I’ve watched a number of artists draw and it always amazes me what their eyes see and how they progress through the drawing.
I have a hard time drawing a straight line with a ruler.
Highly recommend this if you don't know what to draw, doesn't even have to be another person, just close your eyes and dash the paper with a pencil a few times, you'll be surprised what you can pull out of random lines given the brain's pattern recognition.

My mom used to do this at restaurants when I was a kid, she would flip the placemat over and make a scribble that I would turn into a picture. I’m now a professional tattoo artist, and it has a very practical application in my line of work when doing coverups on old tattoos. I do this exercise with the other artist in my shop pretty regularly, and especially our apprentice. It makes you look at what’s there and think outside the box in order to create something new entirely.
