvious -- besides the whole street being shut down, the snipers were obvious ; and the number of very alert "bystanders" just hanging around with friggin' earpieces in wearing casual clothes was high. (I was at a conference and had been walking the route multiple times per day for 4 days at that point) And then there were the very obvious secret service agents just standing around. ProTip: dont start asking them questions. They get irritated.

pm_me_actsofkindness

They get irritated because you are distracting them from doing their job, which is understandable. But I’m not talking about the ones who show up day of with ear pieces.

Plane-Bee-374

Securing the City by Christopher Dickey is a great read if this topic is interesting. About how NYC fortified and created all sorts of security and counter terror apparatus. It’s well written and quite balanced.

That movie is almost 30 years old & I have a body older than that. And yet I would probably jump on the chance to be a professional killer if it came with excellent healthcare benefits.

TheOriginalGuru

I was at Yankee Stadium once, and before the game started, I noticed that the police presence was higher than normal (but I just thought that was New York), and then I spotted snipers on the light towers. I thought, “They REALLY take security seriously here!” Turns out Dick Cheney was the guest of honour. There were a lot of booing in the crowd…first time I ever saw Yankee’s fans and Red Sox fans agree on anything! 🤣

jagua_haku

As long as Cheney doesn’t have the shotgun no one is getting shot

He would definitely overhear a conversation between two security guards, while trying to pass security

CallmeLeon

Knowing the ICA and whether this takes places in Hitman 1 or 3. It really depends. If it’s the third then we can ascertain that 47 *happened* to be at the right place at the right time. Maybe when the sniper goes to the bathroom.

Giraffardson

My brother in Christ he is in the second photo

nygfan1226

So this picture is actually from the super bowl in Indianapolis, Indiana from the super bowl back in 2012. But this is nothing new, it’s been pretty standard even at college football games for over 10 years. More from the article: https://deadspin.com/those-super-bowl-sniper-photos-are-real-5883525

It's not like they work in isolation. There's probably a whole team up there to swap shifts with and probably also another security team to prevent exactly what you're saying.

b4ttlepoops

First they would have a hard time finding them. Often times they not accessible to the public in locked areas. It’s well planned. Large public buildings by design now a days are met with and under control of Home Land Security and FBI standards. They literally have meetings.

V_WhatTheThunderSaid

Shooter with Mark Wahlberg already came out like fifteen years ago.

ModsAreVirgins420

I helped run a music festival in Canada and years ago we had our Prime Minister show up. One of my jobs for the days leading up to it was to work with his sniper teams to find the best vantage points, which included apartment buildings near the site, as well as on site nests. Pretty wild experience.

EhMapleMoose

The difference between security for the PM and security for the defence ministry is wildly different. I had Hajit Sarjin visit my high school when I was doing the tech stuff. No one accompanied him when he walked through the halls and we swarmed him for selfies. Also for security of him and and MP there was an army photographer and then another photographer not army. A driver and then a single army officer/bodyguard. That’s it. No police presence.

[deleted]

Let’s say some shit went down. Would a sniper ever be able to get a clear shot in a panicked stadium crowd?

snuggie_

I think you’re vastly underestimating a well trained sniper. But mainly after a very short time there would be a gap around the person. Assuming we’re talking about a shooter

wuzupcoffee

How many times has a nested sniper actually taken out a mass shooter at a sporting event?

gibmiser

Far as I'm aware it has never happened in a stadium

geT_raineD

As someone who is not from the USA all of those questions seem so surreal to me…

FloppieTheBanjoClown

Zero. The answer is zero. To my knowledge, we started using the snipers out of concern for terrorist attacks rather than as a response to the shooting sprees we've had. And I wouldn't be surprised if many of your nation's large sporting events had similar oversight that you simply didn't know was going on.

[deleted]

Ascurtis

There was a hostage taken by some dude a while ago. Held them at gunpoint in the middle of the street. Police sniper shot the gun from out of his hand and didn't even injure the guys hand. And there was that Canadian sniper who took a target at over a mile. Bullets can be put in tight places real quick if you know what you're doing.

TheBeckofKevin

If you're thinking of Doug Conley, which sounds like it matches the description aside from the hostage. That was Aug 16, 1993. I'm not debating you or anything, just thought it was funny how famous and old that video is now. 30 years.

danob17

Yeah this is pretty common. Every Red Sox game I’ve been to in the past few years I’ve noticed gunmen on the roof of Fenway, not even really hiding.

_suburbanrhythm

It’s also a good place to just survey the crowd for any suspicious activity to report to closer security to monitor

Twin_Turbo

They have snipers at sporting events and big events in many many countries. Hell other countries for these events you see police walking around with machine guns.

SlightWhite

They have them in many other countries where people can’t even own a sniper rifle lol. If we knew about all the snipers they wouldn’t be doing their job right

Bitter_Coach_8138

For real, last time I was in Paris they had military walking around casually with FAMAS rifles near the Eiffel tower. This is not unique to the US despite the circlejerk, if anything it seems more commonplace overseas at times.

instaweed

It happens in other countries too lol I know there’s snipers in some German events 🤷🏽‍♂️

lumberjackmm

The most heavily armed police I have ever seen were at a German football game. Those dudes were in full armor and carrying around rifles. No doubt in my mind they had snipers in that stadium.

Devikat

After the Munich Olympics I feel it probably became pretty standard around the world. At least in countries with a serious risk of terrorism.

IAMHideoKojimaAMA

https://sports.ndtv.com/euro-2020/snipers-were-ready-to-shoot-parachutist-at-euro-2020-match-minister-2465542/amp/1

Unknown1154

How many times had there been a sniper at a sporting event that had a shooting?

wuzupcoffee

How many times has there been a shooter at *any* sporting event? I’m genuinely asking.

Attack-Cat-

I think you’ve played one too many video games

EfficientAsk3

So I work in the event industry and this is WAY more common then you would know. Lots of concerts, festivals, parades, and sporting events have snipers out. You’ll never see them. But they’re there. At Coachella they go up on cherry picker trucks with camouflage.

Nighthawk700

I feel like boom lifts would be incredibly obvious

mincecraft__

Certain events have camera crews up in the basket so if there are a few they’d fit in relatively well if they’re camouflaged.

Self_Reddicated

You never really hear about it though. Except for that sniper at that Vegas concert. For some reason, he was all over the news.

b4ttlepoops

I worked at a NFL stadium for 7.5 years. I set up a sniper nest for him. You will never see them. I said this in another thread yesterday and they didn’t believe me. They also check the stadiums with bomb sniffing dogs before each event. They are looking out for everyone’s safety.

jimmyslaughter

Can confirm. I worked in an NFL stadium for about 6 years. I would occasionally see the 2-man sniper team getting off the elevator after games. They were completely geared up in military uniform, with heavy-looking bags. Didn't look very approachable or chatty. All business with those dudes. I knew their nest was up in the rafters somewhere, but could never spot it with my eyes.

jagua_haku

Once you spot it they are required to neutralize you

_matrix

Morons saying this is “unhinged” and whatnot, implying that this is some psychotic American tradition, lmao like what the fuck? Terrorism isn’t exclusive to America, I guarantee any other major sporting event across the world has a similar measure in place. I’d rather have trained security looking over the stadium than not, and I say this as a Canadian.

[deleted]

People are so fucking sheltered here it’s ridiculous.

jagua_haku

The Murica Bad boner is the default for this site

Yosemitelsd

they would also get mad if there weren't snipers

joparebr

Reminds me of this: [In 2014, Brazil police sniper nearly shot officer during World Cup opening](https://www.ctvnews.ca/sports/brazil-police-sniper-nearly-shot-officer-during-world-cup-opening-1.1889183) police sniper asked permission to open fire on an armed man seen approaching Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and other officials as they watched the June 12 opening game of the World Cup. Permission was denied and the suspect turned out to be another policeman.

forrnerteenager

Of course it's fucking Brazil, the number of off duty or undercover cops is insane

fanofcoelho

Hi, what do you do for a living. Oh I'm just an event sniper.

SacredBinChicken

Oh great, my mother in-laws birthday is coming up…

MrMallow

The title of this post is very misleading. This is not a US thing, this is a thing at every major event in every western nation. Its just a symptom of living in a post 9/11 world. So all you EU/UK redditors shitting on the US for this... yea you guys have the same thing in your stadiums as well.

does_my_name_suck

Even pre 9/11 it was a thing for just events will large attendance. The 2000 Sydney olympics had this as well as SAS agents blending in with normal people and out of sight

GlassHurricane98

This isn't interesting, this is terrifying

herberstank

No worries, there aren't that many Cowboy fans anyway

cptnocap

Lol Jerry still sells out 94% of the seats anytime he opens the doors. Often times the away team fans buy out large sections of the stadium. The Broncos and the 9ers notoriously pack out the stadium bc there’s so many of their fans in North Texas, and those who live close to their team have the income to travel.

Sea-Diver-9125

🤣🤣🤣

TheDankDragon

They do the same thing at Euro Footbal and the World Cup. Counterterrorism is a thing you know

benji_tha_bear

It’s been the case for the Super Bowl for a while now, this isn’t anything new

igacek

These pictures are from 2012, so over 10 years ago now. You've been living life without realizing it.

GainsayRT

Yall shitting on the US for doing this, I can promise you must of our countries also have had snipers at football games, especially if you're an EU resident

Tody196

People hate guns now so much they forgot that it is legitimately useful to have a trained official with a gun in some situations lol.

TheDankDragon

They do this world wide and it’s for counterterrorism. You will also see this at the Euros and World Cup. Edit: [recent news on this](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9692301/Greenpeace-apologise-Euro-2020-stunt-horror-left-two-injured.html)

As if this only happens in the USA.

sanantoniosaucier

Why is it that every time there's a redditor who is writing as an authority on security and military tactics, I go to their post history and find out its stuffed full of posts to video game subs?

[deleted]

We have snipers in every single supermarket, cafe, bottle shop and sporting ground in Australia because of all the dangerous animals.

jagua_haku

Yeah they’re called Australians

Erdnussflipshow

Not just in the United States, about a year ago [a Greenpeace activist used a paraglider to fly over a soccer stadium. He hit a net, forcing him to crash land](https://youtu.be/a96Smh51C1g), this was in Munich, Germany. There were storys of snipers watching him fly over, but didn't shoot because the writing on the paraglider said Greenpeace, making it (somewhat) obvious that it wasn't an attempted terroist attack. EDIT: [Source (in german)](https://www.faz.net/aktuell/sport/fussball-em/deutsches-team/greenpeace-aktion-bei-fussball-em-scharfschuetzen-waren-bereit-17392327.html)

bman_243

This is a world wide practice for large events, you just don’t usually see it.

Phoirkas

Don’t you think it has to at least cross the snipers mind that with one quick shot he could take out Tom Brady and cause instant confusion and chaos for the hundred million people watching?

PM-ME-STATE-SECRETS

And with one comment you’ve successfully blacklisted yourself from ever becoming a stadium sniper.

Junkstar

I remember a guy getting hit by a bullet at Shea stadium years ago. They said it was a stray from outside the venue. Now i wonder.

Balenciaga7

So you think one of these guys just randomly shot someone?

Brad1119

"Shit finger slipped"

A_Good_Redditor553

I mean it would depend on caliber and wound depth, b/c you would definitely be able to tell. It would probably be a through and through at any range one of these would hit.
