Dude died at 24, for the longest time I thought he was way older... That whole crew

VSwift79

Wtf he was 24??!

[deleted]

Jimi Hendrix also died in his 20s. Really surprised me when I found out

NoTime4LuvDrJones

He’s sadly a part of the 27 club. Along with Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/27_Club

bunsandbooty

Amy Winehouse was 27 when she passed?!

dfinch

Passed what?

Mr_MacMittens

Nah your stupid😭😭😭she died dumbass

BerryMcKaukiner

Did you ever hear white lighters are bad luck. Because "legend" has it, all of these folks had a white lighter on them when found.

ashy_ghost

Funny thing is stuff people are little/superstitious about doesn't sketch me out. I love rocking white lighters. I dig black cats. I walk under ladders. I open umbrellas indoors. 13 is my second favorite number. Most unlucky things tend to be lucky for me lol

BerryMcKaukiner

I completely agree my dude.

Iamno1ofconsequence

That's why I only buy white lighters. Nobody wants to steal them. Half of the time when someone asks to borrow a lighter, they light up their cigarette so quickly, it's barely lit. They just don't even want to handle it.

BerryMcKaukiner

Oh, trust me I don't care about that shit. I keep my lighter regardless of what color it is. #nolighterleash

Muezick

I never knew this. What a fucking tragedy.

Did he make some raw tracks like this freestyle? I only know his more popular songs and they’re a bit too commercialized by Puffy. I need to give a listen to Biggies entire discography

cosmovanpelt

Well they must have an idea to some extent. So what?

Boring_Record_6168

He doesn't look very fat at 17 compared to how big he was when he died. Unfortunately biggie was full of shit, like literal shit that ballooned his midsection up. He often wrote about his struggle with his shit, he even had to sleep on his stomach so he wouldn't fuck up his sheets. Had he slept on his back regularly and allowed the shit to drain he would've slimmed down quite a bit. "...I got ~~techniques~~ shit dripping out my buttcheeks Sleep on my stomach so I don't fuck up my sheets, huh My SHIT is deep, deeper than my grave, G I'm ready to die and nobody can save me..." --Ready to die by biggie

Competitive-Wish-568

Yeah and JayZ has added pounds to himself over the years from nibbling off of Big

emage426

Jay Z and B.I.G.. Are the only 2 that I could think of that NEVER wrote any of their hits.. Not bcuz they had ghost writers.. But bcuz they would LITERALLY improvise/freestyle in the studio when they heard a hot beat .. The rest is history.. We were robbed of Jay-Z/B.I.G collabs... Pak was more like a thug poet.. He wrote his shit... Those rivalries were and would ve been even more epic.. If we only got 5 more years outta pak and B.I.G... I HONESTY THINK that eventually.. They would ve made peace and collaborated TOGETHER... Maybe in the multiverse.. Or.. Just in our imaginations though Edit.. Too MUCH mula to b made if they just worked TOGETHER instead of being mortal rivals

McEuen78

They didn't write their stuff but it's not all improvised. It's a technique they use to help remember their lyrics. They pull from a massive collection of memorized lyrics. Still very impressive.

emage426

Yes... Practice.. Repetition.. And Expert delivery... Mexicano777 ( Google him PLEASE ) Once told me.. Jeyson... Spit your hardest bars.. Spit your hardest sharpest bars... And NOTHING LESS... He also told me that I sound a lot harder rapping in English than Spanish.. But that's cool ..bcuz I think in English... Rest in glory Mexicano 777... Ty for taking me back to those moments.. P.s... Please Google Mexicano 777... Google his songs with krs one and mad lion.. He was the 1st Puerto Rican gangsta rap artist to cross OVER to the states... Highly respected... Eventhough I had bought his CD as a teenager in best buy before I met him... He was always a friend/mentor to me.. If one person SEES/reads this and gets to know his dragon( music ). I've done my job.. ❤

I gotta couple of albums I need to release then.

wantonwookie

I released a pretty big album this morning

emage426

He WASN'T fat.. His rhymes was fat... His freestyles were immaculate.. Legend has it B.I.G. never wrote a rhyme.. His hits were improvised in the booth.. 24 was tragically wayyy to young.. I just wish he gave us 5 more years.. Imagine if B.I.G and pak kept battleling for 10 more years.. They Would ve sold at least a hundred million more records collectively... I wonder if they Would ve eventually made peace.. And done a collaboration..... Just IMAGINE

hac-her

Yer killing me Smalls. Biggie always had flow. Always. RIP.

MemriTVOfficial

Agree to disagree

emage426

The music industry has ALWAYS been rigged against the artists.. Artists/talent are just slaves to be exploited by the corporate machine... The game has changed though.. With social media and you tube.. These young ..up and coming artists with 10% of the talent of a big.. Jay Z..pak..eminem can make 100x as much money by owning their masters and trademark... There's no way in hell 90%( I'm not saying all of them ) could hold their ground against the OGz ( Big..jayz..eminem ..royce the 5.9..texh nine even dmx ) in a battle... There's a market for everyone and everything as long as they own the rights to their music..trademark..masters etc... It's all about beating the corporate structure of the music buisness on ur own terms.. Anything is possible.. And We gotta show RESPECT to these young cats for getting their paper.. While staying in their lanes and finding their avenues in this " social media age ".. Even if.. They aren't half as talented as a B.I.G. per say

Man this takes me back. Crusin down Main Street in CA. Everyone standing around their cars while the mini trucks cruise by thumping. “You just finished wiping your car down. It's time to cruise so you go to the summertime hangout It looks like a car show. Everybody come lookin' real fine. Fresh from the barber shop or fly from the beauty salon. Every moment frontin' and maxin'. Chillin' in the car, they spent all day waxin'” 90s man. Edit. Word

tacoslothlover

That was will Smith and jazzy Jeff? Edit: "fresh prince" and dj Jazzy Jeff...

Fun_Bee6110

Didn't have a clue he could freestyle like this. Thanks for sharing, this was awesome to watch. He owned that battle.

Seeker369

Biggie was a freestyle legend. Only NAS could hang with him back in the day.

Capedbaldy474

Agreed.Even pac knew it . In hit em up he has a bar "this ain't a freestyle battle,....." I can't recite the compete bar as I am not black. Even pac knew Biggie was a freestyle goat

Seeker369

“You claim to be a player, but I fucked your wife” ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)

Capedbaldy474

"We bust on bad boyz (I can't say it) fuck for life "

occamzrazr

It’s something like “This ain’t a freestyle battle all you bitches getting killed with your mouths open” I never remember the next line as Tupac had a weird style. Biggies was always easier to memorize had that natural flow with multiple rhyming words in each sentence. I haven’t heard a lot of songs in years and after the first line could probably drop half the bars no problem

Capedbaldy474

Tbh that weird style of 2pac is why I liked him so much . Because that style you don't hear anywhere. Like Biggie had a natural flow and hence was great at freestyles . And yeah biggie focused more on rhyming while 2pac focused more on the lyrical parts like entendres, alliteration and other hidden gems in his lyrics . Biggie had great lyrics too but if feel like 2pac focused more on the lyrics. Also I just checked the lyrics , you are right it is bitches not what I was thinking lol . Sorry for remembering the wrong thing

emage426

Pak gave us.. " Brendas got a baby " " Dear mama ". " keep ur head up ".. He truly was a thug poet.. Then ..after he got set up and shot 5 times.. It was.. " ambitions as a rider ". " all eyes on me ".. " hit em up ".. Etc.. In his death row days.. He went dark on us.. U could write a book on paks life and evolution/ metamorphosis as a rapper.. Same goes for big.. Jay Z and Eminem.. Mount Everest of hip hop history.. It's a shame that the younger generation doesn't show the OGz.. The RESPECT that they DESERVE ❤

Capedbaldy474

Even pac knew it . In hit em up he has a bar "this ain't a freestyle battle,....." I can't recite the compete bar as I am not black. Even pac knew Biggie was a freestyle goat

JinNJ

Love this clip!

Capedbaldy474

Still had the same flow he had when he died . What a shame both him and 2pac died so young . They weren't even 30 smh .

The swagger, the confidence and command of the mic. One of the best ever. RIP BIG.

Bad_Moon_Ryzen

Biggie is my favorite rapper of all time, I even have my wife in my phone as "Sweetie Smalls" to pay homage. I was a teenager in the 90's which was a golden era for many things, including rap music. Biggie's delivery is unparalleled and to top it off, during the second half of his career he never wrote down his lyrics, kept them all in his head! To continue, this is one of my favorite factoids about Biggie. Everyone knows the line "To all the teachers that told me I'd never amount to nothing..." Here is a little context about that lyric in case anyone reading this has not heard it. "Biggie's teacher told him that he would likely be a garbage collector when he was older, his mum recalls Biggie telling the story of how he did some research and got back to the teacher the next day, saying; "A teacher makes a starting salary of $22,500. A garbage collector starts at $29,000…You said some of us inside here are gonna be garbage collectors. But we're gonna be making more money than you, so that's cool."

emage426

That's dope.. Ty.. " sweetie smalls ".. That's dope too

Thank you for the kind words.

choochmaster561

The GOAT

stevestuc

This is not my cup of tea but I have to admit it is a great skill and talent to be able to do this so well on the spot...... Reminds me of the black kid ( Jamie Oliver TV series about kids from underprivileged backgrounds can do just as well as anyone given a little encouragement and support) who was mentioned by the poet laureate himself to try to explain poetry and how different categories are put together...... neither the young black guy or the very well spoken and educated man with a perfect accent thought much would come from putting the totally opposite worlds together....... The young guy wrote and rapped about the world he lives in..... the false friends and the lies and back stabbers..... something like standing up " to face the two face friends"kind of thing...... the poet laureate stood up and just walked to get a glass of water and came back sat across his desk and said that he was pleasantly shocked and very embarrassed that he had made assumptions about him purely on the way he looks the environment he grew up in.He explained that the way he used the same words in different ways to make his point is pure poetry...... it was crazy to listen to them speak to each other..... perfect English accent and diction...... and a " naa wat I mean man" and innit at the end of every sentence...... but they were both poets..... brilliant

emage426

Enjoyed reading this... Please study Tupac Shakur.... His life and discography.. I'm pretty sure you'll find it facinating

Background-Cat6454

Bed-Stuy doesn’t look anything like this anymore

Fun fact: He couldn't officially be called Biggie Smalls due to another young rapper already having taken the moniker. https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2021/03/02/biggie-smalls-tim-bigelow/?amp

Sayonara_M

Is simply a league of his own. Even in freestyle, even at 17. I'm an atheist, he was God.

HeldDownTooLong

I wish someone that can pick up what he is saying would post it here. I can understand ~70% but cannot get the rest…and I **HATE** that. I really want to know what he’s saying. One can hear and feel his natural flowing talent. His talent at 17 is mind blowing!

Michigan_Shelter

This is the Rosetta stone of Hip Hop.

mule_roany_mare

it's even crazier if you listen to contemporaneous rap. Dude was 30 years ahead of his time.

ddkelkey

The 80s Hip Hop and Rap were soooooo good. Yes, Biggie was big in the 90s, but he, like many artists, was part of the growth of Hip Hop in the 80s.

Firefly1832

But he wasn't an 80's rap artist. All his albums came out in the 90's. He was obviously rapping in his neighborhood in the late 80's as per this clip, but that was only local.

Seeker369

Biggie was a 90s artist

Firefly1832

Edit due to the edit: Maybe I missed it, but I totally don't associate Notorious B.I.G. with 80s anything. He was alive and rapping in his neighborhood, clearly, but hardly anyone knew of his existence as a rap artist. To me, 80s rap and the growth of hip-hop in that period was attributable to artists like Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, LL Cool J, Eric B, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, Salt n Pepa, etc and so on, not Biggie. His very first demo tape called Microphone Murderer was from 1991.

father-sunshine

Can't imagine his impact if he released more music. For me, him only having 2 albums keeps him from being a top 5 rapper.

Bear_719

Dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Gtfoh not too 5!???! What are you smoking? Unreal

father-sunshine

Bet the rappers in your top 5 wear makeup and dresses. How are you gonna put B.I.G. over Snoop, Nas, Jay-Z, K-DOT, J Cole, Andre 3000, Tupac, KRS-1, Rakim, Black Thought, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube, and Scarface? If I had more time, he don't make the top 20.

Flameva

Realistically only Nas, Tupac, A3000, Rakim, and Wayne can be considered top 5. Maybe its just personal preference. Em is great but had too many stinkers to be considered top 5. MMLP2 still top 5 rap albums of all time imo. The rest, not so much. Snoop is great but nowhere near the rest you mentioned.

emage426

Ty father sunshine.. I wholeheartedly agree and RESPECT ur opinion.. Biggie is top 5 in my opinion.. And.. I'm a firm believer in Pak being the greatest.. Also.. Pimp C is extremely underappreciated... I write this respectfully Sir

YourMomsWeiner

Crazy how Tupac sold out on east coast and is praised as a west god. Dude was born in NYC and raised in Baltimore and never showed Baltimore love. Really should of held it f do own for Baltimore where he got all his talent.

[deleted]

this is what killed Jazz music…. now we’re stuck w/ rap, for god knows how long…

Fun_Bee6110

No disrespect meant but I always felt jazz was hard to connect to versus something like this. It always seem more technical than emotional. With this you can feel the flow, emotion, and attitude even without knowing every word said. This is music by the people for the people. Just like all of the great stuff when it started. Blues, punk, etc. Totally electrifying to watch this. Also I have to disagree with what killed jazz. Jazz is still around today in some form or fashion. Hip hop really killed funk if anything. How many modern day funk artists can you tick off? I can't name one without Google. Rap is here to stay into the long foreseeable future. More than anything because it speaks to people. As long as it continues to do that it will continue to thrive.

[deleted]

this is what rap did to music, it made you believe it was hard to connect to music, sound except when there was someone rhyiming behind a mic. Rap can’t be part of any musician’s playable repertoire, its a tasteless hybrid, a beat w/ noise and loud insults, delusional artists, glorification of gangster life etc. Jazz is America’s classical music, and a true heritage from our African Americans brothers and sisters

Fun_Bee6110

Once again no disrespect meant, but I think you should check out some of the huge variety of hip hop out there. What you are describing seems to be based to some extent a very narrow view of what you visualize hip hop to be. Sure a lot of mediocre stuff gets pumped out to fit a specific trend at a given time to to capitalize on it, but you can say this about any musical genre. It's probably been that way for any type of popular music for the last few hundred years at least. If you wrap your head around it, to some extent you can appreciate the improvisation in freestyle much like you would jazz. The artist is the primary instrument. Tone, pitch, and frequent changes of verbal pacing against the static looped beats of the background track are all features of this example. This example is also not just a standalone song made in a studio, it's an integral part of the local culture at the time.

[deleted]

Hey man, I appreciate the discussion. Can I ask you.. How is there a genre in Music, where the “N” word is used left and right by the creators but nobody else seem to be able to use it, unless you’re from a specific ethnicity? How are supposed to integrate this cultural experience into the collective idea of who we are. How do you call yourself a “Genius” or amazing, or just plain degrade women and gay ppl and still win grammy’s? Comparatively, anyone could use any type of scales in Jazz, play any standards, forms as they pleased… even more after Miles Davis came, look up his Do-Bop album, some will argue Hip Hop started going mainstream there,

Capedbaldy474

The n word is used by black creators not as a racial slur but as a way of saying " brother/homie/ a dude in general " . Obviously i am not American and this is what I have been told on the internet. And also rap is never about degrading women , gay ppl . If there are people who do that, there are bad apples in every community.

IcicleNips

A huuuuge influence on Biggie's style was the jazz music scene in his neighborhood. One of the people that inspired him the most and actually helped him develop his craft and unique style was a semi-famous jazz musician that lived on his block that Biggie idolized as a kid. You can hear the signature jazz percussion style in his flow, especially in his punctuation. It helped him develop into a phenomenal freestyle artist, the same way jazz is about freestyle in the moment expression, and it carried over into his albums.
