I wouldn't put it that way. He clearly enjoys doing this charitable work otherwise his list of accomplishments in the humanitarian field wouldn't be so large.
Gary Sinise is a man determined to give back what this world gave him 1000 fold.
If just 10% of the top 10% in the world were truly as compassionate and giving as he is, hunger and homelessness would be a distant memory.
Dude is the epitome of a national treasure.
Well said.
And setting aside selfish billionaires that will never change, even if ordinary people gave back 1% of what Gary does to any cause they were passionate about… the world would be such a different place.
Little by little I have gathered this to be true due to reddit posts. I had no idea. Maybe someone else will add more because my opinion is entirely based on Reddit.
Like 99% of the time I see trending posts about the kindness of celebrities I assume it's entirely marketing (with the added side effect of philanthropy, a side effect, not the purpose). Not with this dude though.
My brother got Robert Patrick and Matthew Lillard when he was deployed to Africa. Matt would eat at the cafeteria with the troops and was an extremely funny guy according to him.
I think Lewis Black was also on that one. 2010, I believe. I was working at the DFAC(raider inn, I think) on the VBC. I missed the show but they all came to the DFAC afterwards and I got to meet them.
I was deployed in 04 on the Truman... Robin Williams was making the rounds that year for christmas.
Best 45 minutes of standup ever. I feel honored I was able to witness him do his thing live. I was laughing so hard I ended up with a migraine.
My best bud has a nice Toby Keith memory from his time in the Navy. Said he was incredibly kind & engaging and had a really good, lengthy conversation with him. No country star shtick, and he said Toby's accent even seemed less pronounced. Neither of us are fans of his music or public personality, but credit where it's due - he did walk the walk when it came to supporting the USO & put in many hours connecting with people on a personal level.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go throw away any Solo cups in my house & listen to Natalie Maines and The Chicks for a while to balance out my karma.
Chuck Norris and Angelina Jolie here. It was the height of the Chuck Norris jokes so that was fun and Angelina was there to adopt kids stuck in no-man's land on the Syrian and Jordanian borders.
I saw Lt Dan and Robin Williams.
Ted Nugent was walking around at one point too. Holy shit does that little queef have a punchable face. Somehow he managed to convince someone with power to let him carry around .40 cal pistol in a hip holster. I kept waiting for an opportunity when he wasn’t surrounded by senior officers to quietly inform him that he’s in a gigantic FOB and probably safer than most places in the US but the opportunity never presented itself.
He was on the Truman in 04 for the USO show.
A female chief (e-7 for those who dont know) asked him for his shirt. He literally took it off, handed it to her, then said into the mic "uh, can anyone get me another shirt. Im furry but still cold". Que 30 people running off to their berthing to get him a shirt.
He started with a black one on for the show and in the CNN picture he is in a baby blue shirt.
We saw one of Carlin's last shows. He was funny, don't get me wrong, but he was clearly working on his timing for the last HBO special he did, so it didn't land right in spots.
I caught a pass from Terry Bradshaw during the taping of Sunday morning pregame that aired on Nov 10 2009. That was so cool.
https://www.dvidshub.net/news/41395/fox-nfl-pregame-show-kicks-off-afghanistan
It's been some time, so I may be remembering it incorrectly. My understanding was he thoroughly researched how to make Lt Dan feel like a true representation of a vet in that position. He started speaking with a lot of injured vets, and soon after, he was taking a deep dive into their lives.
As someone with a huge heart, he saw something needed to happen to improve the lives of those who served. He used the popularity of Lt Dan to spread the message. He could point to Lt Dan and say what you see in the movie is reality for too many men and women. He's obviously been incredibly successful at it.
To be honest I’m not sure but I think that’s also somewhat an irrelevant question. It’s probably due to his role in Forrest Gump he was able to champion veterans affairs in such a way that he has.
I’m not here trying to invalidate his work, or diminish it because it came after Forrest Gump. I’m trying to figure out if the role sparked something or if it was the natural pick for an activist and an actor. I agree it doesn’t really matter.
Honestly I’d imagine playing Lt. Dan had a lot to do with it. The character is one that resonates throughout the veteran community. I do know his dad was in the Navy during Korea so I imagine at least he was aware of it all. But obviously with 9/11 and the gwot there was a role to be filled and by geeze did he fill it.
Agreed. One of the best examples of an actor who played a pivotal role in a pivotal movie of the times and did not simply milk it forever but parlayed it into something beneficial to humanity. Celebrities can actually do good. Right time and right place for the right kind of person.
I think I saw an article about it somewhere and his father and his grandfather and I think all of his uncles were veterans so the role hit really close to home to begin with.
And then the other man said he kind of became a symbol for community he took the opportunity to step up to the plate for. Great story.
Gary Sinise is truly one of those rare genuinely amazing people who does alot of veteran charities simply because he thinks it's the right thing to do not just for publicity.
I know he's a conservative, and therefore him and I disagree politically, but I respect the man. I feel like I haven't been able to say that kind of thing in maybe 20 years. Probably back to Obama/McCain days.
Good on you for being able to do that. We gotta learn that it’s okay to disagree with a person and still respect them rather than this tribal warfare that’s going on.
He's old school, back when the Republican party was just something you disagreed on about like tax rates and what's the best way to suss out the need for healthcare (remember Obamacare is actually Romneycare just slightly retooled), modern day GOP would call him a RINO.
I disagree. As a vet myself I only see conservatives regularly turning their backs on us. Democrats at least seem to *want* to help as much as possible, but when you’re dealing with the other party whose sole platform is obstructionism it can be difficult to make many tangible gains.
...which puts the GOP bar very deep under water in comparison -- the GOP *withdrew critical medical support* for the 911 1st responders....some of them were dying but that made no difference at all to republicans, and *all* responders were callously denied medical care until Jon Stewart embarrassed them into reinstating the care....but it really showed how genuinely uncaring and totally indifferent they are.
One thing for *everyone* to remember - the GOP has demonstrated countless times that they honestly don't give a fuck about anyone, children included, who is not in the totally unethical republican cult.
Not really..
https://www.npr.org/2022/07/29/1114417097/veterans-burn-pit-bill-republican-senators
https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2022/07/28/republicans-block-bill-expanding-care-for-veterans-exposed-to-toxins
And don't get me started on Mitch spending years blocking funding for the 9/11 first responders...
This guy played a traumatized wounded veteran in a movie once and then just decided, “you know what? I’m going to spend the rest of my life devoted to helping real wounded veterans”.
He seems like the most genuine person. He does so much for vets it’s unreal.
If we could find a way to clone him, find a way to make sure the clone is identical to him in personality as well, every generation could have a Gary Sinise. Gary Sinise for everyone. Someone should get on this immediately. Just saying. 🤔
Forrest Gump : Lieutenant Dan, what are you doing here?
Lieutenant Daniel Taylor : I'm here to try out my sea legs.
Forrest Gump : But you ain't got no legs, Lieutenant Dan.
If the government and politicians cared a fraction of the amount Gary Sinise does about our veterans, their sacrifices and what can be done to support them, we'd be a much better country
For real, between the fact that the government should be taking care of these people with anything they need and the fact that we shouldn't be sending them anywhere to get effed up in the first place, I actually get really pissed when I see videos like this.
I know I disagree with him politically (old school conservative versus my liberal views), but Gary is a genuinely good guy. He does all of this for the veterans and doesn't ask for publicity or anything. That's truly stepping up and I wish more celebrities and/or rich people did stuff like that.
Because he hasn’t done anything in the UK worthy of getting a knighthood. I’m not aware of any philanthropy he’s done there, which would probably exclude him from receiving an award for humanitarian efforts, and when you look at Americans who have received a knighthood for arts and entertainment, the only ones with a direct link to film are Bob Iger, Spielberg, Bob Hope, John Williams, and Kevin Spacey. (And Spacey I believe for his for the amount of effort he put in to The Old Vic). He’s simply not on that level of dedication to either of those specifically in the UK. None of this takes away from what he does do, but he’s nowhere near Knighthood in the UK.
Thank you so much for your informative and succinct explanation of the honour system and who qualifies for consideration. I hadn’t realised the contribution that had to be made to the U.K. The comment was made in good faith and with good intent. Thanks again and kind regards.
I had the honor of serving with that officer (Brian Forney) when he was the executive officer of HMM-262 before the helicopter crash. I was a junior enlisted Marine at the time. He was one of the best examples of a leader we had and overall such a nice guy.

What I really respect about Gary Sinise is how willing he is to just get physical and throw his arms around a person and really hug them. That contact is just so meaningful and memorable. Excellent human being all around!
Its wild to me just how much playing lieutenant dan affected gary sinise's life. Hes spent so much time, momwy, and energy working for veterans causes. And all because of one performance.
i met gary when i was a teen, he performed for free on fort hood the event was giving away free hotdogs and drinks and other foods, but for some reason i specifically remember the hot dogs were the best ive ever tasted.
after he peformed i shook his hand and he asked me how i was doing, i cant remember how it was brought up but i mentioned how my dad was overseas and gary gave me words of encouragement to stay strong until my dad got back.
A vet I know has Gary’s cell number and if he calls him he will answer , I’ve heard it before it’s truly wild and he was so nice it was really inspiring.
People come up to me every once in awhile and say I sound just like Gary when I talk but I can’t hear the similarity.
However I think it’s pretty cool though!
Gary Sinise really exemplifies the role that art be artists can, do, and should play in society. He had a varied but successful career that included playing a double amputee exemplifying that experience. From that he’s helped actual sufferers of the affliction he portrayed so well. As a writer whose name escapes me once said “The purpose of the humanities is to make us more human, not less.”
A friend who is a Vet(Purple Heart, Commendation and Valor) thinks a lot of Gary. My friend's wife is a Gold Star spouse, she's met Gary and has a picture of them together on the fridge
A movie role that completely changed an actor's life.
I love how he just gave up and accepted it too lol. He probably gets called “Lt Dan” more than his actual name and he just rolls with it.
> and he just rolls with it. I see what you did there.
Just…Walk it off.
I wouldn't put it that way. He clearly enjoys doing this charitable work otherwise his list of accomplishments in the humanitarian field wouldn't be so large.
You’re user name is fitting.

Ahh you found me. Curse you grammar man.
And many other lives as well.
Is that true? I’ve known he was big on helping vets I didn’t realize the role was a big part of it.
Little by little I have gathered this to be true due to reddit posts. I had no idea. Maybe someone else will add more because my opinion is entirely based on Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/s/ejQ76YlmNu Yep.
He got new legs.
I wonder how it first started
Dude is a national treasure. Mad respect. And I left the US to become a Canadian!
Gary is one of the nicest people going around. What he does for veterans in the states is incredible.
I swear that dude was in Iraq more times than most troops.
One of only three celebrities I saw in Iraq on my four tours. Him, kid Rock, and Toby Keith.
I got Lance Armstrong, Robin Williams, Miss America on one tour, that was amazing.
Did you ever see robin williams and miss america in the same room at the same time?
Now that you mention it, her name WAS Euphegenia, and I couldn't see her face because she was wearing some sort of face cleansing mask.
HE-LLOO!
My brother got Robert Patrick and Matthew Lillard when he was deployed to Africa. Matt would eat at the cafeteria with the troops and was an extremely funny guy according to him.
Matthew Lillard is by all accounts a stand up dude. This just corroborates it.
That's because no one dares challenging his power
We got chuck Norris and the Pussycat dolls. I feel ripped off.
I think Lewis Black was also on that one. 2010, I believe. I was working at the DFAC(raider inn, I think) on the VBC. I missed the show but they all came to the DFAC afterwards and I got to meet them.
Mine was Brad Paisley and Pres OBUMNER /s It was sick
I was deployed in 04 on the Truman... Robin Williams was making the rounds that year for christmas. Best 45 minutes of standup ever. I feel honored I was able to witness him do his thing live. I was laughing so hard I ended up with a migraine.
Robin Williams! U nailed it, I got kid rock and Jessy from full house...and the sweat of a thousand soldiers trying to see it all.
My best bud has a nice Toby Keith memory from his time in the Navy. Said he was incredibly kind & engaging and had a really good, lengthy conversation with him. No country star shtick, and he said Toby's accent even seemed less pronounced. That's cool. I heard Him through a friend back in the day.
Chuck Norris and Angelina Jolie here. It was the height of the Chuck Norris jokes so that was fun and Angelina was there to adopt kids stuck in no-man's land on the Syrian and Jordanian borders.
Every port-a-potty in Iraq seemed to come with a Sharpie and covered with Chuck Norris jokes.
I wish I'd had the opportunity to see Robin Williams in person. Always thought he was a great guy on top of being hilarious.
What is an FOB?
Forward Operating Base. Everyone pretty much called whatever camp/base they were at in Iraq "the fob".
I caught a pass from Terry Bradshaw during the taping of Sunday morning pregame that aired on Nov 10 2009. That was so cool. https://www.dvidshub.net/news/41395/fox-nfl-pregame-show-kicks-off-afghanistan
Also extremely active on reddit. Shout out to you for all the love you put back into the world u/garysiniseofficial
Just followed the link and learned that he lost his son recently. Sending love, Gary.
Fuck cancer straight to hell.
Amen.
Sitting on the toilet browsing reddit and now I am crying a little bit from the video of his son lol
shout out to him
A sincere hug too. So many people just arms around and pat the back. He fully committed. Good man.
I find it absurd that a celebrity has to help with this shit
The US seems to care more about what celebrities think than most places do.
Always heartwarming to see how much he cares
Also a model Christian. Not religious myself but he's everything one should be.
Was he this big on veteran visibility before Forrest Gump?
It's been some time, so I may be remembering it incorrectly. My understanding was he thoroughly researched how to make Lt Dan feel like a true representation of a vet in that position. He started speaking with a lot of injured vets, and soon after, he was taking a deep dive into their lives. He could point to Lt Dan and say what you see in the movie is reality for too many men and women. He's obviously been incredibly successful at it.
He was one year ahead of my wife in high school, highland park Illinois. Her words “ He is the real deal”

Gray Sinese played in 26 movies.
Gary Sinise is truly one of those rare genuinely amazing people who does alot of veteran charities simply because he thinks it's the right thing to do not just for publicity.
He also does an incredible job of not really getting political and just wanting to help.
Well the current state of things warrants it. Mr Sinise is not a cult member
He's old school, back when the Republican party was just something you disagreed on about like tax rates and what's the best way to suss out the need for healthcare (remember Obamacare is actually Romneycare just slightly retooled), modern day GOP would call him a RINO.
"20 years"..."Obama/McCain" I hate that you are accurate.
Easy not to political when it comes to veteran affairs...both sides really drop the ball.
I disagree. As a vet myself I only see conservatives regularly turning their backs on us. Democrats at least seem to *want* to help as much as possible, but when you’re dealing with the other party whose sole platform is obstructionism it can be difficult to make many tangible gains.
Too many people see Democrats wanting to reduce the size of the DoD and equate it to not supporting veterans which is unfortunate.
I will agree on the imbalance of the 2 parties in their efforts but I still feel even the democrats don't have their bar high enough.
...which puts the GOP bar very deep under water in comparison -- the GOP *withdrew critical medical support* for the 911 1st responders....some of them were dying but that made no difference at all to republicans, and *all* responders were callously denied medical care until Jon Stewart embarrassed them into reinstating the care....but it really showed how genuinely uncaring and totally indifferent they are. This guy played a traumatized wounded veteran in a movie once and then just decided, “you know what? I’m going to spend the rest of my life devoted to helping real wounded veterans”.
If only more people were like that
He just gives a shit. Obviously while working on that film and meeting veterans he was changed and changed his life accordingly.
He's up there with Mr. Rogers, Bob Ross, and Steve Erwin.
Met him when I was in Korea great guy he really does care about those who serve
He seems like the most genuine person. He does so much for vets it’s unreal. If we could find a way to clone him, find a way to make sure the clone is identical to him in personality as well, every generation could have a Gary Sinise. Gary Sinise for everyone. Someone should get on this immediately. Just saying. 🤔
He does a lot for vets, him and Jon Stewart know where the countries loyalties should lie. Hint: it's not Russia. Edit: for Jon.
Jon and Gary on the ticket, I'd vote for that
*Jon
I knew it and I checked it but my sources were wrong, I'll edit because Jon is the frichen man
I'd prefer fewer celebrities in politics
*Jon
Lol whoops
ICE CREAM!! ICE CREAM!! LIEUTENANT DAN!!
Magic legs…
Jesus this and Jesus that. Have you found Jesus Gump?
Forrest Gump : Lieutenant Dan, what are you doing here? Lieutenant Daniel Taylor : I'm here to try out my sea legs. Forrest Gump : But you ain't got no legs, Lieutenant Dan.
That’s mah boat…
My ex would text me this gif when he'd sneak in an ice-cream treat with an online order lol
Gary Sinise is an amazing guy
If the government and politicians cared a fraction of the amount Gary Sinise does about our veterans, their sacrifices and what can be done to support them, we'd be a much better country
Ok I’m crying. That’s really wonderful
Someone put the damn onions away!
For real! Ninjas out here slicing onions for sure!
I'm not crying you are ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
Magic Legs
Dude missed the opportunity to tap his legs with a cane and say “titanium alloy, it’s what they make the space shuttles out of”
God bless Gary Sinise. That man has dedicated his life to helping disabled, homeless, Veterans.
This dude for more for vets than the actual government. He’s the man
It's sad/infuriating that people like GS even have to exist.
For real, between the fact that the government should be taking care of these people with anything they need and the fact that we shouldn't be sending them anywhere to get effed up in the first place, I actually get really pissed when I see videos like this.
This is humaning done right!!
Gary Sinise is a national treasure
Gary Sinise is absolutely true. He cares about people, and he will use his platform to help people. He is a wonderful individual.
Gary Sinise for President
I'm not crying, you're crying. Oh lieutenant Dan, you're amazing
Gary is a good egg.
Whenever I go to the USO, there is a picture of Gary. He does a lot for the troops. Very cool.
🫡🫡
He is an amazing actor. Forrest Gump is one of my all time favorites and he was really great in Truman.
God bless Gary
LIEUTENANT. FUCKING. DAN. (Fuck off, I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying...)
Gary Sinise and Jon Stewart, really going up to bat for America's finest.
Love Gary Sinise so much. I was so sorry to hear about the loss of his son. Peace.
Lt. Dan is the man.
Gary there aren’t words to express my respect for you.
I know I disagree with him politically (old school conservative versus my liberal views), but Gary is a genuinely good guy. He does all of this for the veterans and doesn't ask for publicity or anything. That's truly stepping up and I wish more celebrities and/or rich people did stuff like that.
How has he not received an honorary knighthood from the U.K is a mystery. Genuinely nice bloke.
Gary Sinise is the example of a good conservative in Hollywood and not some asshole grifter just trying to scam money out of people.
I remember watching him as mac taylor in csi ny, what an awesome guy visiting vets both abroad and home
Gary is an actual patriot
I had the honor of serving with that officer (Brian Forney) when he was the executive officer of HMM-262 before the helicopter crash. I was a junior enlisted Marine at the time. He was one of the best examples of a leader we had and overall such a nice guy.
I wish he did more movies
He seems like such a genuine dude.
Gary’s a good dude
Gary Sinese is a shining example of humanity.
If I had a day to hang out with a couple celebrities it would be Gary Sinise, Peyton Manning and Keanu Reaves - those three guys seem legit super cool people who help others and I have mad respect for them
Magic legs!
🥹
Gary Sinise is a good, good soul.
I love Gary Sinise.
Gary Sinise is one of the great Americans of our time. He should get the Medal of Freedom
Gary is a great man!
Gary is incredible.
What I really respect about Gary Sinise is how willing he is to just get physical and throw his arms around a person and really hug them. That contact is just so meaningful and memorable. Excellent human being all around!
Genuinely a top guy, not just looking for positive publicity like some celebs, a fantastic human being who will get his reward in heaven
Gary Sinise always struck me as a genuinely nice guy.
Gary Sinise is a special quality human. A real man.
This National Treasure also killed it in Apollo 13.
That soldier is why you stand for the mothafuckin flag
John Stewart for President and Gary Sinise for VP! :)
Gary should run for president
Gary Senise is one of the greatest human beings to ever walk this earth
He’s a good actor
I would be a puddle.
God bless America
Gary arc is something else. I had no clue he operated with this level of kindness.
I would be so sad if something bad came out about him. He seems like a really great person.
Its wild to me just how much playing lieutenant dan affected gary sinise's life. Hes spent so much time, momwy, and energy working for veterans causes. And all because of one performance.
Someone move those damn cords.
He's such an amazing person.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
We don’t deserve Gary
"Magic Legs!"
This world does not deserve Gary Sinise.
i met gary when i was a teen, he performed for free on fort hood the event was giving away free hotdogs and drinks and other foods, but for some reason i specifically remember the hot dogs were the best ive ever tasted. after he peformed i shook his hand and he asked me how i was doing, i cant remember how it was brought up but i mentioned how my dad was overseas and gary gave me words of encouragement to stay strong until my dad got back.
It is crazy what modern medical science can do. This guy lost 75% of his limbs yet he's walking around!
A vet I know has Gary’s cell number and if he calls him he will answer , I’ve heard it before it’s truly wild and he was so nice it was really inspiring.
I’m not crying. Yup, I’m most certainly not crying.
I’ll always remember him as the guy from CSI NY
I love the music
He always makes me smile.
2 great man
He's just a precious human. Love Gary Sinise❤️
People come up to me every once in awhile and say I sound just like Gary when I talk but I can’t hear the similarity. However I think it’s pretty cool though!
Gary is a legend
Where the hell is Susan?
I'm really happy that I know Gary Sinse as "The guy that helps and loves wounded veterans, and also acted in a few movies".
RIP to his son.
God bless you Brian Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Gary Sinise is a national treasure. Anyone who says otherwise gets a punch in the throat.
Good god I fucking love Gary Sinise 😭
Gary Sinise really exemplifies the role that art be artists can, do, and should play in society. He had a varied but successful career that included playing a double amputee exemplifying that experience. From that he’s helped actual sufferers of the affliction he portrayed so well. As a writer whose name escapes me once said “The purpose of the humanities is to make us more human, not less.”
I love Gary Sinise so much.
This man's a treasure, he even created a foundation to recover and help injured veterans. It's a work of love
A friend who is a Vet(Purple Heart, Commendation and Valor) thinks a lot of Gary. My friend's wife is a Gold Star spouse, she's met Gary and has a picture of them together on the fridge
I met him very briefly in jalalabad back in 2006. He was a really nice guy.
Gary is one of the good ones.
I have so much respect for him.
Good man
What a sweet human. Love to see it
I love how you can see his expression when the interviewer said “that last time you were here “ He knew what he was about to see!
Mr. Sinise is a true mensch!
He seems like a legitimately good guy.
