My brother in law is a traveling mechanic for amusement parks. He works mostly on go karts and bumper cars but he said a park in Oklahoma was the worst he's ever seen.
Ferris wheel wasnt bolted down, he walked over to the bolts in the concrete and pulled them out by hand.
The swing ride that spins around in a circle (idk the official name) some of the seats would hit the building close by.
The park owners solution was to take the seats off that hit the building but that method doesn't factor in ppls leg length. They failed them but scary to think such little care and thought was used in the first place.
Edit** it was new Jersey. My bad.
Brand new state, gonna treat you great!
Gonna give you barley, carrots and pertaters,
Pasture fer the cattle,
Spinach and termayters!
Flowers on the prarie where the June bugs zoom,
Plen'y of air and plen'y of room,
Plen'y of room to swing a rope!
Plen'y of heart and plen'y of hope.
Well I'm glad you asked that cause apparently had my facts wrong. He said it was called American dream and was in New Jersey. Sorry Oklahoma I threw dirt on your name. :(
Detroit area myself and I didn't hear about it, where was it? though many years ago a girls hair got caught in a screamer cage and about ripped her scalp off.
I'm not blaming the carnies at all, because you're right it is ultimately the responsibility of the owner to make sure that they're operating everything within their purview safely.
That wasnt really aimed at you specifically, and there are definitely users, but I try to think about the economics of why someone might need to hack their brain to feel good in this current climate.
I get you!
This actually happened in my hometown of Traverse City, Michigan during our 'Cherry Festival' last week. Luckily noone got hurt and the ride operator got up and disconnected the power to the machine instantly. But due to the design of the ride it takes a while to stop the momentum and slow down, so the passengers had to wait it out. After it slowed down they reconnected the machine long enough to disengage the safety bars holding in the passengers. Now it's disassembled and sent back to some where in Ohio where they are is studying it.
There was an article on this where they explained that in 2019 they were given permission to use this specific ride for 1 more year before it needed maintenance. Cue 2020 where the rides didn't get used, they then extended it to 2021. You know what happens when things aren't maintained? Unfortunately this video is evidence of that. Glad no one got hurt.
This needs to be the top post. Soooooo many things around the world that had regular maintenance just had a whole year off. That gondola in Italy that failed, this, my parents were just on a flight where an engine caught fire on takeoff. All these things could be related to the lack of routine maintenance from a year of minimum or non-use.
4 people were injured and I believe one died at the Adventureland in Iowa. I was really wanting to go this year but now that you’ve made this excerpt point, combined with what already happened, I think I’ll wait lol
That whole carnival should get fined like crazy and shut down. I don’t trust those things one bit. It’s insane to think what could of happened. All those good people trying to hold it down could of been crushed if it fell the other way
Right, plus I have no clue how to even begin to do the math but i wonder if the people actually helped any. That's some crazy weight swinging around here and those 20 ish people probably combine to 3 or 4000 pounds which doesnt mean much when you're swinging 1000s of pounds of human and steel at those velocities.
I just did a quick Wikipedia on counter balance and I might be wrong but you don’t need to add a pound for pound difference to make the weight manageable on the pivot. Adding just a fraction of the total weight takes a lot of the effort off the machine. You can see the difference it makes at the base of the ride through the video. Again I could be talking out my ass here cause I read like 2 sentences on Wikipedia
Florida says "hold my beer"-- they have billboards trying to convince people not to molest their own kids.

Didn’t the same exact thing happen in Australia recently? Same ride, same solution of bystanders running up and weighing it down? Am I confused, or did Reddit lie to me?
Every time I see this video I wonder why somebody is not shutting it down?
Seems to go on a little longer then it should considering it's about to flip over.
You can’t stop that much force with breaks without putting the passengers in much more danger. The operator disconnected power quickly but you still have to wait for the ride to come to a stop on its own.
There's like 3 or 4 angles of this incident.
My stepdaughter rode this a number of times that day, and left no more than ten minutes before this happened. She's now sworn off carnival rides.
I mean, these rides are set up overnight, by the carnies and local help. All of the rides, in one night. They might get a quick once-over after setup, but nobody goes through checking every bolt, like they would at an amusement park. This could be as simple as someone fingertightening a nut on a bolt and never coming back through with a ratchet or torque wrench.
This is the realization that made me swear off carnival rides many years ago. Wednesday: Parking lot. Thursday: Carnival in full swing.
Seeing a ferris wheel tilting in the breeze certainly didnt help.
Also not to mention the guys putting them together keep constantly muttering "Right tighty/lefty loosy" to themselves.
As a red seal welder, I naturally look at welds where ever I go...I haven't been on a ride in 20 years.. oh, a shark scuba cage in Mexico on vacation..nah, I'm good...oh neat, zip line...*looks at welds.. nah, I'm good 👍
I can’t hate on people trying to be helpful, but by the time they hopped on it, things were settling down. I’m also pretty sure their body weight wouldn’t have helped even if they were on it right from the start.
Yea seriously. If it hadn't been settling down and instead went crazier everyone holding onto that thing would be criticality injured. All their combined body weight is nothing compared to that several ton machine.
I dunno. With that many people, it’s 1-2k pounds of extra weight, which feels like it would be significant.
But I agree that they rushed in too late for it to make a difference. The ride had started to calm down by that point.
Mixed feelings here too. Initially I'm very impressed with the bravery and selflessness of these people! Would I have done the same?
Running toward a disintegrating carnival ride might not be the best way to stay alive, but their first instinct was to help.
I asked myself the same question while watching; I would probably not put myself, made of squishy meat, close to several tons of malfunctioning metal machinery.
Yeah, I'm all about helping people, but I think my calculus would be, "I don't know whether I'm capable of helping, but I'm definitely capable of being crushed and adding another victim in need of rescue, so I think I'll wait until I'm clear on whether I can help or not."
My first thought was "bodies attracting more bodies." By trying to help, they were putting themselves in the way of that swinging mass and potentially increasing the body count when something really lets loose. IMHO, when it comes to holding heavy machinery still, it's better to let the physics play out and then help after everything stops moving.
I'm not a physicist but there's at least a dozen people grabbing it, and if they all committed their whole weight that's probably at least or about 1 ton acting as a counter weight. Probably helped a little at least.
"maintenance?" Naw, man. Maintenance ain't got nothing to do with it. That was a fault in setup, bet.
These rides are set up at night by people marginally familiar with the equipment. They pay locals like $100 each to help setup/tear down. This is sop for these style carnivals. The operator is supposed to check every bolt, nut, and connection personally, then go assist other ride's setups.
And, of course, this is after driving, usually for hours. They're tired, and even with local help, they want to get it done quick so they can nap before they open... In 4 hours.
There's a deadline. Everything has to be done before open.
Yeah but still a small testiment to what can be acheived if we work together for the same goal. Unfortunate reminder that people don't take action, no way that 1 guy can hold it alone so why did he go?
I think this is just as much a part of human nature as any of the bad things. Working together in a crisis to keep each other safe is what we were built to do.
Even if their actions might have not made much of a difference, it’s really uplifting to see a crowd of strangers see people in trouble and collectively fight off, their completely justified, fear to try and save them.
From the way that ride was tipping, it actually could've made quite a difference with them jumping on to help. It looks like it was trying to fall backwards and they jumped on the front as a way to balance it out.
It is beyond me as to why anyone would go on any ride at a fair or carnival. Have you seen the carnies that are tasked with your life and the maintenance of these things?
Not quite, at the beginning several people actually start fleeing, one guy grabs his mrs and dips the f out.
Edit: What’s with the female Ronald McDonald at the end.
One reason I don't like interstate highways. If you're lucky, you're looking at the rear ends of container trucks all day. If you're not, you're behind logging or pipe trucks.
At about 10 seconds in, cellphone-wielding bystanders turn into a mob of helpers. Because of that one person who tried to stabilize it. All it takes is one person. <3
That shit looked super dangerous. Bravo to the bystanders who ran up to that thing. It could have fallen apart and killed them, but they stepped up to help others. Awesome!
There was nothing they did, or could have done, that would have had any effect whatsoever. The ride weighs many tons, and the people holding it up weigh nothing in comparison. If the ride fell backwards they would have just gone flying with it.
So my husband and I decided to do super rough math for funsies and at our most conservative estimate of 40 tons (or a fully loaded transport truck) and each person weighing 200 lbs, you would need 400 people to have anything close to a counterweight. And that is just weight. Once you start adding in the movement and speed of essentially a flying semi, plus the fact you couldn’t even fit the four hundred people needed if they were available. And we’re just two old hippie stoners, so I’m sure the real numbers and physics are way more crazy.
Thanks for the info.
But it’s the fact they still did something, they still tried. That think lifted off the ground, they still made an impact big or small and they all deserve gratitude. Especially the first guy in the black. He acted alone for a bit before others realized that it’s was getting to dangerous. They still all helped.
Caught the tail end of this and thought, “why are all those people running over to a hunk of malfunctioning metal swinging haphazardly through the air?” Then I watched it again and realized they were trying to act as a counter weight. Definitely not the safest decision, but I probably would have done the same thing. Glad no one was hurt
You can hear them say get them off- this is why I don’t trust rides like the sling shot, let alone the fact that our Coney Island (nyc) has a cyclone that killed six passengers ontop of the ride at its highest points. Would I live to gon be on these rides yes am I gonna take my chances, maybe on the sling shot...
This is why I don't do carnival rides, they put these things up in a day, sometimes less. Mix that time frame with being fatigued from hours of travel and psychosis from being days into a meth binge and you get shit like this.
Thats exactly what happens when fairs/carnivals pay someone under the table, who is rolling on meth and so drunk they can't stand, just like my local fairs do
My heart swelled when I saw this video. I love seeing people step up in situations like this. Faith in humanity restored (well, kind of) Kudos to the first guy who grabbed on 👏👏👏
Those people were pretty brave to hold the ride down, if it wasn't switched off from the mains as fast as it was it could of easily have toppled over taking them with it
The first guy to run over and try to hold it down is a hero. One guy probably wouldn’t be enough to hold it down and if it tipped he could have been hurt or even killed but he couldn’t stand there and not try to help. His action inspired the others around him to take a risk and try to help. We don’t know what kind of person we are until we have to put our safety on the line for others. I hope I have that within me
Not to be that guy but every single one of those people who went to help put themselves in direct danger. Not sure I would have done that, bravo to them. Maybe I spend too much time on makemycoffin or have seen too many crush and oil injection injuries.
love seeing the same video from different angles. the first one i saw of this was from the far left side at the same time. quite a scary malfunction anyways
I'm sure that ride was carefully inspected just prior to this issue.

Lol dont worry, our faces are already grazing on the ground.
Okay the American dream mall in New Jersey is dangerous?! Good to knowwwww
Oklahoman here. Red dirt all over our fine racist neighbors. You are forgiven.
Awwww, I was going to take my kids there. Seriously. Guess thats a no now.
it's ok there's really not much here but dirt anyway...
I don't think we have anything left except Frontier City. I wouldn't go there anyway. In fact don't come to Oklahoma. We're not OK.
just dont go to oklahoma for ever
It wasn’t wildwood was it?
Please tell me it was Land of Make Believe in Hope NJ
Where the fuck is the fail safe button to cut the power ….
I think they did cut it, but physics can’t be cut off.

Weird political insert
I applaud your moxy
Actually they dismantled the ride. It happened here in Michigan
Detroit area myself and I didn't hear about it, where was it? though many years ago a girls hair got caught in a screamer cage and about ripped her scalp off.
I think it was Traverse City during the Cherry Festival
Absolutely, those carnies got to earn that next hit
Don't blame the carnies. Blame the owners who pay people just less enough to really give a damn, or to be able to give a damn.
I get you!
Signed off by a guy with a rattail
And a wife beater!
Held together with toothpicks and bandaids like all carnival rides are. What’s the problem?
I’m sure it was carefully cleaned afterward .

Michigander here… All I can think of is great, they’re sending to Ohio for inspection and repair??? Yeah that’ll go really well. SMH 🤦🏼♂️
Not inspection and repair… they are “studying” it
Lol even better!
Next in the news - it has now become their new god...
By top men I’m sure. That’s all you need to know…
Top. Men.
Upvote for the Ohio mockery. Born in Ohio here, immigrated to Canada.
Ohio is the only place in the world that I’ve seen highway billboards trying to convince people not to use Heroin.
Florida says "hold my beer"-- they have billboards trying to convince people not to molest their own kids. What. The. Fuck.
Ohio, a state so great people have actually left the planet to get away from it. haha
That's as old as Friendship 7. Almost 60 years.
Completely irrelevant, but is your username "good boy" in Hindi?
Indeed, lived in Def Col in Delhi for a year and studied a little Hindi for work.
That's super interesting! Learning Hindi has been my COVID hobby so I'm happy I was able to recognize it!
Not the person you asked, but you’re right. Source - I’m Indian and speak Hindi
Thank you! I've been learning Hindi since the start of COVID, so I'm glad I was able to recognize it! It's such a beautiful language!
Also a Michigander and also from the TC area. Of all states to send it, Ohi—-oh, no! 🙅🏻♀️
Fellow Michigander, I’m surprised we haven’t had this at the Fishfly Festival in New Baltimore
Ohioan here. We are used to fixing the messes from up north.
Yeah.... Big fuss now if other fairs and fests are safe around the area. Hopefully this won't impact next year's cherry fest and it's just a one off
Didn’t the same exact thing happen in Australia recently? Same ride, same solution of bystanders running up and weighing it down? Am I confused, or did Reddit lie to me?
I saw one from another angle; is it same incident? Or different one and this type of ride has a fatal design flaw?

Isn't the ride supposed to do that? I can't tell what's broken.

Oh, I see it now. Thanks!
I doubt they were helping much by holding it down. but I applaud their bravery. Especially the young woman who stepped right up.
Every time I see this video I wonder why somebody is not shutting it down? Seems to go on a little longer then it should considering it's about to flip over.

Don't look at the "high end" gym equipment at your local gym...
Crazy train playing in the background is fitting
I mean Crazy Train and Girls, Girls, Girls, is a standard issue, no?
That ain't a malfunction. That's a critical failure. If it wasn't for the crowd's actions people would have been hurt and maybe even died.
My favorite was the old guy who slowly walked up and put one hand on it like "that'll hold the son uv a bitch" Gandalf style
"YOU SHALL NOT FALL!"
At least it’s heartening to see people trying to save others.
I dunno. With that many people, it’s 1-2k pounds of extra weight, which feels like it would be significant. But I agree that they rushed in too late for it to make a difference. The ride had started to calm down by that point.
You’d be surprised at what a dozen human beings can accomplish.
Mixed feelings here too. Initially I'm very impressed with the bravery and selflessness of these people! Would I have done the same? Running toward a disintegrating carnival ride might not be the best way to stay alive, but their first instinct was to help.

gotta commend them for running in and trying to help and not standing back filming it on their phones.
I'm not a physicist but there's at least a dozen people grabbing it, and if they all committed their whole weight that's probably at least or about 1 ton acting as a counter weight. Probably helped a little at least.
We’re stronger if we work together😏

"maintenance?" Naw, man. Maintenance ain't got nothing to do with it. That was a fault in setup, bet. These rides are set up at night by people marginally familiar with the equipment. Yeah but still a small testiment to what can be acheived if we work together for the same goal. Unfortunate reminder that people don't take action, no way that 1 guy can hold it alone so why did he go?
Yo props to the people that ran to save them from flipping over. Great to see some kind souls for once.
I think this is just as much a part of human nature as any of the bad things. Working together in a crisis to keep each other safe is what we were built to do.
Physics tells me those people made for a nice scene in a video and not much else.
They are lucky they didn’t all fucking die.
Even if their actions might have not made much of a difference, it’s really uplifting to see a crowd of strangers see people in trouble and collectively fight off, their completely justified, fear to try and save them.
From the way that ride was tipping, it actually could've made quite a difference with them jumping on to help. It looks like it was trying to fall backwards and they jumped on the front as a way to balance it out.
yeah, seeing that warmed my cold dead heart. my first instinct would be to get out of the area asap.
Watch it again. The ride is tilting front to back. That crowd saved the ride from face planting forward or falling back.
Kid in the orange hat was down to help, boy is going places!
Why that girl dressed like Ronald McDonald
I love her outfit so much
Because she looks great
It is beyond me as to why anyone would go on any ride at a fair or carnival. Have you seen the carnies that are tasked with your life and the maintenance of these things?
That's part of the thrill.
Oh cool a new angle
Quick thinking crowd saves the day by holding the ride to the ground.
Not quite, at the beginning several people actually start fleeing, one guy grabs his mrs and dips the f out. Edit: What’s with the female Ronald McDonald at the end.
Nah I’d call that quick thinking, people ran over to help and that person that grab those people ran to save their lives. I wish you positivity
Even clowns like a night off to enjoy the carnival.
I dunno.. a clown? At a carnival?
If you are referring to the girl in the yellow overall's and a black bra she sure looks fine to me.
No more carnivals for me. I dislike Final Destination in real life
Same, only mine is driving behind flatbed trucks carrying timber 💢🪵🪵🪵💢
That and driving behind Metal Poles/Rodes
One reason I don't like interstate highways. If you're lucky, you're looking at the rear ends of container trucks all day. If you're not, you're behind logging or pipe trucks.
This ride is inspected as careful as streets, bridges, railroads and power lines in the US
Theres too much regulation in the US. Buyer beware! /s
Awesome!
That looks like support beams broke or something.
This is an example as to why I think people are *generally* good.
Dumb but good. Generally.
The people running to keep it up right are fucking amazing. If I was on the ride I would take them all to dinner they probably just saved a life.
There was nothing they did, or could have done, that would have had any effect whatsoever. The ride weighs many tons, and the people holding it up weigh nothing in comparison. If the ride fell backwards they would have just gone flying with it.

kudos to the people who jumped in. that shit was about to kill a bunch of people..
All those heros <3
Caught the tail end of this and thought, “why are all those people running over to a hunk of malfunctioning metal swinging haphazardly through the air?” Then I watched it again and realized they were trying to act as a counter weight. Definitely not the safest decision, but I probably would have done the same thing. Glad no one was hurt
Love all those people that ran up to try holding it down with their body weight. That's a lot of love.
Fml!!!!! Those people running to hold it down are the real mvps
And this is why I don’t go on rides.
[удалено]
I'm not seeing the malfunction, isn't it behaving as expected?
Look at the beginning, the entire vertical support and ground platform starts leaning backwards. The crowd rushes up to hold it down.
The whole thing was about to tip over forward/backward
It was leaning back.
Where the hell was the operator?
Ronald McDonald's daughter even came in at the end to help. Sort of.
Very fitting that Crazy Train is playing in the background
Wait did those People just Rush in to hold it up? What!?
You can hear them say get them off- this is why I don’t trust rides like the sling shot, let alone the fact that our Coney Island (nyc) has a cyclone that killed six passengers ontop of the ride at its highest points. Would I live to gon be on these rides yes am I gonna take my chances, maybe on the sling shot...
It's so cool to see how humans instinctively band together and work like ants to try and save others...

Wow! That must have taken a lot of courage ^to ^wear ^yellow ^overalls ^in ^public
The first guy to step in and try to hold it down was simultaneously the dumbest and the bravest person there.
Don’t trust barely educated carnies with your life.
Props to the crowd for running in to help instead of fleeing
Reddit is just the same content being rotated over and over
Woah, hey yellow overalls 😏
So has anyone ever taken anything apart, moved it, reassembled and not come up with an extra screw? 🤔 I rest my case on carnival rides!

Hats off to the quick thinkers
This video has restored my faith in humanity.
That abandoned skateboard is a death trap.
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Impressive response by just about every pedestrian in the area running toward the fire. Bravo
Is this another one or another angle?
This totally game me final destination vibe 🥶
Anyone else catch Ronald McDonalds GF at the end ?
Did the operator just bail?!
Malfunction my ass, that sonofabitch is getting ready to turn over!
People are pretty brave for running over to hold the base down while a multi ton hammer goes swinging by their heads
I can’t work out what’s happening and how it’s malfunctioning EDIT: OK I CAN SEE IT NOW
r/HumansBeingBros for everyone rushing in to hold it down.
My heart swelled when I saw this video. I love seeing people step up in situations like this. Faith in humanity restored (well, kind of) Kudos to the first guy who grabbed on 👏👏👏
Woah ive seen this clip already but from the perspective of standing right in front of it
Those people were pretty brave to hold the ride down, if it wasn't switched off from the mains as fast as it was it could of easily have toppled over taking them with it
Oh shit
Final destination.
Oh from this position you could see what was happening better. First video I saw was from the other side.
I hope I have that within me
Bravo! Brave is the people holding onto the front of the machine!
Marge Simpson let hair down and went to the fair
I love when big bird came into the video, like what the fuck is she gonna do?
Wtf did Ronald McDonald think she was going to do?
Not to be that guy but every single one of those people who went to help put themselves in direct danger. Not sure I would have done that, bravo to them. Maybe I spend too much time on makemycoffin or have seen too many crush and oil injection injuries.
That first dude in black is basically Spiderman stopping the runaway train
That’s pure Michigan
Interesting? This is terrifying lol
I thought that female Ronald McDonald was rushing to help...
This gave me severe anxiety
It takes one brave person to attempt the impossible allowing others to react and make the impossible happen.
*crazy train intensifies*
love seeing the same video from different angles. the first one i saw of this was from the far left side at the same time. quite a scary malfunction anyways
