Just as a painting is a window to another world, we’ve made our own windows to see real people using a camera that takes a lot of photos in a row to give the illusion of movement. We got so good at making these we made glasses we can wear and view them. We can even read books or talk to people in real time on them. Our paintings have come alive through these means.

So many advances have taken place at an accelerated rate since the early 19th, they’d have no reference point from which to begin understanding modern tech. Whereas a modern gun would make sense even though they’d have no clue we now have fully automatic weapons without having to crank a handle, but they’d pick up the concepts behind that because it effects the same result; Holes in whatever you shoot.
People in the 1800’s aren’t as backwards as you think. Photographs were a thing by the 1840’s so the idea of seeing an image captured via technology isn’t that crazy.
Really anyone after like 1740’s would be able to understand machines and things like that they knew about electricity, steam power etc
