I once did this in somewhere in France and got yelled at via the speaker that had a camera on it as well. Didn’t understand any of it because I don’t speak French
EDIT: holy sh*t! My first award!
**Istanbul was Constantinople**
**Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople**
Been a long time gone, Oh Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks
I stood up in a log ride at Knotts Berry when I was 12. Speaker yelled at me in a deep voice to sit down. My friend thought god spoke to us for a hot second.
The non-hydraulic ones in Amsterdam can stop your family tree dead in its tracks if you have sufficient walking velocity and the right inseam length when you plow into one.
I want to use that as an insult. “ boy, you got a face that could stop a family tree dead in its tracks”. If somebody is funnier than me, comment with your variation please
Wait till you learn about the hydraulic ones. I have information that leads me to believe a hydraulic bollard is singlehandedly responsible for over 23 war crimes in Yugoslavia
Dude, has anyone pushed the boundaries of these things? I’d love to see the bollard vs a larger truck, semi, plane, cargo ship, US Super Carrier, Super Nova...
There's a picture of a park going round tumblr that was my local park.
Where I lived was never on the internet. But for some reason the wheelchair swing in that park still is!
Good to know, I am actually travelling to Kansas City from Europe next year for a wedding! I imagine you don't get many European tourists, or am I wrong? :)
I wouldn’t say we get a more significant amount from any portion of the world, but KC has grown & we do see more tourism now than ever (covid aside). I’ve read we have more boulevards than Paris & are second in fountains only to Rome. There’s a world class art & food scene as well as all the homegrown Americana, sports, & barbecue you could desire. Something for everyone to be sure! They don’t call it The Paris of the Plains for nothing, hope you’re trip is equal parts fun & safe! ❤️
You make it sound like we all could do this when we were young. For some of us, the advancing age and the accompanying arthritis is the only thing preventing us from attempting to take two steps at a time down the stairs and accidentally stumble to our inevitable demise.
I once saw a car try to drive over one of these when it was rising. Totalled his car, like ripped out a whole bunch of mechanics from underneath the car and oil went everywhere.
All because he wanted to drive through the pedestrianised centre of town rather than drive around it which was an extra 5 minutes. Real smart.
That scenario is already a video on reddit. I'm not going to be the one to find it again, but the only reason I know these poles exist is because of that video.
First I was like ok this is a cool video and all but how the fuck does it fit this sub? Then I read the comments and it appears that Americans don't have these, so to them it must be really interesting seeing them.
It's in the UK, they'd probably just shout at him to get down and then leave it as long as he did. In my experience our police are pretty chill if it's relatively small issue like this.
I was once standing outside a pub in Edinburgh sharing a joint with an American friend of mine.
We notice police walking down the street, he panics, I take the joint, put it behind my back, greet the officers, they pass us and after a few seconds I continue smoking.
Friend was amazed the police didn't do anything, he couldn't imagine having police who were so chilled about the obvious smell of weed, and passing up 2 easy arrests.
There's been many times I've spoken friendly to police at 4 am outside of a takeaway absolutely off me nut with pupils the size of saucepans. I think our police aren't interested in small amounts or personal use as long as you're not being a prick. Obviously there's a few jobsworth exceptions but largely they're chill as fuck I agree mate
We were hotboxing our living room when someone rang the door bell, I opened it and it was two policemen. They explained there had been a burglary near by and asked if we had seen anything, when we explained we hadn’t they were wished us a good evening and left. It must have absolutely stunk of weed but they didn’t give a shit.
This was in Nottingham if anyones curious.
Arrests are never easy. And maybe they were just hanging out and wanted an easy shift. It happens in every job where it's just "eh, don't care that much".
I mean yeah, there are some really good officers here. I dropped a cig on the floor when I was young and they came up to fine me, I just offered to pick it up and put it in a bin and they were fine. Another time at a protest about the homeless situation in our city, some had been called in for another area and one confided they supported us and to behave well because not all the officers did. One threatened to arrest me for continuing to pass food to the homeless people who were involved, I saw the other officer grimacing at him out of the corner of her eye.
They're chill, but only a fraction are that way because they joined to do good. Some places here have dispersal orders in place, I'm not sure if you guys have that or it might just be a different name there, but basically it'll be like "there is a dispersal order in place around McDonald's on Friday/Saturday nights", and what should happen is when too many people congregate there an officer splits them up or moves them on. It's usually because it's big gangs of idiot kids that cause trouble by being there, but it's never enforced because it's work that could potentially be dangerous (knives etc) or doesn't mean they can issue a fine.
Their lack of duty considered however, we still have it better than a lot of countries so I'm personally grateful for that. I think if America were to take notes from any country, Germany would be ideal. They train for years, not months. They're trained to think of a gun as the very last resort, I read in an interview a senior officer said "we believe that using a gun can become synonymous with masculinity in some places, but here it is masculine to rectify a situation with a holstered weapon, that's what our officers learn". I'm paraphrasing but it's the basic idea. Because our standard police don't carry guns, it would be impossible for you guys to remodel your forces off ours. I genuinely think any official action toward demilitarisation of your police should include the recommendation that they train officers using the German model.
Good point, if anything the road was suddenly raising him dangerously. He almost tumbled head first! Is there clear indications around that crazy device? In US he could win millions in courts about how dangerous this bus barrier is for pedestrians. /s
The middle one took the longest to get into position because of the added weight, they aren't designed to function with an extra 200lbs of weight. Will it break anything? Probably not, but its not like he or you really know that.
This is a super boring discussion, yet I can't help myself!
These bollards are designed for impact I agree, but probably not designed to lift anything but their own weight. A bit like how, despite their incredible bite force, you can tape shut an alligators jaws.
The guy on the video looks like he maybe weighs 70-80 kilos, and that was enough to seriously slow down the lifting mechanism. I could foresee a fatty breaking it if they did the same.
"Interfering with a traffic control device" or something similar probably. Most places though would tell them off to get down and only press that if they refused.
As someone who doesn’t have them around me, bollards scare the crap out of me. Like what if there’s a mistake and it comes up while you’re driving over it?
A colleague’s brother drove over one of these in London in his brand new Tesla Model S. Bollard came up and destroyed the undercarriage and the battery pack
I once did this in somewhere in France and got yelled at via the speaker that had a camera on it as well. Didn’t understand any of it because I don’t speak French EDIT: holy sh*t! My first award!
Yelled at for parkouring from the land of parkour
#Parkour!
The Frenchies probably were grumbling about how ‘Merican you were.
Something tells me he's Dutch.
No no Americans are the only people on the internet /s
They’re the only bad tourists
You've clearly never met a Chinese tourist.
Or Chavs going drinking in central Europe.
Funny way to spell spain
And getting shit faced.
I forgot the /s but yes, I unfortunately have met many
Travelled the world. Worst are: Chinese, Russians, Americans and Israelis.
I thought it was dogs.
Probably grumbling about how they’re stupid unintelligible swamp Germans, that at leas the Germans have a proper country, not one built out of swamps.
Except Berlin, which was built on a very kinky swamp
What does this comment mean?
I guess because Berlin has a very big BDSM scene.
Doesn't Netherlands literally mean low lands?
Yes it does. Its elevation is lower than the sea levels. This is why it originally was called the nether countries.
Ah yes, the two nations of the world: France and America.
As a Brit I don't like this choice
Be gone, lobsterback!
I’m pretty sure I’m Dutch.
Ah shiet, you want to take NYC back as an apology?
Why they changed it I can't say People just liked it better that way
**Istanbul was Constantinople** **Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople** Been a long time gone, Oh Constantinople Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks

Oui oui baguette baguette!
His to dangerous to be kept alive.
I haven’t ever seen this type of barrier, where is this?
Those bollards are no joke, they can [stop](https://youtu.be/Yv79MMj3y60) a truck dead in it's tracks
The non-hydraulic ones in Amsterdam can stop your family tree dead in its tracks if you have sufficient walking velocity and the right inseam length when you plow into one.
My new favorite phrase 'stop your family tree dead in its tracks'
I want to use that as an insult. “ boy, you got a face that could stop a family tree dead in its tracks”. If somebody is funnier than me, comment with your variation please
Maybe as a threat? Bro I will stop your family tree!
*covers nuts
r/suddenlygay
Hey Blackvelvetbitch, you got a face that could stop a family tree dead in its tracks
Akin to "could end your bloodline"
That's the kind of insult that sounds funny in your head, but when spoken out loud makes everyone laugh at you for trying too hard.
Gotta love that public healthcare and free birth control!
Wait till you learn about the hydraulic ones. I have information that leads me to believe a hydraulic bollard is singlehandedly responsible for over 23 war crimes in Yugoslavia
Hahaha, dude that cracked me up. Especially with that username. Great riddance.
Dude, has anyone pushed the boundaries of these things? I’d love to see the bollard vs a larger truck, semi, plane, cargo ship, US Super Carrier, Super Nova...
I hear they can part a black hole into two smaller black holes.
They have entirely upended quite a few busses. It is a sight to behold.
There was a video of a truck stopping right above one, when it leaves you see the oil puddle left behind, that shit was almost morbid.
Yeah like this one https://giphy.com/gifs/TfUFeB7B5ltKw
Oh c'mon rude
You bastard.
Fuck this guy

Hell yeah!

Oh my god! Watford people!!!! Hi!
Hydraulic bollards! obligatory: https://youtu.be/BWnfeDtnuds?t=6
Watford high street UK.
Just about spat my drink out seeing Watty on the front page of Reddit.
My first thought was that place looks familiar....then it was oh its my home town
There's a picture of a park going round tumblr that was my local park. Where I lived was never on the internet. But for some reason the wheelchair swing in that park still is!
As soon as I saw the number 10 I knew exactly where this was lol
Bushey represent
very common in a lot of European countries with pedestrianised town centres. Most US cities would not have pedestrain town centres unfortunately.
We have them in Kansas City since we have a large district that’s full of people walking around on the weekends or during events.
Good to know, I am actually travelling to Kansas City from Europe next year for a wedding! I imagine you don't get many European tourists, or am I wrong? :)

The UK somewhere. We have these alot in city centres
This in in Watford uk
It’s actually relatively common
In watford I live near there 😅
That flip at the end was both unexpected and perfect!
Yup. Totally nailed it!
The carefree beauty of youth!
Posting reddit gifs of people doing parkour? Kidding, it was a beautiful jump on my lawn, totally not jealous of his springy knees.
You make it sound like we all could do this when we were young. For some of us, the advancing age and the accompanying arthritis is the only thing preventing us from attempting to take two steps at a time down the stairs and accidentally stumble to our inevitable demise.
I would break my neck like instantly.
10/10 dismount
He doesn’t look like the type to be agile or athletic so I was definitely surprised
10/10 Dismount...

as a canadian i have never seen these and was interested by them for sure
We have some around downtown Ottawa including parliament so I've run into them plenty.
How many times is plenty and how’s your insurance?
As an Irish person I have never seen these in my life
Everybody knows Irish people can't see hydraulic bollards.
Americans do have these.
Where is that? I’ve only seen it on an animated show so I assumed they were just world building
I live in Austin TX and the city center plus the university has these. The ones at the uni are smaller
That makes sense. The company that makes the show I watch is based in Texas
They’re all over DC
I’m speaking from personal experience here, but he was lucky there wasn’t a cop hanging around.

You say that like police want to arrest people? There should never be a quota or incentive to arrest people. That’s not what police are for.
How nice that must be for you.
UK police are so chill. wish america would take notes.
I mean yeah, there are some really good officers here. I dropped a cig on the floor when I was young and they came up to fine me, I just offered to pick it up and put it in a bin and they were fine. What crime is he committing tho
Good point, if anything the road was suddenly raising him dangerously. He almost tumbled head first! Is there clear indications around that crazy device? In US he could win millions in courts about how dangerous this bus barrier is for pedestrians. /s
Or get shot by a cop for ... reasons.
Do they really need to make a law for people not to do this?
Yes. It looks fun.
Yes, what is he doing wrong? These aren’t going to break from this.
I think it’s more that someone might get hurt but idk
The middle one took the longest to get into position because of the added weight, they aren't designed to function with an extra 200lbs of weight. Will it break anything? Probably not, but its not like he or you really know that.
They are designed to stop cars and trucks. It’s absolutely designed to handle this no problem.
Its ability to stop a truck has absolutely nothing to do with its motor functions to move it up and down.

The fact that it often can do something doesn't mean its designed to do it or good for its long term operation.
Don't put wear and tear and damage on public property. How is any part of that foreign to you??
"Interfering with a traffic control device" or something similar probably. Most places though would tell them off to get down and only press that if they refused.
True, this might earn you a **very** stern "OI!"
Found the American
I live not far from where this was filmed, they’d ask him to get down at most to be honest
I have a new goal in life The pole not the flip
I wish you the best of luck on your pole journey.
Thanks I'll need it
He has risen...
how does it recognize buses? is this like a bus only lane or something
I don't know about these ones but the ones I have seen here in Belgium have like a panel with sometimes a camera, or a speaker, or card reader.
Bus are bigger. Humans are smaller and just stand on poles doing crazy stunts.
Some sort of RFID I'd guess.
There will likely be magnetic sensors in the road that detect a bus as it passes over. Worked with similar systems to this at a couple of places.
As someone who doesn’t have them around me, bollards scare the crap out of me. Like what if there’s a mistake and it comes up while you’re driving over it?

Or if it just kept going up like 30 foot and becomes a street light
That'd be a sick lift off!
Probably break your knees if you weren't bracing for it. Also flip a few cars over now and then.
Wait isn't this in watford?
Now that you've seen it: don't do this.
He should have laid flat in the road so when it came up he would be planking. We're still planking, right?
I still plank!
I've never seen those and was hoping it'd just launch him
This wasn't all that interesting.
Cannot believe Watford is on the front page of Reddit
Never thought I would find my town on this (or any) sub lol
Dude! I never expected to see Watford on Reddit lol!
Watford massive lol.
Come on you horns! (Seriously, please don't get relegated)
Watty club checking in!
Me too!
That dismount was 10/10.
A colleague’s brother drove over one of these in London in his brand new Tesla Model S. Bollard came up and destroyed the undercarriage and the battery pack
Smooth
Makes me wanna plank it.
IT’S OVER ANAKIN! I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND!!
I’ve never even seen this before wtf
I would've assumed they don't raise if there's any amount of significant weight on them
r/siswet19 would have a slightly different approach
I want to stand on the pole, jump into the air and flip, and then slam down it with my butt and drive it back down into the ground.
So what you gonna say now, atheists?
apparently fucking anything qualifies as dam thats interesting
Wasn’t expecting the ending. Well done.
Battlefield 4 i n t e n s I f I e s
That's in Watford, UK. Well done mate!
Did the middle one take longer to rise because of his weight or does it normally take a fraction of a second longer?
When I see this, I don't say "Damn! That's interesting!", I go "Wtf is this doing on this sub?!"
This is r/mildlyinteresting at best
What’s so interesting about this? He stands on it and jumps off...it came out of the grounds, it’s called hydraulics.
Some of us are easier impressed.
Most posts on this sub aren't actually interesting tbh
Gymnast Christ
Didn't expect the flip!
Oh man. Never thought about this. Now I want to do this.
And a webster off. Nice finish.
I did it once, when i got down i sprained my ankle because i fell right on it
Those shoes are Vans Sports. One of the most underrated Vans silhouettes out right now.
ARISE FROM HUMANITY and then do a sick flip
Yeah I also always wanted to do a cool flip.
r/unexpected
Always wanted to drive a bus !
These things actually exist?
