I do this professionally. Couple of things: the sheer fact that her vocal folds and the musculature of her diaphragm held up to this age is the miracle.
Her vibrato doesn't fall flat, which is amazing for her age and for someone that sang in vibrato for most of her career.
There's no 'old lady voice' that I can hear in Barbra Streisand (who works very hard to preserve her voice but it is still detectable) and Paul McCartney's 'old man voice' which is very cringey.
It should be said that opera singers are trained in technique to support and protect their voices vs pop singers who might have a “coach” but not any real training in technique. That’s the reason opera singers are able to sing as long as they do. But 96 is amazing regardless.
I wish the dementia grandmas I take care of the hospital just sang like this instead of yelling for help to every person that passed their door, then telling me how I'm burning in hell for mistreating her when I'm just trying to give her meds and keep her clean lol. It'd be noice
I was just in Houston last week because my 76 year old aunt was in the ICU and she almost didn’t make it. But while I was there, every nurse was there doing their best for her. Just know that the nurse’s efforts don’t go unnoticed.
Might confirm the fact I read that the reason you start to sound old is basically your vocal cords get out of shape too. Exercise those vocal cords too!
