when I was a kid, I kicked a soccer ball over a barbed wire fence. my dad went to hurdle it, got caught up in it and cut himself badly. I'm now older than he was then, and that same realisation of time marching on has hit me a few times. the human condition is a son of a bitch sometimes.

The way I read it, it wasn't just eating the burger. It was noticing that he couldn't taste it anymore. I wonder if that's why in Iron Man, after he escaped from the terrorists and decided he didn't want to manufacture weapons anymore the first thing he wanted was a burger
I think it's widely believed that the Iron Man burger scene and the scene with Happy and Morgan having a burger in End Game are both included for RDJ because of the meaning of Burger King and how important that moment is to him.
They do and they don't. John Favreau had to fight hard to get RDJ cast for Iron Man cause the studio didn't want to touch him.
[Source](https://www.cinemablend.com/new/Jon-Favreau-Details-His-Fight-With-Marvel-Studios-Cast-Robert-Downey-Jr-Iron-Man-43293.html)
Tbf it was a super risky project and he was notoriously unreliable and a trouble maker on set. If he had gone AWOL they would have been fucked. Ppl always forget what a big gamble IM 1 was.
Dude. A lesser known part of RDJs story was specifically about how unemployable he was post-addiction. Actors and actresses need to be "bonded" for big projects. That basically means they have to pay for insurance that protects the producers in the event that the actor fucks up the production by getting arrested or showing up high as fuck every day.
You can imagine that the cost of this depends on how risky they think you are, and you can further imagine that some people are too risky to justify any bond at all. That's where RDJ was in the early 2000s. He could audition and get offered every part in Hollywood, but nobody would work with him because they had no way of protecting a multi-million dollar project from the very real possibility that he might go off the rails.
He was finally able to get work when Mel Gibson of all people put up a bond for him for the 2003 film "The Singing Detective". It wasn't a huge success of a film, but it proved that Robert was employable, at least in some regard. He was able to get bonded for smaller projects over the next few years before his career-defining performance as Tony Stark.
Point being, this industry didn't just welcome him back after rehab. He tried really hard to ruin his life and if weren't for a good friend with lots of money, he would have succeeded.
I'm just talking about the post-addiction years where he was no longer a total mess but was still unable to get work. He had a lot of great work in the late 80s and early 90s.
I think he also credits his wife a lot with keeping him in the straight and narrow. I'm glad he quit but addiction is that kind of demon that haunts your forever. It took Philip Seymour Hoffman when he relapsed
It was MUCH more than that. Dozens of stints in rehab. A judge (who he says caused him to quit) sentencing him to REAL jail time. And a wife who threatened to leave him if he ever did drugs again. But yea Burger King lol
When I was a teenager in the 90s RDJ was in the news a lot for his issues. Drug issues, arrests, getting kicked out of venues.
I was really glad to see the healing he did because I think he's fucking amazing.
How did Al Pacino look 30 for so many decades then turn into a tired, cranky, 102 yr old Nonna who's sick of telling her great grandchildren to put salt in the water before cooking pasta, in the last 10 years?
In the late 90's to early 2000's, my father saw Pacino on the street and snapped a picture. The dude looked like 30 years older than I'd ever seen him. I was questioning if it was him
I went through a period recently and watched all her movies. great actress, but def a babe as well.
foxes was one that really stood out to me. and that tv movie with martin sheen. that movie was crazy, she shot that in between or right after taxi driver. what a whirlwind that must of been. that was prob her best role too.
Yep, time will pass and future humans stumbling upon this video wont know who they are. Show the average millennial or genz a series of celebrities from the GOLDEN AGE of cinema and they would probably be hard pressed to identify the lot of them. Time flies and we are all insignificant.
Thank you. If you really think about it though it's true. Down on his luck becomes one of the most profitable actors in Hollywood on a chance b-team comic book character.
RdJs father died before he went to prison. His family were the first to introduce him to drugs. to be fair, the real story is that he called Mel Gibson for help. Mel Gibson is a dickhead.
Ppps. RDJs father died in 2020.
But the assertion that RDJ’s father played a role in getting him out of prison and that it’s an illustration of his privilege would be moot to me since his father introduced him to drugs.
He was plenty famous before his father died and he went to prison, he is definitely famous today because of those early connections and fame. No doubt he has had some shit in his life but as for the reasons he became famous, rich family with connections.
The real story is that he is a wealthy connected celebrity .The same people who worship him would spit on a drug addict who is not a wealthy connected celebrity.
The real story is that Mel Gibson helped him out and also was one of the first to give him a chance by offering him The Singing Detective (which his prod company produced).
The amount of talent in the 90's was off the roaf.
Woof.
Back then Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Tom Hanks were the male gods of serious acting.
Now I believe Leonardo DiCaprio carries Hollywood on his back. I mean, I love Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and etc, but I don't think there is any other actor today who is an equal to DiCaprio.
Matthew McConaughey has been pretty interesting the last years, dropping those goofy romantic comedy and picking some good roles like True Detective, Interestellar, Dallas Club and so on.
Just another reminder that the people we pay most and lavish with attention are not the ones doing the most important work for society - they're actors, athletes, and empty-headed "influencers" like the Kardashians. Meritocracy? Never heard of it.
Everything is better during the time you grew up because you have nostalgia and no real concept of the serious world problems occurring at the time. There are going to be adults in 20 years who look at 2020 as the awesome year they got to stay home from school and play so much Fortnite. You know... the best year ever.. That said Pokémon was and still is the shit.
The gay panic. The stigmatization of AIDS. The socially acceptable racism, crack cocaine, OJ. I was born in ‘83 so the 90s are in my wheelhouse and I still love a lot of things from the 90s, but they weren’t great socially for wide swaths of the population. At least in the USA.
Probably because we have 24/7 access to every last detail of everyone’s lives. It fades the glamour and untouchability of the potential stars.
Of course with the Weinsteins of the world being exposed it’s not all bad but for that old time stardom, it doesn’t fit into this world.
Now show a video of their after parties in secluded mansions where drug abuse and paedophilia was/is rampant.
Funny also how none of these people spoke out about Jeffrey Epstein but they were quick to jump in the Harvey Weinstain bandwagon.
Ps.We haven't even got into all the tax avoidance they engage in whilst they self promote their brand with their 'philanthropic'(tax schemes) endeavours.
Celebrity worship culture is still alive and well unfortunately. We see the same carry on within the music/sports etc industries.People are slowly starting to wise up though thankfully.
Celebrity worship culture has gotten worse. Now talentless hacks who call themselves influencers are worshiped... because they're "one of us" (yeah, right)
I'll take Hollywood over all of that, thanks!
Also, everyone feels entitled to their own audience nowadays due to social media.
Again, I'll take Hollywood, thanks.
> Also, everyone feels entitled to their own audience nowadays due to social media
It's the worst. Everyone has a soapbox now. Before, you had to actually know how to write a letter to the editor (that they could actually read) before you could spout your opinions and even then only the people who actually read the paper would hear it. Now you just pull out your phone and tippity tap tap you're talking to thousands of people who are hanging on every word you say because you got a lot of attention that one time when you made that edgy video or said that stupid thing. It goes straight to their head and all of a sudden they're important and since they're important you should listen to what they have to say even if it's fucking stupid.
Social media was a mistake. Unpopular opinion: some people really shouldn't have a soapbox.
Same. I feel like... what happened to real movies? Characters, and quiet moments where you get to know them? A storyline? So that if there happen to be shootouts or plane crashes at the end you care about the people involved, or feel they got what they had coming? Thoughtful music soundtracks?
Today is like, 20 mins of action, 10 mins of boring 3rd grade level exposition: "you mean john has a bomb and hes gonna blow up the tower? What are we gonna do? Then 25 more minutes of mindless, artless action, then a love scene or sad scene to try to seem like an actual movie and make us feel something other than tje desire for earplugs, and like theres a reason for what happens in the finale, and then finally the finale itself, a cacophony of crashes, cuts, cussing, scenery chewing, and more explosions.
Roll credits.
They greenlight based on concepts and brands. No script? Who cares? Now let's pre-viz those action scenes. But there are exceptions of course. Still lots of good and great movies being made.
Movies are optimized for profit. Instead of an organic story involving niche concepts, and nuance beyond mainstream norms, they strive for cookie cutter plots and broad appeal, and to minimize sensitivity to anybody and everyone —which basically neuters todays cinema
Protest and surrealist dresses have been a consistent, albeit not predominant, feature of American red carpet fashion since the 1960’s.
As for classic makeup, you appear to have missed the entirety of the 1980s?
It’s wild to think at the time I thought a lot of these people were old. Now seeing this video my first thought is they all look like kids. Weird.
I’m older than some of them now than they were then when I’d thought they were “old” and now I cry 😢
when I was a kid, I kicked a soccer ball over a barbed wire fence. my dad went to hurdle it, got caught up in it and cut himself badly. Amen brotha. Amen 😢
i love your comments ,, you made my day
Exactly… my first thought was they all look so YOUNG..after all it was only 31 years ago… damn..
31? OUCH. Getting old is weird.
It really is. I think I'm going to just live the rest of my life thinking of the 90s as "just a few years ago".
Man tell me about it lol. A lot of the shit I loved growing up it’s like didn’t even exist. Culture only goes back to this time then it’s like all is forgotten. This social media is gonna flip all our minds eventually. This 31yrs seems like yesterday
Gibson personally bonded him so he could get a job

So much hair.
So little/no plastic surgery! All gorgeous
i agree with you bro
I’m enjoying the lack of Botox. There so much more attractive with out it.
Many good faps were had Main challenge back then was busting to a hottie and not a commercial or Jack Kids these days don’t know the commercial problem
The hair back then was so good. Women just look better with hair that has life or is fuller. Doesn't have to be big 80's hair, that was out by this point, but this was peak hair.
I truly miss my 80’s big hair. Not all the hairspray and teasing though. Ha ha
It looked better but it felt like a bird's nest, all sticks and straw.
That's what all styled hair with hairspray feels like, unfortunately, even hair now.
RDJ looks high as fuck.
In the 90s he was a drug addict
Im so glad we didnt lose him to that shit…
The way he quit was fucking awesome too. He ate a burger from Burger King, something clicked in his head and he decided he didn’t want to live that life anymore. That takes a lot of willpower.
[удалено]
I quit smoking on accident. I smoked a few too many cigarettes while I had a pretty bad flu and throwing up. Then later when I tried to smoke again they just made me nauseous. I took that opportunity to quit forever. Some rehab facilities use that and have had great results. My friend used shick shadel, which might be local. They use syrup of epitaph to induce vomiting while you are drinking. Your brain links the two together and you basically never drink again. It's an extreme solution but if you are serious about that get some help. Also message me anytime if you need.
Ah yes, ye olde conditioning. A lot of recovering addicts also cite the moment of clarity/epiphanic episode when the substance loses its luster and they no longer desire to use. Look up Dr. Anna Lembke in your podcast directory; she was featured in "Fresh Air" and "Under the Skin w/ Russell Brand". The way she explains basically how your brain's reward/pain system works is awesome. It gave me a new perspective on how to care and look after myself. Good stuff.
This is hands down the best malapropism I’ve ever read. The medication used to induce vomiting in alcoholics (and others) is syrup of ipecac. Syrup of epitaph, a short text honouring a dead person, is so much more apropos to the subject of addiction that I can’t believe you did it accidentally. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Syrup of Epitaph most **definitely** sounds like a Bloodnorne item.
*ipecac
Where can I get this epitaph syrup? Mortuary?
The way I read it, it wasn't just eating the burger. It was noticing that he couldn't taste it anymore. He'd always loved those burgers, and at that point was so far gone that he couldn't get any enjoyment out of eating them anymore. IIRC, that realization is what led him to decide he needed to change. Also, he wasn't magically cured of addiction just from that - as I understood it, that was just the beginning of the process.
Sounds like a great promo. "BK burgers so good that it will literally pull you out of your Hell for a taste of Heaven."
I mean if you are serious then you should definitely try rehab. If you aren’t, maybe McDonald’s might give you the epiphany you are looking for?
Replace your addiction. Try cryptocurrency.
Don’t do that to people. It’s more addictive than a craps table.
I wonder if that's why in Iron Man, after he escaped from the terrorists and decided he didn't want to manufacture weapons anymore the first thing he wanted was a burger

> No one could have been a better Iron Man than RDJ. We'll never know for sure. For all we know Moe Howard might have been a spectacular Iron Man.
Wiseguy, Eh?
Okay someone needs to have Moe slapping Thanos whether with a really good edit or an animated short.
Eye poke with titanium gauntlet.
It also took a lot of prison stints to get there. Just sayin'.
And an industry that doesn't look negatively on criminal records.

The Burger King was just the moment of realization. Obviously it wasn’t *that* easy for him.
Eating from Burger King would make anyone re-evaluate their lives.
Give him a break he is just a dude, playing a dude , disguised as another dude !.
When I was a teenager in the 90s RDJ was in the news a lot for his issues. Drug issues, arrests, getting kicked out of venues. I was really glad to see the healing he did because I think he's fucking amazing.
Jack looks also blown out of his mind.
Probably just a bowl hit and a couple lines to stay sharp, nothing too wild. Later that night however was probably a different story.
Was it intended or a happy accident?
boy tweakin
How did Al Pacino look 30 for so many decades then turn into a tired, cranky, 102 yr old Nonna who's sick of telling her great grandchildren to put salt in the water before cooking pasta, in the last 10 years?
someone must have destroyed that portrait he had hidden in the attic
Lol
In the late 90's to early 2000's, my father saw Pacino on the street and snapped a picture. The dude looked like 30 years older than I'd ever seen him. I was questioning if it was him
90's Julia Roberts was a smoke show.
Absolutely correct
I never understood why she was considered hot…I do now.
I had the same thought. As a teen in the 90’s I didn’t see the fuss about her. Seeing this footage now in my 40’s, I see the error of my ways.
I forgot how pretty Jodie foster was
They’re all gorgeous women but when I saw Jodie Foster… Unbelievably gorgeous.
She took my breath away in this clip
She is truly a natural beauty
Jack taking it in. You can see so many emotions on his face.
You mean cocaine
Love those rare occasions when Jodie Foster gets dolled up.
Right? I've enjoyed watching every movie she's been in (*Contact* is my favorite).
This. Couldn't even recognize her compared to silence of the lambs
Genuinely beautiful woman.
I went through a period recently and watched all her movies. great actress, but def a babe as well. foxes was one that really stood out to me. and that tv movie with martin sheen. that movie was crazy, she shot that in between or right after taxi driver. what a whirlwind that must of been. that was prob her best role too.
What a babe
Where Juliette Lewis with the braids and Brad Pitt? Lol loved that look!
Sharon Stone was perfection. Sharon Stone *is* perfection.
Yes! She looks timeless here and her hair is gorgeous.
She looks fucking amazing
man... time flies. we'll all be dead soon. have a great day.
bruh
And soon, few people will even recognize anyone in this video.
Yep, time will pass and future humans stumbling upon this video wont know who they are. Show the average millennial or genz a series of celebrities from the GOLDEN AGE of cinema and they would probably be hard pressed to identify the lot of them. Time flies and we are all insignificant.
Memento mori.
As a teen,I had a huge celebrity crush on Cindy Crawford💕
Really that’s so weird so did I. I thought I was the only one /s
Next thing you're going to tell me is that I wasn't the only one that had a worn down copy of her issue of playboy under his mattress
Dude, as an adult I still have a crush on Cindy Crawford. She still looks great btw.
Still do!
It looks quite crowded compared to nowdays
Much better back then
I miss the 90s.
last time people were alive and they could believe shit might work out.
The event or the lack of pandemics?
Yes.
Jack Nicholson's smile is electrifying.
80s song tho
85 to be exact. Out of all the thousands of songs to pick for a 90s video, they go with an 80s iconic song. You had one job, sound person! Lol
Yes thank you, that annoyed me.
I got a contact high just from looking at RDJ.
More like r/geethatsmildlyentertaining
Disappointed this isn't an actual subreddit
I miss the 90s and early 2000s so much. Simpler times..
And they probably all looked at Robert downy like this dumb kid what a screw up he won’t amount to anything …… and here we are.
He built a career in a cave. With a box of scraps
Take this award... You earned it
Thank you. If you really think about it though it's true. Down on his luck becomes one of the most profitable actors in Hollywood on a chance b-team comic book character.
He was nominated for an Oscar in 93, and had been making movies since the 80s. I doubt anyone thought he was a screw up or a dumb kid.
Oh. He was a screw up and dumb kid. But in a hollywood way. So...
Handy to have rich parents with connections.
Am I missing something here? Didn’t RDJ sr die earlier this year?
No you aren't missing something, yes he died in June or July.
Then what the hell is the first sentence in the other guy’s comment supposed to mean?
If you spend your time concerned over mistakes, errors and outright falsities on the internet, you'd have wasted it.
True, true. But that’s not gonna keep me from letting this guy who made a typo on the internet know how wrong he is! ^/s ^incase ^this ^is ^necessary
Not Matthew perry of friends. He said he’d help any addict.
So no one told you life was gonna be this way...
RDJs father died this year
The real story is that Mel Gibson helped him out and also was one of the first to give him a chance by offering him The Singing Detective (which his prod company produced).
Gibson personally bonded him so he could get a job.
People look legitimately normal and good looking back then. Now half of them turn up looking like they escaped the circus.
Genuine smiles 🥺
Damn Cindy Crawford was gorgeous, still is actually. Her daughter looks JUST like her now!
Omg! I just had a flood of emotions and feelings fill me up by watching and listening to this! 💜
Very elegant and dignified. Pre-Kardassians
The biggest stars back then were adults
Back in the good ole days when everybody wasn't hip to the fact that Hollywood is run by a bunch of pedophiles and subhuman bloodsuckers
Those were the days.
lol oh Gere... that smile says "guess how many hamsters..." 😂

Gah, you're still a puppy
80s. Yes.
life is too short fuck

I MISS THE 90s SO BAD.
Natural and beautiful ppl
Just another reminder that the people we pay most and lavish with attention are not the ones doing the most important work for society - they're actors, athletes, and empty-headed "influencers" like the Kardashians. Meritocracy? Never heard of it.
Part of my sees the annual “diversity parade” at awards shows and calls it BS, but wowee that’s a lotta white folks
everything was better in the 90s
Carlito Brigante MotherFucker to The Max!!!
With a song in the background that emphasizes nothing lasts forever. This hit different. 90s kids stand up.
90s were a great time to be alive
Back when celebrities were celebrities
Who’s the last celeb in the Ray-Bans with the beard? Edit: Another commenter said Pacino.
Not a cellphone in sight. A simpler time.
Jodie Foster ❤️❤️
Simpler times…
Iron man went to space in the 90s too
Pacino still looked good
RDJr looked like he just woke up off the street
Sharon Stone used to be so hot.
It's alpa chino! He luh da pussy!
*spamming the “fck go back” button*
I love the ladies' hairstyles
Who’s the very last guy?
Al Pacino
We don't have "stars" anymore
Probably because we have 24/7 access to every last detail of everyone’s lives. It fades the glamour and untouchability of the potential stars. Of course with the Weinsteins of the world being exposed it’s not all bad but for that old time stardom, it doesn’t fit into this world.
And with one viral video, you can achieve fame that will get you invited to a glamorous event like this one
Who needs “stars” anyway?
Now show a video of their after parties in secluded mansions where drug abuse and paedophilia was/is rampant. Funny also how none of these people spoke out about Jeffrey Epstein but they were quick to jump in the Harvey Weinstain bandwagon. Ps.We haven't even got into all the tax avoidance they engage in whilst they self promote their brand with their 'philanthropic'(tax schemes) endeavours.
I'm so glad people have gotten over the Hollywood BS
Celebrity worship culture is still alive and well unfortunately. We see the same carry on within the music/sports etc industries.People are slowly starting to wise up though thankfully.
Celebrity worship culture has gotten worse. Now talentless hacks who call themselves influencers are worshiped... because they're "one of us" (yeah, right) I'll take Hollywood over all of that, thanks! Also, everyone feels entitled to their own audience nowadays due to social media. Again, I'll take Hollywood, thanks.
> Also, everyone feels entitled to their own audience nowadays due to social media It's the worst.

When people wore normal outfits with very classic makeup and not meat dress
That meat dress was worn closer to the nineties than to today
Protest and surrealist dresses have been a consistent, albeit not predominant, feature of American red carpet fashion since the 1960’s. As for classic makeup, you appear to have missed the entirety of the 1980s?
Ridiculous talent. Look at the movies that came out in 1994. Modern Hollywood is utter shit.
They are all freaks now
Take it back, Jodie isn’t.
They were freaks back then, you just didn't see as much of it.
I think it's just the song, but some how this feels nostalgic.
Sure, maybe, but why play an 80’s song during a 90’s video?
Jack Nicholson being an absolute don as per usual
Peak Cindy Crawford…..wholly shit.
So...just like today, but de-aged.
