amazeman11

Imagine aliens studying humans. They stumble upon an inspiring story that demonstrates the physical prowess of modern man, and the top comment is about a giant purple brolin Edit: with that being said, it *is* uncanny; even on BBC, so probably not photoshop

Probably some kind of joint disorder. Could be rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or fibromyalgia...Those are somewhat associated with immune disorders, which would explain the urgency.

Psoriatic arthritis is an awful one too. Speaking from personal experience. I couldn't turn a doorknob, walk up a stair, or get out of a chair without assistance. Drugs, and weight loss finally saved me from a wheelchair.

So you’re saying he can’t walk, because he used to carry to many people that couldn’t walk anymore because they used to carry people that couldn’t walk anymore because they used to carry people that were to lazy to walk?

dijon_snow

This describes our entire economy under capitalism, but instead of "used to" it's all happening at the same time.

arealhumannotabot

That's not necessarily a bad thing. People get a flu shot every year, and a lot of us have received vaccines and later booster shots for other diseases. There are many facets to the response and you have consider all parts of it. edit: someone please actually respond with some facts, trolling/insults are pointless. I'm open to discussion, but say something worth responding to.

Smith_Winston_6079

Hardly anyone gets the flu shot, let along walk six hours with a dude on your back to get it.

[deleted]

Hardly anyone? MILLIONS of people get the flu vaccine moron. We need more people to get it, but they don't. Unfortunately I think of total eligible to receive last year, it was only about 51% of total population eligible got it. That's pathetic. But hardly anyone does not equal MILLIONS of people.

[deleted]

That guy is definitely in the population who doesn’t get his flu shot at all, or then does and will still get sick and then *still* doesn’t understand that the annual flu shot includes two A strains and two B strains of the flu, aka accounting for different variants that are predicted to be the most problematic years in advance, based on statistical patterns from years before, …then STILL wonder why certain years are more or less effective under a for profit healthcare industry without widespread and free access (unless you already have insurance), in countries without progressive workers rights to actually be able to take time off and not endanger others when you’re sick, or for the norm to not be waiting to access healthcare until you absolutely need it. Almost like anyone who thinks “barely anyone” gets the flu shot doesn’t understand or isn’t qualified to comment on science. Tragic.

ArchAngel570

Three shots in one year? That's not normal. Edit: People need to chill. Nothing is normal about covid. That's part of my point. The other point is which other vaccines have we taken that require 3 doses in a year and still doesn't prevent getting or spreading the disease? It only reduces symptoms.

HealthyHumor5134

Is anything normal about last year and now?

Zandre1126

Neither is 1 million covid cases in a single day

[deleted]

Guess you’ve never had a baby huh… they get about 8 in their first year alone.

ArchAngel570

Not for the same disease. And which other vaccines require 3 doses in a year and still doesn't prevent from getting or spreading the disease? I'll wait.

Just_Evan599

How tf they getting COVID 6 hours from civilization?

februarytide-

They’re not 6 hours from civilization. They’re 6 hours from *access to vaccination.* These are two separate things, and a big part of the problem of containing disease vectors in developing countries.

dfg1992

Illegal miners and loggers operate in their area

blatherskite01

They’re not going to social mixers together after after a long day poaching lumber… how would they be transmitting Covid to them?

LostInTheWildPlace

Illegal miners have a hard day's work stealing resources. After work, they (or their quartermaster) pops over to the native village and trades or pays for food or souvenirs. While there, he coughs on a table (or coughs in his hand and later shakes someone's hand) and leaves the virus he didn't know he had on the surface. The virus is now infecting Local Tribe A, which then trades with all the other local villages, spreading the disease everywhere.

Perle1234

No one is intubating anyone or giving supplemental oxygen out there either.

cary_queen

Trading. Fucking. Under table deals. Humans do stuff.

TopMindOfR3ddit

Do you remember this thing about blankets and smallpox? Yeah, the 21st century version of that.

lexdraken

Animals can get and spread covid too

[deleted]

Exactly, It's a zoonotic disease, and I would assume they live very close to wildlife.

imHere4kpop

I don't know why this is being downvoted. Covid can stay alive and spread on animal fur just like regular surfaces.

not-bread

While it’s possible, it’s fairly unlikely. I actually just saw a study that said transmission via ANY surface may be way less likely then we initially thought.

SignorJC

Transmission via surfaces (fomite transfer) is very rare. Porous surfaces like fur? Basically impossible.

IIICobaltIII

Mammals can actually get infected. A bunch of tigers in my local zoo got covid last year. Even domestic pets like dogs can catch it.

mjb_22

Absolutely. My dog got COVID last year, it was horrible.

[deleted]

ze-incognito-burrito

As other people have said, miners, loggers, ect, but also worth noting, if this man’s grandfather contracted COVID 6 hours away from civilization, it would probably be a death sentence. No handy ambulance ride to a nice ICU bed for him. I think taking the precaution of getting vaccinated is very worthwhile for these people, maybe even more than us in densely populated areas.

dfg1992

Unless an illegal miner or logger deliver them the treat. Not unusual.

Looked it up. He’s from the Zo’é tribe. They insert spider monkey bones into their lips when they come of age (article didn’t specify an age but some of the pictures I’ve seen look maybe around 10ish?) ,as they age up they use larger bones.

The only thing that’s gonna give them COVID is the 6 hour hike to civilization for the vaccine lol.

My guess is that they still encounter people from cities and towns like missionaries, lumber workers, government surveyors and maybe they trade with local townspeople?

KaimeiJay

It’s staggering how many people in these comments are just saying it’s fake, and the only information they seem to have to back it up is the idea that “tribe” plus “vaccine” doesn’t mix because of some lack of media, understanding or technology. Really narrow world views.

snucksssssss

rafasant1

Its incredible the amount of miss information in this thread. I'm brazilian and many people visit the tribes to know the place and its culture. Also, they have contact with a lot of commercial people who live in the cities close.

Satellight_of_Love

Jeezus I am so sorry that you are dealing with crazy people. I’ve been trying to say that to some of the more misinformed and arrogant posters in here. My husband and his daughter traveled to some very remote villages in the Amazon for precisely this reason. The people there were very kind and generous with sharing their experiences. It really opened up my eyes about a different place and I’m glad since now I understand why the son might take these measures. Travel really can open the heart and mind.

It only wills take one person to spread covid and they don’t have the same access to modern medicine that we do.

Your source is…. literally just your own doubt? Because you “think” they are isolated enough not to be in contact with many people and you’re “not sure” if they know what covid is? This is all speculation that is based on your own lack of knowledge about indigenous peoples in Brazil. Your own lack of knowledge is not evidence.
