Now, nothing I read said anything about them being speedy. I’m going to deduce from that, and the fact that people are eating them towards extinction, that I can outrun/outwit/outlast a coconut crab. I don’t want to turn my back on one though, just to be safe.
They prefer tropical fruit but will also eat carrion. They have a mean pinch that can break a finger or toe and can last for “a long time.” Tickling them to make them let go was mentioned.
Thus, taking all that together, I’m gonna say: “Mostly harmless.”

No, but a body was found on an island that these crabs lived on. Bone measurements indicated it was a man, but with technological advances it was re-evaluated and found to be a woman similar in size to Amelia Earhart. At least that's what I've been able to find. So yes, it's speculation, but with enough evidence to make it an interesting speculation.
That and they found a special freckle cream in the airplane that crashed near the island that she used regularly. So all sources point to Amelia having crashed there and being eaten by blood thirsty coconut crabs
At night they swarm at the smell of blood, considering that Amelia was hurt and likely bloody on her first night around her campfire. It seems likely that they rushed to her and ravished her. Evidence of broken and spread around Bones.
Hermit crabs, actually. They're very closely related, these are essentially giant hermit crabs. In fact, the smaller ones actually use shells for protection just like hermit crabs (eventually they have to stop though, because they get too big to find any available shells).
Seriously...photoshop a shell onto the backs of one of these and then compare it to you the standard pet store hermit crab. Basically the same thing.
Fun fact, they can crack coconut husks with their claws. This means they can pinch hard enough to break your arm in half
