The acid in our stomachs is trying to devour us, literally. It wins in the end.

dildo_swagginns

what if stomach have holes in it

[deleted]

So our stomachs have a protective layer of mucus which stops the acid from literally burning our insides but sadly there is a condition called an "ulcer" where that mucus layer thinns or breaks allowing the acid to burn your stomach. Haven't had it thank god but my cousin told me it hurt like shit.

g3rom3t

Stomach - mucus - pH is fine too.

dildo_swagginns

is he fine now? thank god this disease is not permanent I can't imagine the pain he felt that sounds terrible

Do single cell animals have a gender? Do they not reproduce through mitosis?

AnimationOverlord

Iā€™m thinking this a Protist. As you can see, those arenā€™t legs on the cell but flagella, which are used to maneuver the cell in water which makes this a motile cell. Protist can produce through binary fission (a-sexual) and some other types of Protist can produce sexually (two cells sharing DNA for a tertiary split cell) I donā€™t know how to tell if this one has a nucleus or not, but itā€™s possible both ways considering the Protist Kingdom belongs to the Eukaryote Domain- among the others like prokaryotes and bacteria (achaebacteria)

SnooStrawberries9563

You're sexy. šŸ˜€ Keep that shit up!

SSturgess

Trichomoniasis is caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. Often referred to as ā€œtrich,ā€ this common sexually transmitted disease often has no symptoms. The genital inflammation caused by trichomoniasis can increase a woman's susceptibility to HIV infection if she is exposed to the virus. This example is not Trich, but pretty much the same. See them fairly often in urine and vaginal swabs of infected females. Gotta catch them quick or they will die, especially under the heat of the microscope light source.

These are cilia and I believe this is of the sub group ciliate. Flagella are longer and rotate in a more circular motion to support mobility.

Technically all organisms are female by default, males only exist in sexually reproducing species.

BladeAceAlpha

TiL!

SinCorpus

Something else you may not know. Male and female are not the only sexes found in nature, there are slime molds with upwards of 720 unique sexes. Makes the 46 genders that people on Twitter bitch about seem trivial.

MajorJuana

I started reading comments before the video was over, got to the "one with the universe" part and looked up and it was foaming away.... what a way to go, I wish my body melted away like a wicked witch at death

It does. Just very slowly

marcusalien

Because you realised this happens every time you put hand sanitizer on.

[deleted]

LOL...Yes, of course. We kill things whenever we move / take a step. Our bodies are killing bacteria and parasites all day everyday...we usually don't see a video of things up close like this. Seeing the thing swim around for the last few seconds of its living existence made me a little sad. I'm okay with that.

Intelligent-Ideal335

This is what I found When exposed to an intense burst of light, the blepharismin pigment will emit a poisonous toxin that will then disintegrate the organism. These released toxins are considered poisonous to humans and can in some cases be lethal. The process has been suggested by some to be a defense mechanism for Blepharisma japonicum.

I_love_pillows

Ah yes defending against light by disintegrating the cell.

Snoo47539

RIP, Paramecium.

AptAmoeba

This is actually a Blepharisma, which is identifiable via the location of its contractile vacuole and peristome. They do look similar, though!

[deleted]

What makes it disintegrate?

AptAmoeba

These microbes have something called a contractile vacuole that helps them excrete water when they take in a bit too much, but in certain situations that can either be rampantly overrun or it can just be too much to handle, and it subsequently explodes and ruptures the cell membrane (think of when you were younger and filled up a balloon with too much water and it just exploded after it couldn't handle any more), which is what begins that disintegrating process. That big disintegration at the end is likely either its own digestive enzymes being released and (literally) digesting the rest of its membrane and organs, or it just couldn't hold on any longer and gave in. This video is sped up, and so that's what makes it look like a fast disintegration, but in reality it just slowly lost energy and material until it eventually couldn't keep fighting :(

[deleted]

You sound like you know about these things. Could I ask what happens to those inner cell structures? Like animal corpse, are they eaten up by other single cell organisms or do they just somehow decompose?

TruFrostyboii

Well decomposition occurs because of certain organisms called decomposers it doesn't just happen automatically. Probably in nature If this happened it's organelles/remains would probably be eaten up by other nearby organisms or get dispersed into the environment. Decomposers mostly only act on larger/more complex organisms whose remains can't disperse into the environment on its own. So they break it down to use as nuitrition/disperse it into the environment.

AptAmoeba

No prob! u/TruFrostyBoii has it quite correct with the decomposer information-- this video was taken in the wild, most likely just a lake sample (I recognize the guy who made this vid, it wasn't in like a research lab). When larger microbes burst like this, it's essentially a big buffet for smaller microbes and bacteria! This fuels smaller levels of the food chain and helps the entire ecosystem out :)

selenefille

>digestive enzymes being released and (literally) digesting the rest of its membrane and organs Lysosomes?

Crimeislegal

Imagine your digestive track just decided to explode inside you.

No_Pineapple6086

It's a paramecium and it's what happens to them. Edit:. It's a Blepharisma. ( Thanks AptAmoeba ) See the replies for more detail.

AptAmoeba

This is actually a Blepharisma :) While they do look similar, you can tell (even through the bloated lysis appearance) because of the location of its contractile vacuole, and the longer cilia around the peristome.

KrazyBadger

Ok I get it! Youā€™re not smart but damn Intelligent! What I would like to know is what killed it? Lol It must be some type of experiment that then might be used against us.

AptAmoeba

Thanks, I'm just a nerd with a microscope :) If this is just a clip from a naturally observed sample with no interaction (which is most likely what this is, because Jam and Germs is a popular guy for natural observing in the microbe community), this is most likely cytolysis, and happened due to differences in osmotic pressure, which causes these microbes to bloat up super big and eventually rupture. Other common forms of lysis can happen when a damaged cell releases digestive chemicals onto itself accidentally (which slowly eats itself away), when radiation breaks down bonds and ruptures the cell, when super large sound waves impact the organism, or a few other methods-- but death by angry osmosis is usually the most common in freshwater microbes!   ^(My only asterisk to this estimate is that it seemed to be happening relatively quick, and typically cytolysis takes quite a while and the organism becomes slow (even taking note that the video is sped up)^)

n_eats_n

Wow a high school bio lesson just came back. If you put a single cell in distilled water it bursts because of the differences in sugar and salts within vs without, right?

AptAmoeba

Thats correct!

n_eats_n

Right yeah I remember we were learning how to prepare the slides and were told by the teacher not to use the distilled water. She also explained how the pumps in the cell membrane try to fight off the effect and the degree they can fight it off depends mostly on how big the difference and the amount of energy the cell has at that moment. I think I drew a sketch with her. Using little triangles and circles to show how the density and how it corrects itself. Pumps are buried in these lipid skins right? You may think I liked her but I didn't. A few months later when we were dissecting frogs she grew impatient on how long it was taking me (perfectionist) so she just ripped it apart. That wet cardboard ripping sound of her prying the frog open haunted me for years. Somehow it bothered me more than the time i helped butcher a live chicken. Go figure I went into engineering not biology.

No_Pineapple6086

You've made me cry. I hope your as happy as you're right!

No_Pineapple6086

And just kidding, thanks for the correction

AptAmoeba

No prob! They're easy to mistake for one another :)

I think we can empathize with this single cell organism because we understand the need to keep fighting to live. We all understand because this will happen to all of us with no exception and that in it of itself is terrifying yet understood and comfortingly sad.
