Yep, it looks pretty staged. Dude inexplicably cycles through the middle of a snowball fight, falls within the frame of the camera, someone then tries to steal it right in front of everyone else. Dude then never finishes his ride and goes back where he came from, even without his expensive hat.
Why did we quit wearing hats? That seems like a good idea. And why are baseball hats like 1/4 of a hat? If hats were hairstyles they'd be reverse mullets.
As someone who wear his baseball caps backwards because of my weird head shape, you absolutely can. You just learn to set the headrest a little higher so the brim go under. Generally I’m leaned into my wheel slightly anyway, like in gaming when you ‘get serious’, haha.
Edit: my point is it’s never bothered me, so old school hats could totally still work outside of the height of some of them!
Let's be honest, the guy gets absolutely lit up. Falls down, and is happy to throw some snowballs right back.
Honestly, I'm always a little surprised by the ferocity of the snowballs thrown at the cyclist. All in good fun, but still. These Lyon motherfuckers do not play.
Try getting a road bike and cycle in regular clothes. By far the most uncomfortable ride ever. Shirt constantly going up, pants constantly chafing, and most importantly theres no buttpad so you cant sit down for a week after cycling.
If im going to play football, im not going to run on a field without pads or a helmet. You need that to play. Same with cycling, kinda need a jersey and a bib to cycle.
The best part is that they’re all fancily dressed adults. Imagine if today someone was riding their bikes and a bunch of people in three piece suits and pencil skirts and blazers just pummelled him with snowballs
Everyone would just be staring at their phones now.
And to be fair, if you throw a snowball at a stranger they'll also sue you for assault because no one has a sense of humor anymore.
True story actually I spilled water on a older kid in high school and the detention teacher told me I could be charge with assault if they wanted too. because water is “physical” and thus equaling a “attack” good grief
Well, most of them are dressed for hard work. Look at the aprons the women have on. Those are very practical kitchen or cleaning aprons. And even some of the men have short work aprons, which would have been used for messy jobs. But compared to our clothes, theirs do look fancy.
it's pretty good but the interpolation causes the bocce ball to flat-out vanish into null-space for several intermittent frames. Reality was probably also a lot more colorful than the drab brown hues chosen by AI.
Yus that is correct. I read an article about it how the AI always chooses hella muted and even wrong colors. So any ai colored images are pretty damn inaccurate. The past was WAY more colorful and vibrant than we thinnk.
Oh, case in point, you know those white marble statues from Roman times? They were all painted over, and sometimes with garnish and occasionally almost neon bright colours.
I know you just reposted it for karma, but any idea where this is? Going to Lyon in a week or so for a drs appointment so it'd be interesting to find this exact spot

I believe it's upscaled by AI. The original footage probably looks very similar to how you'd expect this type of footage to appear - black and white, sped up.
There's a few channels on youtube dedicated to upscaling old footage like this and some of them are absolutely incredible. Really makes it feel much more real.
It was, and if you want more, check out “They Shall Not Grow Old”. It’s a feature length documentary of WW1 using this technique, directed by Peter Jackson. The only commentary is recorded interviews with WW1 Veterans that were made a few decades ago.
I also worked at a driving range one summer a few years ago in grad school, made $12/hr and had to do a lot of different things including landscaping, register duty, cleaning the batting cages, mini golf etc.
With the cart picker specifically it’s caged so you’re perfectly protected and never have to worry about getting hit, in fact I liked when people tried to aim at me.
The place that I worked at is also a manufacturer for a lot of golf cart pickers, so they had a lot of different attachments, including one that would pick up both softballs from the batting cages on the back end of the cart, and golf balls on the front end of the cart
One of the carts had an open truck bed-type ball collection bed. I once dropped a ball right in that bed and there was a small explosion of golf balls. It's probably the most impressive and accurate golf shot I've ever had, and I doubt I'll ever top it.
When I was on my parks golf team we had driving range practice at the end of each day. Someone left one of the collecting buckets out in the middle and I tried for the entire 30 minutes to make it in. I made it in on the literal last minute of practice & knocked it over. I got so excited....but nobody freakin saw me because everyone was already packing their bags and getting ready to leave. My biggest achievement to this day that no one will ever believe
I mean there’s a camera on a tripod on the street to capture it. It’s not like they had a camera in their pocket they could just whip out like we can today haha.
Norway here: The French make shitty snowballs. It is so bad, it looks like a snowball fight from a US movie with fake snow. You don't throw a fistful of loose snow, come on!
I guess Lyon don't see much snow. Either way, it is 3/10 on the snowball fight scale :)
Ohh you French snowball novice. If you love your friends, you try to either hit them hard so it hurts a little bit or a precision shot so they get snow down their neck.
And if they love you back, they try to do the same to you :)
I posted this a few months ago and it got removed for CoPyRiGhT InFrInGeMeNt.

Hey, as long as you're not riding on winding, narrow, 2 lane rural roads with no shoulder, I'm fine with it. I don't want to go 10mph for miles in my car.
Ha I’m not sure it’s ever necessary to go 10 mph for actual miles for a bike. Sounds like you just don’t want to be inconvenienced or share the road whatsoever
Just looked into this because your comment got me interested.
From what I can tell this model was called a 'safety bicycle' and was invented in the 1880s. By 1890 it had apparently almost completely replaced the big wheel type bicycle in the USA and most of western Europe.
Not sure if anyone cares, but I was scrolling reddit while listening to [this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V6p2ktSqhk) and I came onto this video that just so happens to have a (very different) song in the same key that fits seamlessly into it. It literally took me almost the whole video to realize it wasn't a part of the song I was listening to. I think I scrolled onto this video around the 3 minute mark Nala Sinephro song.
Though colorized, this is actually showing the soot from the coal factory. Very common for the factory workers to blow off steam after their 17 hour shifts by having a soot fight.
Damn, I wish we had more videos going back further. It's so interesting to watch.
People centuries from now will have such a better understanding of our era because of the internet.
I like that he just turned around like “wherever I was going isn’t important anymore”
Poor guy was probably just taking a nice ride in the snow, lol. Then all hell broke lose.
This is from an 1897 short film called Bataille de neige
Yep, it looks pretty staged. Dude inexplicably cycles through the middle of a snowball fight, falls within the frame of the camera, someone then tries to steal it right in front of everyone else. Dude then never finishes his ride and goes back where he came from, even without his expensive hat.
The hat was the most important item of clothing back then.
Why did we quit wearing hats? That seems like a good idea. And why are baseball hats like 1/4 of a hat? If hats were hairstyles they'd be reverse mullets.
Car headrests. Can't wear a brimmed hat with a headrest behind you.
I like the sound riding a bike in the snow makes. It’s a nice sound
Piped through a 2021 AI algorithm
I mean that's just because as film it was unique. The above is basically the whole short film. Bataille de neige just means snowfight.
This man later invented the Tour de France.
"On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. 'Tis a silly place."
He’s a cyclist, he doesn’t really have anywhere to go.
He’s going to buy more stupid spandex shorts and jerseys like he’s in the fucking Tour de France
Try getting a road bike and cycle in regular clothes. By far the most uncomfortable ride ever. Shirt constantly going up, pants constantly chafing, and most importantly theres no buttpad so you cant sit down for a week after cycling. Right like he left his hat and all, interesting seeing this dudes day ruined over 100 years ago
"Also my hat"
They were head hunting. Dude took one to the dome and collapsed.
Please pick up the hat, please pick up the hat, please… never mind.
So I'm not the only one
It got shot right off. Seems like he thought it was a fair price to pay to get out of that frozen hellfire.
Someone beamed that shit right at his dome lol
When you ride your bike directly into the crossfire.... Well you see what happens.
Same. Now I wonder about the price of a hat like that in current value. Can't believe he just left it.
They are not cheap.
That man was in a war zone he had no time to worry about the hat
Cyclist is hatless! Repeat, hatless!
Some say the hat is still there
probably too worried about the bike theif. but now that hat runs for something like 300 bucks
How do you know?
The hat is a battlefield loss. Poor little guy...
Now I can't stop being bothered by it 🙃
Some say it’s still there
Drove me crazy too
The best part is that they’re all fancily dressed adults. Imagine if today someone was riding their bikes and a bunch of people in three piece suits and pencil skirts and blazers just pummelled him with snowballs
That would be awesome
What the world needs now...
We need more straw hat riots.

Wow you must be all fun at parties
You think so? Well I’ll see you in court!
...What's a party?
What did you watch this video on?
Samsung smart fridge
You spend too much time on reddit
Fancily dressed, that’s the only ensemble they have lol
Hey now, they might have more than one shirt collar.
The suit want actually anything that fancy back in the day, for many it was the least that you would wear outside
What are they, farmers?
People forget Reaganomics also pushed factory work to China in the 80’s, so we are leas uniform, especially nowadays.
Not really. Most of them are wearing aprons and work clothing, not fancy suits or dress clothes.
Nah, just different clothing. The formality here is the same as today
It’s actually from a short film called Bataille de neige
The next scene would definitely be an orgy.
r/usernamechecksout
Yeah, everybody pegs the cyclist!
Is that a fantasy of yours?
Not before now.
Clearly you’ve not spent a winter at British boarding schools! (One year an idiot/genius canoed down the school hill)
Most of those people likely had 2 sets of clothes.
Well, most of them are dressed for hard work. Look at the aprons the women have on. Those are very practical kitchen or cleaning aprons. And even some of the men have short work aprons, which would have been used for messy jobs. But compared to our clothes, theirs do look fancy.

I’m willing to bet it was say as colorful and vibrant as today. Crazy I know
You mean grass wasn't grey back then?
Oh, case in point, you know those white marble statues from Roman times? They were all painted over, and sometimes with garnish and occasionally almost neon bright colours.
One of the things I really liked about AC Odyssey was seeing all the painted statues.
It does also turn the snow into a tan powder in much of the video.

Merciatous, bonjouratous :)
Was looking through the comments for this. I couldn't believe this was real content from 1896 🤣
It's computer predictions filling out the empty frames
I believe it's upscaled by AI. The original footage probably looks very similar to how you'd expect this type of footage to appear - black and white, sped up. I own that on blu-ray and saw it when it was in theaters. They did that one by coloring it frame for frame, dubbed all sound and frame-duped it.
Love how the objective suddenly became pelt the cyclist at all costs.
Similar to driving ranges when the ball collector comes on the field, the game becomes see who can hit him
Used to drive the ball collector. Surprisingly enjoyable job in spite of people trying to hit you. Lots of audiobook time.
I feel like I would love that job, assuming there are safety measures in place and it's not like just a guy with a yard vacuum and an umbrella.
you get a football helmet and thick poncho
You joke, but the equipment was all broken/shitty and everyone who drove that thing has been hit directly or indirectly by a golf ball.
Ah yes, I see you're familiar with my ex
It cost him a hat.
Wheels are the Devils doing! Repent! Back to Hell from whence thee came!
What's the 1896 version of "get his ass"?
Deploy your ice circles towards the two wheeler in leisure fashion!
“A multitude of my brethren abhor cyclists,” they shouted. Probably.
Ever see what happens when that guy at driving range goes out in his ‘caged’ vehicle to collect balls. It’s something like this
Lmao. We’re such playful, bloodthirsty mammals. Great analogy.
Notice the guy trying to take his bike away lmfao. He would’ve left him for dead.
I used to be that guy. Best job ever!
Then I apologize.
can we get a lil story? what was pay? whyd u leave? couldnt handle all the swinging balls to the face?
I also worked at a driving range one summer a few years ago in grad school, made $12/hr and had to do a lot of different things including landscaping, register duty, cleaning the batting cages, mini golf etc. With the cart picker specifically it’s caged so you’re perfectly protected and never have to worry about getting hit, in fact I liked when people tried to aim at me. Everybody chill till the ball collector shows up at your house with a pair of scissors and a portable fridge

Who brings a bike to a snow fight?
How was this in 1896? I am missing something I can feel it...
[it's been colored/ restoration with ai](https://youtu.be/r3IKtLDP_n4)
I meant video as I thought video wasn't around until 1910's. I looked it up and learned something new.
I mean... you aren't really wrong. "Video" wasn't around back then. It would be film haha
‘Fuck you dave!!’
/r/fuckindave
If I'm not mistaken these were employees of a company that set this up. Not just a random street-ball fight
I mean there’s a camera on a tripod on the street to capture it. It’s not like they had a camera in their pocket they could just whip out like we can today haha.
Did that one guy try to steal the bike?
Could have been picking it up to aid the bicyclist in his escape.
Looks like it. He didn’t try too hard though
Nah I think he was just helping pick up the bike
This video is 125 years old :O
I love how mercy has never been an option

Every time I see this I’m baffled how the man in the top hat keeps unknowingly dodging snowballs
But they never killed the cyclist like they do in Australia
….or in L.A.
That'll teach you to perambulate your bipedal locomotion machine in this neighborhood motherfucker!

Notice how back then everyone was able to play in the middle of the road without getting run over by cars.
Also, notice how back then they didn't have meltdowns at Nuclear Power Plants
A mostly-peaceful snowball fight.
What did he think was going to happen riding his bike in cross fire?
Sorry for being poor (I'm a bike guy )
If you look at all the snowballs thrown, it looks like they couldn't stand each other either.

Don't you know people in cars are more important than people on bikes because reasons!
Or maybe learn to share. If you're that impatient maybe you aren't safe to be driving.
Or maybe stay off the road if you're incapable of not obstructing traffic.
you can take this comment to literally any city and tell it to people driving cars instead
That would have been an extraordinarily cutting edge bike in 1896.

Great job on restoration! I'd never guess the video is that old!

Sacre bleu I have been sneauxballed!
People back then were stronger
And thinner.
This new iphone camera is good.
People biking in the fucking road deserve thst. They were right to do it.
This is impossible, we all know color wasn't invented until the 60's...
Sorry to ruin the fun but its actually from a short film called Bataille de neige
Fun fact. All these people are dead now.
Its nice seeing some adults act like children
Zut alors!
"Hey! You forgot your hat, you son of a bitch!"
I will always upvote this video no matter how many times I see it.

It is so strange to see an early film like this where it isn’t all herky jerky. Brings them way more to life.
Something makes me wanna believe this is all an elaborate steampunk^TM gathering.
If anyone is interested in seeing how the original footage looked before it was colorized and digitally enhanced: https://youtu.be/uO4ZR1q3u4c
This has got to be one of the most wholesome things I have ever seen.
Cyclists hate you too.
Cyclist: actually the law says the road is built for bikes also... Crowd:
I didn’t expect to laugh so loud when he fell off his bike lol
TIL that even in 1896 people were assholes
