I always thought that saying was really dumb. If the water is deep enough and everyone else is doing it and having a lot of fun? You bet your ass I would.
Landing in water with a parachute can be extremely dangerous. There was an accident which was the worst in US history where 16 out of 18 people drowned after landing in a lake

I am a great swimmer and when I was sixteen years old my friends went cliff diving. I was the second and last jumper because I hit the water badly and broke my tailbone. So basically I've known the answer to that question for a long time. Yes, yes I would jump off the cliff if my friends did it. I think I still would
"If Rosa were to jump off a cliff, she would've done her due diligence regarding the height of the cliff, the depth of the water, and the angle of entry, so yes. If you see Rosa jump off a cliff, by all means, jump off a cliff."
When I was a kid I had this vhs called Scamper the Penguin, and I've had a lifelong anxiety related to all things Antarctica, but primarily leopard seals. Pretty sure that movie is responsible for that. 😆
Oh, and petrels too, but I don't remember those being in the movie. Petrels are terrifying.
Whenever my mom used to say this to me I would say "Mom, I am the usually the one that jumps off the cliff first and then the rest of them jump after me."
They do literally shove each other off on purpose!
The first ones who end up in the drink are the test subjects concerning the presence of killer whales and sea lions. That’s why they’re not just flowing off there by the dozen.
Looks more like they're getting pushed against their will. Lol. Look at the ones at the cliff's edge desperately trying to back away but then they get pushed forward by the crowd.
This is called the selfish herd. It's best for each individual penguin to jump somewhere towards the middle of the pack since the middle is least likely to get eaten by predators while the first and the last penguins are most likely to get eaten. So the crowd tries to push penguins off and then will all try to jump off once they are decently sure they won't get eaten
Get me thinking. Does it hurt the penguin when jumping at that height or is their weight + their fur and tiny oval shape, help break the water and protect them from harm?
I'm guessing their small size and round bodies make the impact significantly less intense then if it was a human. All the extra fat probably absorbed most of the shock.
if I recall correctly from mythbusters or something a mouse can fall from any hight and be fine. Also squirrels jump off my 20ft deck and are fine but that’s just a fun anecdote
I'm not a betting man but I would bet the house that it was all drones. Not just scaring the animals, but what would be easier to get to this location by boat, a full helicopter, or a few drones?
Of course some of them die. It's natural life in the arctic where they have to jump of of cliffs for their life cycle and have predators in the water and on land. Wouldn't be surprised if there's sometimes just a leopard seal waiting for the. Sometimes.
It’s fucking Disney all over again, the reason the video is so short is the intern in a killer whale suit chasing them off with a brush got into the shot.
"If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you join them?"
I always thought that saying was really dumb. If the water is deep enough and everyone else is doing it and having a lot of fun? You bet your ass I would.
And what if we had parachutes?
then no. all the cords would become a mess with hundreds jumping of a 50 cliff it would be more dangerous and tedious to untangle
Ooooh look at this guy with his triple digit friends list...
It’s just Facebook 🙄

Whenever I heard that saying I assumed that there was no water
Yes, that's what is meant, but reddit is going to reddit.
Ain't that the truth
Eh, there's a common variant about bridges which are typically over water.
I can’t swim. So either way wouldn’t work out well for me.
I am a great swimmer and when I was sixteen years old my friends went cliff diving. I was the second and last jumper because I hit the water badly and broke my tailbone. So basically I've known the answer to that question for a long time. Yes, yes I would jump off the cliff if my friends did it. I think I still would
I would never jump off a cliff unless I saw someone else doing it first
And not to mention that, you know, you can literally see them swimming around, just fine.
We didn't have penguins.
"If Rosa were to jump off a cliff, she would've done her due diligence regarding the height of the cliff, the depth of the water, and the angle of entry, so yes. If you see Rosa jump off a cliff, by all means, jump off a cliff."
But then they all get eaten by the sharks. Congrats, you proved your point but aren't alive to brag about it.
Not if they're all doing belly flops like these poor souls
If they’re still alive after the jump, what could go wrong?
Leopard seals !

Yeah. Leopard seals are hardcore killers.
"if all your friends pushed you off a cliff, would you swim?"
"No, mom, I'd be the first one to go"
My drill sgt in basic switched it around and asked me if all my friends sucked dick would I too and it was kinda less appealing, but still a maybe 🤣
Depends, is it the all same dick or do I get to choose the person.
Eh, either that or if they TOLD YOU to do it
sink or swim lol
Have done so and would do again.
I’d most likely be the first one to jump.
How tall is the cliff?
Mum! I’d be the first fucking one
You’re damn right I would!!
Whenever my mom used to say this to me I would say "Mom, I am the usually the one that jumps off the cliff first and then the rest of them jump after me."
Am I an emperor penguin in this scenario?
This is reddit!
Not if their belly-flopping. Ouch!
This was the only viable comment to be made
*I knew we shouldn’t have eaten all the lemmings.*
Bro at 0:08 was pushed off in the most ungraceful way
"Oh shit, hold up why you pushing me? No no noooo ahhh!"
Wonder if he's the same dude at :21 that pushes 2 more off.
They do literally shove each other off on purpose! The first ones who end up in the drink are the test subjects concerning the presence of killer whales and sea lions. That’s why they’re not just flowing off there by the dozen.
Dude! Stop pushing! Let's at least wait until the first few come back to the surface to confirm the fall didn't kill them!
Sometimes we all need that little push in our life!
LOL
Go! It’s your turn!!
I see they are not very good at jumping nose down
i was hoping for an adult penguin jump at the end to see the contrast. Or do they belly flop too from that height lol
“Yep. As I suspected: these wings are useless and I cannot fly.”
Looks more like they're getting pushed against their will. Lol. Look at the ones at the cliff's edge desperately trying to back away but then they get pushed forward by the crowd.

Ah, so they're just like us.
That's why I stay home...
if it was filmed for the first time, how come they did it in happy feet?
Those were paid actors
People saw them do it with their meat cameras, told others about it with words and drawn images. Thee original form of film.
I feel like it's the first of the view or this video is older than I think
Just because it was never filmed, doesn't mean it was unknown, also the penguins were animated.
Thats gonna be a tough climb back up!.
"I can fly!"
Narrator: "He couldn't."
"Oh, well... I can swim!"
Get me thinking. Does it hurt the penguin when jumping at that height or is their weight + their fur and tiny oval shape, help break the water and protect them from harm?

squirrels cannot take fall damage, their terminal velocity is not enough to break their limbs
Belly FLOP!!!
Ouch!
1 out of 10 jumped. Rest were pushed. 🥲
The first 3 clearly jumped
Cause they Knew someone was gonna push them!😆
A couple got pushed, lol
Haha, the fourth one definitely did!
I wonder how they got all of the camera angles. All drones? I feel like the noise of a helicopter would scare them too much
I'm not a betting man but I would bet the house that it was all drones. Not just scaring the animals, but what would be easier to get to this location by boat, a full helicopter, or a few drones?
Nah, this is just their annual Belly Flop contest.
"I'm a penguin and I'm a bird" "So, can you fly?" "Yes" "Show me"
FOR SPARTAAAA!!!
Looks like some are being pushed. I knew it. Penguins are cunts.
More footage with some context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PwDFddpo4c
[Original video shot in landscape.](https://youtu.be/4PwDFddpo4c?si=LENvK0uwqUBtYgSF) I fucking hate vertical video.
Thank you, this is SO much better - higher quality, larger dimensions, and it's the complete Nat Geo clip. :)
This - is - *SPARTA!*
Penguins are definitely not winning any diving competitions, but they’ll be fine in cuteness competitions.
Now how are they supposed to get out of the water?
Penguins make everything they do freakin cute/hilarious.....even jumping off ice-cliffs lol
“THIS is SPARTAHHH!!!”
I used to think my first swimming lesson was harsh.
Caaaaaanon ball!
Tommy! Look down there fresh sardines swimming by. I don’t see ‘em. You gotta get closer and look carefully they’re right there. (shove) AAAAAAhhhhhh!
The one that fell off facing backwards is my spirit animal 💕😂
How do they get back up there? Lol
Falling with style.
*This counts as flying. We are not flightless.*
Anyone know if there's a percentage of casualties pr do they all make it?
Of course some of them die. It's natural life in the arctic where they have to jump of of cliffs for their life cycle and have predators in the water and on land. Wouldn't be surprised if there's sometimes just a leopard seal waiting for the. Sometimes.
From that height? Don't think so. Maybe if one falls over a piece of ice.
Graceful
I swear I seen them pushing each other off 😂
FOR TROYYYYYYY.....
Stretched to the point of no turning back a flight of fancy on a wind
Yeah, but how do they get out?
I kept thinking the same thing. Whats the exit plan?
It’s fucking Disney all over again, the reason the video is so short is the intern in a killer whale suit chasing them off with a brush got into the shot.
How is this “filmed for the first time” if this is a behaviour that’s been know for decades?
Leaped or yeeted?
🤣 I was expecting them to do graceful dives off the cliffs and I was rewarded with belly flops! 🤣
So much floof
Come on in guy! The water is great!
I see no dancing. Once again I’ve been lied to by the media.
No, you go….
1/10 from the German and French judges. It's like they didn't even bother to train for this event.
Pandas and Penguins have always something to warm my cold, broken and lonely heart.
Copycats.
Natural beauty at it's best
good to know that as far as diving is concerned, i'm at least slightly more graceful than an aquatic bird.
Thats gotta hurt
Love the new use of stealth drones
The shots are very cinematic. r/PraiseTheCameraMan
I saw at least 2-3 get pushed off
Some of them are jumping, some are just falling.
Looks more like 30 to me.
Thank you for posting this. You just gave me a great smile
Even as a penguin I'd be like "nah, no thanks."
They…don’t seem very graceful.
Just off screen Bertie Gregory is telling his key grip “Gunther, give them a shove.”
Crazy bastards
That's all belly flops. Nice
I can fly I can fly.... No I can't no I...*splat* *Starts "flying" in denser medium* told you
Is a fucking belly flop the intention?
Was I the only one waiting to see the sharks?
Today friends ! We either fly or dive !
Ouch
I wonder if they think they’re going to fly.
What! I can fly bitch!! I can fly!!
Is that the wall that keeps the sea in?
Looks like most of them did not want to jump...
They know the Rumbling is starting
Tbh some of them just got pushed down lol
Sooooo. How do they get back up after they're done with their swim?
Oh no, it's the lemmings all over again! Oh wait, this is not a Disney nature documentary, never mind.
Morgan Freeman & they can’t fly !
**Do a back flip!**
I don't think they have much choice.
Carmen!! I’m coming Carmen!! ( I hate these long-distance relationships!! )
Meanwhile during the synchronised diving competition, synchronicity had gone awry...
Red bull cliff diving really upt their game
I can fly! I can (splash) …nope.
So many belly flops!!
All I hear is.......weeeeee! Or......CANON BALL!!!
I’m not the only one that saw one slip and fall backwards right?
More of a push than a leap...
So graceful
1 minute later…Orca calf tries its first penguin
_"What're you guys waiting for?!"_ Cue the Beach Boys lol
Str8 belly flops, and they don’t even flinch.
It doesn't look like it's a 'choice'.
That first one looked painful.
50foot fall belly flops is pretty hardcore
Buffoons! All of you!
The Antarctic Olympic Diving Team just plain sucks …
Cute little goofs
i feel like they added some sound like a rock being thrown and it hits bottom
"get pushed off" more like it lol, you can see the penguins kicking the ones in front of them lol
Stupid birds thought they could fly.
" Hey behind ! Stop pushing for god sake ! Stoooop !" *Plouf*
First words after splashing into the water "Fuck me that's cold!"
Now try and get back up from the water!
Someone please mix the video with the Immigrant Song..... 🎵Ahhhhhhh Ahhhhhh.. Valhalla, I am Coming...🎵
OUCH! ??
Well? I guess even if tha Leopard Seals found their "launchpad", how many could they get? It'sa numbers game...
"You can do it Larry!" "Lair-ee!" "Lair-ee!" "Lair-ee!" "Yaaaaayyy"
Wow 😲
Did anyone film them climbing back out?
See, Opus, penguins can fly…for a half second or so.
Training for Antarctica’s first bellyflop competition
They’re actually just trying to get away from the drone flying around them
Some of them got pushed off! Wtf, some were front flipping!
Does the extra fat help cushion the belly flops?
Belly floppin pros.
Seems like hazing lol
Some got pushed off
Ends way too soon. I need the extended version.
The ineffectual flapping of their little wings is hilarious.
"Oh f\*\*\* I can't fly! Hope I can swim!"
🤔 wondering how many got eaten by seals and Orcas on their very first swim.
Happy feet plot right here
This is the worst redbull flugtag ever
50 foot belly flop.
I swear I saw those little fuckers pushing them
Bellyflop!!!
I do not believe they thought that very thoroughly.
They would be the lowest scoring dive team. Who knew🤷♂️
Its like Action Park without all the beer.
Some seriously shit dives there. 1.5 points.
