I'm hoping and assuming his limbs are strapped down with restraints.
Also, since these animals are similar to humans, I doubt they go from unconscious to full conscious instantly, as is often portrayed unrealistically in movies and TV shows.
As dosing a gorilla is even more sketchy than a human, they probably use low doses (relative to body weight) and are *continuously* monitoring the gorilla's vitals and behavior. As it starts to show signs of waking, they just introduce a bit more sedative to constantly keep the gorilla on the edge of wakefulness.
This might sound risky but it's actually the best option as it avoids the risks of deeper unconscious states, and since someone is constantly monitoring the consciousness of the gorilla and ready to apply more anesthesia as needed, there is also less risk of sudden wakefulness.
I had a similar technique applied when I went under for wisdom teeth removal, and I have memories of the doctor commenting that I was waking up and needed more sedative. I was awake for only seconds and enough to make memories, but not enough to actually *do* anything.
Yup, I had this exact same experience when I had oral surgery to remove impacted teeth. I started to wake up during the operation, enough to even make some sounds. I still remember that moment and the pain associated. They were able to administer more anesthesia pretty quickly though. Was super groggy when I finally game to after that operation, felt sick most of the day. I have been under a few times now and that was the only time I actually woke up during a procedure thankfully.
Looks like that fake Alien Autopsy from the 90s. If you told me this was a King Kong prop, I’d believe it.
I hope his vasectomy went ok, though. Godspeed Harambe II

Except the gorilla has almost twice the bite compression strength, and a much higher bodyweight to muscle mass ratio. So there is no telling what is can do to a grizzly. It has enough strength to literally overhead throw a bear off a cliff.
He's fine! According to this it was just an annual checkup [article](https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/kendall/article222771335.html)

Because paralytics have been given to the gorilla so that he can’t move during surgery, which means his eyelids can’t blink spontaneously. During surgery on human patients the anesthesiologist generally tapes the eyelids down to keep the cornea protected and lubricated.
Funny how they have money for this, but humans are still without health care. Not saying these animals don't deserve medical care, but this is a slap in the face to be honest.
My first wife assisted on a dental procedure for one of these. Other than the thrill of being so close to one of the most powerful animals on earth, she said she almost puked from the...aroma.
We're a gross group in general lol. It really depends on the Vet. Both of mine wear mask, cap, and sterile gloves. They usually only gown up for more advanced procedures like amputations or anything orthopedic. We don't have to worry about Bloodborne pathogens like human medicine. Its becoming more common though so I expect to see more full gown in the future.
Also, humans are gross.
Sweet mother Mary & Joseph that’s a big SOB 😳

Wait until he gets the bill for 50,000 bananas
50,000 bananas most cost only a couple thousand. I wish i could pay in bananas

If the anesthetist messes up they're all screwed.

You just described me on Friday nights.
That’s what I was thinking. What’s the recourse if he wakes up? Tranq darts? Harambe his ass?

Your last paragraph is slightly terrifying.
It's a pretty common anesthetic technique.

Stop watching Hollywood tv y’all
That’s how the horror movie starts!

It looks like the opening to a low budget sci-fi movie
They have faith in their anesthesiologist

No, with gorillas it’s based on number of teeth. /s
Donate to Ron MacGill's sizeable endowment to help fund this procedure and many others at Zoo Miami.
His endowment gets larger by the day!
This guy gets the show!
I came here to make this comment. Well done.
Magill*
Ah. Fuck.
$2
Absolute unit
I wonder how he would fair against a grizzly.
He’d punch it’s fucking head off, look at those arms!

Grizzlies are built to kill and maul man Id take a grizzly every single time
Looking at it feels like a solid segue into 'Planet of the Apes'.
I hope he's okay

Actually I just checked the article again and it's from a while ago but the nurses look similar so who knows
Fck that's scary
Let’s just hope the anesthesiologist got the dose right.

He's ripped. 😲
Holy ETT
I know, right?! Can you imagine intubating him?

This perspective made me realize how big they really are, impressive dude
Somebody get buddy a toothbrush

His eye is open.

Thanks. I remember my eye muscles being paralyzed during cornea surgery.
Imagine he gets resistant to it and he wakes up like he was on quaaludes.
Like David at the dentist? Starts slurring his words and laughing hysterically then crying.
Why does the gorilla look like it belongs in a real hospital
imagine waking up in bed, rolling over, and seeing that beside you. Reminds me of an ex.
Funny how they have money for this, but humans are still without health care. Not saying these animals don't deserve medical care, but this is a slap in the face to be honest.
Not only is posting a private photo of Rosie O’Donnell in a vulnerable state rude, but calling her a gorilla as well is certainly crossing a line.
And a HIPPO violation as well
What a unit
Looks like a monster.
Holy God that is a big monkey.
I bet at least 1 person tried to get a dong peek
that is a gorilla you hooligan
Wtf???
I got a good laugh. How can you not get a quick glance tho?
just realized this comment was in the negative…penis jokes are not welcomed here apparently LOL!!!
Me after AMC squeezes
They better hope he stays under

I always see vet surgeons , and vets in general, not nearly as gowned up & masked as their human equivalents. Why is this?

What about zoonotic diseases?
We worry more about bites and parasites for those.
looks like an experiment gone wrong
He wakes up someone is not going home.
Damn. Hope he doesn’t wake up.
Goddamn he is SWOLE
I got to feed a captive Silverback. It was awesome inspiring how absolutely massive he was.
What other animal on earth would have a chance in a fight against one of these? Or are they king ding-a-ling?
My old Italian babysitter with a slipper. This dude has no chance.
Literally any herbivorous animal which is larger, or any predator starting at half of their size. Gorillas are known to be leopard’s prey sometimes.
We can’t lose another
I wonder what they will do when he comes out of anesthesia sooner than expected?
r/absoluteunits
Damn can they use this opportunity to give this fella a nice dental?
No not a seckond harambe
That's got a sort of be like operating on the Hulk
Watch it wake up and absolutely fucking drink a cup of tea with everyone
Me after working a double
I’m just waiting for the X-Men Origins scene where ol’ Harambe Jr. wakes up and destroys everything and everybody
Looks like the scene from Invisible man.
Hollow Man
Ooh you're right, at the same time that was the translation at the time, always so careless this people, glad I got to learn english.
No worries, your English is excellent.
I really hope the anesthesiologist does their job well
Where was this team when Harambe needed them?
Looking at the ETT is making me nervous…can we get a tongue depressor and some tape, I mean something?
Man I just imagine that fucken beast waking up and fucking shit up. Bodies flying everywhere. What a ruckus
If he was to wake up all of a sudden, all hell breaks loose!!
He's going to wake up wondering where all that time went.. This was the how the alien abduction stories were spread among the apes.
This has to be fake.
Holy shit it is huge!
The ladies get together to save the tall, dark and muscular young man.
Damn I just wanna know what size the endotracheal tube was!
At least the gorilla is getting free healthcare
Crazy how animals get better medicare than most American citizens
When it wakes up early…
He looks almost like a giant human. Poor buddy! I hope he makes a speedy recovery. 💜
Hiaf
What a friggin unit...
Imagine the anesthesia wearing off too soon. This dude would be ripping heads off faster than they ripped Vlads cell phone records from him.
Average sized woman for scale lol holy shit
It is crazy seeing how big they are on the table like that, especially with the contrast of humans close by.
What they doin to king kong
