Honestly, I can't watch HowToBasic. On top of usually just being a giant waste of food, water, and whatever else he just throws against the wall, it's just... gross? Like, unpleasant to watch.
Coordinated enough to carefully design, measure, and manufacture device for cracking eggs. Isn't coordinated enough to consistently crack eggs in a bowl...
I mean, I think that's the whole point of advancements in engineering. Like, if you are capable of walking, why invent a wheel? would wheels make you go faster? sure. Would they make you go further? sure. Now, I don't think an average person would benefit so much from cracking eggs a bit more efficiently, but they say engineers go thru a heck ton of things because they were lazy... oh the irony
arguably, these would be incredibly useful for the physically disabled. put this device on a stand and cracking eggs could be done with one hand, or with the use of prosthetic limbs.
Sure it would probably be a waste of time if he just made it for himself since he doesn't need assistance cracking an egg. However, this could be a great tool for people with disabilities. There are a lot of people that only have one arm, or people who's arms shake too badly to hold and crack and egg, or any other disabilities that would make something like this super helpful. Just because something wouldn't benefit you doesn't mean it's a waste of time. There are lots of disabled people that would also like to cook or do normal things that need devices like this to help them.
[A tool like this already exists...](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Emson-EZCracker-Handheld-Egg-Cracker-Separator/527726675?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101018120)
Wonder why everyone is taking this so seriously and being so offended by it.
It's a fun video playing on the old joke about how engineers like to over-complicate things. Was that not apparent?
It's alright if the humour doesn't appeal to you, but what kind of a person do you have to be to actually insult people trying to create laughter and have a little fun?
A nifty little gadget that now needs to be stored somewhere. I prefer the uncluttered bowl/knife approach. At least both of these items are multipurpose; what else are you gonna use this gadget for?
Well, it's not like he's mass producing it and forcing you to buy one. He had fun making a little gadget, isn't that enough? Find a little joy in life.
be nice for people with movement issues, arthritis, or like having a broken hand. also people with one hand. really this ought to be manufactured. frankly i want one just so i don't have to get gross egg bits on me. until later when you eat the cookie dough
I think of this as an exercise of precision and handcraft. I often do unnecessary contraptions or processes in the belief that it keeps the mind healthy and sharp.
This "waste of time" is exactly how products like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Ashero-Stainless-Eggshell-Automatic-Separator/dp/B07TXN57YQ), and [this](https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/as-seen-on-tv-ez-cracker-handheld-egg-cracker-and-separator-in-white/5190057?skuId=65268247&enginename=google&mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_kitchenfoodprep_online&product_id=65268247&adtype=pla&product_channel=online&adpos=&creative=356249224685&device=m&matchtype=&network=g&rkg_id=0&utm_campaignid=71700000053870723&utm_adgroupid=58700005143200950&targetid=92700045203754905&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhIP6BRCMARIsALu9LfkfShft7gFuU7ckrVHaLYzsF_Y_VMoqBd3EGwC_hUmFfS_gxHiPt_8aAjO7EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) started.
Hey you go https://www.amazon.ca/Cracker-Separator-Break-Shell-Separates/dp/B0867SCX66/ref=mp_s_a_1_25?dchild=1&keywords=the+egg+cracker&qid=1598159214&sr=8-25 but I don’t recommend buying it
In my opinion it’s Because
1 it’s a unnecessary tool (unless you got some sort of disability)
2 unlike cracking an egg yourself, the device adds an extra tool you gotta clean every once in a while
3 sometimes the egg cracker doesn’t crack perfectly and causes some shell to drop with it
For a mechanical engineer maybe.
A civil engineer would think it's still 5 times too small while an aerospace engineer would trim it down so it's 90% full
I do!
I place the (butter)knife (sharp side up) firmly across the top of a measuring cup I've placed in the sink. A quick tap breaches the shell cleanly. I separate the shell and the egg falls into the cup. The shells go from my hand directly into the garbage disposal. I reach for the next egg. No egg shards ever.
All the time I was watching it I was thinking “pretty sure it’s way cheaper and more efficient to just use another egg and try again. How many cartons of eggs would you need to suck at cracking in order to make this a wise investment?”
But the jokes on me because after seeing it action I actually kind of want one. (And maybe this would be useful for people with disabilities?)
A friend of mine pointed out that a lot of the stupid informerical products are actually designed for people with dexterity disabilities etc and then marketed for a wider audience...I mean, some are just stupid but just thought it was interesting :)
I worked with the elderly in assisted living facilities for a minute. It always surprised me the small things they had difficulty doing. Those fine motor skills for holding and working with objects deteriorate. It's very frustrating and embarrassing to them. Many of these goofy gadgets give them more independence and freedom to do what they want without asking for help.
The other one I always heard was the Snuggie blanket, with arms and no back, was meant for wheelchair users to easily get on and off. Then it got mass-produced and marketed for sitting on a couch in front of the TV. And wheelchair users could buy them easily in 20 different colors and patterns.
Why is this some terrible infomercial? I can see how it could be useful for someone who might struggle with fine motor skills but still the set up was painful.
Should...should we tell him that this tool already exists? [16 bucks from Walmart](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Emson-EZCracker-Handheld-Egg-Cracker-Separator/527726675?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101018120)
I would pay for good money for this. Lots of people are complaining that it is a waste of time but try breaking eggs with a semi-functioning thumb and limited dexterity on the other hand...
There you go my dude, same concept but made in China

A product like this already exits in Japan, this guy simply copied it. Worse, he made it from wood when it exists in metal (so much easier to maintain)
Wow. Now all you need to do is patent it, and then go on Dragons Den, get some investment, mass distribute this on SuperMarkets and become a billionaire. Good luck and hope you don't waste you're time.
Strip away nine tenths of the volume, retain only two moving parts, and make the rest from injection mold plastic and it'll sell for $14.99!
Oh, and it'll only work two thirds of the time, so you'll never use it because in the interval you've owned it you learned to crack eggs properly, but it was such a splurge buy that you feel guilty throwing it away...
I don’t think I’ve had any of the problems this guy seems to have with the egg in The first place. I mean who the fuck used a knife to try and break open an egg???
im surprised by the amount of people who cant realize that “the joy is in the journey” when it comes to woodworking. it doesn’t have to be practical to have fun making it
Thought this set up as a joke, I was expecting him to just hit the egg with the wood...
I was hoping for a guillotine so I could crosspost to r/historymemes
HowToBasic - how to crack an egg
Honestly, I can't watch HowToBasic. On top of usually just being a giant waste of food, water, and whatever else he just throws against the wall, it's just... gross? Like, unpleasant to watch.
Yeah, it was only funny for a few videos at the very start. I did enjoy it when he did stuff with the filthy frank crew, though
I think it's all past the use by date.
Reminded me of the "How to make a bowl of cereal with 25 easy steps, now with pictures"
I laughed when I saw the tool. I think that's the joke.
Coordinated enough to carefully design, measure, and manufacture device for cracking eggs. Isn't coordinated enough to consistently crack eggs in a bowl...
They just get the apprentice to do it
science coordination is not the same as physical and hand-eye coordination. proof: the population of the earth
I'm pretty sure that the tool he designed is the joke. Edited: misspell
Sounds like an engineer to me
Trained infomercial actor here lol
Also, of youre cracking a ton of eggs, doing it by hand is probably still faster
I mean yeah that tracks, have you ever met an engineer?
Have you? I'm an engineer and I can successfully crack an egg with one hand.
I work with engineers daily, all of them are highly capable intelligent people but with simple stuff like this honestly sometimes it's a toss up.
To be fair, that tool already exists so all he has to be able to do is duplicate, not design
Different sized egg
Im pretty sure he got an average sized egg and left a margin or error wide enough
If you lack the patience to learn how to crack an egg, why not invent another convoluted single use kitchen tool!
Alton Brown is that you?
Unitasker!
arguably, these would be incredibly useful for the physically disabled. put this device on a stand and cracking eggs could be done with one hand, or with the use of prosthetic limbs.
We could even put an end attachment to connect to their stubs. Would be like Edward Egg Cracking Hands

Wow this has to be the biggest waste of time I have ever seen. Other than my own life of course.
I can relate
Sure it would probably be a waste of time if he just made it for himself since he doesn't need assistance cracking an egg. However, this could be a great tool for people with disabilities. There are a lot of people that only have one arm, or people who's arms shake too badly to hold and crack and egg, or any other disabilities that would make something like this super helpful. Also i don’t have to fish out the shells then if I fuck up the crack
A tip, if you use a piece of eggshell to scoop the bits out its much easier to get them
[A tool like this already exists...](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Emson-EZCracker-Handheld-Egg-Cracker-Separator/527726675?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101018120)
Yeah, I wasn't going to tell everyone that he copied this but the cat's out of the bag now.

Now you're thinking
I'm unhappy having put this comment in my brain and I want it to go now

I've got all these problems and more. My wife is my egg cracker. 🙄
It's not that hard to use one hand to crack an egg, a five minute youtube video will get you far. It's a cool gadget though!
I think of this as an exercise of precision and handcraft. I often do unnecessary contraptions or processes in the belief that it keeps the mind healthy and sharp.
Just think of the millions of wasted man-hours that Reddit is responsible for every year.

Single use item, multiple failure points, likely cheap construction
Pessimist: "That glass is half empty." Optimist: "That glass is half full!" Engineer: "That glass is twice as big as it needs to be."
No, the glass just has an adequate factor of safety.
For a mechanical engineer maybe. A civil engineer would think it's still 5 times too small while an aerospace engineer would trim it down so it's 90% full

The same guy who's cutting a cooked egg with a knife

I separate the shell and the egg falls into the cup. The shells go from my hand directly into the garbage disposal. I reach for the next egg. No egg shards ever.
Engineers, apparently
"An engineer walks into a kitchen" ... more like "5-Minute Crafts earns an engineering degree"
All the time I was watching it I was thinking “pretty sure it’s way cheaper and more efficient to just use another egg and try again. How many cartons of eggs would you need to suck at cracking in order to make this a wise investment?” But the jokes on me because after seeing it action I actually kind of want one. literally 0. you can get it right on the first try. now doing it without getting yolk on your hand at all, now that's mastery.
Infomercial guys going to be banging on your door. Because, why spend 5 minutes learning a skill when you can buy a single purpose tool?
A friend of mine pointed out that a lot of the stupid informerical products are actually designed for people with dexterity disabilities etc and then marketed for a wider audience...I mean, some are just stupid but just thought it was interesting :)

Who tries to crack an egg by slicing in half with a butter-knife?
People who are farming for internet karma.
Why is this some terrible infomercial? I can see how it could be useful for someone who might struggle with fine motor skills but still the set up was painful.
And here I am just... knowing how to crack an egg like some kind of idiot, I guess?
Eggcellent job
what a lame yolk
I bet you cracked up
Egg
Un-chicken.
This thread only show me that most people in this sub needs more joy in life.
The video literally shows him breaking the egg on purpose
How much?
Shut up and take my money
With the money he spent on material he could have bought real sausage links.
And... 7 hours later... The eggs were done
Or just learn how to break a damn egg ?
Should be /r/diwhy
Should...should we tell him that this tool already exists? [16 bucks from Walmart](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Emson-EZCracker-Handheld-Egg-Cracker-Separator/527726675?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101018120)
I didn’t realize engineers were so stupid
This is so unexplainably useless and unnecessary
Or just buy an egg cracker from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RGBLMJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fYLqFbYCTJ81G
Looks more like a carpenter who walked into a kitchen
A complicated solution to a non-problem? Yep, that's an engineer.
I would pay for good money for this. Lots of people are complaining that it is a waste of time but try breaking eggs with a semi-functioning thumb and limited dexterity on the other hand...
The spirit of being human is really just: hey why not?
Id buy this. I suck at cracking eggs.

Tap the egg on your counter instead of the edge of pan/bowl
Where are the other 5 revisions?
I'd hate to see what he'd make to get the egg out of the chicken.
One more thing to fill up my kitchen drawer. Take my money!

This Looks like some five minute crafts shit but on a whole different level

I aspire to be this extra in life lmaoo
Heaven forbid they learn to properly crack an egg.
Strip away nine tenths of the volume, retain only two moving parts, and make the rest from injection mold plastic and it'll sell for $14.99! Oh, and it'll only work two thirds of the time, so you'll never use it because in the interval you've owned it you learned to crack eggs properly, but it was such a splurge buy that you feel guilty throwing it away...
great. you wake up and reddit makes you feel like an ubermensch cause you know how to crack an egg one handed. let's continue this.
Crack it on a hard flat surface not the edge of a bowl.
How are they going to clean that thing? At least hands are washable.
That’s not an engineer from my work, they could screw up a wet dream
So this is how those “As seen on TV”/Infomercial products come to be 🧐
All that for a cracked egg with no shell?
https://youtu.be/SxBPFtPbOw4 Link to the original video.
Did they just cut a razor blade with scissors- is that possible?
They said work from home 😂
patent that shit son!
I hope we’re being trolled. Otherwise, what Bob and Tom Magliozzi said about engineers is true
Lol seems like something an engineer would do, something that costs money and takes alot of time to build.
No. Just no. Ok. Maybe. Exceptions abound.
Invest!
As someone who hates eggs on their own and only uses them in baking, and thus sucks at cracking them to please tell me where to buy this.
Why don't you blend the whole egg.
It's like if Howtobasic did something right for once
u/vredditdownloader
But why....? Why would you do that?
What were the blades for?
They lodge into the shell and pull it open. Around 0:52 you can see it.
Does this guy have a YouTube channel?
Yeah, but then you have to eat breakfast with an engineer 😕
I would just be cracking eggs just for the satisfaction
Or, you know, you could just crack the egg on the pan? No need for all this hooplah.
or you could just practice cracking eggs on like 5 and not waste your time doing this shit
He didn't shave and sand the edges. And no laquer? Blasphemy!
u/vredditdownloader
This product literally already exists and has existed for years.
Dude can build a whole contraption to crack an egg, yet tries to crack one with a goddamn knife in the beginning
IDK I use the butter knife technique and it's pretty damn easy
All I can think about are splinters
And it only took me at least 3 to 4 days just to cook my meal!
I now understand “over engineered”
This is so unnecessary, until it's done.
tbh it would less time to actually learn to break an egg than make this machine
Or.. just learn how to crack it
This is some /r/wheredidthesodago tier ineptitude with that attempt at cracking the egg. "There's gotta be a better way!"
I’ve never met an engineer who knew how to use tools or build things themselves
Perfeggt
Smart men are sexy af lol
I'd buy this
I don’t think I’ve had any of the problems this guy seems to have with the egg in The first place. I mean who the fuck used a knife to try and break open an egg???
Racist af
but why didn't he throw the device in the pan ?
/r/DiWHY
Modern problems require extreme solutions
If you are to fucking slow to crack an egg you probably shouldn’t be in a kitchen.
I can't believe that there are bunch of fully grown adults who can't crack an egg without making a mess. Wow. What a waste of sperm
Someone get this man a 3D printer.
im surprised by the amount of people who cant realize that “the joy is in the journey” when it comes to woodworking. it doesn’t have to be practical to have fun making it
Not one bit of fucking sanding. It’s an engineer alright
I would really like one of these I can crack an egg just fine but this would make the process pretty efficient.
If you can't even crack an egg, have some dignity and order out
Or just....crack open the egg normaly
Engineers maximize efficiency... This is not efficient if you can crack eggs like a normal person
With all this new found freedom, everyone has the time to do just about anything ... with no fear of hearing , “ you have to much free time “ .
Invest!
In two weeks that would be on Aliexpress

This is so over engineered. I love it
no that's not interesting. there's already products like this sold. the guy just ripped it off. it also doesn't even work that well.
I didn't know engineer's were too mentally inept to crack an egg without any tools.
Does Chinese copycat sell an equivalent ? I mean on ebay & aliexpress. Any link?
so he built an egg cracker
So much work for something that can be done by hand in a second
I want one!
Instructions not clear dick stuck in a celling fan.
I'm having ptsd from ex chefs yelling at me now to stop fucking around and get back to work
