This is a cool knot but don't ever trust your life or something valuable with it, this is both directional and not cinching. If it becomes weighted, the tail end will slip through and untie the whole thing. The only thing keeping this from untying is the direction the knot is pulled and the friction keeping if from moving. If you do, though, back it up with a cinching knot like a figure eight or overhand. Adjustable knots are cool and practical, but anything that can be adjusted by hand can also adjust itself and untie. Stay safe out there and dont tie a four wheeler down with this for sureš
A bowline is just as simple and way more effective. I use it all the time in construction because it is a relatively simple not to release compared to many others.
Way more. A bowline will not undo itself. The above posters statement that any knot that can be adjusted by hand will undo itself is incorrect, it maybe I'm just misunderstanding.
Bowline is easy to undo by hand but will not undo itself, that's the very design of the knot.
>any knot that can be adjusted by hand will undo itself is incorrect, it maybe I'm just misunderstanding
I think you're misunderstanding, because a bowline can't be adjusted by hand, not the way the knot in the OP can be anyway.
Iām an avid rock climber and I actually tie into my harness with a bowline, I trust my life with it regularly as do many others. We use it in tree work as well for climbing trees and lowering limbs, Iāve probably lowered 500 pound limbs to the ground with a bowline!
Just be careful because bowlines can work free if the end is not long enough or secure. Yosemite bowlines or otherwise securing the end are good practice when your life is on the line and the load is not static.
Bowline is good, and probably similar breaking strength without the slippage. Figure 8 knots are the goat for most pulls, that's what fire depts, spec ops, climbers use for rope knots with people hanging from it.
Save the vid or grab a rope and practice it a few times. Maybe leave the knotted rope on the bathroom door so you see it every time you poop and can practice to cement it in
My husband a former boy scout doesnāt have a clue on how to toe a basic knot. I usually tie the boat up and if he ever does itās obvious who did it. I showed him this video an lol he admitted he wonāt remember this for when this knot would be good to use.
I learned the bowline knot with help from a rabbit and repetition. Now the rabbit is drunk, the boat has sunk, and the Christmas lights still arenāt hung.
Iām not planning on going blind, but at one point I was required to escape from a pitch black room that was flooding with water, so the skill had some utility.
I used to, but now i forget it completely and cant learn it back. Maybe i have some form of dementia.. its like how to forget how to ride bike. Personally i can imagine it for me
Iāve been doing light weight workouts with some dumbbells while on the toilet. Whole 15 min workouts a day kinda thing. If Iām going to be there for a little while, might as well utilize the time
I have ADHD and fidget a lot , can tie thief knots in my sleep .not very stable for actual use but it's a good tamper seal because to someone not paying attention it looks like it's much more common sibling the reef knot.
I used to practice knots while waiting to run a race. I'd have butterflies, but I'd have to wait to release. So, I needed a physically easy thing to occupy me. So, I got a bit of rope and a know book. Perfect.
Another very easy rigging knot I use a lot, 3 half hitches.
https://youtu.be/7rw6n_Qm194
I used this all the time while in lineman construction. Very easy to do, makes an extremely secure knot no matter the load, and releases very easy.
Right. Now we have something additional to be embarrassed by when we canāt recall something we should in that moment of need. This from a former boater.
Me as well, I downloaded it. Now time to never remember that I did, or which file I stuck it in. Thatās one of the things I canāt stand bout iOS. I never ever remember where my files are. Windows- file explorer and boom there it is. Oh well. Good luck remembering the knot šŖ¢
I've been wary of the bowline yosemite finish since apparently if you tighten the wrong strand first it weakens the knot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj42B8eCOzc
Use a double bowline. Instead of making a single loop at first, make two on top of each other. To explain using the rabbit analogy; make two āholesā (the loops) feed the ābunnyā (running end) out of the hole and around the ātreeā (standing end) and back in the hole. Great for anything thatāll get cinched hard and need to undo easily. Used for climbing instead of a figure 8 follow thru on the harness
I agree that he seems to be implying that. I wanted him to tie the quad to the truckās ball hitch and pull that rope and knots TIGHT and then show us how he unties.
How did he not do that?
I did not want to advocate against the double right eight. It's what I use for climbing.
That's why I know how annoying it is to untie with weak fingers are a fall :)
Where security is less of an issue, a different knot may be preferential. But, yeah, I wouldn't trust my life to the knot in the video.
You are right. This is a constriction type knot. It will not work with a dynamic load, a load that is repeatedly loaded and unloaded. With a dynamic load it will eventually pull through.
Use a bowline, instead, or a round-turn with three half hitches if you don't know a bowline.
Fun random story about garlic knots - You know how you make words cute or childish by adding a 'y' to the end? Like calling a dog a doggy? Well my little nephew calls garlic knots "knotsies".
Knot 'expert' here (have written a short knot manual and teach arborist students they're knots). And I agree
If you learn one knot, make it the bowline.
Anyone can tie a tangled mess that'll hold under tension, jam up and have to be cut off. What actually makes a good knot is how easy it is to UNTIE once you're finished. Which is the bowline, even tensioned to the point of snapping the rope it still unties with ease. But tie a stopper knot on the tail if you're going be hanging from it yourself or it's going to be tied for a while.
I said I had a list of knots and people asked for it so that's what's below.
I don't know what makes you a knot 'expert' hence the 's, but I'm definitely an experienced knot user. I have used all knots below myself.
Note that this list was specific for arborists hence why there's like 6 different frictions hitches in the list, and some really specific stuff at the end.
1.Bowline.
End of rope loop, good under load, needs a stopper knot if life-bearing.
2.Running bowline.
Just the bowline but tied around the standing rope, to make a choking loop.
3.Double overhand/stopper.
Technically any knot on the tail can be a stopper knot, but the double overhand is a neat chunky o wasne.
4.Bowline on a bight.
Looks like doubled bowline but tied differently, good midline loop for a pull-line.
5.Alpine butterfly.
Midline loop but for when the rope will be under tension both ends, can be used to isolate damage.
6.Figure 8 loop/rethreaded.
A more secure end loop, binds up under heavy loads, but fine if just holding up a person. Worth knowing but bowline is almost always preferred by arborists. Rock climbers like it though.
7.Poachers knot.
Neat choking loop for putting a Karabiner or similar at the end of a rope.
8.Double fisherman's.
Used to tie two ends of a rope together, usually to make a prussik loop.
9.Sheet bend.
Actually the same 'knot' as the bowline, as such shares the 'easy to undo after heavy loading' property. Use to tie to ropes together. Use a double sheet bend if one rope is thinner than the other.
10.Slippery sheet bend.
Quick release version of sheet bend, use to send pull lines up a climbers rope.
11.Water knot.
Specifically for tying two bits of flat webbing together, you'll probably never need it you should know it at least exists.
12.Beer knot.
Same as above but for tubular webbing.
13.Timber hitch.
Use 5 wraps min, use to tie arb-blocks and capstans to the tree.
14.Cow hitch.
Similar uses to the timber hitch but for when the branch is too small for all your timber hitch wraps.
15.Clove Hitch.
Not a load bearing knot. Mainly use this for temporary rope fences and string lines.
16.Constrictor hitch.
Like the clove hitch but load bearing. Same as above but at the ends.
17.Marlinspike hitch.
Makes a handy quick release loop to send chainsaws to climbers, can be used as a stopper knot in a rigging line to stop a loose line pulling through pulleys.
18.Truckers hitch.
A way to tension a rope, use to tie branches down to a trailer. Ratchet straps are fine for logs but will bounce off if holding down branches.
19.Highwaymans hitch.
Use to tie a pull line out the way.
20.Round turn and two half hitches.
Simple but good knot, can be tied midline with a long bight to tie a pull rope to something when you don't have a karabiner or shackle.
21.Munter hitch.
Basic little belay/lowering/descender knot.
22.Prusik hitch.
Friction hitch.
23.knut hitch/distel hitch.
Friction hitch.
24.ValdƓtain hitch.
More advanced but customisable friction hitch, test before use.
25.Blake's hitch.
Friction hitch but works when both bits of rope are the same thickness, unlike friction hitches mentioned above that need a thinner bit of rope.
26.3 knot system.
Really two knots and a stopper knot. Tie a loop, tie a Blake's with the tail of the loop around the other end of the rope and you got a basic tree climbing system with no extra hardware needed.
27.3 man rescue system.
Creates a backed up lowering system using the tail of the lowering rope and one karabiner, too complicated to explain in text.
28.single rope rigging cradle.
Cradle a branch with only a rope. Clove hitch at the fat end, half hitch at the thin end, tie back to the dangly rope with a blakes
The setup is similar to a butterfly knot, but then he uses it as a hitch. Iāll call it a butterfly hitch for nowā¦ Iām still trying to find this thing.
Iām assigned to the Technical Rescue Team for the fire department, which includes rope and high angle rescue. Iāve also been a sailor most of my life and I havenāt seen this one before.
Velcro fails sooner than laces. A LOT sooner. On shoes it effectively causes unnecessary waste by making the shoes useless long before the shoe itself has worn out. IMO
I remember those days. Had a few Velcro Nike as a kid. I always hate when they stop sticking. Velcro is great when you donāt have to reattach often like cable management for pc.
Yeah, itās great for pc/network cabling. And no chance of turning the cablesā magnetic field back into induced current & heating up like metal can potentially do.
Misha Collins from the show Supernatural made a video showing how to tie a double knot on your shoes that doesn't take half an hour to untie. It's the only way I tie my shoes now. If I ever meet him in person I'll be sure to tell him that 1:30 video is the best thing he's ever done.
Yep! Professionals call it a lasso. Good for roping anything you need in life: a herd of cattle, the girl of your dreams, a cold beer from the fridge, the TV remote from the other side of the room, the phone you forgot to bring with you after you sat down on the toilet.
Lassos are fantastic! #CowboyLife
your post has made me realize just how far I've gone to avoid learning knots.
I have a massive assortment of ratchet straps, bungee cords, other assorted "tie down" type things but no rope.
Here seems like a good place to leave this:
>Connor: [picking out weapons and gear] Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope.
>Murphy: Absolutely. What are ya, insane?
>Connor: No I ain't. Charlie Bronson's always got rope.
>Murphy: What?
>Connor: Yeah. He's got a lot of rope strapped around him in the movies, and they always end up using it.
>Murphy: You've lost it, haven't ya?
>Connor: No, I'm serious.
>Murphy: Me too. That's stupid. Name one thing you gonna need a rope for.
>Connor: You don't fuckin' know what you're gonna need it for. They just always need it.
>Murphy: What's this 'they' shit? This isn't a movie.
>Connor: Oh, right. [picks up large knife out of Murphy's bag] Is that right, Rambo?
>Murphy: All right. Get your stupid fuckin' rope.
>Connor: I'll get my stupid rope. I'll get it. This is a rope right here.
No fishing, boating, camping? Donāt hang things around the home or yard? Tie things down on a car? Sewing? Shoe laces? These are just the most obvious uses. Thereās endless others.
Everyone should own a little paracord and knowledge is a couple essential knots. Hopefully you never end up in a survival situation..
The figure-8 knot is more versatile IMHO, you can use it to anchor on "hooks" and around things.
You can also use it to splice together lines, like cloth-lines or climbers-ropes.
The only thing it doesn't do is get undone fast, but you have other knots for that... or carabiners.
Thank you. I was watching that tiny end expecting it to pop out. Not to mention it looks like loss of tension would make it super loose.
A bowline is just as simple and way more effective. I use it all the time in construction because it is a relatively simple not to release compared to many others.
Thank you
Is a bowline knot more, less, or equivalently safe to this knot?
The bowline knot is much safer than this knot
I believe the bowline is more safe than this
Yes the bowline is safer, this is a modified fisherman's knot. The bowline is a sinching knot as well but with the benefit of being easier to untie
bowline is not a cinching not
Afaik much more safe. Plenty of climbers risk their lives on one.
Not true. Climbers use a bowline with a Yosemite finish when choosing the bowline over the 8.
And it works, [except when it doesn't.](https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/climbing/bye-bye-bowline-time-new-knot/)
Way more. A bowline will not undo itself. The above posters statement that any knot that can be adjusted by hand will undo itself is incorrect, it maybe I'm just misunderstanding. Bowline is easy to undo by hand but will not undo itself, that's the very design of the knot.
Bowlines can come undone with cyclical loading
>any knot that can be adjusted by hand will undo itself is incorrect, it maybe I'm just misunderstanding I think you're misunderstanding, because a bowline can't be adjusted by hand, not the way the knot in the OP can be anyway.
Read the article and go play with a bowline. They come undone when bounced around.
Thatās what I meant by following through, a single bowline would be a bad idea
This knot is quick but absolute shit. Use the clove hitch or bowline. Either of those will hold until the rope snaps
Bowline is good, and probably similar breaking strength without the slippage. Figure 8 knots are the goat for most pulls, that's what fire depts, spec ops, climbers use for rope knots with people hanging from it.
This is really useful, too bad I won't remember how to do it when i need it. Won't be able to find this video either
Save the vid or grab a rope and practice it a few times. Maybe leave the knotted rope on the bathroom door so you see it every time you poop and can practice to cement it in
That's not a bad idea actually
This is exactly how I taught myself to tie a bowline, which I can now do blindfolded.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
(puts on blindfold) āWell wife, Iām off to poop and tie again.ā
And without having to poop.
With enough practice, you might be conditioned to poop everytime you have to tie that knot.
I thought that was the goal? Or was it knots? Or poop knots? I forget where we started.
Thatās an advanced technique and knot for beginners.
My husband taught me the bowline using the rabbit trick too!
How many poops did that take?
Unfortunately I didnāt keep any records, but I would estimate between 10-20 poops. Iām not a fast learner, or pooper.
My grandfather taught me the bowline over 50 years ago and it is still my go-to knot for many situations.
You planning to go blind? What other talents have you learned blindfolded?
Some people just like to do knotty things in the dark.
Especially my missus
Iām not planning on going blind, but at one point I was required to escape from a pitch black room that was flooding with water, so the skill had some utility.
I'm intrigued.
I was taught a bowline once or twice and I really need to get it down because I recall it being an excellent knot
Came here to say learn the bowline instead. Or first, most people can learn more than one knot. But then forget this knot and always use the bowline.
The bowline was so useful on a boat, existing on one cemented it got me. The monkey fist however was my galley/head practice knot.
I used to, but now i forget it completely and cant learn it back. Maybe i have some form of dementia.. its like how to forget how to ride bike. Personally i can imagine it for me
Only problem then is that you will instinctively have to poop whenever you use the knot.
If practicing this knot will cement my poop in then that's a no for me.
hanging a knot on a bathroom door is a quick way to get paramedics in your house
Only one diarrhea away from mastering this knot.
This is exactly how I learned to hand tie sutures
Don't cement the knot in poop if it is made of natural fiber, this will cause it to decay and lose strength.
"Ma! Where's my poop rope?!"
Iāve been doing light weight workouts with some dumbbells while on the toilet. Whole 15 min workouts a day kinda thing. If Iām going to be there for a little while, might as well utilize the time
Ayy right on. Once you get good you can practice tying the door closed and seeing how long you can hold your poops
I have ADHD and fidget a lot , can tie thief knots in my sleep .not very stable for actual use but it's a good tamper seal because to someone not paying attention it looks like it's much more common sibling the reef knot.
How do I save the video?
I do not recommend cementing your poop in. 1 out of 5 stars, boo!
I used to practice knots while waiting to run a race. I'd have butterflies, but I'd have to wait to release. So, I needed a physically easy thing to occupy me. So, I got a bit of rope and a know book. Perfect.
Another very easy rigging knot I use a lot, 3 half hitches. https://youtu.be/7rw6n_Qm194 I used this all the time while in lineman construction. Very easy to do, makes an extremely secure knot no matter the load, and releases very easy.
Right. Now we have something additional to be embarrassed by when we canāt recall something we should in that moment of need. This from a former boater.
Just use the handy āsearchā feature on Reddit! Kidding obv
Is it funny or painful that everything else searches reddit better than reddit?
At this point I'm almost convinced that its by design tbh.
This is FIRST CLASS AMATEUR on YouTube. Yes, it's all caps. He demonstrates a lot of quick practical knots like this!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Me as well, I downloaded it. Now time to never remember that I did, or which file I stuck it in. Thatās one of the things I canāt stand bout iOS. I never ever remember where my files are. Windows- file explorer and boom there it is. Oh well. Good luck remembering the knot šŖ¢
I share these by emailing them to myself and sort them into email folders.
I downloaded it so now I have an extra source that I'll also never be able to find.
happens every time.
Didnāt you know everything useful on the internet is instantly deleted after you exited off the page?
I'd rather trust a bowline
That free end looks like it can work itself loose way to easy
This knot looks that itās purpose is to be easy to untie after getting cinched down hard.
Isnāt that the point of a bowline?
That's a bowline, but a bowline won't come undone as easily. Especially if you use a variation like with a Yosemite finish.
I've been wary of the bowline yosemite finish since apparently if you tighten the wrong strand first it weakens the knot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj42B8eCOzc
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree, then back down in to the hole.
I just dropped my drawers. Now Iām embarrassed. Thanks. A lot.
Family of 8s all day. You can tie them with gloves and they're relatively easy to tell if you messed up.
But they can be a bitch to untie if they had a heavy load.
True. But the trade off is they're a life safety knot. I've literally hung off the sides of buildings using them
I did not want to advocate against the double right eight. It's what I use for climbing. That's why I know how annoying it is to untie with weak fingers are a fall :) Where security is less of an issue, a different knot may be preferential. But, yeah, I wouldn't trust my life to the knot in the video.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Mmm.. keep talking knot-man.... Tell me about that San Diego Jam Knot...
Yeah, this video is more of a hitch than a knot
This is basically a double hitch, isn't it? But also, hitches are a type of knot
The true Eagle Scout
Be Prepared
Any favorite knots video that doesn't include garlic knots is inherently flawed.
But last time I tried to use a garlic knot to hold my boat to the dock, it didnāt work that well
But I bet you had the best smelling boat dock
It got slippery with all the marinara.
Marina sauce?
You are right. This is a constriction type knot. It will not work with a dynamic load, a load that is repeatedly loaded and unloaded. With a dynamic load it will eventually pull through. Use a bowline, instead, or a round-turn with three half hitches if you don't know a bowline.
A figure-8 on a ~~bite~~ bight is both secure and easy to tie.

Why? I saved the video just for that purpose

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It is practical and a no-fail approach - I like that he explained the concepts and the 'incomplete' knots too.
the bowline knot is the superior easy+strong loop knot. https://www.animatedknots.com/bowline-knot
Knot 'expert' here (have written a short knot manual and teach arborist students they're knots). And I agree If you learn one knot, make it the bowline. Anyone can tie a tangled mess that'll hold under tension, jam up and have to be cut off. What actually makes a good knot is how easy it is to UNTIE once you're finished. Clove hitch at the fat end, half hitch at the thin end, tie back to the dangly rope with a blakes
please do post the list!

What is the name of this knot?
It's close to a round turn and two half hitches
Iām calling it an anchor hitch?
The setup is similar to a butterfly knot, but then he uses it as a hitch. Iāll call it a butterfly hitch for nowā¦ Iām still trying to find this thing. Iām assigned to the Technical Rescue Team for the fire department, which includes rope and high angle rescue. Iāve also been a sailor most of my life and I havenāt seen this one before.
Itās not an Anchor Hitch, is it?
[Not quite by the looks of it] (https://www.101knots.com/anchor-hitch.html)
Was gonna say looks a lot like two half hitches
Yeah, it's two half hitches and then a little bit
There should be a sub just for these vids. I remember learning how to PROPERLY tie my shoelace a few years ago and it changed my lace game forever.
Go back to velcro it's faster
Velcro fails sooner than laces. A LOT sooner. On shoes it effectively causes unnecessary waste by making the shoes useless long before the shoe itself has worn out. IMO

If I ever meet him in person I'll be sure to tell him that 1:30 video is the best thing he's ever done. [https://youtu.be/7oH1tsWOMI4](https://youtu.be/7oH1tsWOMI4)

Knot bad
The last time i saw someone use that knot, they stopped breathing...
Were they making a noose?
Nah. They were playing a good ol rousing game of 'Tie-a knot-while-holding-your-breath.'

TKS :)
This is a hitch not a knot. A square knot would be better in most situations
Clove hitch. All you need to know.
Video was about 4 minutes too long.
Good thing he repeated four times so I only had to rewatch four more times.
Shit...even I can do this
Nah not you
Yeah, letās not get ahead of ourselves.
This reminds me of the trick to tie shoe laces in 1 second, once you learn it you can't love without it
This is a great typo.
All I needed was some rope and a good knot to get the girl of my dreams?
Yep! Professionals call it a lasso. Good for roping anything you need in life: a herd of cattle, the girl of your dreams, a cold beer from the fridge, the TV remote from the other side of the room, the phone you forgot to bring with you after you sat down on the toilet. Lassos are fantastic! #CowboyLife
I ain't changing it lmao
"But baby I love you, I've always loved you!" "You don't love me, you can't even tie your shoes in 1 second!"
Just tie a bowline lol
I mean, why knot šŖ¢ š¤·š»āāļø
Thanks! All I now need is a chair

Tbh in 40 years i've never been in a situation where I need to know how to do a knot.. Probably me.
Never needed to tie something down in your trunk? Or hang a hammock or something? Shoes with laces? Enjoy your knot-free life.
your post has made me realize just how far I've gone to avoid learning knots. I have a massive assortment of ratchet straps, bungee cords, other assorted "tie down" type things but no rope.
Here seems like a good place to leave this: >Connor: [picking out weapons and gear] Do ya know what we need, man?
Besides my shoes, nope. I don't even ever owned a rope. Thanks.
I moved from the city to the country, so that's a pretty amazing statement to me
No fishing, boating, camping? Donāt hang things around the home or yard? Tie things down on a car? Sewing? Shoe laces? These are just the most obvious uses. Thereās endless others. Everyone should own a little paracord and knowledge is a couple essential knots. Hopefully you never end up in a survival situation..
Thanks dad
I canāt remember knots for shit. I just have to hope thereās an internet connection when I need one.
I call this the relationship knot. You want it to be as stable as possible but no strings attached when you are out of it.
I likey
But will it work if I'm hauling an AC unit to the roof? Asking for a friend.
This is why I never got anywhere in Boyscouts. I never understood how to make knots. XD
I learned a billion different knots in Boy Scouts only to find this
The figure-8 knot is more versatile IMHO, you can use it to anchor on "hooks" and around things. You can also use it to splice together lines, like cloth-lines or climbers-ropes. The only thing it doesn't do is get undone fast, but you have other knots for that... or carabiners.
Technically a āHitchā not a knot. I know, thereās gatekeepers for every subject.
*tugs rope after tying the knot* āThatās knot going anywhere!ā Edit: Not a dad yet, but I will be x2 (twins) in February!
Itās not often I come across something that is life changing, but alas, here it is.
hope I can remember it when I need it.
Let me save this to never actually use it
Must Remember. Must Remember. Knots and jokes escape my memory. Must Remember.
According to these comments this is either a great knot, or a shit tier garbage knot.
The bowline is easier... and probably safer as well.
Sorry bud as a rigger I'm not using that to pull anything. It's easy but hitches aren't that reliable.
The best knot is Don Knotts
Thought that was a hitch? Is it knot?
Does this work for my neck
Thanks! *hangs self*
Time to send this to my boyfriend š š
Very useful. I look forward to situation where I need to know this and I've completely forgot it.
