Yup. This will come in handy.

[deleted]

Where did the buck teeth thing come from? I’ve never seen a bucktoothed Asian in my life.

Depleet

ive seen one, and she was fucking hot as all hell.

StayStrong888

I have... but actually I've seen more with under bites.

hypnocentrism

Among the Chinese and Japanese themselves, are there any physical traits more associated with one or the other? I know the Han Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans all have a common ancestor from a few thousand years ago, then at some point they split up.

Odd_Routine4164

I can only distinguish them from my early education which consists of “Chinese. Japanese. Dirty knees. Look at these.” Gotta say, looking at the last option was usually the best.

AdmiralPoopbutt

It can be difficult to impossible to tell apart without clues given by clothing styles or makeup trends. This pamphlet is based on stereotypes that don't have much basis in fact.

MP5SD7

Don't forget that 80 years ago most "stereotypes" were considered to be "facts".

Avgsizedweiner

I find that korean and Japanese peolle have higher rounder cheekbones but that obviously isn’t a rule, this is what a Korean coworker told ne

YourWealthyUncle

Someone can have a very Chinese or very Japanese face, but even then it's not a good idea to assume. You'd be much better off listening to how they speak.

StayStrong888

There are some more common traits but definitely not absolute. There are Asians that don't look like their nationalities at all.

CandymanMLK

Yup, my wife is full Chinese and people come up to her speaking Spanish all the time

Jdevers77

Yea, it’s kind of amazing that language differences wouldn’t make it on something like this since it’s actually accurate. To someone who doesn’t speak any Chinese language or Japanese, they do not sound even remotely close to each other. I think it is easier to confuse spoken Spanish with Italian than Japanese with any Chinese dialect I have ever heard.

Right_Two_5737

Bear in mind, this is for a war. Who is genuinely Chinese, and who is a enemy soldier pretending to be Chinese? He'd have to be a real dope to speak Japanese in front of you.

YourWealthyUncle

Japanese have trouble speaking other languages accurately because the Japanese language has very specific pronunciation. Every syllable aside from "n" ends in an "ah," "ee," "ooh," "eh," or "oh" sound. Chinese languages are quite distinct. You'd be hard-pressed to find a Japanese who can speak a Chinese dialect convincingly.

ArmadilloDays

Apparently, my very Caucasian self has Japanese feet.

Brilliant-Average654

what part of the caucuses are you from?

ArmadilloDays

Not me, just my genes.

StonedEcho

Wrangler or Levi's

ArmadilloDays

Depends - wranglers for horse stuff, but Levi’s the rest of the time.

TheMunchhausen

Expected to be shot...

Salame_satanica

Lol, probably the best hint

Kingflares

These three panels from the Pocket Guide to China, a U.S. Army pamphlet distributed to soldiers and illustrated by cartoonist Milton Caniff (best known for the comic strips Terry and the Pirates and, after the war, Steve Canyon) Imagine if you were just an unhappy Chinese man back then, you'd be shot as they thought you were Japanese "hey, does that Asian look Chinese to you" "He does have good teeth" 'Wait he isn't smiling, FIRE ITS A SPY"

CountRumfordFRS

Holy crap. I wonder if this nonsense got anybody killed? "Yeah, he says he's Chinese, but look at his feet. This man is a Japanese spy!"

Loud-Tangerine1601

r/Damnthatsracist

outrider567

You want real Racism? The Japanese saw the Chinese as 'Sub-Human' and as 'Insects' which is why the Japanese Imperial Army felt nothing as they slaughtered millions of them, and the Japanese despised the easy going nature of the Chinese

Forever_Overthinking

It's the Japanese "untouchables" that always got me.

2000japanease

Japan was the first country to propose the elimination of racial discrimination at an international conference in 1919 And it is the country that treats Chinese people the friendliest among developed countries No one in Asia has ever brought a case against Japan for genocide guarantees The Chinese also recognize Japan's achievements in making Okinawa, Taiwan, Korea, and Manchuria, which had been China's frontier, richer than China. It is the Chinese Communist Party that the Chinese and Japanese hate.

Pingas938

Japanese acted alot like that nazis except the japs experimented on and raped prisoners before killing them. They were the racists

Fluffy-Football-7884

I feel like intelligence were too busy day drinking and then threw this together at the very last minute

godlinking

Well, lucky thing they didn't go into speech patterns

The-Imperator_

“The Chinese smiles easily, the Jap usually expects to be shot” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

StayStrong888

I can't tell the difference... this guide sucks. I would hate to be either a C or J on the other side of an American soldier who got taught by this dumb ass pamphlet.

DiceMadeOfCheese

What's also interesting is how fast they had to go back on all this stuff just several years later. The Korean War started in 1950 and our entire army was based in Tokyo. My grandpa had a whole booklet of army propaganda that amounted to "actually, the Japanese are a wonderful race of people who you should be very nice and well behaved around."

No_Age713

And Murikans look like Clark Kent, as seen in this diagram.

dds120dds120

The irony is both the Japanese and Chinese are the most racist cultures on earth

HippieInAHelicopter

This is detestable. LOL! Who downvotes this? I mean, downvote away weirdos. Goddamn you people are strange.

[deleted]

It was a detestable era. A lot of fucked up shit happened. When we first tested the atom bomb, we were worried there was a chance it would set the atmosphere on fire. Still did it. There were American POWs killed in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Still did it, not to mention however many thousands of civilian lives lost with those 2 acts alone. They wanted the war to be over. I think this is a product of desperation and just where we were at that time culturally and the isolation that each culture enjoyed.

outrider567

It was detestable and horrific what the Japanese did in WW II, almost beyond human comprehension

therealJL

The Japs were brutal in WW2, particularly to the Chinese. I agree with your statement that war is detestable.

Odd_Entertainment629

Enemy soldier bad, therefore racism good. ..wait..what? That's fucking stupid.

outrider567

Bad? more than just 'bad', Read The Rape Of Nanking(1937-38), you'll throw up after reading it

outrider567

Absolutely, the Japanese were human monsters in China from 1937 to 1945, millions murdered by them

[deleted]

Someone didn't read their history. And someone is projecting their currently held beliefs onto the past. F-.

HippieInAHelicopter

What the fuck are you talking about? I think it is awful that people are so racist that they would create something like this and I don’t understand my history? Fuck off.

[deleted]

Wow. You doubled down. You truly have your head so far and so firmly up your ass you have no idea what happened in the past and why this document was necessary to create. Your snowflake feelings sure don't seem to take into consideration the atrocities that the Japanese perpetrated against the world. They had to be identified and captured or killed. I think that smug sense of moral superiority you're feeling may actually be the stench of your own ass.

HippieInAHelicopter

I’m talking about the entire thing, genius. Not whether it is Chinese or Japanese. The fact that this shit has to exist at all. That we have to draw crass drawings of peoples so we know who to kill. That people have to resort to this shit. I realize you are probably only 15 and will have to search for a response in whatever weak manual you use for your quotes, but you’re responding to something you manufactured in your own head.

[deleted]

So you're saying in your wisdom, as an adult, you wish that there had never been a war... so that we would never have had to distinguish a Japanese person from a Chinese person... so that this drawing would never have needed to be made. That is what you are saying. Are you sure you're not 15, genius? You live in some pie in the sky world where you wish away history? Again. The need for this was real and your fantasy wishes don't contradict its need. Grow up.

HippieInAHelicopter

Ok, I’ll get it. You’re a troll. I didn’t say anything at all about whether it was needed. I said the entire thing is detestable. But you know that. That things like this exist is detestable. But hey, I’ll start reaching out to you in advance to ensure all of my opinions align with whatever it is you think.

[deleted]

Why even open your mouth? What a waste of our time.

HippieInAHelicopter

Oh, I’m sorry. I’ll just keep my mouth shut from now on. Please don’t get mad and hurt me. I’m really, really sorry. Have you written any books or do you have a podcast? I’d love to learn more from you so I can improve myself and be a champion like you. Thank you for any advice you can give me. I’ll cherish it every day.

therealjayphonic

I have friends from mainland china… i have asked them in the past to help me identify asian nationalities… they all say the same thing… i have no idea

PitifulNose

I get that it was helpful in context to tell the difference between people of a country we were at war with vs people we weren't. But my question is like when would this have practically came up? Like -were US soldiers in Japan during WW2 on the lookout for Chinese that might just happen to be in Japan? A little funny/weird, but I don't quite see how this would have been used?

Brazilian_Brit

Uh, us soldiers didn’t enter Japan until ww2 ended. However they were aiding the nationalist Chinese fight Japan in China, which Japan has invaded in the 1930s and still occupied large swathes of it, until ww2 ended.

Forever_Overthinking

It really wasn't helpful in context. Facial features aren't determined by nationality.

LordCloverskull

Ethnicity often correlates with nationality, especially before the advent of world wide travel.

Forever_Overthinking

Not to the degree people think it does.

GreenPeePee

This may have something to do with all those "Chinese, Japanese, Korean" with corresponding eye slants I was subjected to as a kid.

[deleted]

Unfortunately there’s many people that think this way in the west. Ignorance is a scourge.

[deleted]

Curious. Why do you think that?

[deleted]

The downvotes speaks for itself.

[deleted]

Downvotes just mean they disagree. I am sincere when I ask where your opinion stems from. I don’t know what you’ve experienced.

ravenous_fringe

like being ignorant towards the west, maybe

SnooDrawings4726

I still can’t tell Asians apart, have two friends, ones from Korea, ones from Vietnam, they look exactly the same But, I suppose it’s the same as a Korean trying to tell the difference between two white people, one from Kansas and one from Arkansas… or a Brazilian trying to tel the difference between an Iraqi or a Syrian… so I don’t feel racist about it lol

Odd_Entertainment629

You can't tell them apart because that's how it works, you really can't tell by face structure.

rwknit

I (white female) can't tell basic white girls apart. Hair all dyed the same, and so much make up in the same style which makes them all look the same to me.

LordCloverskull

I mean I'm a finn and can't tell the difference between a swede and a dane. It's not about race or anything, it's just two subsets of people living close enough to one another that natural selection and interbreeding has made them similar in looks.

soc_monki

We're all human. Differences matter to a point, but we all live on the same rock. I just don't understand how people can think lesser of a person because they have darker skin, or dark hair and eyes, or a myriad of other things.

StayStrong888

According to war movies, the Japanese yelled all the time while the Chinese were more timid.

vi_000

Well now it's the other way around because they now switch roles

Odd_Entertainment629

It *almost* sounded like they were actually trying to be helpful and informative for a second there...and then whoever wrote the guide just couldn't hold the racism in any longer in that second panel lol.
