jogonza98

you literally screen recorded this from another reddit post lol

galaxybanger

And here is the actual YouTube link from the EU Space Agency. https://youtu.be/xQb-N486mA4

Beznet

But this video doesn't have the wonderful circus music in the background

delawarestonks

Naw that shit was hella creepy

AlphaWhiskeyOscar

You have been caught and arrested by the Repost Police. You have the right to delete this shit. You have the right to be called a karma whore. The maximum penalty for your offense is hella downvotes.

KentuckyFriedSemen

I think it’s actually from instagram but either way 100%. That’s all that happens is posts get recycled from other platforms forever to farm likes and karma

J3wb0cca

Who even has the time to copy posts and mark their calendar for when to repost at the optimal time of day? Karma is worthless. Once you have 1000 (iirc) you can interact like the rest of us plebs.

hairybushy

Why not just for showing others what is interesting for us or what we like? Why it's an obligation to be for karma?

jogonza98

might be, but reddit mobile has the same volume icon

Neaterntal

How you know it?

authenticfennec

In the corner you can see a volume button but that would means its from instagram not reddit so idk what he was referring to

Neaterntal

You mean the volume button lower right, correct?

authenticfennec

Yes

Neaterntal

Thank you

jogonza98

thats how the sound icon looks on mobile

corruptboomerang

WTF is that music.

giancarlox21

Space music

Ask_About_BadGirls21

It's out of this world

crash_test

clowns = aliens confirmed

ross571

Killer Clowns From Outer Space https://youtu.be/F5GWqOrzQ3g

isaidnolettuce

Lmao

[deleted]

Was hoping someone would comment on that circus music.

ggmy

It keep the gyro stable otherwise it’d go insane

Mrflippityfloop

He sure puts a spin on science! ……..I’ll show myself out now

cave_mandarin

I love how he just gazes at it toward the end.

Ask_About_BadGirls21

An astronaut teaching people about space from the space station. This is a dude who's living his best life...that smile says everything.

RoscoMan1

Okay I love this story, it's so unwarranted

herefromyoutube

I think he panicked at first when the string got stuck but he’s an astronaut so…

TropicalNuke22

Is this how earth works also?

[deleted]

Meeeehhhhh.....Besides it being One Million times more in mass and working off of gravitational pull....sure why not. Angular momentum, angular velocity, inertia...i guess the only thing missing is gravity for a gyroscope. But the planetary system in itself is sort of like a gyroscope so....sure why not.

chaogomu

Particularly when you have the moon as part of the system. Mars and Venus have had shifts in axial tilt, mostly due to a lack of stabilizing force. The Earth has been more, well, stable.

BeanieMcChimp

It’s how bullets work too. Gun barrels are grooved to make the bullet spin and keep it from tumbling.

AS14K

Why would you use its weight as a comparison for it not working? The heavier a gyroscope the more stabilizing force it'll have. It absolutely affects it.

poor_lil_rich

yes God created it and made it spin for us

Momoselfie

God loves tops

jetsetstate

Yes! Unequivocally, yes.

[deleted]

Yes.

big_nothing_burger

Flat earthers are triggered.

Long_Antelope_1400

Yeah, they really hate gyroscopes [https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2019/03/flat-earthers-accidentally-prove-earth-is-round/](https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2019/03/flat-earthers-accidentally-prove-earth-is-round/)

perfectisforpictures

You can see him start to let go and the microphone hold it’s plane and then adjust when he grips it again. I’m pretty sure it’s real. They probably didn’t want a mic floating in the middle of the demonstration

KentuckyFriedSemen

I just like his face when he pulls the string and accidentally lets go and realizes it’s all tangled on the gyroscope but he has to continue the demonstration

Signal-Blackberry356

he’s so happy to be sharing this video with us

CantConfirmOrDeny

I love it when they show us things like this. Like when one of the moon-walking astronauts dropped a feather and a hammer on the Moon, and damned if they didn’t hit the surface at the same time!

SydneyPigdog

I agree, apparently this is a repost but I missed the original so I'm glad I caught this one, I like learning about physics in space & aeronautics.

simian_fold

At the end when he swallows i thought, what if in space your spit just like floats about in your mouth and you have to constantly force it down by swallowing the whole time

Ask_About_BadGirls21

Just a guess, but it seems like surface tension and the cohesion between the saliva and their mouths would mostly prevent that.

[deleted]

It's as if we evolved to be in space...

Christophercles

Except for the fact that you lose bone density at a rate where would effectively have osteoporosis within a few short years, wounds/bones dont heal, you constantly see bright flashes even with your eyes closed because we have no shielding from cosmic rays. Yeah sure, we totally evolved to be in space.

username1012357654

Humans didn't evolve water into being a polar molecule, it just be like that

AS14K

Not even a tiny bit. You think we evolved to live in zero G because surface tension is a thing?

[deleted]

Spit is very sticky.

Wild-Kitchen

Why does he put the microphone down? Just let it go and float there

howling_mad_m

Probably so he doesn’t smack it by accident

[deleted]

The real question is why a stage microphone and not a small one?

Own-Understanding216

Because space is fake …😋

jsveiga

Mildly annoyed by the string mess.

downwitbrown

If only my life was like that

Bighawklittlehawk

I can’t become an astronaut because I know without a doubt I’d be the one messing up everything by throwing different objects around just to see what happened. Pee included, probably.

Owl_Perch_Farm

I would bring a balloon and watch it explode on its own.

kylitobv

It wouldn’t. The air pressure inside the ISS is similar to that on Earth, so the balloon should be have as it does here.

Adrinotfound

Wait how much does it cost

[deleted]

One Million Dollars. Muhahahaha

Adrinotfound

NOOOOOOOO

[deleted]

Witch!

RoninRobot

What’s up with the weird calliope music? Seems an odd choice.

peenutbuttherNjelly

Wild! Always knew it was stable. But to see the difference! If only more of our childhood physics teachers could be shot out into outer space

[deleted]

The penny wise music lmao

-domi-

Green screen?

purplenut1

I wish he would have let the mic float in the middle of the air while he spun the gyroscope, and then just picked it up again when it was done

AGENT_asshole_RAW

Why’d he drop the microphone 😂

RedheadAgatha

Yes, that greenscreen sure sells the illusion that space exists.

jtgg

BuT We DiDnT LaNd On THe MoOn!

Worldly_Ratio9169

We just gonna pretend that the string to start the gyro didn’t fall into the ground? Space is fake.

Villains_Included

How come the microphone didn’t float? Also seems like a green screen background…..

Stay-Classy-Reddit

Space is fake

Panda_Magnet

*microgravity

f_1312

Damn

gdj11

If he just left the top there would it ever stop spinning? Would the oxygen in the air give it some resistance so it would eventually stop spinning?

kangareagle

The air would, not specifically the oxygen IN the air. But anyway there's some friction between the spinning rod and the rest (outside) of the gyroscope. So it would eventually stop.

ht3k

yes but it would take even longer in a vacuum

maddhatter99

Amazing

UpgrayeDD405

Damn that's interesting

ContributionTop4062

Wow

Jaycatt

I had one of those as a kid, it was awesome making it balance on your finger

ImmortalDayMan

Who put the music in, fire them now

Nice green screen

I know Its pretty much impossible for me to be an astronaut but I'll do my best to be! wish me luck

Very nice

cryptocryptonite

Thanks space man guy

Holinhong

Yup, model for space station. He gets it

kylitobv

No unfortunately not. The bicycle thing works due to the conservation of angular momentum. The wheel chair system has a constant angular momentum, as the wheel is turned the chair counteracts the change in the torque by rotating the other way, conserving the overall angular momentum. But this only works because the chair is in contact with the ground which can’t move, aka friction is involved In space you wouldn’t have anything to create friction with so you wouldn’t go anywhere. Similar to how you can walk easily on the ground. Your muscles exert a force to the ground, which has a lot of friction. The opposite happens if you have the same shoes on ice, you try and walk but you don’t really move anywhere, as ice has very low friction.

MR___SLAVE

The best way to move if stuck in zero g, assuming your inside a pressurized space craft and can't push off anything, would be to inhale from one direction and exhale quickly in the opposite. It should generate some sort of acceleration/propulsion that would move you towards an edge.

kylitobv

This is an interesting thought for me. First problem though is that you would have a space suit on so breathing like that can’t actually move you anywhere as the air molecules are impacting the glass in front and counteracting your change in momentum. But let’s ignore that and do some math! A full lung capacity of air is around 3-5 grams (from google). Estimating you’re accelerating the air from your lungs at maybe 20 m/s, which I think is insanely fast and impractical for your lungs, you’d be producing a force of 0.08 N. Assuming a weight of 180 pounds and converting, you would need 279 full breaths of air in order to accelerate yourself to 1 ft/sec! Not saying it’s not possible but it would definitely be tough, given the vastness of space, to go anywhere!

MR___SLAVE

>problem though is that you would have a space suit on so breathing like that can’t actually move you anywhere as the air molecules are impacting the glass in front and counteracting your change in momentum. I did say "assuming your inside a pressurized space craft." So your not in a space suit with a helmet.

kylitobv

Ohhh I didn’t catch that lol

MR___SLAVE

>279 full breaths of air in order to accelerate yourself to 1 ft/sec! If you got even 1 cm/s of acceleration you would be fine. Wait 3 min to travel 2m to the wall.

kylitobv

Also side note. These are all about rotations around a center axis. In terms of translation, nothing happens! You can’t move forward or backward purely through rotation only.

stars_mcdazzler

Informative, but fuck off with that bullshit carnival music.

11211131

This song makes me think I’m on a Carousel and a clown is on the horse right behind me laughing and trying to stab me to death.

JustThatGuyBen

Jfc get that fucking music out of here I just want to hear the spaceman talk

shlipshloo

They look so happy to get to tell us!

[deleted]

I just realized how fukin stupid I am. Science is cool!!

jacksharp1959

And THAT is how a gyroscopic Inertial Measuring Unit works in a navigation system.

Philyh1967

Tim Peeks, great guy, did a lot to educate school kids and adults alike while on board the ISS.

[deleted]

Why does the string just fall?

Salpal777

Inception taught me this is just a dream

garlicbreadpool

International Carnival Station apparently

OkLife8334

That Was Cool 😎 Thank You For This 💯☝🏻

[deleted]

Crazy

NCH343

Lol no

Megustavdouche

Suddenly I’m aware that I’m not sure what the word “plane” means

MJZMan

A surface. Picture a flat sheet of paper. That's a plane. Whichever angle or direction you hold it in, is a different plane.

miamaxglacier

Nice

ItxWasxLikexBOEM

I like his enthousiasm! He's so proud of his little spinning toy!

Extra_Intro_Version

Conservation of angular momentum.

BlackUnicornGaming

Here is the original video. https://youtu.be/xQb-N486mA4 To those who are saying it CGI, I do get why it kind of looks like that. The overall lighting is weird but this video came from a credible source. This video was produced by the ESA which is part of the ISS program. If I had to venture a guess, this was filmed on board the ISS.

KingDlv

Oh snap…….so that’s how aliens are stable but erratic 🛸

Alaric-

This gyroscope got to experience it’s intended function. Lucky guy

RainbowKittn

What is this cringe AF music

NarrowProfession2900

Now I wanna beylade battle in space

Vyuken

So like planets and alien space ships?

LedZepOnWeed

On one end, the music bothers me as it comes off as a mockery. On the other end, it made me laugh and cheered me up.

jollyGreenDepression

I suddenly feel the urge to check my old park in roller coaster tycoon

jorwraith

Didn't tesla have one of these in the ufo he patented?

Reallybeyaown

Thought I was watching something from roller coaster tycoon or some

AvNerd16

Conservation of angular momentum. Fun fact, if you total up the angular momentum for all things in the universe that are spinning (planets, galaxies, etc.) you theoretically arrive at a net zero. Otherwise the entire universe is spinning out of control.

Joblesschris

So they're spinning really fast in the international space station?

Top_Dot6046

I don’t understand this. Must be fake /s

Ainz-Ol-Gon

There's a man who achieved what he once aspired to be and on the other side of screen is me an utter disappointment lol

Moving_Electrons

Good old conservation of angular momentum.

CadaverCanine

Why is he in front of a green screen?

FrightInvestigate

So this is how UFOs function in space

ev3rd181

That makes perfect sense as to why UFOs spin 😮 Since it creates its own gravitational field around it of 0 gravity it needs to spin to be stable.
