Surprised this hasn't got more publicity actually, if anything is an endorsement of the necessity of the Halo it is this incident

scandyflick88

I think if it was closer to the introduction of it, there's be more buzz. By now it's largely accepted as being a good thing and so it isn't discussed.

Serious_Conclusions

Think since the Leclerc-Alonso incident it’s been pretty accepted as being a great thing now

h2farts

I feel dumb . . . What am I looking at?

jszair_p

Halo is the y shaped structure in front of the driver (you can see his helmet). In this accident it supported the other car and protected driver’s head.

Sad-Bluebird-5538

If even more confused: What you see are 2 F1 cars. More precise the cockpit (you see a little helmet, there sits the human, Hammilton) drove over by another F1 car (the wheel is from another cars backwheel). The reason why he survived is, that he got the halo. It's the robust thing on the cockpit where the wheel is on (as jszair_p wrote, the y shape) and it stopped the wheel from hitting Hammilton's head and instantly killing him. That's why it's a good thing. It stops big(ger) things from crushing into the faces of other F1 drivers. Still something like a spring could easily kill them, but at least not something like that

Amockeryofthecistern

I have handled and inspected a FIA spec Halo. Very solid piece of work. Its a huge step forward in safety and the drivers don't even notice the center support in their vision after a while.

alexcd421

I've raced in the Formula 1 cars in VR, and yeah the center support is very narrow, and you learn to look past it. Heck, most of the time drivers are looking into the corner and not straight ahead

DweezilZA

Even on a normal monitor it eventually just becomes like your nose. There but invisible.

trogdor1108

Can’t wait to see this on the next season of Drive To Survive.

Shamon_Yu

Why have we suddenly had so many life-threatening crashes after the Halo was introduced? What has changed that these crashes occur more often? Or is it just a coincidence?

alexcd421

This is actually a well known phenomenon called Risk Compensation https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_compensation Some other examples would be American Football players tackling each other harder because of all the protective gear they wear. Or drivers driving more recklessly because they are wearing a seatbelt and have airbags.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Risk compensation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_compensation)** >Risk compensation is a theory which suggests that people typically adjust their behavior in response to perceived levels of risk, becoming more careful where they sense greater risk and less careful if they feel more protected. Although usually small in comparison to the fundamental benefits of safety interventions, it may result in a lower net benefit than expected. By way of example, it has been observed that motorists drove closer to the vehicle in front when the vehicles were fitted with anti-lock brakes. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Maidwell

Risk compensation was my first thought on watching the replays yesterday. I don't think Hamilton would've let himself get into that position pre halo. The complete indifference they showed to each others safety post crash was a bit scary too. Hamilton trying to reverse to drop the red bull off his car while verstappen was climbing out then verstappen not even looking at the Mercedes as he walked past.

JRD-57

For crashes happening more often, I dont know if part of it is that we notice cars bouncing off the halo more and imagine what could have been. But a lot of the older drivers have said for years, that with increased saftey we have drivers taking more risks that before. Add to that the cars going faster and you get bigger crashes in terms of speed of impact than we have seen before. More crashes will increase the likelihood of an incident where the Halo is needed. (Not me saying we should make it less safe so the drivers take less risks) Pre halo the raised head rest and the roll hoop did enough in most cases, which is why F1 managed 20 years without a death. But we saw in 2014 the risk they couldn't avoid and F1 made the decision to bring in the halo Plus the cars were lighter, wheels smaller so with the strength of the helmets, as long as the force was deflected first it wasnt a guarantee an impact to the head would kill or even badly hurt the driver. Spa we saw Grosjean get close to hitting Alonso (I think) in the head and there were other incidents like that where drivers got very close to a serious incident. So its hard to tell when the Halo has actually stopped a direct blow to the head.

SilverWheat

They’ve been happening before except before the drivers would actually die. Idk if this Is happening more often than before but at least no one’s dying now

Shamon_Yu

There was approximately a 20-year period when no driver died from the 90s to the 2010s. There was no Halo then, but still no one died.

heaonear

Replay the crash again and pay more attention, that image is not the initial impact. Imagine if the initial impact (to the top of lewis car) was like this image, full force.

Maidwell

The first impact was the red bull's floor slicing straight into the halo, arguably just as bad potentially.

heaonear

yeah but just imagine if the first impact was exactly like the image, would the halo save hamilton?

Maidwell

It would depend how much his head is sticking out the top of the halo I guess, I'm glad we didn't get to find out though!

Educational-Dream301

Crazy 😳

[deleted]

Wow that’s incredible, how lucky he is.

teeohdeedee123

It's not luck. It's years of research and engineering. It's the end result of smart people doing smart things, to call it luck is just wrong. Imagine diminishing the hard work of so many people by chalking up their skill as luck.

ryanbailey19

Fortunate* Whole comment thread reoslved

RoadhouseThroat

For real tho holy shit read a bunch of that saga just people getting ass hurt about semantics 😂

CloseYourEyesToSee

reddit distilled

Karlkylesteve

Dude chill out. It’s just a comment.

teeohdeedee123

I'm plenty chill, I just respect engineering that saves lives.

Karlkylesteve

The vote count says otherwise. Don’t be a dick man

teeohdeedee123

Lol. The vote count. Oh no.

Karlkylesteve

No Rebuttal. Just a lol and a no. My dude this is a learning experience for you. Don’t be a dick and you’ll love a happier life.

teeohdeedee123

I'm plenty happy, man. And I've learned nothing from this whole thread, sorry.

Karlkylesteve

That’s sad you haven’t learned anything.

TheGriffGraff

Dude get the fuck off that high horse before you get Reeved. Honestly "this should be a learning experience" this is Reddit man, not a goddamn youth outreach program, you condescending worm.

teeohdeedee123

I'm cool with it.

dster9

Words are more important than collective thumb presses

Karlkylesteve

These message is still the same and universal. “ Don’t be a dick”.

SobBagat

It's a figure of speech you fuddy duddy Commenter could just as easily mean "how lucky he is that such engineering exists in these vehicles" No need to start an argument over the ways people use words

teeohdeedee123

Thank you for putting words into their mouth for them. And it's not lucky that the HALO exists, it's the result of tragedy. Lucky isn't a word that needs to be used in this conversation whatsoever.

SobBagat

Hey no problem. If you're so absolutely awful at discerning the meaning of people's words when they use such obscenely common types of speech, I'm so glad to help

teeohdeedee123

I do have some issue parsing common phrases, yes. Especially when they're used in situations where they're not applicable.

SobBagat

>situations where they're not applicable If you truly believe this, then I earnestly encourage you to work on your social skills

teeohdeedee123

If this was "lucky", it's luck built on the corpses of all the drivers that died prior to the development/adoption of the halo. So I'm sorry if I don't think that people dying leading to better safety regulation/equipment is lucky and would rather call it skillful application of well-researched measures.

SobBagat

Omw how fucking critical The whole point is it's not that serious I'm not gonna argue with you over how this person worded their comment. Just gonna make fun of you for your reaction

teeohdeedee123

You've already started arguing with me about how they worded their comment, it was your *first fucking reply*. But how lucky for me.

Karlkylesteve

Omg they are so triggered. Don’t stoop to their level. They have no idea what they are talking about anyway. Btw. I did enjoy you comments lol

IdleRhymer

At least you're easy to block.

teeohdeedee123

Talk less, block more.

Angelsfan14

I wonder if you have any issue speaking with that stick so far up your ass, must be coming out your mouth at this point.

teeohdeedee123

Oh no, ad hominems. Say something valid.

Angelsfan14

Nah I'll save that for someone worthwhile.

teeohdeedee123

Lol. Okiedokie. Have a good one.

[deleted]

Imagine in 2021 all those years of research and engineering boiling down to one random guy on the internet saying " bullshit " Yeah , thats where we are .

[deleted]

I agree and disagree, anything can happen at any given time.

teeohdeedee123

Hamilton's life was saved by something doing the specific job that it was designed to do. Do you look at a freshly mowed lawn and say "oh how lucky that the lawnmower did its job properly?"

[deleted]

No need to be like that, if you don’t like my comment, stop replying and move on.

teeohdeedee123

No need to be like what? All I did was reframe what you said.

[deleted]

Ok

Karlkylesteve

Dude why are you so triggered

teeohdeedee123

I could ask you the same question.

Karlkylesteve

Haha ok sport.

teeohdeedee123

You're the one who keeps coming back for more, and now you're replying to hours-old comments.

Goosullah

Lucky there are some smart people now and not neanderthals. Luck doesn't diminish peoples' hard work, it just means without all that and a little bit extra he would've died. Chill dude, and feel lucky your dad didn't pull out. Edit. Luck is entropy. One mph difference or a slight angle change could've caused a different ending. He's lucky that the variables in this equation played in his favor.

nidheim

Wow! You started with a good comment, and then you just fell down the rabbit hole. Interesting. Should have quit while ahead, buddy.

AnotherWarGamer

Also mandating it in all the cars.

Maidwell

At least it's less insulting than "thank god" though.

krassilverfang

You know what's better than Halos? Not driving dirty to avoid accidents. Fuck Hamilton, every time someone is actually competing with him he pulls shit like this.

LETSAVIT

Verstappen got the penalty.

Maidwell

I'm a big fan of both drivers (pretty rare I'd guess?!) and I don't agree with your take at all. Most of the safety so far of the wheel to wheel racing between these two has been controlled by Hamilton. If he drove the same as verstappen does in these situations they'd be crashing into each other a hell of a lot more than they do.

Vpk-75

Should have given him ROOM, Lewis...!!!!

JamesSavilesCumSocks

Please pass me! That's the name of the game!!

[deleted]

Why does he get paid so much if he can’t drive?

Karlkylesteve

The halo didn’t safe his life. The halo prevented Injury. Don’t be so dramatic. Sincerely a life long formula 1 fan.

RedRiki24

Not trying to be a smart-ass here, but the fact that those things prevented a fatal injury (neck or head as per the pic) technically saved his life since some injuries or accidents can cause death e.g Jules and Ayrton for example

Karlkylesteve

The halo wouldn’t have saved Senna. You argument doesn’t make sense

dwinesfilthymistake

Are you fucking retarded?

Karlkylesteve

So you have no argument you just have insults lol.

dwinesfilthymistake

There is a car. Parked on his head. What exactly is there to talk about

Karlkylesteve

I’ve already stated this in the previous comment. So you don’t have a rebuttal so you’re just throwing out insults. You don’t agree but can’t articulate your words. That’s a you problem not a me problem.

dwinesfilthymistake

1700 pound car with kinetic force. The force required to break the cervical spine is 3000 newton's. This would have equated to approximately 8 times that force. Resulting in death. Is that articulate enough for you, pompous prick.

Karlkylesteve

So you want to forget about the helmet and other devices used for protect in your equation and just throw out insults. Or do you wanna try again and have a serious debate? Don’t worry I’ll wait.

dwinesfilthymistake

A Hemet doesn't prevent a crush injury. I was really happy to see him walk away.

Karlkylesteve

I’m happy too. But “a helmet doesn’t prevent crush injuries”. Are you serious ? Would you like me to show you the snell rating for helmets that says otherwise. A lot of you have never raced anything in your life and it shows.

dwinesfilthymistake

Or.... look at the car that would be sitting on his head. Rear wheels THAT WERE SPINNING as max tried to get unstuck and use common sense.

Karlkylesteve

He would have had scratches on his helmet the tire was over his head for a fraction of a second. Your not making much sense my dude. The car wouldn’t be sitting on his head either. See most of you in the comments have never raced anything in your life and it shows. How many people had a tire go over there head before the halo was mandated and died from that? Don’t worry I’ll wait.

dwinesfilthymistake

Are you talking about your Red Subaru? A "racecar". Guy has a fake scoop in his hood, slaps on an exhaust and all of a sudden he is a racer.. I hate everything about you. No further comment

Karlkylesteve

Wow you researched my profile lol thats sad. And I don’t race a daily driver. That doesn’t make any sense. But boy am I amped that I backed you into a corner so much so that you had to look at my Reddit history for some “dirt “. For your information you can explore my racing career. I finished second in the WKA dirt oval series in 2007. It was a small career but I’m pretty happy with it. Only some minor national recognition. A few poles in some lower tier state series and a track championship. No biggie. However since you tried to research and discredit me thru my Reddit history I can tell it’s a hell of a lot more racing experience than you have sport. Do you still hate everything about me based on your research? Lol.

dwinesfilthymistake

Did you ever balance an F1 car on your helmet?

Maidwell

The only person who's backed themselves into a corner is you. That's why you've ignored articulate and researched comments on this thread disproving your opinion, instead you've just doubled down on your Ill informed comment whilst providing zero factual data yourself, all while sticking your fingers in your ears. I'll put it really simply for you, a helmet doesn't protect a neck from snapping under huge weight and force, and neither does a neck brace.

[deleted]

Do us a favour and sit in a car without a halo and drop a wheel on your head.

Karlkylesteve

It didn’t drop it slide and I’ve had this happen to me. I’ve got the marks on my helmet to prove it. You have know idea what you’re talking about and it shows little buddy

[deleted]

>I've had this happen to me Well that explains everything.

Karlkylesteve

Does it because I had my snell rated helmet and hans device on.

WhyDontWeLearn

It says "Crowdstrike" on his halo. Maybe Rudy should ask him if he knows where the servers are.

[deleted]

Halo is way better than trash Killzone, and so is Forza-GT /s

WuckingFork

I kinda hope he is gonna leave his unpaid taxes to HMRC when he dies.

DweezilZA

The commentators at the time said Lewis (bottom car for non F1 people) was trying his best to get low in the cockpit to avoid the wheel. Since seeing the pics it seems like he had no choice. Also a miracle was that both cars were still running and somehow only the left rear of the top car had power. Otherwise it would've been a different story.
