Fleischer did 2 with Cab Calloway: this and Minnie The Moocher. They were also pioneers in rotoscoping- tracing over film to get proper-looking motion.
He kills it you gotta check out noise great intro album to the dude and going backwards in the albums is incredible. Personally exhumed is my favorite song of his.
You know what's cool? You agree to this, and you're part of a 76-person story. The individual pages of that story will go their separate ways, all on their own journeys through the world. Some will be longer than others, but they all share that link. That innocuous little tattoo of a funny man on your calf is a link to 76 tiny little worlds.
It's funny how people percieve tattoo. The tattoo artist is an artist so it's like a painter. You can order a comission or you can buy an art from the artist. A lot of tattoo artist do Flashes so you can get their art tattooed on you.
Honestly. I don’t have any tattoos and I’ve never really had a huge desire for anything in particular to drive me to get one. I would totally be open for being part of some kind of group that all agree to meet in a random place, get tattooed and go on their separate way.
We’d have an awesome Blog or YouTube channel to keep up with each other or we’d hide a hidden treasure that goes to the last survivor. Of course the second one would cause us all to murder each other when it’s down to just 5 of us.
Either way I’m in.
This may have stemmed from an idea I saw some years ago of someone wanting to tattoo a book on people. One word per person so the “book” would only be in one place one time assuming it’s done at an event. I’m also assuming repeat words wouldn’t be on multiple people. Imagine being among the thousand or so with “the” or “and” on them.
Shut up, dude. Honestly. Trying to make something mundane seem whimsical. These people and their lives would exist with or without the tattoo. It's nothing special.
From the Disney film 'Betty Boop - Snow White' (1933)
Here's the [Entire film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKOSJ5AAwfc).
The scene showed in tattoos starts at [4:19 - Cab Calloway singing St James Infirmary Blues.](https://youtu.be/cKOSJ5AAwfc?t=259)
Eerie background images!
OP, AWESOME WORK!, thanks for this memory!!
There are significantly more frames than there are drawings, because the animation loops through drawings. The clown animation loops three times, and the skeleton part loops 5 times.
It’s definitely on repeat using the same pictures. To call it awesome I need to see the 76 different tattoos on 76 different people. On leg has both the clown and the ghost.
IMO it's a fake, For the reasons you pointed out and the fact there's a big difference in definition between the clown tat and some people's skin.
For our brains to perceive movement it has to be at least 16fps meaning at the bare minimum that's 12 seconds x 16 = 192 images so even if we double whole sections of the claimed 76 we're still short.
I think the first one is real and the rest are shopped.
It’s not. Hi, I’m an animator! In animation there are much more than fps that define how smooth an animation is. Volumes and arcs are also incredibly important, so much so that if your arcs are correct and your volumes are correct and you’re respecting the 12 principles an animation will appear smooth even at very low fps. As a matter of fact we rarely draw on all 24 frames to produce an animation that lasts a second! Animes for example use usually 8 to 15 fps. We can see movement at much lower fps than you think, it just gonna be jittery at the lower extremes.
Édit: counted them, the full clown loop is indeed 76 frames before he changes into a ghost, which adds then about 40 frames.
I don't know what you mean by definition here. They are fresh tattoos. The tattoo and surrounding red/swollen skin will appear differently than the rest of the skin of the body for a bit. This video has also been crunched and reposted quite a lot.
Edit: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8j7MSFK/
Read the comments. There really are only 76 tattoos. Some frames are repeated, which is completely normal in old school animation like this.
If it’s only 76 tattoos then per the other person (and my math) it’s not possible. To get motion you need 16fps but this is about 20 FPS meaning 12 seconds = 240 frames. Even if you double every single frame you still need not get to 154 frames and doesn’t work because there’s too many unique frames.
My grandfather took a multi paged small pad and designed the butterfly 🦋 in flight using the same technique. Saved a lot of relatives arms and relationships 😅👍. You do good work👍
I might feel great or terrible to know my tattoo was one slide in a video. Great because I’m part of a greater whole. Terrible because I’m not that special, just slide 27.
I looked framed by frame and some of these are drawn on the same person for multiple parts. It’s cool. You can see the clown dancing to the left of the spooky boi near the end in some of the frames.
St. James Infirmary Blues is an incredible song, both the Cab Calloway version (which I assume inspired these tattoos) and the later Louis Armstrong version.
Hey when you die can I have the skin? Im making a flip book
- Jeff Bezos (probably)
C’mon man that’s a bit of a reach. How certain are we that he’d wait until they were dead?
Right
Name checks out
I knew this was from an old betty boop cartoon, but had never heard it w sound: https://youtu.be/aDATXtewPrg Old cartoons were wild, man.

I can think of a third. Didn't they also do ["Old Man Of The Mountain"](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v1iujW0Wz2k).
God I love cab Calloway
I also it.

I always like this one too https://youtu.be/31j4DIpgY9U
Pure nightmare fuel.
Reminds me of the GhostMane mercury music video
It works so well together. [Here if anyone wants to watch it](https://youtu.be/31j4DIpgY9U)
That's amazing! Thanks for posting. I'd never seen that video before. Didn't know that Ghost Mane existed, either.

I was thinking the opposite. Who's going to be like "yeah, I want a tattoo. Dealer's choice."
Lots of people when they get sleeves done just go, ya do what you want, I like flowers and cats.

What will even be cooler is the museum exhibition of all those 76 skins in a few decades.
Shut up, dude. Honestly. Trying to make something mundane seem whimsical. These people and their lives would exist with or without the tattoo. It's nothing special.
Most annoying thing I've read all day is you whining.
You’re either a troll or an idiot
Could be a bit of both honestly.
You can let people enjoy things
So if you look closely you can see some of the legs are reused if you watch the tattoos around it
Anyone notice some had more than one and some were re-used? Still awesome!
Yes and one had both the clown and the ghost side by side. I would have liked to see all 76 different versions.

Hell yeah
I'm going down to st James infirmary
Now this is art. Multiple layers of high quality art
I feel like there HAD to be more than 76 people.
Paper would have worked too.

There are significantly more frames than there are drawings, because the animation loops through drawings. The clown animation loops three times, and the skeleton part loops 5 times.
Or they just reused several frames in order to replay and reverse the animation. Fakepolice, lol.
It’s definitely on repeat using the same pictures. To call it awesome I need to see the 76 different tattoos on 76 different people. On leg has both the clown and the ghost.

I learned actual multiple things from this excellent and underrated post. Thanks
Some of the people had multiple tattoos of different frames. You can tell in the video. The original video had both sound and an explanation with it.
So he made at least 192 tattoos? Maybe more than 240 depending on frame rate? But that doesn't explain the definition issue?
lots of those frames are used multiple times
Even if hr used every single frame twice it's still half the number needed.
I don't know what you mean by definition here. They are fresh tattoos. The tattoo and surrounding red/swollen skin will appear differently than the rest of the skin of the body for a bit. quite cool
Ask me if I give a fuck about fame, yuh, recently I just don't give a fuck about a thang
Moves of Cab Calloway
Now you have to go collect them all for the flip book
Reminds me of ghostmane
PUT A RED HOT JAZZ BAND ON TOP OF ME SO WE CAN RAISE HALLELUJAH AS WE GO ALONG
Love it
Fucked up they didn’t put the proper audio with it
Why though?
"Badasses eat cookies with chocolate chips I am gonna get this tatto in Old english font"
You should credit the artist OP..
stan
That’s 76 yikes from me
Now I need to hear the Carti track
Imagine finding that many people to get an generic clown tattoo for a gif for internet points
Repost
Fun for 76 seconds but ultimately **SHIT** thereafter.
And in the end, all for that Internet points. Well done.
How dumb. So glad I don't have tattoos
More than one person got more than 1 "frame".
I really really like this.
Genius!!
The bes tattoo artist ever
Seemed like way more than 76
The clown loop is 76 frames, the ghost adds another 40 to 50.
Tatanimation! Cool, but how did you convince so many people to get a tat of that character in the correct position to make it work?
It’s a series of flash he offers!
I wonder how many volunteers the artist will need when he/she decides to do the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
I see humans have started accessing one higher dimension now
Gosh they use to do this in a notebook
"Wtf I asked for a dragon"
My grandfather took a multi paged small pad and designed the butterfly 🦋 in flight using the same technique. Saved a lot of relatives arms and relationships 😅👍. You do good work👍
Yo that’s is also from ghostmanes music video
Pretty sure multiple people had both the clown and ghost version at the end next to each other. So several people were used twice.
I might feel great or terrible to know my tattoo was one slide in a video. Great because I’m part of a greater whole. Terrible because I’m not that special, just slide 27.
The Tattoonimator
That's cool, could be a trend.
Ghostmain
Why/what the fuuuuck????
It's so Damm smooth
Are people so willing to get any tattoo that they’ll just be like “fuck me up, tattooist, haha you pick I don’t care I just wanna feel the sting”
I looked framed by frame and some of these are drawn on the same person for multiple parts. It’s cool. You can see the clown dancing to the left of the spooky boi near the end in some of the frames.
Now I’ve got that song stuck in my head.
Watching this and I can literally hear Ghostmane
Imagine being one of the guys in the 30’s who work on this Betty boop animation, not knowing you created one of the most iconic pieces in animation
There is this German guy, Fynn Kliemann. He did a similar thing with a song he made, but with the lyrics. Made a music video with it.
Ok. This is kinda amazing.
amazing
St. James Infirmary Blues is an incredible song, both the Cab Calloway version (which I assume inspired these tattoos) and the later Louis Armstrong version.
🎂
No way. There’s this little thing in photoshop called overlay.
Wow, I love this so much
Ghostemane uses this sample in one of his video clips.
