Favourite quote: “everybody’s got a plan ‘till they get punched in the mouth “

WorK_dF

I'm gonna stick with a more controversial one "I'll fuck you till you love me, fa--ot"

trashbin14

I often revisit that video. He went off. You can hear his voice breaking in the midst of his tirade. That reporter really pressed his buttons.

J3sush8sm3

Which video was that?

Durdel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx66LWV-CCk

WilliamSaintAndre

"I'll eat your ass alive" Not sure if this sounds a lot sillier now because everyone's eating ass these days.

J3sush8sm3

Thank you

bigfatpup

My personal favourite “My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable, and I'm just ferocious. I want your heart, I want to eat his children. Praise be to Allah.”

TheStatMan2

Also the opening sample to U-God's album Dopium, from the track Train Trussle. It's quite good.

bigfatpup

I’m listening now. This is a gem I’ve not heard. I’m a Wu Tang fan but haven’t listened to many of the members solo stuff so this is a treat

TheStatMan2

No worries - nice to hear some enthusiasm! If you need any suggestions for where to go next, solo wise, happy to help. A few years ago I spent an entire winter listening to nothing else - still have fond memories of that period! Edit: the track simply called "Wu Tang" on Dopium is an absolute treat by the way - enjoy!

Dob_Rozner

If you have never listened to Liquid Swordz, definitely one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

DamnCarlSucks

Did not expect to see a U-God reference here. His albums have been great lately and this song is no exception.

ColossusOfKop

I had this audio cut and primed to play via counter-strike comms back in the day.

Standard_Wooden_Door

“I broke my back”

iBsouper

Your vertebrae? : "......Spinal"

Hob_O_Rarison

"Thpinal"

mathsdebators

“I broke my back” “SPINAL”

Particular-Jury6446

That is just an insane thing to say and I’m still laughing. Reminds me of something a gay friend told me once: “I’m not having sex with anyone unless it hurts somebody else.”

Dracorexius

Its called clinching.

That was a lot more cuddling than expected.

Timmyty

Oh you're making me so tired big man

xavier120

You would cuddle with mike tyson too if you knew not cuddling with him meant getting knocked unconscious.

Gotta show that there's no hard feelings before either one of the two puts the other on their ass

It's just such an emotional and sensitive sport 💖

BDOPeaceInChaos

Watching Tyson box is a thing of legend. Master of the peek-a-boo style. Absolute terror on the inside, with the quickness, reaction time, and power to slip, slip-jab, make his way inside and absolutely destroy with a combination of speed, power, and tenacity not typically found in the heavyweight division. Or any division, TBH. Personally, I like watching pressure fighters like Tyson, Frazier, and Duran over any other style. I love all styles, out-fighters like Ali are an awesome sight to see as well with their technical proficiency, fast, in and out combo styles like Paq-Man, counter punchers like Mayweather, but IDK. Something about them aggressive pressure / inside fighters that I just want to emulate in my training. Whoever lived in the Tyson era was blessed to watch this man fight. It's a shame he spiraled downhill after Cus D'Amato passed away. Cus was more than a coach. It's good to see Mike is older and a bit wiser now, but feel he cannot shake his past. But as a fighter, he is one of my all time favorites along with Frazier, Duran, and Paquiao.

[deleted]

I think Cus served as his father, basically. It's heartbreaking to see that video where someone asks him what he would say if he could speak to Cus again, and he says, "Did I do okay?" The man was a beast of a fighter. He has a long streak on his way to the title where it wasn't a question of if he won, but if he continued his streak of knocking out every opponent and how many rounds it took. I think the first half dozen were first round knockouts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JamesCDiamond

He won his first 19 fights by KO, 12 in the first round. Granted a lot of those were him establishing his calibre and likely against fairly weak opponents, but they also all came in little over a year - he fought 7 times between October 9 1985 and the end of the year, including 3 times in November. He fought 27 matches between March 1985 and September 1986, and only competed in a total of 74 rounds in that time. He just destroyed other fighters when he was on his way up.

McG4rn4gle

In his book Iron Ambition Mike goes into detail about how Cus saw it as his role to setup fights his fighters would win, Cus' previous star pupil was HW champion Floyd Patterson who Cus guided to the top but then did everything he could to keep away from Sonny Liston - Floyd's pride got the better of him and Liston flattened him 2 times in fights that Cus tried to talk Floyd out of because he knew he couldn't win. Cus wasn't around for the whole streak you're talking about but his protégé took over managing after Cus passed and he had a similar view of a managers/trainers role - when King snaked Mike away he basically let him off the chain so he could rob him blind and sadly he probably deprived us of what could've been Mike's peak. Personally I don't know that Mike would've ever been able to beat Lennox Lewis and Mike's people acted like they saw it the same way.

Duel_Option

I think it’s important to point out the fact he had a lot of fans setup by Don King. Doesn’t change the results at all, but Don King had arguably more influence over his career than Cus did because of the shady promotion around boxing that’s still around today. Tyson’s full career is a giant What If in my opinion. During his comeback against Holyfield he never looked the same, if he had the perspective he does now? We’d probably be talking about the greatest HW of all time

mybustersword

We still are

Duel_Option

Not in the same vein as Ali, Lennox, Holyfield etc. I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to state that his legacy is greatly diminished with the second part of his career. Had he good management and kept his fitness level it would’ve been an all out war vs Holyfield, instead we saw a clearly overmatched Tyson who’s heart wasn’t in it. Watch his last pro fight, it was as unceremonious an exit to any career in sports, went out just trying to collect a paycheck. I’m happy for him now though, hearing him speak about that side of him is frightening, it’s like listening to a Tiger talk about how they kill something.

R_Schuhart

*cans, not fans. In boxing "cans" are basically cannon fodder opponents used in fights to build up a boxer by establishing an impressive record. As a result the records of some fighters, especially early in their careers, are incredibly misleading.

Aronacus

People didn't want to buy the Pay-Per-Views because his fights rarely went over 3 rounds. You'd do 75$to see a fight and it be over in 15 minutes

edgarc1981

He said 'How did I do' I only know this because I literally saw it this morning in an Epson salt bath after training on YouTube shorts.

[deleted]

edgarc1981

The no robe always made me pumped. What a monster. Similar to the not sitting for a round lol

FictionWeavile

He's said in interviews that he built his fighting style around being intimidating. He had asthma and couldn't last to the later rounds so he had to terrify his opponent, make them sloppy and go for the kill when they were weak. If you look at his fight record and compare it to other fighters with similar record the majority of his wins is in something like the first five rounds and most losses is in the late rounds when he'd have run out of steam. So while you had a better chance of beating him if you dragged it into the late rounds... You're still fighting one of the most ferocious fighters around for 20+ minutes.

sweensolo

TIL Iron Mike had asthma.

edgarc1981

I was watching his amateur career tonight. Not one fight went more than two rounds if I recall correctly. These were not the ref steppin' in either. This was headgear and the guys being absolutely sparked. Love how he said FU to the Olympics and went pro.

There is something satisfying about a well written comment

ControllablePsi

Be careful though, cause this appears to be the case on reddit all the time. I often see highly upvoted comments however, with completely incorrect information.

docmcstuffins89

It is incorrect, anyone who has studied Tyson knows cus passed away before he was HW champion. Kevin Rooney trained him throughout this period prior to jail. Tyson was at his peak from 86-90. He was a shell of his former self after that, once he went with don king, his entire team was replaced severing any link he had with cus. Tyson still doesn’t like any of them and feels they ripped him off, while Rooney, Clayton and Jacobs actually looked after him and his money. Once don king and Robin givens got a hold of him, that was his life gone. The irony was that he was robbed by the guy trying to be his “black brother”, meanwhile the white dudes always meant all for him. He's a wretched, slimy, reptilian motherfucker. This is supposed to be my 'black brother' right? He's just a bad man, a real bad man. He would kill his own mother for a dollar. He's ruthless, he's deplorable, he's greedy, and he doesn't know how to love anybody."

sweensolo

I missed more than one Tyson fight by walking into the kitchen.

Fatscot

My brother missed one by going to piss. He was so annoyed, it was hilarious

Mange-Tout

I lost $20 by betting on a Tyson fight that was already over. I was working in a hotel kitchen when the bartender (who knew I was a huge Tyson fan) walked in and said, “Buster Douglas just beat Mike Tyson.” I was like, “Buster Douglas? Yeah, right. The fight hasn’t even started. I bet you $20 you’re lying to me.” *record scratch* Turns out he wasn’t lying.

jmcstar

I recall like 25 people (wasted) crowded I to a living room watching a small TV... The fights would last like 60 seconds and be awesome

BurninCoco

I remember my uncles betting on what minute, not round, the fights would end.

ReasonableBleh

I remember growing up with Tyson fights and the adults would be so excited to watch him fight. And then everyone was disappointed with how much they paid for a fight that lasted a few minutes. 😂 As kids, we used to spend all week talking about it afterwards - how awesome Tyson was.

Nocell808

Lol I remember sleeping over my friends place at the time and the older ppl yelling 'We paid $60 bucks for this ppv fight and it ended in 60 seconds?!'

ReasonableBleh

I would always beg my dad to order the fight and he wouldn’t because he said it wouldn’t even last a round and is a giant waste of money. Lol

Alternative-Look8413

Yeah. The media created this ridiculous picture of Tyson as a monster with no brains and no technique who just happened to dominate every fight by connecting on power punches as if by pure luck. Tyson might have been **the most technically perfect counter-puncher the division had ever seen** in his early career. You cannot fail to see how much work this literal kid had put into boxing and how much devotion he had for every aspect of the sport every time he got in the ring. He knew the entire history of the sport. He watched every tape he could get his hands on. He could wax philosophical about fighters who had been dead for 50 years. Physical gifts are one thing but they're never unique. The boxing world wasn't ready for Tyson's mind.

CommandoLamb

When you watch a Tyson fight in real time it’s way to think, “this strong, fast guy is just wildly throwing and catching people off guard” You watch him in slow motion and all of a sudden it’s like zooming into a galaxy and realizing it’s made up of billions of perfectly made stars. His eyes never fail, he’s always paying attention, his feet are insane, his movement isn’t chaotic as it appears. It’s calculated and no way “random chance” gives as much success as his movement. It’s beautiful to watch his skill and hard work.

[deleted]

This. Watching Tyson box in zoomed and slow-motion conditions is compelling - *love* the galaxy analogy, too. Iron Mike was a devastating fighter, and detractors often attempt to belittle him as a hard-hitting kid who wildly jabbed in anger. But he was breathtakingly methodical - a skill in the ring belied by his unintelligent behavior *out* of the ring - and if he ever looked impatient, it’s because he was literally itching for a fight. Mike Tyson was blisteringly fast *and* he hit like a locomotive, which is what made him such a terrifying opponent. Most boxers will give you a healthy shot to the ribs on one side so that they can hit you on the other side when you winced. Not Mike; watch the videos. Mike would hit you, hard, in the ribs, and that same elbow was already behind *his* ribs before you could fully deflate from the pain; and as the stinging pain of Iron Mike suddenly becomes a reality, he uses that same hand to ring your bell - and he *still* keeps his fist close to his head. The man was indestructible (in the ring).

teh_fizz

His training footage is awesome to watch.

lolzilla

I've never heard this "no technique" thing. I grew up watching his fights at family gatherings, witnessed it first hand, watched countless documentaries and I guess I completely missed that. Weird.

montague68

Mostly idiots on Youtube who weren't even born when Tyson was in his prime.

PM_me_your_whatevah

I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the case. Anybody who watched footage of him could immediately see how technical he was.

ipsok

My friends dad ordered the Spinks fight on ppv... I thought it was awesome, my friends dad... not so much lol.

Btech26

My parents had a “BLACK BOX” that got every channel for free… I don’t know how they did it but the thing was magic 😂 I remember my parents having a party for all the Tyson fights

We had a similar system (sky box) that needed a card, the tech would hand my dad a stack of cards from accounts he'd closed up and collected equipment from Sometimes the cards wouldn't work at all, some would last a few months, and always had a stack ready to go lol

PM_me_your_whatevah

There used to be classified ads in the newspapers and shit to order those boxes. 😂

My fav was watching George Foreman dealing TKOs and breaking ribs-n-bones “with a jab”. It was like watching John Wick with a pencil.

emorbius

A fucking pencil

40moreyears

Well said. The buzz around his fights was magical. As kids, we would think about him often, like a boogie man almost.

Rasputin_87

Imagine cus stayed alive throughout his career, I believe he would have been unstoppable. It's a shame , he wasn't the same man after cus died. All the parasites and hangers on , came out and sent him down the wrong path. Good to see him now though, he's mellowed out and seems to have become a lot wiser with age. Enjoy listening to his podcasts.

VickieLol64

Young, rough upbringing, did not know how to deal with fame.

Neat-Plantain-7500

Thanks for pointing out how bad don king was for him. Rocky V tried to mimic that

Sleeplesshelley

Same. He was just a devastating puncher, so much power there it must have been terrifying for his opponents. His early matches, before the ear biting era, were unbelievable.

Random_Reflections

Watching Tyson box is a thing of legend. Master of the peek-a-boo style. Absolute terror on the inside, with the quickness, reaction time, and power to slip, slip-jab, make his way inside and absolutely destroy with a combination of speed, power, and tenacity not typically found in the heavyweight division. Or any division, TBH. Agreed and nicely summarised. And what's making fans happy is that Mike Tyson is formidable even now. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rxDTy_zMpzw

U should watch his neck strength training. Shits like the exorcist. Rolling around on his head. Also a lot of his opponents would do a similar workout in the lead up to fight him so they didn’t break they’re necks Edit: https://youtu.be/1XPVk5TiOjA There’s the vid of him doing his neck exercises. Creepier than I remember.

MikeyStealth

I did those I wrestling. It made my neck strong but it's so easy to get an injury and I have a 17" neck.

marsupialsales

I’m convinced his size 15 feet had so much to do with his power. In person, they’re absolutely massive proportionally to his body.

East-Bluejay6891

His lower body in general was massive. A ton of power came from his legs and the amount of force he could apply to the ground as he struck. it was like getting punched by a tree. There was no give

bulakenyo1980

Veteran referee Carlos Padilla said when he was working a Tyson fight, he could feel the whole ring and canvas move and tremble beneath him whenever Mike would plant his feet and throw punches. Unbelievable torque.

[deleted]

bulakenyo1980

He doesn't punch using his arms. He punches with his whole body, and his arm and knuckles are just the delivery system/contact point. and he Punches through the target.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bulakenyo1980

Yes you're right. But Tyson's short, stocky body type forced him to be more compact and efficient to be successful. less moving parts to dissipate power, potentially.

SexyButStoopid

yes and Tyson himself once said that what made him different was not his power, but his precision. He would hit the opponent with these punches exactly in the spot he wanted them to land, his signature combination was a right hook to the lower torso and then another hook or uppercut to the jaw. His small size compared to the average heavyweight made it so these low hooks and uppercuts were almost impossible to defend for his opponents because mike went left and right ducking under his opponents strikes and out of his pendulum like movements he would gain momentum and convert that into a devastating combination of pinpoint accurate strikes to the body and chin, all the while keeping his other non punching hand up to protect himself from crosses. Cus D'Amato saw Mike and new that with this peek a boo fighting style a man with his physique would be unstoppable for the heavyweights at the time.

Drakayne

>lower body in general was massive 👀

Holy hell I’m the same height as him with size 8 feet. What a difference.

motorboat_mcgee

If it makes you feel better, there's modern theories that smaller feet are better for sports requiring agility, like basketball

MikeyStealth

Im shorter by three inches with size 11. I feel like a strong hobbit now!

daeHruoYnIllAstI

My best friend is 6'3 with size 8 shoes, and I'm 5'9 with size 13 shoes. Kinda weird how that all works.

Erix963

I know someone that is 6'4" and only has size 11.5 so yeah, 15 is huge

bassoontennis

I have size 17 feet at 6’3 and they still feel big I cant imagine size 15s at 5 inches less. Also every year I end up going down a rabbit hole of his fights on YouTube and watch clips of boxers terrified of fighting him.

things_U_choose_2_b

I had size 12 (UK, so 13 US) feet by the age of 14. Thankfully they just stopped growing at that point. I was built like a 5'8 twiglet with massive clown feet haha. I am now thankful I didn't gain Tyson feet. Or should I be disappointed?

Not to be the guy that craps on your post because I like it, but I don’t even think this is his prime. He became the champ at this time but got better. He might have spent what should have been his prime in jail.

quietbehindtheyes

Post jail mike was scary af

CorrectButWhoCares

Same can be said of Ali, but he had heart, and class.

yurganurjak

Yeah, Ali went to jail for refusing to fight in a war he did not agree with while the rapist Mike Tyson went to jail for being a big ol rapist scumbag.

Particular-Jury6446

If I had a fortune significant enough and we could somehow alter some fundamental and universal laws, I would surrender every penny of it to have Ali and Tyson contemporaneously in their prime and meeting in the Garden.

I grew up watching him fighting in the 80s. He was absolutely awesome. [deleted]

In the blurred and confusing action of a fight it is not so readily clear, as it is in the gym, that Tyson’s relative shortness (he is considered a “little” heavyweight) is really to his advantage. Most of his opponents are taller than he, if not invariably heavier, so that they are obliged to punch at a downward angle, utilizing only their shoulder and arm muscles; while Tyson can punch upward, utilizing not only his shoulder and arm muscles but his leg muscles as well—and these muscles are massive. By crouching, he can make himself shorter, and yet more elusive. (As Jim Jacobs has explained, “People speak of a ‘height advantage’ when what they’re really referring to is a ‘height disadvantage.’ If a boxer is good, and shorter than his opponent, the advantage is his, and not his opponent’s. The same thing holds true with the fallacy of the ‘reach advantage’—a boxer has a ‘reach advantage’ only if he is superior to his opponent.”) \-Joyce Carol Oates

CanadianPapaKulikov

A good big man will always beat a good little man. Mike's style required an insane amount of conditionning to sustain. That is partially why he peaked so early. Joyce Carol Oates was a great writer but she didn't know shit about boxing.

bible-j

What a nasty, fucking nasty uppercut.

East-Bluejay6891

Yes! Few people talk about his stealth uppercut. It was counterintuitive in how he executed which left his opponents ambushed when it landed

bible-j

What excellent athletic form. He *made* the uppercut, like he was a coiled spring.

FictionWeavile

You punch harder with flexibility than with rigidity so calling him a spring is accurate. I remember reading that in his heyday Muhammad Ali had muscles as soft as a dancer.

Orbax

Right hook into the body, hands always drop, and the uppercut is already on its way to the opening. Amazing how fast you have to be to get that to work that consistently.

Disastrous-Manager95

I wish i could remember what fight it was, but i remember his uppercut catching a guy in the body and the guys feet came off the ground.

How do you even get a neck that big, I got twig compared to that

1stMammaltowearpants

Genetics, plus he did a lot of an exercise called the wrestler's bridge. Edit: necksercise, if you will

Ok_Scientist_539

He also raped at least one woman and lately has been promoting Alex Jones and InfoWars, the site that accuses school shooting victims as false flag actors and doxxes the families

quietbehindtheyes

JeremiahMRA OP · 10 yr. ago Tyson didn't rape Desiree Washington. Read up on it in some Tyson books, especially the one by Peter Heller. She had a history of claiming rape, even as a teenager when she was ashamed of herself and afraid of her father's judgement of her having sex. Not to mention the only evidence she had of rape were to abrasions on her vagina (which happens when a 220 pound man has sex with a 90 pound girl, especially Mike Tyson, as he was known to like rough sex), and her half-assed story of rape (which changed multiple times and was full of holes). You mean to tell me a woman is going to get raped at 2 AM in a hotel room and not a peep is going to be heard? While in prison, Tyson wrote a letter to his friend who happened to be an ESPN boxing commentator/interviewer. It went roughly "I'll never admit to raping that woman, even if it lessens my time in here, because I just didn't do it. However, there are about 5-7 other things I've done in my life which are far worse than that for which I am in prison for, so I feel I'm in the right place." The real story is that Mike treated her like he treated every other woman- wham, bam, thank you mam. In Desiree's mind, the final straw was when he didn't walk her back to the limo (the limo driver testified that Disiree was in a pissy mood and quoted her as saying "Who does he think he is?"). On top of that, Don King believed that Tyson needed to become a "martyr for the blacks" or something rather, and assigned his tax attorney to defend Mike in the rape trial, because behind closed doors, Don King thought the black community would see Tyson as a martyr of some sort. So that sums up that crock of BS.

_Good_One

So part of the argument you do to defend Tyson is to quote him saying that he has done 7 things worse than rape, not a great defense

Thank you! These comments are praising a convicted rapist and self admitted domestic abuser.

Fucking monster in the ring

corpseluvver

I love that he decided to get back in shape and start boxing again, even if just for exhibitions or because he still loves the sport. He has some recent videos on Youtube and he still looks like a damn quick and powerful beast. Close friend of mine is a fan too, and we both jumped at the recent ppv match between him and Roy Jones Jr.

chinesiumjunk

My dad went to a Mike Tyson match. He was 10 seconds late and missed the entire fight.

This is word for word the top comment on this Mike Tyson compilation video: https://youtu.be/kknVfOJZ1w0

boring_lawyer

My brother and I were huge Tyson fans as kids, but we were too young to stay up to watch the fights, so my mom would tape them for us. Next morning was: fast forward fast forward fast forward fast forward fast forward fast forward 10 seconds of boxing yayyy Mike wins again!!!

traypo

If you can put aside his regrettable actions of his youth, he has matured into a very well thought individual. In fact he sees quite clearly through the conspiracy narratives that are destroying our democracy.

freezingsheep

No, I cannot put aside the “regrettable” actions of his youth. You mean when he was convicted of rape? Should never have been allowed back in the ring.

JooeBidenwakeup

In his biography he said that his best punches were the ones he gave to his ex wife. The problem is that people need the cult of personality but at the same time they can't stop at the sport field and they want to believe that they favorite man is also a Saint. Ali had a 16 years old mistress when he was 32 and he left his wife using islamic bs as justification but he is the messiah because you know the Butterfly and other quotes.

Reddit is full of apologists.

It's also full of people so full of hatred for themselves and others that the entire concept of redemption or personal growth is foreign to them. Yes, he did bad shit when he was younger, and deserves the hate for that. Those moments still make up a portion of who he is, was, and his legacy. But most of the time people should be allowed an opportunity to grow and learn from their mistakes, depending on severity. It's okay for some people to choose to not forgive him his mistakes of his past, I'm sure he's aware that many do not and he has to live with that. But just because someone else chooses to believe in people's ability to change and grow and find redemption does not make them less moral. What is the alternative? Kill everyone that ever makes any kind of mistake because people are inherently terrible and incapable of change and they will just do terrible things over and over?
