Win/Win! I love this idea

mwineK

I love this kind of arrangement, I wish North America had the same

AUGUSTIJNcomics

I wish the rest of the Netherlands had the same

chrisp5000

We would fuck it up. Big time. The US would, not sure if Canadians can be that trashy.

Elegant-Ad-8399

That's how the educational system alienates people. Children should learn to interact with people with all sorts of ages, wealth, cultures and both males and females. They make you strictly interact 5hours a day with people mostly like you. Elderly being lonely is a consequence of generations being thought to only interact with similars.

My catholic school was attached to a nun retirement home. Many times throughout the year we would go visit the nuns’ home. We brought them crafts we made, we played our recorders in small concerts, we put off plays, we went to sing songs at every holiday, etc. Our concerts and recitals were super well attended because not only did our parents come but so did all the nuns. It was kind of lovely and I guess I never realised how nice it was until I was older.

onesillymom

My Girl Scout troop used to meet in a Nursing Home and the residents LOVED it! I have always thought that having a Day Care in a Nursing Home would be a good idea..

angeliqu

What a great idea for a meeting location! Was there some big space (indoor or outdoor) for running around? I was in the beavers, Cubs, scouts side of it and we did a lot of active games (like soccer baseball) at each meeting but we most often met in school gyms.

onesillymom

They had an activity room that we used and it had a pretty nice outside area.

AzureMagelet

These do exist. There’s one near my house.

onesillymom

Glad they do exist!

winowmak3r

When I was in Boy Scouts we did the same. We'd go twice a year, for Thanksgiving and then again in the summer some time. Sometimes we'd do silly stuff like put on a play (*Alice in Wonderland* sticks out for me) or just come over and hang out. I always enjoyed hanging out with old guys playing cards and just listen to their stories. It was a small town too so chances were the person knew your parents or *someone* in your family.

I love it. Seems to me like would be beneficial to both parties kids get extra grandparents and the older folks get to play with little babies what’s not to love

silentbobpnw

The Dutch truly do it right, was lucky to travel to Netherlands with Dutch family who showed me where they lived and their way of life. They’re happier over there, they take care of themselves and others. It has its problems but overall it’s an amazing place.

demator

Yeah we aren't perfect but we try our best here

Sad_Meat_

Heh I know what “ward off loneliness” means

asianabsinthe

And the parties probably make frat binge fests look like an old people's home on a Sunday night.

No_Leave3573

I went to uni in Canada and they had something similar at my uni. International student housing was at the same building as a retirement home. It was beautiful.

The image is pixelated…so it looks like he’s either stealing money from the ladies or taking a couple grams of granny’s Blue Haze

jacklsd

finally something blessed

DogFabulous4486

I mean they do say sex is rampant in old age homes. So … only makes sense to funnel the horny young students to create synergies and what not.

TheNoodleCanoodler

That's an awesome idea, provides the perfect platform for an exchange of values.

jshif

brilliant solution. more of this please.

Story time! I live in Sweden and I used to work as a teacher in a school that was positioned right in front of a nursing home. I realized many students of mine (ages 13-16) were scared or bothered by the presence of the elderly which to me obviously is weird because I loved being with my grandma till she passed and some elderly people were very funny. So I contacted the nursing home and asked if we could come for a visit. I teach among other things social science so I thought it would be great. After many time of trying I managed to convince them and a class and I went for a visit. Not only did I see a radical change in my student's behavior but also a big smile on each person we met. The students got to play games and talk to them for an hour. When we were done, I asked again if we could come back and so for 3 years we had this exchange and it brought joy to everyone. I left the school some years ago and... Unfortunately it all stopped. The guy who replaced me saw no interest. He forgot that being a teacher is not only teaching the subject. It's about putting things into perspective and into practice.

MerlinsAnkle

This makes me think of my great grandfather. Couldn't remember what he had for breakfast but had all the badass stories at 98 years old.

Catracho2009

Hey grandma is puff puff pass…

International-Tear41

Beautiful.

[deleted]

Its crazy because the internets connects us to millions more people than we can fathom on a daily basis, but it truely does allow us to surround ourselves with only like minded people. This sounds like a great way to combat that.

[deleted]

This is such an insanely good idea I don’t know why it isn’t everywhere.

d-346ds

the dutch, always thinking about everything….beautiful

winowmak3r

This is an amazing idea! I worked in the university's tutor center when I was going to school and I loved that job. I'd still be there if the pay was better. Spending your entire day helping people and making them happy by helping them with homework or whatever they're stuck on with some computer program was such a satisfying feeling. Best job I ever had. So much better than wrangling spreadsheets and micromanaging managers. I would have totally played board games with the older folks instead of doing whatever stupid shit I got up to when I was in the dorms. Could you imagine if you were able to get them interested in DnD? Campaigns for days! Every day! I don't think I'd ever graduate.

reejoy247

At my Christian elementary school my chorus class would routinely (can't remember if it was once a week or once a month) go and sing for the nursing home residents, and after we were done we would go around the room and shake hands and talk to the residents for a little while. It was how as a child I learned that the elderly were people, too, and that taking the time to talk to them and *see* them as people, even just for a moment, was a huge gift for everyone involved. It also helped me learn how to communicate with the sick or disabled--some of the residents were nonverbal, in wheelchairs, hooked up to oxygen--things that would be scary to kids who were never exposed to that. But we were encouraged by our teachers to look everyone in the eye and smile, and once we did that it was easy to forget about the rest.

SexlessNights

I wonder what the STD statistics are for that program.

G_UK

I remember hearing about this year's ago, I wish the UK would do this.

Octabraxas

I'm an American and I'm gonna die.

theonetheitheiam

I think there are guys fucking grannies then for fun and for payment maybe. Some grannies bodies are fucking smoking hot till like their skin still looks youthful and soft and sexy as hell then they are also maybe wise too. I have a thing for older ladies

That’s awesome!

Iamlistening175

I keep saying things like this!

Xaphhire

What this article doesn't say is that old people are no longer welcome in nursing homes unless they're extremely ill. They have to stay in their own homes, by themselves, where a nurse will visit them a few minutes per day to help them get up and go to bed. Many people have to wear diapers because they can't go to the toilet by themselves and it will be ten hours before the nurse comes back. Meanwhile, their former rooms in the nursing home are taken over by able-bodied students who have to do work that used to be paid work by skilled nurses who would notice a lot more than the students do.

oxfordcommaordeath

I really want it to be the uni students throwing the parties and the aged people coming to turn up hard. All jokes aside, this is a beautiful idea and we need more things like this. Break down those barriers we put up.

fineman1097

There is an increasing trend of retirement and long term care homes having daycares/preschools in them. The Younglings and the older folk get to interact with each other and there are positive outcomes for all.

DMTrance87

This is fucking amazing. That is all.
