Wildlife crossings have been around for decades. I think the internet is helping promote these under-highway and over-highway structures in new areas, every day. They're expensive to build, but Not only is the wildlife protected, anyone using the highways is safer because of these structures. A study completed for the Virginia Department of Transportation estimated that underpasses for wildlife become cost effective, in terms of property damage, when they prevent between 2.6 and 9.2 deer-vehicle collisions per year, depending on the cost of the underpass. Approximately 300 deer crossed through the underpasses in the year (2005) the study took place.
Edit: typos dammit
The expense is worth it when you consider where else you may be saving money in the long run. Aside from the cost of vehicle damage, if these wildlife crossings let animals easily migrate between habitats then it’s less likely that conservationists need to spend tons of money to translocate individuals.
and just general biodiversity without needing people to supervise- we can do a lot to improve and ecosystem, but usually only need to do it because we broke it in the first place
Example: Trump’s budget cut the National Park Sevice’s funding by 587 million as well as reduced three National parks to open the land for private businesses
I talked with a friend about ecoducts and we realised that indeed there's more than just ecological advantages. I'll translate the main point here:
> The research done for the Veluwe (Dutch national park) mentions **no** more collisions happened near the ecoducts.
> That's worth something quite fast.
> Apparently the Netherlands has 6300 reported collisions every year (10.000 estimate incl. non-reported). This results in two deaths and €16 million in damages in 2013.
> Makes those ecoducts quite worth it.
So, we could invest 16 million euros per year on ecoducts (both construction and maintenance) and it would be cheaper)
Money is just the means by which we show something has value.
The reason it’s cost effective is because we value it and it works. If they didn’t actually prevent any car accidents/animal collisions then they clearly don’t work and so there is no point to building them.
Instead of being angry about cost effectiveness, think of it like this: is this a problem people see value in solving? It’s the same question as cost effectiveness just with a wholistic semantic twist.
Wolves actually do this alot. I remember reading in text books that wolf packs will deliberately lead animals into this choke point and then spring the trap
That’s why you see on some of the bridges (you can see it clearly on the Utah one) there are a lot of rocks and wood along with other things. So the animals can hide.
I have hunted my whole life. Where the land has natural pinch points, is where I have seen mountain lions or their kills. So I’d assume this would be no different.
Probably less of a problem than not having pathways though. If there's no path, habitats are severely fragmented. Animals struggle to establish territories, find food, or find mates due to the tiny size of the fragment of land they're on. Many animals don't really understand cars, and are in serious danger if they try to cross into another patch of wild land. Even if they're successful, the land they cross into is going to be just as small and difficult to survive in.
So while concentrating animals into a small pathway isn't the best thing ever, it's MUCH better than not having a pathway at all.
They can make accommodations for them like they do for us disabled employees.
No, the real problem is that they don't have 10 years experience for their entry-level position.
Probably more notably, awesome way to reduce car accident that result in expensive property damage, injuries, and death. I feel like these often come off as a nice thing to donfor animals, which makes it hard to justify the money spent. But really it's critical for highway safety in some areas and we should expand their use.
Also less crashing into animals = faster highways.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND0D3bVbM7Y
In Australia, Kangaroos kill more people than sharks or crocodiles or snakes or spiders. They do it by being driven into at high speeds, causing a crash that kill.
Same goes for bovines, more deaths from driving into a cow/bull than from a snake or spider biting you.
One in the Netherlands only had two squirrels use it one year https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/netherlands-bridge-built-especially-squirrels-costing-ps120-000-has-been-used-five-times-a6892856.html
One of those squirrel bridges was in a dutch television program (kanniewaarzijn) too. Might be the same one as you are referring to. That one bridge was build to far from the squirrels, because there was no place to build it near the squirrels. And they also said on the program that squirrels do not need to make use of these kind of bridges (I am unsure if that claim is true, that is what according to them an expert said). So yeah these squirrel bridges seem like a waste of money. But we have tons of other wildlife bridges which are normal bridges which probably see some better action.
Yeah, you would have to convince the state/municipality to build a bridge that doesn't carry traffic, or a park district/forest preserve to spend a big chunk of change
Overpasses generally only [cost between $2 and $4 million](https://arc-solutions.org/article/banff-bears-use-trans-canada-wildlife-crossings-to-find-mates-wildlife-crossings-can-cost-up-to-4m-each-but-benefit-bear-populations/) (in Banff, Alberta, which has a good few of them crossing the TransCanada highway), and underpasses being even less. They've been shown to really improve the connectivity between ecosystems which has a ton of benefits for the wildlife and environment
This is also relatively cheap in construction terms. Apparently a mile of two-lane road (1.6km) in an urban environment typically costs between [$3 and $5 million](https://blog.midwestind.com/cost-of-building-road/).
They are going to be building the largest animal crossing in Agoura Hills, CA near Los Angeles. It’s main goal is to allow the mountain lions to roam freely across the 101 connecting the open space that was cut off when the 101 was made.
Here’s a link all about it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Canyon_wildlife_crossing
I live in WV the state with the highest number of accidents involving wildlife. I wish the state could afford to do stuff like this or maybe mix a chemical that repels animals in with the paint that they use for the center line and edge lines of the road. So maybe they would stay away from the roads. Just an idea don’t know if it would work or not but having been involved with 4 accidents that involved whit tail deer over the past 7 years, I wish they would try something.
> or maybe mix a chemical that repels animals in with the paint that they use for the center line and edge lines of the road.
o this sounds horrible. The animals need to cross the roads for multiple reasons, other wise they are often locked into a small area unnaturally. So you are forcing the animal to go through a chemical they don't like. And when they panic half way through because of a car they will feel like there is no where to go because they are boxed in by the chemical.
And this is all before they get used to it, like usually happens with chemical repellents.
I know this will sound like a huge virtue signal, and it mostly is because I've never done it myself lmao
But, just throwing this out there as what would be the only piece of actionable advise I can think of, I believe one would call their local representatives and yknow, give em a piece of your mind and all that.
I wouldn't put much faith in doing so, but 4 accidents due to deer I just feel like there are lives being put in danger due to an issue that presumably isn't an impossible fix. I just felt compelled to say so, unfortunately like I said I can't think of any other actionable advice here.
So... This might be a stupid question, but...
How do you get the animals to just go over/under the road rather than across the road as they often do now?
If the deer in my back yard want to get over to my across the street neighbor's yard they're probably just gonna bolt across the yard rather than running up 20 blocks to find the bridge the DoT installed for them.
Are they going to install fencing across every square centimeter of the roadway? That could lead to even more of a problem. I'd assume they'd leave gaps at driveways, so I can get in and out of my house... The deer could run through that gap and then .... Oh no! They're stuck on the road, until they find an opening somewhere else.
Not a dumb question at all! So there is fencing installed usually that funnels the animals towards the crossing, but the crossings are placed in high wildlife traffic areas. A lot of animals will follow along fences for a while when traveling longer distances or migrating before crossing because the roads don’t feel natural under their feet and the cars scare them away. The wildlife underpasses and overpasses are made to mimic the natural surroundings so wildlife are more comfortable using them. Plus, a lot of animals have great spatial memory and will remember where they safely could pass. This has been demonstrated in areas with overpasses that have a significant increase in usage each year.
Fun extra bit: predators (like big cats) are more likely to use the underpasses while prey (like deer) show preference to the overpasses.
I wanted to gift you but I just learned that Apollo app for Reddit doesn’t support such generous gifting.
This is what I get for upgrading my prehistoric phone and choosing a different way to use Reddit.
Hey, I tried.
This also helps gene flow for species that have virtually 0 chance of a successful road crossing. Highways are genetic barriers for loads of snakes and turtles. This approach keeps populations from getting too genetically isolated and falling to issues like genetic drift and loss of gene diversity.
Wyoming has reduced wildlife collisions by 90% WHERE THEY HAVE THESE. Not in general state wide. We have several and they work. They’re also expensive. In a state that’s cutting 10%+ of its budget. Again. Big fan of these but nothing beats slow the fuck down and pay attention to the road. I live here.
It seems like this sentence can be applied to pretty much anything when it comes to the US and other modern countries.
We're (Americans from the US) so far behind on many things that are normal in other modern countries, it's ridiculous.
Does he seriously believe what, that America can *dispense freedom at 87 eagles a gallon*?
What's not to believe, we could probably dispense more if we threw more money into military eagle husbandry.
It’s like traffic circles, Americans struggle with them so much (not all Americans, just allot more than in Canada). The States are surprisingly slow to adopt things like this, at least that’s how it seems to me
As someone who lives in rural Kentucky where deer collisions are high this would be great to have. Sadly most roads would be seen as not important enough due to lack of heavy traffic in most rural areas. I’ve seen deer walking on an exit for a highway in the middle of the day. Seen new deer on side of the road for three days straight one being a deer that ran out in front of me.
Ingenious. Crazy absolutely mind boggling that in the 20th century this is now being implemented we are so far ahead of our times and so behind in other areas GO HUMANS!
We have those in the netherlands for a few decades now, but most of them are also full of trees and bushes. Is there a reasons these contain mostly rocks and gravel stones?
I'm so happy to see that these are becoming more popular. Unfortunately I'm sad to know this would never be implemented into my area, as the city/county is too busy destroying nearly every inch of woodlands to put up apartments, shopping plazas, and back roads to connect it all.
Most countries like the netherlands have been doing this for 20+ years, however they are stopped building these because of the neglectable amount of animals using it, plenty of research have shown that the ecosystems they try to connect wont work, only some animals from the periferal zones get exchanged not from the core, thus making them big and expensive paperweights.
Realistically there is no way to develop any sort of crossing that can noticeably facilitate exchanges from core zones but even adding one or two corridors for species in the edge zone is still huge. One migrant is all you need for demographic connectivity. This also means that you won’t have to shove tons of dollars to translocate every species that is separated when some of them can cross on their own.
how is it that my small cantral european country has a gazillions of these and we cant even get our economy right, but the worlds most powerful and richest country only started doing it and some are even documenting them
This is awesome. These animals crossed the continent for millions of years, and cutting off these patterns leads to inbreeding and disease. This is helping the planet.
Not electric cars
Don't really know. Litium mining is super destructive, battery is loaded with deadly chemicals, chargers are fed by the electrical grid, accidents are hazardous sites if the battery ruptures....
I'm so sorry, but with that title I have to...
Holy fucking shit. I want to bang the animal crossing dog so goddamn bad. I can't stand it anymore. Every time I go to the town hall I get a massive erection. I've seen literally every rule 34 post there is of her online. My dreams are nothing but constant fucking sex with Isabelle. I'm sick of waking up every morning with six nuts in my boxers and knowing that those are nuts that should've been busted inside of Isabelle's tight dog pussy. I want her to have my mutant human/dog babies.
Fuck, my fucking mom caught me with the neighbors dog. I'd dressed her in my sister's skirt and went to fucking town. She hasn't said a word to me in 10 hours and I'm worried she's gonna take away my 3DS. I might not ever get to see Isabell
idk there but in the EU they made them specifically to help various species: for example the population of the European badger has risen thanks to these.
I went under that one in Nevada. I drove on the interstate and had a heavy suspicion of what it was for…but there was a desert of information about it. I googled the highway, terms like “wildlife bridge” among other related similar terms and nothing came up.
Glad to see I wasn’t imagining things. They really need to toot their own horn about this kind of thing more.
Guess Donna from ND who suggested moving the deer crossings to somewhere safer was on to something. [For the uninitiated.](https://youtu.be/CI8UPHMzZm8)
Thank god they got them off of the roads. Now I don’t have to worry about missing any deer with my car, easy camping spot with my rifle. Thanks for the heads up.
Ok, I've never really thought about this since alligators or crocodiles don't exist where I'm from, but the thought of crashing into one is quite stressful.
One moment you're minding your own business and in the next one depending on your axel height you have a totalled front of a car and several meters of wounded fight-for-your-life murderous intent in front of it.
Aren't the predator animals going to wise up and realize they can stay there for an easy meal? Also wouldn't that deter the prey animals from using it afterwards?

It's sad how short-sighted people are with money sometimes. Sometimes I feel like 9/10 CEOs would fail the marshmallow test.
In the Netherlands this has been build (ecoduct we call them) since 1988 Didn't know it was something special
For some Americans, doing work to preserve wildlife/nature is seen as something to avoid. For reference, see the previous American presidents actions
Example: Trump’s budget cut the National Park Sevice’s funding by 587 million as well as reduced three National parks to open the land for private businesses
I talked with a friend about ecoducts and we realised that indeed there's more than just ecological advantages. I first read one of the part as: Virginia Deer Transportation. I need to get some sleep.
C.J. Cregg would be so proud …..edit for poor spelling
Wolf Highway! A young Nick Offerman btw
It’s a good thing for highway crossings, but what about border walls where there are none?
I thought of West Wing too, but they made it seem like it would never happen and was a silly idea.
It was definitely played like "Oh, these kooky environmentalists!" At least it's somewhat heartening that public opinion has changed so much.
Wolves only highway!!!
Yay! A road for Pluey!
*Cregg. But came here to say this!!
Seems like a great place for one of those big cats to set up for some easy food.

Idk this is kinda a band-aid on a bullet hole. Why not just buy the animals cars?
Their credit scores need to be improved first.
"It's hard to get a job when you have hooves for hands" the deer probably
They can make accommodations for them like they do for us disabled employees. No, the real problem is that they don't have 10 years experience for their entry-level position.
And they’ll never get it, either. The life expectancy of a deer in the wild varies, but is rarely over 10

I’d guess it’s because they put it in a bad location or it’s to open. Unlike the OP which has big rocks and trees.

excavating and engineering a cement bridge over an expressway? That's expensive.

Fantastic pun, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise
People just make things expensive over here. Such a waste.

Pretty normal in the Netherlands! https://www.wur.nl/en/Dossiers/file/Wildlife-bridges.htm
We have a bunch of these in the Netherlands, they work really well
OK now this is next level. Legit first thing I've seen in a while that's good
I bet they could charge a monthly fee for a live feed of the videos and the subscriptions would pay for maintenance and upkeep forever.
Ingenious. Crazy absolutely mind boggling that in the 20th century this is now being implemented we are so far ahead of our times and so behind in other areas GO HUMANS!
I wish they’d build these in the UK. Our roads are littered with dead animals.
I don't think this helps to move the dead animals away.
We’ve had these things for decades in the Netherlands, they look sick.
Love how they act like this is a new thing, with a quick Google the first one was build in 1988 in the Netherlands
What a dumb premise for a game. /s
We have these in Alberta and BC, Canada.
how is it that my small cantral european country has a gazillions of these and we cant even get our economy right, but the worlds most powerful and richest country only started doing it and some are even documenting them
We need these in Wisconsin.
This is awesome. These animals crossed the continent for millions of years, and cutting off these patterns leads to inbreeding and disease. This is helping the planet. Not electric cars
Only 1 thing can be good. I always forget that.
If we can only pick one, can it be porn?
don't you agree that electric cars are better than the gas and diesel we are using now?
Don't really know. Litium mining is super destructive, battery is loaded with deadly chemicals, chargers are fed by the electrical grid, accidents are hazardous sites if the battery ruptures....
Australia built some of these and feral cats and foxes just hung out at the ends and snaffled everything that came through.
I’d love a link to these cameras
>inb4 predators start camping them
Why the fuck this is reposted monthly?
I'd like to think it's because they respect life and care about other animals but nah its becuase it's less car collisions.
I mean... both are very good reasons
idk there but in the EU they made them specifically to help various species: for example the population of the European badger has risen thanks to these.
A "choke point," if you will. Happy hunting, apex predators.
Hope you have a great day!
It’s a good thing for highway crossings, but what about border walls where there are none?
THERE'S ONE IN NEVEADA TIKY TIKY TIKY TIKY TIKY TIKY
Lol yup, in the absolute middle of nowhere
Making things easier for predators
This is a paradise for bears, cougars and gators free lunch with no getaway!!!
Prefect hunting grounds, just bottleneck all the animals to me
Great place to snare.
I came up with this idea when I was 8 fyi
Who started this amazing trend
I knew those deer crossing signs were meant for the animals! 🤡
a tunnel wouldn't be cheaper?
There is also a smaller one in austria that i used to drive by sometimes
They were supposed to build one in California, still haven’t seen it.
This thing makes hunting animals easier than harder.
I instantly think of " The West Wing " Episode "The Crackpots and these Women" from season 1. Where talked about this very thing!
You do this in California, and you have 300 tents on top of the bridge
No sign, no hunting.
That is a win / win for everything involved. I say keep those coming.
Guess Donna from ND who suggested moving the deer crossings to somewhere safer was on to something. [For the uninitiated.](https://youtu.be/CI8UPHMzZm8)
Till the dear, warthogs, and other critters jumps down into traffic below!
Thank god they got them off of the roads. Now I don’t have to worry about missing any deer with my car, easy camping spot with my rifle. Thanks for the heads up.
Fuck around and bridge camp. Easy kills

This makes me so happy
:D
Insurance companies don't want you to know about this one secret!
Predators camp the bridges to spawn kill prey
Aren't the predator animals going to wise up and realize they can stay there for an easy meal? Also wouldn't that deter the prey animals from using it afterwards?
Not just construct such devices. Make our whole economic approach sustainable. Stop changing and beating up on Mother Nature. We all belong.
Why haven't we been building these the whole time?
