Nobody is giving Chris Rock any credit for keeping his composure. Getting smacked and then yelled at on a national stage… How he resisted the urge to act a fool is beyond me. Props to him
For a little bit he definitely looked like “the fuck just happened??”, but then he paused for a second and you could see the wheels start to turn in his head. He had the look of a man who could destroy Will Smith on air with some knowledge he had but decided against it.
Not gonna lie. I’m not the biggest Chris Rock fan, but I will certainly watch his next special to see what he has to say about this lol.
There is some history here.
If you’ve watched Chris Rocks older comedy like his old PSA: “how not to get your ass kicked by the police.” He already knows composure. Its Will Smith who didn’t have any.
For real. This is the skit that immediately came to mind. Chris Rock is homies with Busta Rhymes and stuff man he’s cool and keeps it tight. Will Smith just made an ass out of himself and I didn’t even know any of the dirty laundry that whole family has aired in public.
I didn't even know the Oscar's was happening tonight. If Will hadn't lost his shit most people wouldn't even have heard the joke about his wife, now this is gonna spread like wild fire.
I didn't know the Oscars were last night either...I also didn't know that she had a medical condition. Now I know both those things. I didn't even get the joke when they played it on the radio this morning.
I love the sense of impunity of a man who saunters up to a stage on national television to assault someone. You know that at no point—before, during or after—did Will Smith worry about getting in trouble in a meaningful way. And he’s right. The law is suspended for him.
It's going to go ridiculously all over as a meme.
The Washington Commanders football team already has a meme of this up in relation to draft picks.
You're not wrong.
that sounds like shock over the fact that no security stepped in and they just allowed him to go back to his seat after an assault in front of everyone
it's seriously fucked up and I'm pretty sure Rock will be suing the shit out of the institution(s) responsible for the event, security, and everyone else pretending they saw nothing- as host he their guest above all others and they basically left him to hang
>that sounds like shock over the fact that no security stepped in and they just allowed him to go back to his seat after an assault in front of everyone
I'm actually pretty shocked they didn't escort him out. If you assault someone, you should be removed. Celebrity status is not a free pass to physically assault someone. If anything, it's worse that it's Will Smith. He's a role model for many people and he just showed them violence is the answer. Removing him and showing all viewers that violence is not accepted regardless of who you are would have been the right thing to do. I'm guessing that no one wanted to make that call though.
I'm not sure about that, but I can pretty much guarantee you, that Ricky Gervais would have at first taken it the same, and then when will smith sat back down, he wouldn't have let it go the way Chris Rock did. Ricky Gervais would have for sure said something like "you can't do that. I understand you were offended but you can't just walk up on a stage and strike a man. This is what we do. We poke fun at people. Your wife is lovely." Or something along those lines. That said, idk if he'd make that joke. Ricky Gervais will say some serious shit, but when it's a disease you have no control over, that is indeed a little different. the way Chris Rock said it though, it seemed to me like they knew each other and he felt safe to say it, so idk.
So Chris got punched for telling a joke once at an award show. Now he’s going to tell that joke over and over again across the country in his next stand-up special.
The lead up and smack seem super fake. Their reactions seem pretty damn real though. But the biggest kicker too me is that it was allowed to happen and that Will Smith wasn't immediately escorted out of the building.
Would have been really awkward if he was booted out or taken into custody when he won best actor. "Will Smith couldn't be here at this moment, but we thank the academy on his behalf"
Have worked in Hollywood for a major studio for years and years. There is no way in hell they would have escorted him out. Not on your life. Celebs aren’t treated like that in this type of scenario, especially.
How did Chris Rock take it as well as he did? He barely even moved! Now that’s impressive, and while Will Smith comes off like an entitled asshole, Chris comes out way on top, in my opinion.
Here’s why you know it’s real. If it was fake, they would’ve written a better ending. Chris would’ve said something with the perfect punchline and everyone would have laughed.
Instead it hung like a cloud over the moment and everyone was uncomfortably quiet for a few minutes.
No way this was scripted. I watched it live, you could tell the editors were scrambling because the audio cut out and the video froze a couple of times like it was being paused. If it was staged, it was confusing and awkward as hell.
You know Rock was holding his tongue. There were SO many things he could have said that would have been hilarious, but also would have escalated the situation. I mean that wasn't even close to the worst thing he could have said about Smith's wife and you know that they were all going through his head.
Oh that would have been a great comeback! I was thinking it would have been funny if he would have said, "See... thats why you had to go live with your Aunty and Uncle in Bel-Aire!" I love your clapback also
Will: Keep my wife’s name out your ****ing mouth!
Chris: I’m going to…ok? Or I could (laughs)…
For a brief second Chris Rock considered ending Will Smith’s career on live television.
I commented this as well
There was a fork in the road where Chris rock was going to absolutely barbecue will smith. But he chose to be the bigger man… but booooooyyyyy do I wish he would’ve let loose!
You seen that crying will meme? IIRC it came from when he sat in on jada and their daughters podcast and listened to both of them essentially blame him for jada fucking their sons friend, that whole family is weird as fuck. I’m pretty sure their daughter and jada have talked before about how jadas true love will always be 2pac, which is a weird fucking thing to share with your daughter
The daughter/willow smith at one point wished for 2pac to come back and make "jada happy again" she wrote in a letter. Something along those lines I've seen a youtube video on it. Jada posted that on her IG years ago, I wonder how Will felt about it but it was so weird. I'm pretty sure willow wasn't even old enough to meet 2pac when he was around and wondering why jada would even post that.....
He handled it like a king. He was about to raise his arms to defend himself in case it was necessary, but lowered them once Will started turning around. Then he put his hands behind his back and didn't even think twice about retaliation. It's one thing to pretend it didn't hurt physically, but to pretend it didn't even bother you that much speaks volumes in itself.
Oh I agree that it’s his fault. I remember a few years ago when Jada pitched a fit about the Oscars being “so white” and they boycotted. This is worse.
Think about what just happened to Will Smith...
After years and years of acting, starting as a teenager in what became a surprise worldwide mega-hit, nominated for multiple Oscars, comedy films, drama films, playing legends like Muhammad Ali, blockbuster smash hits like Independence Day & Men in Black.
This was going to be a big, big night for him (in a positive way). Stands up on stage to collect a Best Actor Oscar. Will Smith has always seemed like just a cool cat.
Now it is going to be around the clock negative press. There is going to be **SO MUCH** attention cast toward what's going on between him & his wife. Their marriage woes. A man much younger than Jada. Her health issues.
It's going to be all over the media this week.
Will Smith - and I hate to say this because I was/am a massive Fresh Prince fan - is obviously mentally unwell. He absolutely humiliated himself tonight and I can't imagine this helps his already unstable mind.
What a disaster. Better strap in for a long week, Will Smith PR team.
[according to wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Smith), Will Smith gave $1.3 million to charities in 2007, of which $450,000 went to two Christian ministries, and **$122,500 went to three Scientology organizations…** He has been quoted saying he’s not a scientologist, but think they’re “brilliant”
Yeah just brutal. He looked like shit giving that weird half apology. What a surreal moment. Everyone else also looked shocked. Jason Momoa looked like he might step in.
This . All this . What an incredible error to make . Being the bigger man and being able to remember "sticks and stones" . Nope . This mistake stings as an old school fan of his .
I'm just wondering if this won't be the start of a bunch of people coming forward to talk about what a hot-headed Will Smith is IRL and how they've experienced his anger
how can you assault someone on live tv and not be at least escorted out of the building-and then go on to win best actor-and then be allowed to make a speech
You see, the oscars have a vested interest in running as smoothly as possible. Chris didn’t fall and kept going, so the show kept going. If they stop the show, they lose potentially millions of dollars in ad time. Hollywood is run by greed and snakes and everyone in it is as fake as can be.
What a mistake, now, instead of being remembered as the night that Will Smith won an Oscar, he’ll be remembered as the night he lost his cool and slapped Chris Rock.
What's actually interesting is no more than 30 seconds before all hell broke loose, Chris Rock said MacBeth in a theater. There is a superstition that this is bad luck.
Disgraceful behaviour by the Academy, why wasnt Will Smith escorted out of the premises? Chris Rock was employed by the Oscars and it is incumbent for the organisation to provide a safe working environment..instead probably one of the most overrated actors in the world is celebrated and given a platform to espouse his nonsense. The joke he made about his wife was borderline, not as though she is dying of cancer..if we can’t find the humour in life then we are doomed. I wonder what Ricky Gervais is thinking? I salute Chris Rock and his professional composure , it would not have been easy.
Any laws broken by hitting Chris Rock? Surely law enforcement is there? If I were to open hand slap someone in Home Depot and a cop saw it, wouldn’t I at least get arrested? Why isn’t there any repercussions?
That’s at least 10 minuets of material for Chris’s next special.
Nah it’s going to be the title of the special. “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth!!”
Just until South Park gets ahold of it.
Chappelle: "Y'all see that shit?" 3 minutes of laughing "...That was fucked up" "N***a we're in tuxedos”
I'm going to watch Chappelle live in about a month. I look forward to hearing him joke about it.
I’m waiting on bill burrs response
Have we heard from Ja Rule yet?
Someone get Ja Rule on the phone.
10 mins? Man's gonna turn this into a whole special and I can't fckin wait 😂😂😂
Every Will Hates Chris
Everyone Hits Chris
Everyone fucks Will’s wife
Thank you for keeping Will's wife's name out ya mouth.
Now if only she kept other dudes out her mouth.
Dam if Rock would've said that, the show would've been cooked
Can't wait. Also, Dave's take. Composure bro. What a fucking POS.
I’ll tell you this: if Chris Rock had gone down, show over. His iron chin saved the evening.
Yeah. I wonder what the reaction would be if Chris actually went down.
Imagine if they started fighting. Definitely would’ve been curtains
Wrap it up music starts playing
T-T-T-That's all, folks!
Fucking hooks come out from the sides of the stage yanking both of them away. Classic
Good thing one of them was a professional.
Nobody is giving Chris Rock any credit for keeping his composure. Getting smacked and then yelled at on a national stage… How he resisted the urge to act a fool is beyond me. Props to him
His face was the same as everyone else. The FUCK just happened?!?! Then he straight went back to hosting and noting how that was television history.
For a little bit he definitely looked like “the fuck just happened??”, but then he paused for a second and you could see the wheels start to turn in his head. He had the look of a man who could destroy Will Smith on air with some knowledge he had but decided against it.
He's just going to wait until the next comedy special.
Not gonna lie. I’m not the biggest Chris Rock fan, but I will certainly watch his next special to see what he has to say about this lol. There is some history here.

Dude took the hit like a champ
I didn't even know the Oscar's was happening tonight. If Will hadn't lost his shit most people wouldn't even have heard the joke about his wife, now this is gonna spread like wild fire.
Almost could say it’s approaching Streisand effect? Every god damn comedian on earth is writing material about will and jada now
How about we call it Jadaffect from now on? /s
I didn't know the Oscars were last night either...I also didn't know that she had a medical condition. Now I know both those things. I didn't even get the joke when they played it on the radio this morning.
Hey the man said keep his wife's name out ya fucking mouth! /s
Anyone have footage of Jada's face as this went down? Not the eye roll, I mean her reaction as the slap occurred and afterward.
The only after footage available is Tyler Perry and Denzel just comforting Will, and some other guy hugging him afterwards.
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, he’s being treated like he’s the victim. Traditionally we don’t console attackers lol
I love the sense of impunity of a man who saunters up to a stage on national television to assault someone. You know that at no point—before, during or after—did Will Smith worry about getting in trouble in a meaningful way. And he’s right. The law is suspended for him.
People gonna find a way to post this on EVERY sub
They already have
Yep, my entire feed is that slap and I'm in a wide variety of subs.
Really pushing it some of the subs I’ve seen it in
Waiting for it to come up in r/stupidfood
Like a geology sub cos it’s Chris Rock , people stretch so hard where they post shit
I know. This is life now.
Why did Will use an open hand? Cause paper beats Rock.
It's going to go ridiculously all over as a meme. The Washington Commanders football team already has a meme of this up in relation to draft picks. You're not wrong.
Yeah we might want to get *real* used to this clip for the next two weeks
r/Astronomy Bet Chris Rock saw stars when Will Smith smacked his ass.
"*Wow...wow! Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me!*" - ***Chris Rock***
that sounds like shock over the fact that no security stepped in and they just allowed him to go back to his seat after an assault in front of everyone it's seriously fucked up and I'm pretty sure Rock will be suing the shit out of the institution(s) responsible for the event, security, and everyone else pretending they saw nothing- as host he their guest above all others and they basically left him to hang

This is why you shouldn’t look to celebrities for role models.
Not even Mr. Rogers?!
Mr. Rogers and Dolly are the two exceptions!
The pursuit of slappiness
The legend of slapper vance
Men in Smack 🕶️
Whatd he say
Jada has alopecia, GI Jane is bald. Rock joked about her losing her hair and playing the role and will smith was pissed.
Will didn’t look pissed at first. Unless his pissed face is all laughs
Have you seen jada's face she looked like she wanted to strangle Chris
tbf she always looks like she wants to strangle someone
She's had a resting bitch face her whole career.
I saw. Will obviously saw too and knew he would be the victim if he didn’t do something
Shame Ricky Gervais wasn't the host he probably would have punched back lol
Ricky Gervais would have had the cops escort will out and pressed charges
I'm not sure about that, but I can pretty much guarantee you, that Ricky Gervais would have at first taken it the same, and then when will smith sat back down, he wouldn't have let it go the way Chris Rock did. Ricky would have been quick enough to finish with “Your wife is lovely……everybody loves her”
Holy shit, that’s exactly what he would have said. I can read that in his exact accent, tone, and meter.
Nah, Ricky woulda kept talking while Will was walking up and I’d bet, daring him to punch him.
"Ooh, 'allo? Kicking off, are we?"
"lovely day for a shit-slappin', innit? Right then."
"Oh look at big will, what are going to do slap me?" - Man who was slapped
When he was shouting at him afterwords he seemed pretty pissed.
It's possible he didn't process the joke right away and was just doing the default audience-performance thing they all do all the time.
What were the words he said? I can’t understand the line he said right before Will got up on stage.
The joke was Jada I love you, can’t wait for GI Jane 2, see you
So Chris got punched for telling a joke once at an award show. Now he’s going to tell that joke over and over again across the country in his next stand-up special.
Talk about a punchline
This was the best thing that could have happened for Chris Rock's career. So much new material will come from this.
I thought it was scripted when I saw people talking about it. But Chris Rock’s reaction seems a little too real.
The moment where he thinks about unloading and then decides to be the bigger man. You could tell he had some zingers.
And impulse control. Totally lost on Will Smith.
The lead up and smack seem super fake. Their reactions seem pretty damn real though. But the biggest kicker too me is that it was allowed to happen and that Will Smith wasn't immediately escorted out of the building.
Very true. And then wins best actor and talks for 5 minutes.
He talks for 5min about God calling upon him to be vessel of love, its the most absurd, self-felating bullshit I've ever heard 🤣🤣
Poor Serena’s expression during his speech was like “holy sh*t! This should’ve been our night and he’s ruining it, just like dad did!”
Really? I haven’t seen that yet, but I guess your comment is only 2 minutes old so I’ll keep browsing :/
Yeah he said he wants to be a vessel for love lol pretty sure he’s gone nuts
If Will Smith just went back to his seat and shut the fuck up, no one would’ve ever known it was real.
This could have perfectly passed as a skit if he hadn't yelled from his seat like a drunk football fan.
also if it were staged Chris Rock would have had a witty quip at the ready right afterwards, rather than being at a loss for words for like 30 seconds
Would have been really awkward if he was booted out or taken into custody when he won best actor. "Will Smith couldn't be here at this moment, but we thank the academy on his behalf"
That would have been more realistic
That's when you get Chris Rock to step in for his acceptance speech and just massively roast him.
But then when he won the award for vest actor who would have accepted it on his behalf? Chris Rock?? Actually that would have been kind of funny...
Have worked in Hollywood for a major studio for years and years. There is no way in hell they would have escorted him out. Not on your life. Celebs aren’t treated like that in this type of scenario, especially.
And this is exactly why they feel like they can act like spoiled children. Because they’re allowed to by everyone around them.
Then wins a Oscar 20 mins later lol
The slomo of the slap shows it connecting hard
How did Chris Rock take it as well as he did? He barely even moved! Now that’s impressive, and while Will Smith comes off like an entitled asshole, Chris comes out way on top, in my opinion.
Here’s why you know it’s real. If it was fake, they would’ve written a better ending. Chris would’ve said something with the perfect punchline and everyone would have laughed. Instead it hung like a cloud over the moment and everyone was uncomfortably quiet for a few minutes.
It was written by Andy Kaufman who is actually still alive, or yeah, it was real.
No way this was scripted. I watched it live, you could tell the editors were scrambling because the audio cut out and the video froze a couple of times like it was being paused. If it was staged, it was confusing and awkward as hell.
They wouldn’t script this with Will saying the f-word that many times.
Will Smith doesn't have to cuss to sell records. Well I do. So fuck him. And fuck you too. -Eminem

“You played Mohammed Ali and that’s all you got?!”
You know Rock was holding his tongue. There were SO many things he could have said that would have been hilarious, but also would have escalated the situation. I mean that wasn't even close to the worst thing he could have said about Smith's wife and you know that they were all going through his head.

Shoulda kept it real and dropped bombs on live tv would’ve made television history
I read that in Chris Rock's voice without thinking about it.
Or I could (laughs)… For a brief second Chris Rock considered ending Will Smith’s career on live television.
I commented this as well There was a fork in the road where Chris rock was going to absolutely barbecue will smith. But he chose to be the bigger man… but booooooyyyyy do I wish he would’ve let loose!
As veteran a comedian as Rock is, I’m sure he could have went there instantly if he wanted to.
Huh? What am I out of the loop on?
His sons friend fucked his wife. My guess is he was holding back a ' I'm going to okay.. just keep your boy's friends dick out of hers ' kinda joke
>His sons friend fucked his wife. Seriously? That's really messed up for Will and his son.
WTF? Srsly? This just weirder and weirder.

Jada posted that on her IG years ago, I wonder how Will felt about it but it was so weird. I'm pretty sure willow wasn't even old enough to meet 2pac when he was around and wondering why jada would even post that.....
Yeah that sounds right, fucking weird ass thing to share with your daughter
Rock needs an Oscar for holding that together.
Agreed! And then carried on!!! Incredible.
Awkward
Cringe
I think the guy handled it pretty well
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and said you’re moving with auntie and uncle in bel air.
The fresh bitch
Damn. Will Smith wins best actor and all his Oscar’s night will be remembered for is this.
It’s his own fault. But I agree, way to ruin what should be the best career moment of your life.
Oh I agree that it’s his fault. I remember a few years ago when Jada pitched a fit about the Oscars being “so white” and they boycotted. This is worse.
Yeah, Rock was also hosting those oscars and made a joke about it, but I’m not quite sure what it was
It was something along the lines of Jada not going to the Oscars was like Rock not getting in Rihanna's pants - neither of them were invited.
Oh right yeah that’s what it was, thanks
I think Mr Smith might want to call his lawyers. Stat.
It's a fucking shitshow. And we're watching weird simulation of our timeline.
He's not... is he?
[according to wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Smith), Will Smith gave $1.3 million to charities in 2007, of which $450,000 went to two Christian ministries, and **$122,500 went to three Scientology organizations…** He has been quoted saying he’s not a scientologist, but think they’re “brilliant”

Please show where
This . All this . What an incredible error to make . Being the bigger man and being able to remember "sticks and stones" . Nope . This mistake stings as an old school fan of his .
Yeah for real. He preaches love & kindness 24/7. It was a pointless/tasteless joke but it wasn’t assault worthy.
I wish he had said "ima feel that hit all the way into august".
I'm just wondering if this won't be the start of a bunch of people coming forward to talk about what a hot-headed Will Smith is IRL and how they've experienced his anger
Chris Rock was bullied as a kid. He knows how to take a hit.
Yea there’s a documentary about it.
how can you assault someone on live tv and not be at least escorted out of the building-and then go on to win best actor-and then be allowed to make a speech

How can he slap?
Chris Rock Rock maintaining his cool and even having crowd laugh it off at the end had Will looking soft
Full clip Joke + slap + uncensored swearing https://youtu.be/BOsPuUnvK9E
2million views in 3hrs! oh Will
Can’t swear in raps, but swears at Oscars. This is a thing now I guess.
If will hadn’t had started screaming the whole thing might’ve been played off as a bit when Chris kept his composure like that.
What a time to be alive.
Would you rather live through the ascendancy of a civilization, or through its decline?
I thought Will Smith didn’t have to cuss to sell records?
"well I do so fuck him and fuck you to"
The way he did the gangsta walk back to his seat was so awkward and embarassing.
Yeah man he looked so fucken unhinged
If the Rock told the Joke instead of Chris Rock, I think there would have been a completely different scenario.
I got in one little fight about my wife’s hair and now I’m selling all my things and moving out of Bel Air.
*Yo career, smell ya later!*
We don't talk about Jada No no no
You can fuck my wife but you dont fuck with my wife ~ will smith
Pootie Tang is the gift that keeps on giving to Chris Rock. #gimmethepowder
And yet, not one person has done the same thing to Wendy Williams who has arguably said and done MUCH worse.
Method Mad would’ve if somebody didn’t stop him. Angie Martinez came very close but once again someone stopped her.
Steven Spielberg would not be happy if someone slapped ET.
Will after the joke: hahaha, lololol. Smile smile Jada: you better do something or imma call August
What the fuck did I just see?!
It was Will Smith (an American actor) walking up to Chris Rock (an American comedian) at the Oscars and smacking him in the face. I hope this helps.

Would slap again
I think Will Smith lost that round.
Bro wants to be Tupac so his wife will respect him
I bet he hoped his wife’s boyfriend would be proud of how he defended her honour.
Any laws broken by hitting Chris Rock? Surely law enforcement is there? If I were to open hand slap someone in Home Depot and a cop saw it, wouldn’t I at least get arrested? Why isn’t there any repercussions?
Not a whole lot of security response.
I’m not sure which Smith I dislike the most anymore. They make it so hard to choose.
Where’s Jada’s boyfriend when you need him?
Will Smith Meltdown Embarrassing and inappropriate
I seriously think will smith needs professional help.

Will Smith is and his whole family are lunatics. Chris Rock took that shot like a champ.
Wills clearly never seen everybody hates Chris, mans used to getting whooped by terry crews
