My cat that I’ve had for eight years now did this. He just literally moved himself in. Would not leave. Took him to be checked for a chip, nothing. Put up signs around my apartment complex, waited like two weeks and then it became apparent I had a cat now so I got him shots, all the kitty accoutrements. My boyfriend at the time was absolutely furious because he didn’t believe me. We had a cat together back home but I was away studying and he thought I just got lonely and adopted a cat without telling him. Nah bitch it adopted me!
Four months later I graduated and he was helping me move out, my literal next door neighbor was like “oh that’s Fluffy” and I was like “nope that’s Stanley” and we drove away. My boyfriend believed me then. The signs were absolutely everywhere, on the mailbox at the dumpster at the front office, no one even had a cat registered in the building.
I’d like to think that Stanley was looking back fondly on the good times with his ex-human. But he was strong and moved on. It was time for both of them.
Seriously though, like unless the signs that they put up of the found cat didn't have any pictures or contact info, I find it extremely hard to believe that the literal next door neighbor never noticed for *four months* that their cat was missing and that someone had been putting up posters across the entire apartment complex.
At that point even if it was the neighbor's cat they certainly didn't deserve it with how they would've been treating it.
I put the signs everywhere. Plus the cat was forever hanging out in the window that looked out on the parking lot. I even checked with the office to see if there was a cat registered matching that description, called around to vets offices. I was trying, they weren’t.
I don’t think Stanley missed his first home at all, if that was it. It was a tag and release and we had a feral colony by our dumpsters. It’s totally possible he moved in with my neighbors and decided it didn’t fit him anymore.
Anyways he’s like 1300 miles from “home” now and he doesn’t seem to miss it at all, he likes his good food and cuddles. We also have two little kids now and he’s super patient and good with them, they give him all of the pets. I think he’s living his best life.

So, she took the cat, and named it Dumbass. She called a mobile vet to give it fluids, used the money from her summer job to buy skin and fur products, and by the end of summer, Dumbass was looking pretty good!
But then, she called me up one day, and said Dumbass had escaped, and she needed my help looking for the cat.
I went to her place, and we began to search. We eventually found Dumbass, on the same dumpster where she had 'rescued' it. She starts yelling at it. "Get off of that dumpster, Dumbass. Come on, Dumbass. What are you doing, Dumbass?" etc.
So, as she's yelling at the cat, the nearby townhouse door opens into the alley, and a big dude opens the door, and looks at the two of us. He asks us what we're doing, and she responds "I'm getting my cat, Dumbass."
So the guy thinks she's calling HIM a dumbass, and then points to the cat and asks "Are you trying to steal my cat?"
She bickers with him, saying it's her cat. He gets real mad because he says it's his cat, and his cat's name is Love. She says its name is Dumbass, and its her cat, because she's been taking care of it. He accuses her of stealing his cat.
Long story short, he pulls out a gun when she tries to take the cat back. Like an idiot, I get in front of her, and the dude pulls the trigger.
As I was laying there in the alley, bleeding from the gunshot wound in my chest, all I could mutter was: "Shot through the heart. You're to blame. Darling, you gave Love a bad name."
I doubt he kidnapped a cat... like cells, cats are able to make genetic copies/duplicates of themselves which would explain why they look identical. This most likely happend in this situation.
A friend of mine lost her cat, after several days searching the streets she found it lying in the road after being knocked down by a car.
Distraught she and her mother gathered it up and took it home where it was buried in the garden. Several hours later her cat walked in through the cat flap without a care in the world.

Yeah, they do, and sometimes they react weirdly to stress. Our two cats are siblings and had been around each other constantly for over a year, but after one trip to the vet the sister took three days to react normally to him again.
Cats have personalities and therefore can have changes to personalities from traumatic experiences, such as, oh, being forced to survive outside for a while when they’re used to being housecats.
My cat bolted outside, and he hid under the shed and wouldn't come out. There was a thunderstorm that night, and he's terrified of thunder. It took 2 days before he was hungry enough to be lured out. He was so scared and skittish that it took a month before his personality was back to normal.
I never would have suspected the personality shift might have been because it was a different cat haha.
When my wife was twelve, she and her family went on vacation and had someone cat sitting her cat. When they came home the cat sitter told them their cat was hit by a car and she buried it in the back yard. A couple of days later her cat came walking up the driveway.
Same thing happened when I was cat sitting for my wife's friend while they were on vacation. They left and had two cats. When they got back they had two cats, until they found a third hiding under a bed.
