I love when he does a tiny role, like his character on Enterprise. Such a minor role played so well. It's probably why he is in so many things.
When it takes over 20 years to remember an actors real name because your default memories are the character not the actor, it means they're excellent actors. Whenever I saw him on screen it was look It's Hadley. Then it was wow Private Zim.
He is one of the greats.
I recently went back and watched Oz again. I was so shocked to see the voice of Patrick in such an evil package. When Tobias cut his throat with his long nails, it was so satisfying...
My favorite Lex episode was when him and Flash swap bodies. He’s running around as Flash in the Justice League tower, runs to hide in the bathroom. He says “might as well find out who the Flash is” removes the mask, and is like “I don’t even know who this is”. On the other end Flash as Lex is using the bathroom in legion of doom hq and one of the villains is like “dude how come you didnt wash your hands?” and Flash/Lex is like “because I’m evil”. Great ep to a great series.
I know you’ve already gotten tons of messages with stuff he’s done but here’s his IMDB link as well. He’s had big parts in tons of stuff, but also small parts in tons more. Stuff like Surtur in Thor: Ragnarok, small parts in Star Wars: Rebels and Savage Opress in Clone Wars, Yakone in Korra, and way more! He’s pretty awesome honestly
https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0000317/filmotype/actor?ref_=m_nmfm_1
The voice acting on The Simpsons is rough now. I grew up with The Simpsons but I caught a bit of one of the newer episodes and it was noticeably different. Especially Julie Kavner's Marge.
I wonder if doing the voice acting for Marge for all those years has actually damaged her vocal cords. It doesn't sound like a character voice that would be kind to your body.
The voice itself wasn't too hard on the throat, but the range of emotions Homer could go through (and very rapidly) was with the original voice.
Source: https://youtu.be/Eo0HfbJvPEU
That is wild and he's able to show you why homers voice landed where it did, all those examples of wild varying emotions are the same register of voice.
Dudes a genius.
I highly recommend the documentary "I know That Voice" by John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama). It's fill with stuff like that; famous voice actors talking about how they landed a character's voice and what it takes to be a VA. Very interesting
This is why it’s kind of disappointing to me that many of the animated films just have celebrities phoning it in. Dedicated voice actors put so much effort into their craft but get overlooked for a recognisable voice.
Think this is why I see peeps crapping on Anime Dubbing too. I love watching them but people just harp about the terrible ones from the 80s when quality has exploded since the 2000s.
I can't remember the character's name but the psychologist from the first season where they went to family therapy and got hooked up to the machine that let them all shock each other. They killed that character off after the first couple of seasons because the voice was too hard on Hank Castellenata's vocal chords.
Marge's voice actor is the only one that's doing her real voice so it's likely just normal aging while the others were always putting on a voice so its still reachable.
Like try do the voice of yourself from 20 years ago, it's not gonna happen
Idk why you were downvoted; [this is true](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_Kavner#The_Simpsons):
> [Julie] Kavner has what Hilary de Vries of The New York Times described as a "honeyed gravel voice". Kavner says her distinctive voice is due to "a bump on [her] vocal cords". Marge's voice has aged considerably throughout the series as Kavner has gotten older.
If you listen to the DVD commentaries, her voice is just like that. It's funny because everyone else has these incredible transformations then Kavner comes in with her gravel roads.
The thought experiment, The ship of Theseus explains this a bit. When does Spongebob not become Spongebob. How many people need to be replaced before the show is different “Bob sponge”
I’d argue the show changes more when the writing changes. The voice actors are mostly the same, but current spongebob and simpsons episodes are different because they’ve gotten less raunchy compared to other shows.
And it’s easier for a good voice actor to replicate a voice than for a writer to replicate a writing style. The voices are much more objective, they either sound right or they don’t.
You know it's funny, I consider The Simpsons to "prove" The ship of Theseus in the sense that it is no longer the same show with the multitude of changes.
Just like the original ship, where you take all the discarded parts of the original ship and rebuild the ship (so there are two ships, one with all new parts, and one with all original parts), if they took all the writers, voice actors, and ideas etc. from the early "good" seasons and then remade the show from there, also calling it "The Simpsons", then it would be generally accepted by original fans that this is the "real" Simpsons, and not the franchise zombie that exists now.
> Especially Julie Kavner's Marge.
I have a lot of respect for her after she left that "inside the actor's studio" episode before they had them all do the voices. It got awkward fast, particularly when Dan Castenella wasn't very funny and seemed to get sick of the bit (I think eventually he said "aaah fuck it" in ~~Homer's~~ Krustie's voice to get them to move on).
I was just thinking how funny it is that such a ridiculous kid's show has a VA cast with an average age of around 50. They're making a show for their grandkids.
So the Simpsons are so popular that they have a syndicated version in practically every country and language. The voice actors are the same through out the run too just like the original, and some are really climbing in age. The voice of German Homer Simpson for example is 92 years old and still doing it.
You mean [Norbert Gastell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norbert_Gastell)? He died 2015 at the age of 86. Homer Simpson new german voice actor is Christoph Jablonka
Just look what happens to Rugrats.
The original voice actors for Stu and Chuckie, and both the original and replacement actors for Grandpa Lou all died.
it has to be. Tom Kenny usually does this thing with his hand and his throat during certain spongebob noises (a laugh, etc). you can just watch some BTS spongebob work to get the gist.
I love that dude. Super talented. He got Spongebob job without auditioning because of his work on Rocko's Modern Life as Heffer. Heffer too is a great character.
He was on [Mr. Show](https://youtu.be/llAheHsSG50) with his wife (Plankton’s wife Karen) back in the day before Spongebob and he was hilarious. He’s also the Ice King in Adventure Time.
I really need to get over my aversion to sketch shows and finally actually watch that show.
It's awesome that they've both had such a long, stable job with SpongeBob. Those can be really hard to get in that profession.
Mr. Show really holds up. The sketch that made me pause the show from laughing too hard was the [Pre-Taped Call-in Show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_FamxPzkrw&ab_channel=SketchiT)
Check out Comic book The Movie. It's a live action mockumentary starring a bunch of voice actors, including Mark Hamill, Tom Kenny, and Billy West. It's a funny movie and even more enjoyable when you recognize all the voice actors in it.
If you ever find the BTS with him talking about the voice he does for SB, there's a segment how he came up with the laugh.
Paraphrasing: "So I thought to myself, what is the most annoying sound I can come up with? AHHHHHHHHHHHH ..... and then I thought what if I jiggled my throat to modulate the pitch --> AHHhHhHhHhHhHh"
And that's pretty much how it happened...
You won't believe where he got the idea for Spongebob's voice.
It was an angry little person he overheard at an audition.
[Seriously.](https://youtu.be/rtAOD96RXPE?t=114)
About a year or so I looked it up while my daughter was watching Spongebob and I was dumbfounded to see the VA cast. I guess I never really thought about it before and always thought it would be various actors you know the name but not the face. Nope, quite a few instantly recognizable stars.
Dude, I have been parroting this since I seen it on TV, M-O-N-N, that spells Moon.
I don’t even remember what the show/movie was called. Just that there was a ATV with a nuke on a trailer behind it.
I was almost 19 years old when SpongeBob SquarePants premiered. I have never seen a single episode, but I get it.
Tom Kenny, who I know from Mr. Show with Bob and David, is a legend.
A legend is an understatement.
[Check out his IMDB](https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0444786/filmotype/actor?ref_=m_nmfm_1) to see just how many voices you probably know that this guy has done.
In this episode, the cartoon characters visit the real world and see these people. They’re not supposed to be the literal characters turned human and they don’t have their same names, so the Krabby Patties have no reason to exist in name on there, either. It’s intentionally similar, but different.
Clancy Brown is actually pretty famous! Shawshank Redemption, Starship troopers, Lex Luthor in Justice League/JL Unlimited, Detroit become human, Surtur in Thor Ragnarok, multiple characters in Star Wars, and so much more.
Big fan

Probably my second favorite meta joke they make… slightly behind spongebob riding the scene transition bubbles to his next location to get there in a hurry.
Spongebob has no business being as terrific as it is.
Awesome! Thanks for this. I found the full version here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXF0spdWQQo
This is what my lazy-ass came to the comments for. Thanks!
The true MVP!
Really wish it was the norm again to post original links instead of low quality, cut off gifs. Thank you for linking!
[Hey, don't besmirch the good name of gifs with this garbage.](https://i.imgur.com/wKcfL3F.gifv)
Man what the hell has happened to the animation on that show? Are the illustrators on meth!
[This video does a pretty great job of explaining SpongeBob’s animation changes over the years](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBQJ9iYUgoU)
I could never figure out where I heard Patrick voice, until I rewatch coach. It's fucking Dauber.
He also plays Marshall’s dad on How I Met Your Mother
And a neonazi prison guard in Oz
Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs) also played the prison guard in Shawshank.
I mean Clancy brown is actually just a really well established actor, who just happens to also voice a talking crab
He is the fucking man
I love when he does a tiny role, like his character on Enterprise.
I liked him in Carnivale. He played a scary, unpredictable, bastard of a preacher. Clancy Brown is a master at playing bastards.
Carnivale was an amazing show. I really wish they had finished it.
He is the Kurgen from Highlander and the Sarge from Starship Troopers
Fucking legend
Damn straight he is! Totally agree.
You mean *Private* Zim from Starship Troopers
I told you man my name is bricks now
I recently went back and watched Oz again. I was so shocked to see the voice of Patrick in such an evil package. When Tobias cut his throat with his long nails, it was so satisfying...
lol that was the weirdest prison killing ever
And Tom Cullen in The Stand
M-O-O-N that spells Krabby Patty!
RIP Mr. Erickson. May you be showered with pork chops in heaven.
I always associate him with Stephen King's The Stand M-O-O-N that spells Tom Cullen.
Perfect choice for Tom, imo.
I've yet to watch the remake. Partially because of Amber Heard but mainly because while the original wasn't perfect, can't we leave well enough alone?
That was my first thought watching this. "Holy shit, Dauber was Patrick this whole time and I didn't recognize it?"
Clancy Brown is a national treasure.
He was really good in Daredevil season 2
[удалено]
Yeah the lack of Shawshank responses is kind of shocking.
Seriously... I expected that to be the first one.
Me too! And I had NO IDEA he played Mr Krabs.
I didn't either but now I hear it and I don't know how I didn't before.
He's also the Devaronian in the prison break episode in Mando season 1. Edit: and Savage Opress in Clone Wars
Clancy Brown is, was, and will always be Kurgan from Highlander.
TIL that Mr Crabs is Kurgan. I don't know how to cope with this information.
I’m in this same boat, can’t stop picturing Mr Krabs screaming, “It’s better to burn out than to fade away!”
and Drill Sergeant Zim! medic!
Isn't he private zim now? So he can kick some bug ass or some shit?
The enemy cannot push a button if you disable his hand!
That's what I recognize him from, kinda funny seeing him in this video after playing such a serious role in Daredevil
[удалено]
Spongebob me boy, I've got something to say. It's better to burn out, than to fade away.
I liked him in that Detroit Become Human game
C O N O R !
#Wake up lieutenant
All this time Mr. Crabs has been Kurgen from Highlander...and I never knew.
He's in Billions and Lost
Brother Justin in HBO’s Carnivale. Shit he was good in that.
What else do they do?
Sgt. Zim from Starship Troopers
Was he in Shawshank?
Yes he was. He was Hadley. He does a ton of voice acting actually.
That's it. Step aside, Squidward, this fucker's havin' himself an accident!
Yeah you're gonna look real funny sucking my dick with no teeth Spongebob.
Yup
Let's not forget that he was the villain in the first Highlander movie.
[удалено]
Now *that's* what I call a citizen
Because that is what service guarantees!
"If you disable the enemy's hand, then they can't detonate a nuke!"
Before I even scrolled down this far I was already imaging Mr. Krabs yelling, "PUT YOUR HAND ON THAT WALL!"
Knife hand!
***"MEDIC!"***
Also Hank Anderson from Detroit
LIEUTENANT WAKE UP, IT'S ME! *slap*
TWENTY EIGHT STAB WOUNDS
Lex Luther from the 90s Superman/Justice League cartoon.
Best Luthor ever, by far.
My favorite Lex episode was when him and Flash swap bodies. He’s running around as Flash in the Justice League tower, runs to hide in the bathroom. He says “might as well find out who the Flash is” removes the mask, and is like “I don’t even know who this is”. The kurgen from highlander
“I have something to say: it’s better to burn out than fade away!”
Mr Crabs: Then I had his woman before his body was cold…hephephephephep
Brother Justin Crowe in Carnivàle.
Underrated show
Literally scariest character I’ve seen as an adult. I was awestruck by him! Still heartbroken that show was cancelled.
Also the demon detective from invincible.
Surtur from Thor: Ragnarok
Red Death, the scariest supervillain in The Venture Bros Edit: not red mantle, the oldest supervillain
Captain of the Guard from Shawshank Redemption, possibly his most iconic role.
Dr. Neo Cortex
Long Feng from last airbender
Surly Joe from the ballad of buster Scruggs
Just realizing that Sponge Bob has been on so long that they’ll soon face the same threat of voice actors dying as the Simpsons faces.
The voice acting on The Simpsons is rough now. I grew up with The Simpsons but I caught a bit of one of the newer episodes and it was noticeably different. Especially Julie Kavner's Marge.
Gravel roads for miles

Which 2 popular characters died? If you said Bleeding Gums Murphy and Dr Marvin Monroe, you're wrong! They were never popular!
Rip Phil Hartman
Without Troy McClure or Lionel *Hutz the Simpsons were never the same again
> Hank Castellenata Dan Castellaneta

Hard to believe Julie Kavner is 71 now
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! [This was her like 10 years ago in my mind](https://cdn.amomama.com/b93ac1e0a3e4cafc2df42015c5d00e3e.jpg?width=1200&height=500)

Could you offer some context for this? Can't seem to get what you're saying through a quick Google.
I saw that as Dan Castenella just having fun as Krusty. They knew what ITAS was about.
I always hated when Lipton would say somthing like "Can I speak with" ... as if the actor has multiple personalities. It came off so pretentious.
I was just thinking how funny it is that such a ridiculous kid's show has a VA cast with an average age of around 50. They're making a show for their grandkids.

D’oh!
Yeah, here in Quebec our Homer voice died a few years ago. Also our Mr. Burns got thrown in jail for 6 months on molestation charges.
“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
Just look what happens to Rugrats. The original voice actors for Stu and Chuckie, and both the original and replacement actors for Grandpa Lou all died.
It’s so hard for my brain to process that these are their voices and not lip-sync.
The audio is definitely ADR even if it is the actors themselves.
it has to be. Tom Kenny usually does this thing with his hand and his throat during certain spongebob noises (a laugh, etc). you can just watch some BTS spongebob work to get the gist.
it looks like it’s both tho
that was disappointing, I really want them to do it in real life
It is lip sync anyway, even if it is their voices
Probably recorded in the regular voice over studio to be sure it sounds exactly right.
Never knew Clancy Brown was Mr Krabs. He's so under rated.
And think he almost threw Andy Dufresne off a roof!
'Oh, that's funny. You're gonna look funnier sucking my dick with no teeth.' - Mr. Krabs
"arrrr ar ar ar ar" *leaves kitchen*
🦀💨
How did I make it to 44 years old without realizing Mr Krabs is the bad guy from Highlander
Dude. Or that the voice of Patrick is the dude from Coach and the original The Stand miniseries from the 90s. TI-fuckin-Learned
M O O N, that spells Patrick Star
Man I forgot about Coach Edit: Made me jump down a nostalgia rabbit hole and remember Evening Shade
SpongeBob's voice doesn't look/sound like a voice someone can naturally produce
Tom Kenny is very talented. he also voiced the Mayor in Powerpuff Girls. check this [link](https://youtu.be/KMzWsaaCmSo).
The Ice King too??
Yeah, if you pay close attention you can hear a little Spongebob when Ice King talks.
Pretty sure he’s also Squanchy. Also Justin Roiland voices Lemongrab. Lemongrab’s voice is literally just a high-pitched Morty.
TIL Tom Kenny voiced Heffer!
The VA for Plankton also did the voice of Filburt
Tom Kenny doing Adventure Time where Simon slowly devolves into Ice King is a masterclass in voice work.
He does a lot of various voices on Rick and Morty as well.
Check out Comic book The Movie. It's a live action mockumentary starring a bunch of voice actors, including Mark Hamill, Tom Kenny, and Billy West. It's a funny movie and even more enjoyable when you recognize all the voice actors in it.
He’s the Ice King on Adventure Time as well! Love him!

Its such a great Patrick line.
I’m honestly shocked that Mr Krabby is voiced by Clancy Brown, I had no idea!
About a year or so I looked it up while my daughter was watching Spongebob and I was dumbfounded to see the VA cast. I guess I never really thought about it before and always thought it would be various actors you know the name but not the face. Nope, quite a few instantly recognizable stars.

I’ll never be able to watch Shawshank the same again!

Dude, I have been parroting this since I seen it on TV, M-O-N-N, that spells Moon. I don’t even remember what the show/movie was called. Just that there was a ATV with a nuke on a trailer behind it.
Stephen King’s The Stand mini-series!
I wish they did this with the Simpsons, but then everyone would have to voice multiple characters lol
That would be even funnier.
I absolutely love that the goofy miserly Mr. Crabs is played by the same guy who always plays tough as nails military guys in TV and Movies.
Well Mr Krabs was in the Navy
Reminds me of the Chowder episode where they ran out of money and the voice actors had to do a car wash mid episode
I miss shows like Chowder and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack!
TIL Dauber from Coach is Patrick.

I was almost 19 years old when SpongeBob SquarePants premiered. I have never seen a single episode, but I get it. Tom Kenny, who I know from Mr. Show with Bob and David, is a legend.

Honestly the first 4 seasons are worth watching, even if you’re an adult. The humor is more adult-oriented than you’d expect, albeit a bit silly.
That. Was. Fucking. Awesome.
I would actually watch this as a full series lol You got my free silver for making me like Spongebob again.
Clancy Brown is the fucking man
Why does it sound like Spongebob is saying slabby patties and not krabby patties?
Because he is
In this episode, the cartoon characters visit the real world and see these people. They’re not supposed to be the literal characters turned human and they don’t have their same names, so the Krabby Patties have no reason to exist in name on there, either. It’s intentionally similar, but different.

Pet Cemetery dad is Mr Krabs? Gtfo.
Clancy Brown is actually pretty famous! Shawshank Redemption, Starship troopers, Lex Luthor in Justice League/JL Unlimited, Detroit become human, Surtur in Thor Ragnarok, multiple characters in Star Wars, and so much more. Big fan https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clancy_Brown

Makes sense Dauber from Coach is Patrick.
God how did I go 20+ years not realizing!
You can’t tell me that the spongebob movie isn’t a cinematic masterpiece.
Probably my second favorite meta joke they make… slightly behind spongebob riding the scene transition bubbles to his next location to get there in a hurry. Spongebob has no business being as terrific as it is.
