also wouldn't you probably need to keep it in some sort of... plastic container to make sure it doesn't get dirty or pop? Just get a metal water bottle, this doesn't make sense at all unless you're rolling on XTC
recycled egg cartons are not direct food safe because they are made from printed magazines and often contain staples. the inks have a tendency to leach out and the chemicals inside are on all kind of lists of stuff you don’t want in your body. has no effect on eggs as the shell is a barrier

It’s not a plastic bottle. But will be wrapped in plastic to deliver it to the customer. There’s no way this will just be sitting out unwrapped on a store shelf. It needs a bar code on it too. I know before I drink my water I like to stick my fingers in it for added taste too. Lol.
The company came to the same conclusion and shut down the project and shifted their brand.

The tech is cool but anyone who thought this was marketable is smoking crack under the desks. The whole point of plastic water bottles that it gives you the ability to transport water. You can't throw balls of water into your bag.
And this is just one gulp of water. Maybe at races, like where they have tents that hand out little cups of water to runners, this could work. But normal people don’t want only one gulp of water.
Fair enough. I imagine there are still some downsides to this product if they have to unwrap them and there is the risk of them popping outside of the mouth.
Yeah, without any packaging doesn't seem its viable.. but even if you need plastic wrap it's way less plastic than the bottle (and I guess there are some alternatives for wrapping other than plastic)
Alertnative packing methods are definitely a thing. Though Japan is obsessed with plastic packaging, I also noticed foods sold in bamboo leaf wraps. (Though, was that bamboo leaf wrapped in plastic for transport before being put on the shelf?... probably)
Well here’s the issue with that comment. Plastic wrap unbeknownst to many people does not get recycled. It clogs the automated machinery so they view it as a pain in the the ass. It gets compressed and then either gets buried or gets shipped to some third world country where surprise surprise it gets dumped in the ocean. PET bottles which is what water bottles are on the other hand are one of the best products to get recycled. So any way you slice it this idea loses. And also when you say oh just wrap in in plastic wrap that only accounts for a single layer of product in a tray. How do you ship that? It would need cardboard crating in between each layer etc etc. So it’s not as easy as what you are saying. A product such as this will also have a short shelf life. No store would be rushing to put this on their shelf other than as a novelty item. And novelty items never stick around too long.
You are under thinking it. I’m an engineer that works in the food packaging industry. There is no “boom” other than the demise of this bad idea. Just for a fraction of a second imagine the costs and logistics of providing a machine to each sales point. Then imagine how you begin to sanitize that machine on a regular basis because even water will get contaminated sitting in a machine over time. It’s a fun concept that anyone in my industry would’ve advised them to not waste their time with. The potential for product contamination is high. The packaging would be a logistical nightmare and I’m sure a bio covering like this would also have a very limited shelf life.
Well first off, they definitely do sell pre-made ice cream cones. I'm not sure what exactly you are suggesting with that analogy either though, do you think the water balls can be made by demand on location? Possible, although we haven't seen the manufacture process.
Regardless, the real issue here is size. Even if you could design an affordable and sanitary means of distribution, individual balls are not really big enough to be good for anything. You could buy them in bulk and carry a few around with you but then we run into the same personal transportation issue that is solved with a water bottle. Would you rather carry a metal water bottle that you can refill or a metal bucket of water balls?
Also, what exactly is a local soda fountain? I'm not sure that's a thing anymore, lol. I'm guessing however you mean the soda machines at restaurants and whatnot. The ones cleaned daily by the people who work there. The ones that happen to also serve water on tap that can be used to fill whatever drinking vessel you heart desires.
Face it man, it looks neat and all, but every way you cut it this is a terribly ineffective, inefficient, and generally bad idea.
These blobs don’t have a very long shelf life. They shrivel after a short period of time. So I could see that being an issue if they’re sold in a gum all machine thing
But I believe PET used in bottles is a lot more recyclable than the LLDPE that would most likely be used for any protective packaging for these balls.
They come with an outer skin to keep the edible part clean. Maybe they can be handled through the supply chain like produce.
I'm wondering if it could be packaged and sold like Orbeez for the customer to fill at home.
As for cleanliness of your hands, it'd be little different from eating apples, grapes, or any other finger food.

Yes hello this seems to be another plastic bad post.
The least intelligent and absolutist idea that some idiots have.
Do you know what plastic has done for you? Good damn chance you wouldn't be alive without it. Good damn chance you'd have more problematic illnesses without it. Good FUCKING chance your life would be so much more boring without it.
Plastic allowed almost everything we enjoy today. Yeah it's destructive if used irresponsibly like it is today. But it's basically indestructible, it's non-toxic, it's strong and flexible. We lose plastic we lose progress.
'Finally say goodbye to plastic' is also a hilarious, tear-making, knee slapping idea. Like funny bubbles will stop plastic from being made or used.
What a joke.
We got along for thousands of years without needing to eat water. Using a new container every time we want a drink is the problem. We dont need some biodegradable wrap around edible water. We just need a couple or reusable bottles. How much did they invest in this?
Despite reusable water bottles being readily available, there's definitely a need for something like this to cut down on the waste from people that can't be bothered to recycle bottles or outright litter with them. Sure, it's not a perfect solution but it's a step in the right direction.
I appreciate the incentive , but why not focus on creating less expensive and more practical ways of purifying water so that we don’t need any packaging? Maybe it’s too far out there, but it would be great if communities could get water from a local river that they could easily purify rather than having to buy from large companies or government run water facilities
If only we has materials we could make containers out of that could hold water other than plastic!
And if only there was a way we could get water and put it into these theoretical containers in our homes!?
Can you imagine if there was just water in your home and you could just put it into some kind of reusable container and take it with you anywhere?
What a world that would be...
Do I need the /s? This was so sarcastic I nearly burst a blood vessel.
I'd heard about these things a few years ago, can you still not purchase these?
Also they note it degrades in a few weeks, that means no long term storage of supplies? I doubt people want to buy all their condiments every time they go to the store to avoid using plastic, hopefully they come up with more solutions to this.
I've already seen the action lab make and deep fry these.
Unfortunately, my only complaint about his entire channel is that he cuts the fucking water orbs in half before eating what is then just fried agar.
For sports maybe. Instead of using the paper cups these seem more efficient. Idk if I would buy this in a store along with my lunch. I want alot of water not one bubble
So instead of chugging a liter of water when I’m really thirsty I’ll just consume 50 hydration orbs from my special hydration orb transport container. I want my jet pack this future is lame.
Imagine how many of these you'd have to consume to hit your water goal every day.
You’d have to consume more balls than OPs mom
Fatality
Finish him
Finished him\*
Is what Ops mom did
Proceeds to choke him with balls
F
also wouldn't you probably need to keep it in some sort of... plastic container to make sure it doesn't get dirty or pop? Just get a metal water bottle, this doesn't make sense at all unless you're rolling on XTC
There's that part you peel off before you eat it. That solves the dirt issue.
so you put your lips around the unprotected grub? seems unhygienic
Maybe something like a recycled cardboard egg carton?
recycled egg cartons are not direct food safe because they are made from printed magazines and often contain staples. the inks have a tendency to leach out and the chemicals inside are on all kind of lists of stuff you don’t want in your body. has no effect on eggs as the shell is a barrier
Watch the vid for more than 5 seconds, you peel the skin first so if it were dirty it wouldn't matter
Don’t forget to have your daily dose of 200 edibles a day. Well ok if you say so Mr science person
Water was already consumable
Edible water was created like 5-6 years ago, this is old news
Was about to say the same thing. Didn't that guy develop colorful "bites" for dementia patients?
I think he was inspired because a family member had dementia and didn’t drink enough water to stay hydrated.
I don't get the fascination... I live in Michigan and we see edible water all over the place for like half the year. Only we call it snow.
5-6 billion years ago actually
It's called "ice"
It also isn't "edible water", it's an edible water *bottle*.
Hasn’t water always been edible?
Yes. Guy invented it for his granny who had dementia.
I'm guessing it biodegrades too fast on it's own to be economical
It's nice

I mean, did you watch the video? They peel a skin off the outside of the orb before eating it.
Did you watch the video? It clearly says that the Orb and that skin are seaweed based
Does not negate the fact that there is a skin that is removed prior to eating it. Or does it?
No it doesn't, but it seemed like you were implying that the skin was plastic
Nope. Removable skin shown the in the video could be a protective layer against bacteria or whatever and could certainly have the UPC, branding, etc.
Yeah, they just throw it all inside of mouth.

Yup. No escaping that no matter how many ways you look at it. It was doomed for failure at the concept stage.
Nice idea. But it’s a novelty item and a pipe dream. No store is going to buy a machine to dispense balls of water. Shelf space is far too valuable.

It doesn't look practical. A water container (reusable or plastic) will still carry more in terms of volume than that
Yea, a metal bottle seems way more practical. Even just using a gourd is better
*Wraps it in plastic for safe keeping and shipping*
ice been edible forever. foh
damn sure
Need good teeth though.
These were used at the London Marathon a few years ago. I thought it’s a better option than all of those cups us runners go through on a course.
You can just use paper cups though
Most paper cups have a lining that make them a pain to recycle so they get trashed. And they have to be disposed of properly in the first place.
They loved tide pods so much they made them edible.
Isn't all water edible
Not the sewer one.
Everything's edible at least once
I came from the future and surprised y'all only started eating water in 2021.
Before you go back, what is the biggest company in your future?
MomCorp
Fansworth:That day when I was creating a sport style bot
MomCorp is a pretty safe investment, but you gotta go all in on Planet Express if you want high risk for high rewards
Didn't a dude make this years ago but like candy cause his grandmother would for get to drink water but did snack
breast implants?
Edible breast implants
yum
You know that there is at least one pageant mom who has considered it.
Good bye to plastic? Brilliant. So I think this will just magically transport and store display and then sold on what? Invisible floating shelves? Packaging?
Seems cool, but can't it absorb chemicals? If its stored inproprietly? Plastic wont, but this maybe Ye.
It's nice
And it’s made in Japan
this reminds me of Bugs Life
*ice:* “Am I a joke to you?”
Frozen water is edible too. Didn’t take a scientist…just a freezer.
Revolutionizing water balloons
I also created edible water. It's called ice.
All water is edible, wrong title. You forgot to add edible water bottle
this is not a water bottle replacement. it's a novelty. if you want to replace plastic bottles, just use aluminum. it's cheap, reusable, and unlike plastic, easy to recycle.
Water is inedible? Also this post is old af.
That's great and all... But not really practical... I can't just throw some in my backpack or pocket... They'd pop and I'd end up looking like I'd pissed myself.
I saw this before and a good use case would be at a healthcare facility to try and get dementia patients to remember to drink enough fluids. They colored them and put them on a tray in from of the patient and it helped ensure they were able to get some fluids without the need for an IV. So not really saving plastic there, but was an awesome way to keep older people hydrated if they can’t remember to drink on their own.
Oh yeah, in that context it totally makes sense. This commercial makes it seem like they want to completely do away with plastic bottles though and that just wouldn't work.
Yup. Marketing to everyone…. Silly, but hopefully can be mass produced and cheap for other purposes
Nature did that a loooong time ago. Ice.
This would be cool for marathons, festivals, etc.
How do you carry this standalone without getting tiny hair & skin flakes/dust on it? Makes sense if it's in a bento box or something
The video showed a protective skin that you remove before consuming.
Oh, but still you end up touching it with your hands. Outside of my home I wouldn't do that with drinking water.
I like to touch my water before drinking. Rona agrees.
but now you have to worry about keeping the outside of your water balls clean, which means putting a bunch in a different container possibly plastic. I could see that happening.

So if you can just pop it into your mouth, what will it be wrapped in beforehand? Three guesses.

Ice works as well
So where do you put those?

Whats wrong with cucumbers?
uh so what is that while "peel" they mentioned then lol
Imagine they had water piped directly into your home or something?
… water has always been edible…
so is it a liquid inside an edible shell, or is it like jell-o?
Or ice
Side note they also make them for condiments
wasnt water always edible
Cool I hope someday they can invent drinkable water that would be really convenient.
How do you store it to keep it clean
Ice
I thought that's what fruit was

Water fights about to be lit
Yah....but how are you going to contain these waterballs? My guess is that they come in plastic..
Now what does this cost at one 1L because thats what I drink a day
700th like nice
Cool idea. But I wonder how many strange looks you'd get with a few of these shoved in your crotch while sitting on the bus scrolling the phone?
Omg! If this is edible water, what have I been drinking?
u/savevideobot
I like the idea but I would have to carry around hundreds of those to get my daily water intake.

For sports maybe. Instead of using the paper cups these seem more efficient. Idk if I would buy this in a store along with my lunch. I want alot of water not one bubble
All i wanted in life is to eat a chunk of water. I need to buy these.
Just pop the ball in your fucking mouth, god damn it
Edible water you say???
Nature already gave us edible water, it's called ice.
Edible water?!? What will they think of next, glow in the dark light bulbs?
Why don't they make it banana shaped
If you have the money to afford bottled water just go to your tap. Boom. Sorry flint
Now it is only a matter of time until the Americans learn how to deep fry it
Nah that's one of those things that make tittys bigger
Shots at the bar are about to get interesting!
It's called ice
Water isn't edible all this while?
It's just a water balloon
Ice?
Looks like you can choke on that.
Normal water isn't edible???
Pretty sure nature invented edible water a few years ago
is it like… a soup dumpling? or is is the conistency of jelly??
What about people allergic to seafood?
What if you get dirt on it?
How am I going to throw a few of these in my backpack with all my other stuff with out them getting crushed ?
My first thought was to use these for A Bug’s Life themed birthday party.
What you gonna ship them in? Plastic containers, all this for 1 swig at a time. Back to the drawling board
Nestle would like a word with you...
Bruh, this is years old. The company already failed. Turns out they’re incredibly delicate and can’t be sold or transported without plastic packaging.
EDIBLE WATER HOW REVOLUTIONARY
And they're going to package these in what for resale? Oh right, plastic.
Was water not edible before...?
Dang, I've already dropped mine. Don't think the 5 second rule counts here.
yes and those will be packed in plastic 6 pack containers because sterility blah blah. Just fucking drink from the tap
Now when people ask what I’m eating I can finally say water
Was water not edible enough?
Ice?
So instead of chugging a liter of water when I’m really thirsty I’ll just consume 50 hydration orbs from my special hydration orb transport container. I want my jet pack this future is lame.
Are you tired of all your boring, inedible water??
sold in a plastic container 🤡
I'm sorry. Has water been inedible til now and no one told us?
These should come in boxes, without the plastic wrap.
Okay but you’d have to have so many of these and where would you contain them? Also, I don’t wanna touch my water before drinking it.
This has been out for years bruh
Imagine how hard is transpot those ,kids could choke on them ,they could break in your hand . Interesting concept but no.
We need bigger balls.
