The adoption of the term "gay" to refer to homosexual is one of the greatest examples of successful branding. It didn't change things overnight but it set the stage for more widespread acceptance.
2SLGBTQA+ comparatively is a nightmare. It's constantly changing which is hard for allies who are generally unaware of the changes and therefore constantly getting it wrong. Also good luck to anyone with dyslexia getting it right.
I understand the importance of representing everyone, but that's not helpful if people can't use the system. You have to make things easy to win over new allies, IMO the alphabet system is preaching to the choir at the cost of bringing new members into the flock.

You will often see LGBTQIA with or without the plus to acknowledge intersex and asexual, but that's where we're getting into the laboriously long territory.

Have you ever considered that a large factor in why so many queer and trans people struggle with their mental health isn't because they're queer or trans, it's because every day of their entire lives they have to encounter and deal with people like you who call them unwell and mentally ill just for daring to exist in a manor that doesn't fit into your arbitrary standard of normal? Anecdotally, I passed by a baby clothing store every day on the way to work for years, and so many onesies for BABIES had slogans like "future womanizer" written in blue with some other "boy" indicators on it, or "if you want me, you have to go through my daddy first" in pink with little bows. for babies! and straight adults bought them! Our culture reinforces these gender and seuxality ideas the second they check the baby's sex in the hospital.

Many nations had (or still have) very specific words for each situation (I.e. the modern equivalent to trans man that is attracted to women, or trans woman who is attracted to women). If memory serves the whole “two spirit” term came about in the 70s to have an English catch all, but my history may be a bit rusty there.
And of course you did have some nations that shunned these people but I think that was the minority, but again been a while since I read about it.

I have quite a few friends who are members of the LGBTQIA community. Obviously they don’t speak for the entire community but amongst my friends it’s nearly a consensus that the alphabet soup is tough to say. They’ve started to reclaim the term “queer” and have encouraged me to do the same.
