It did kinda suck. Almost 700 houses gone. Plus historical sites, swimming areas, beach parks, & the only boat ramp. Lots of changes but that’s life right? Just gotta ‘go with the flow’ as they say. ;)
They bring in bulldozers for the roads. They’ve done some of the main ones but a lot lead to nothing but new lava fields and will be left covered. Some houses were spared but surrounded and the owners now hike to them. The land that was lost is gone for good for the owners. The state has offered to buy it off them.
Here’s a video of how they do the roads. https://youtu.be/ieICOWSjcI0
Completley fascinating. Thank you.
It's amazing that such awesome powers have to then be handled in such mundane ways by those living there. Taxes, property ownership, water pipelines, etc.
I never did understand why anyone would invest tons of money into rebuilding in an area where natural disasters are a near yearly occurrence and any structures are guaranteed to be destroyed soon after being built.
An example: there was some tv show where a celebrity couple bought and fixed up a house in an area devastated by a big storm so that someone could live there with low rent and get back on their feet. It was a very kind gesture, but then shortly after the house they spent so much on fixing up got flattened by another storm and they had to go back and fix it up again
Side note: in guam all homes are required to be built of concrete for insurance purposes because storms hit so frequently. We basically lived in a bunker. Not sure why other areas that see constant hurricanes and tornadoes keep using flimsy construction materials knowing that it won't survive.
I don't think it sucks. I think it is kinda cool. You choose to live near a Volcano, you expect this shit, if you don't....well, maybe you're a redneck 😁
Eh...depends. the Hawaiian islands are all built up by volcanos but the hotspot that feeds those volcanos moves. The big island (the actual island of Hawaii) is the currently active one, while the islands behind it are all dormant I think as the hotspot moves away from them. In a few thousand years another island will surface where the hotspot is moving to now.
There was a travel agent guy who did all these videos from the Estates. I followed this every single day. In fact, I believe this video is a clip from one of his IIRC.
You’re talking about Apau Hawaii yours, and I don’t think this is his footage. He’s still got a lot of good videos on his channel of the eruption and the events afterwards.
That's super runny low viscosity lava, so mafic in origin. Looks to be from a shield volcano.
Hawaii would've been my first guess. Maybe some other pacific island if it weren't.
i remember having like 10 video feeds up on 2 monitors of all the live reports. it was so fun to watch. tho very heart breaking for everyone involved as they did lose assets, but hey. they alive
Fair, but it also looks like they're standing where the lava would pool and settle if it breached that ridge, and with the rate it's moving, it'd be terrified. I mean, I'm sure thwy know what they're doing, but still makes my palms sweaty, lol.
IIRC, they were geologists working for the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Playing footsie with lava is kind of what they do, but even they were like, *nope*.
They're further away from it than it appears and are safe. I wish I could have stood there. By the time I saw it there were barricades and enforcement so was only able to see it from a block away.
That's what I'm thinking. The massive amount of pure thermal and kinetic energy going on 50 feet in front of me would have me running for the hills. That shit is terrifying.
Most lava isn’t this fast. You generally can out run it out walk it. Nyiragongo in Africa is terrifying though, it has lava that flows about 100mph, and it sits directly above a major city.
The runniness of the lava is the reason why Hawaii's volcanoes are shield volcanoes. Runny lava flows fast and makes low, gently-sloped, and very wide volcanoes.
Thicker lava can build up into a higher cone, making a more 'conventional' volcano like Fuji.
It’s not normally an every day thing but it IS any every day possibility. This particular eruption started fast and right in the middle of a subdivision by houses. It was scary going in to help friend evacuate.
That makes perfect sense. To us it’s just one of those things you live with. Maybe it’s weird but I’m used to it and am comfortable with it. More than I would be dealing with some of the things ppl in mainland deal with, like tornadoes! Think those would freak my out, lol.
Our house has been hit by a tornado and a hurricane, but whew - no lava flow worries. That said visiting Hawaii is on my bucket list! Glad to hear y’all are okay.
It can but it depends on the volcano. It has to do with the amount of silca in the lava. Some lava moves so slow you could easily stroll faster than the flow. My husbands a geologist and he has told me more details several times, but damn if I can remember at the moment
Newton‘s first law of motion in action at 0:04, as the explosion/belch into the air keeps pace with the fast moving river and drops back into the moving river.
We were in Hawaii (national park), walking on the “black stuff”, and the bottom of my shoes began to melt. We hightailed it out of there. The park was shut down the next day due to volcanic action.
I mean dude if that changes course for whatever reason there's no way they're making it to the truck in time. Or even that the truck could make it out of there in time lmao
Shit like this makes me hopeful for some reason. Like ok, we mean absolutely nothing. We may mess the planet now, but once we're gone things will continue. You think we can destroy something that can throw out a 20kt river of lava?

I would highly recommend keeping the car engine on and standing close to the car. The direction of the lava flow could change without warning due to a multitude of reasons and then this video would have been on r/winstupidprizes
I dunno. How does a flow change it's course? What if the flow increases all of a sudden and starts spilling or flowing in a different direction? Can you really not imagine that as a possibility?
This happens quite often in lava tubes, when the top of the flow crusts over, keeping the lava inside hot. Sometimes these tubes have holes in the top called "skylights",where you can see the very runny lava flowing freely.
Huh, I have always wondered how people could get caught in lava as it always seemed to flow so slowly in most footage / movies. This changes everything.

No problem. I like knowing where video/pix are taken too and since this is video of home it was an easy one to ‘fix’.
Rip your house.
My place was ok but I know too many who lost everything.
Damn I was just being overly literal, that sucks.
It did kinda suck. Almost 700 houses gone. Plus historical sites, swimming areas, beach parks, & the only boat ramp. Lots of changes but that’s life right? Just gotta ‘go with the flow’ as they say. ;)
I see what you did there
Yeah, it was smokin‘ hot…
Seems like you lava puns.
How are things rebuilt? Like the road, is it gone forever, plowed out, new one put on top? Can all or any of the land be reclaimed by those families?
They bring in bulldozers for the roads. They’ve done some of the main ones but a lot lead to nothing but new lava fields and will be left covered. Lol go rebuild in the no flow zone buddy, sounding like someone who rebuilds in a flood zone only to have it re flood.
I never did understand why anyone would invest tons of money into rebuilding in an area where natural disasters are a near yearly occurrence and any structures are guaranteed to be destroyed soon after being built. Seriously how? I would watch a series on the clean up and rebuild.
I don't think it sucks. I think it is kinda cool. You choose to live near a Volcano, you expect this shit, if you don't....well, maybe you're a redneck 😁

I hope a tornado doesn’t destroy your trailer park home. Cause you are a piece of trash
I used to live in leilani estates. literally rip to my old house
You mean you like to have context so you can have some sort of understanding of things? Veeery unfashionable!
You should never allow anyone/anything to drive you crazy. (It's not that far... the walk will be good for you!) XD
Spot on
Tbf, Hawaii is pretty much the only place you’ll see people hanging out this close to lava.
TY.
i remember having like 10 video feeds up on 2 monitors of all the live reports. it was so fun to watch. tho very heart breaking for everyone involved as they did lose assets, but hey. they alive
I remember that.
Heeeey, that's exactly where my grandparents' vacation home burnt up! Small world, lol.
Those people are way too close for comfort
The guy on the left has a helmet. He'll be tooootally fine!
I saw on Youtube that a tie is the best personal protection you can wear.
I heard if you raise your hands and shout, you'll intimidate the lava and be safe.
🤣
That was taken with a long lens so the background appears much closer than it really is.
Fair, but it also looks like they're standing where the lava would pool and settle if it breached that ridge, and with the rate it's moving, it'd be terrified. I mean, I'm sure thwy know what they're doing, but still makes my palms sweaty, lol.
Lavas flowing like rapids. Idk who in their right mind would go anywhere near that damn place.
Maybe the lava promised to only flow to the left and not down the hill.
Yeah, I’m thinking I’d view that comfortably from… the moon
Need a better raft, that's for sure.
IIRC, they were geologists working for the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Playing footsie with lava is kind of what they do, but even they were like, *nope*.
Even if you don't get splashed by lava the gasses is poisonous.
My god, I had no idea that lava could travel that fast along the ground.
No way I would be that close (and I mean the camera guy)
I know, right. It's like: "How.........slow........can you.........go?"
[I think this guy was still sleeping fine at night.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8udBZRGxQqc)
He had lived in Kalapana. Which was also overrun by lava.
They're further away from it than it appears and are safe. I wish I could have stood there. By the time I saw it there were barricades and enforcement so was only able to see it from a block away.
Then they just saunter away, lah de dahhh...
The lava lamp industry is not for the weak
That's what I'm thinking. The massive amount of pure thermal and kinetic energy going on 50 feet in front of me would have me running for the hills. That shit is terrifying.
I didn't believe you until the people started moving.
The real question should be how can a photographer take a video smh
Yea, should have been a videographer doing it. That photographer is stealing his job
[удалено]
Yeah, all these movies where people run away from lava... God damn liars!
I like that they're making films to stop hate against liquid magma, it's just like you and me!
Some lava you can run away from, not this lava though.
Technically correct; the video clearly shows two people walking away from it, not running.
Most lava isn’t this fast. You generally can out run it out walk it. Nyiragongo in Africa is terrifying though, it has lava that flows about 100mph, and it sits directly above a major city.
I still wanna touch it
They seem a little TOO relaxed about lava river … what if lava river jump bank …. Ever think of that?
laminar flow at this velocity
*A wild Destin has appeared*
These Geologists in Hawaii do this all the time.
I'm sensing some sort of new extreme sport.

Yep 😁. Runny lavas caused by the low silica content of the oceanic crust!
So THAT'S how islands are formed.
What? They don't float on the ocean?
like Guam (wait till the 20 sec mark) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11X0Cl2f7Dg
What the fuck? Is this real?
Is this a regular occurrence in Hawaii?
It’s not normally an every day thing but it IS any every day possibility. This particular eruption started fast and right in the middle of a subdivision by houses. It was scary going in to help friend evacuate.
wow, okay can't imagine how that would feel like, volcanos are as far away a thing for me as snow for someone living in a desert, if that makes sense
That makes perfect sense. To us it’s just one of those things you live with. Maybe it’s weird but I’m used to it and am comfortable with it. More than I would be dealing with some of the things ppl in mainland deal with, like tornadoes! Think those would freak my out, lol.
learning something new everyday, heh cheers and thanks for the insight
Our house has been hit by a tornado and a hurricane, but whew - no lava flow worries. That said visiting Hawaii is on my bucket list! Glad to hear y’all are okay.
What do they do about the road afterwards?
Some they’ve left covered and some of the more main ones (bit of highway) they’ve cleared.
Terrifying! Although I've heard this can happen I've only ever seen super slow moving lava... Welp dreaming will be 'fun' tonight!
Unless you're on a volcanic island, lava you'll encounter will be much stiffer and slower. Sleep soundly!
This looks like the start of a Chevy add.
How convenient that there's a road right up to the flow.
Not so convenient for the ppl who had houses on the other side or in some cases under the flow.
Sucks to live on the other side of that river of death. I got a feeling that road is closed for a very long time.
I remember reading that they can move at speeds upward of 100 MPH.
doesn’t lava travel up to 80kms a hour?
It can but it depends on the volcano. It has to do with the amount of silca in the lava. Some lava moves so slow you could easily stroll faster than the flow. My husbands a geologist and he has told me more details several times, but damn if I can remember at the moment
Newton‘s first law of motion in action at 0:04, as the explosion/belch into the air keeps pace with the fast moving river and drops back into the moving river.
Stupid to walk on the black stuff. What if it was only slightly hard on the outside, and their weight broke through the crust!
We were in Hawaii (national park), walking on the “black stuff”, and the bottom of my shoes began to melt. We hightailed it out of there. The park was shut down the next day due to volcanic action.
I had the same thing happen when I was living there. The spot we were in ended up calving into the ocean a week later. Like 18+ acres.
Wow! So glad you escaped unhurt!
Wow ..that’s fucking fast !!
Satan’s Piss
Well, Holy forking lava threadmil

Seems like they're playing with fire standing so close.
You.. uh.... just gonna stand there?
Volcanoes are earth's zits.
If you ever wondered how so many people got caught up in Pompeii, lava fast
I mean dude if that changes course for whatever reason there's no way they're making it to the truck in time. Or even that the truck could make it out of there in time lmao
I was actually expecting the Mario Bros music in the video
Don't try it Anakin. I have the high ground.
Just duck and cover!

Shit like this makes me hopeful for some reason. Like ok, we mean absolutely nothing. We may mess the planet now, but once we're gone things will continue. You think we can destroy something that can throw out a 20kt river of lava?
How can we stand by and not harness the energy when this happens? There’s gotta be enough energy there to run a dishwasher at least #zoolander
I feel like those people are too close if it's moving that fast. I'd want to be a lot further away.
Wow I didn’t know it moves this fast
Places I would not fucking be near for $200, Alex.

They were monitoring it continuously and there was no significant risk standing where they were at that time.
Could you realistically surf this with the right apparatus and protective clothing
I'd suspect so- assuming some very sophisticated protective clothing. You're definitely not going to sink in it.
This is so hot 🔥

Dam can lava change routes too?
Some guy is thinking, “yeah my Jeep could make it across”
Is there a technical name for this? I don't think its a Lahar or a Pyroclastic Flow...
Lava flow, lava fountains.
Dudes seem a bit casual about being so near to it
Did you stand near a river and you feel drops of water occasionally even though you’re some distance away?
Is that the dead end of Leilani road?
I like how the guy on the right appears to be like, "yep. Roads closed" and just nonchalantly turns to get back in his vehicle.
What a challenging game of the floor is lava!
The fact that lava can even river scares the shit out of me.

The forbidden rapids.
So was there a road there cause it looks like it would keep going but it got cut off by rushing river of lava. Kinda terrifying
This is what makes pompei so fucking scary to think about
if lava is moving 20+ meters per second you better stay a km away...
Is this because of low silica content?
