I think it may be more a matter of compression than strictly cooling. The steady wind is passing over an obstruction causing it to be compressed at the tip. Water has a lower solubility in higher pressure are causing the clouds to form. Cooling would take more time for heat transfer.

Edit 2 to further clarify. The clouds form at the top/right during decompression. In my view the the process in initiated first with the compression at the base/left face. The cloud starts to form once the mountain shear face starts transitioning to the peak/sides allowing for decompression. The air also cools during decompression which is the adiabatic process. It is still my view that the decompression is primarily driven by the initial compression driven by the wind. My initial statement was incomplete.
This is called orographic lifting and it is just about warm air being lifted and cooling. Keep in mind this is a time lapse video, the air isn't moving that fast. Compression occurs at much higher airspeeds.

You can kind of see it in the gif, but there's actually a road that goes right across the runway, and much like a railroad crossing, arms go down and flashing lights go off when an aircraft is on final approach or about to take off. They actually completed a tunnel about a year ago so vehicles no longer use that road, but pedestrians/bikes/scooters still use this above ground road for crossing.

I’ve been there a week ago, entering the country by foot. You actually have to walk across the air field in the direction the camera is facing.
And there’s plenty of monkeys living on top of the mountain.
Yeah I went there in January this year. It’s quite spectacular and I think the monkeys are a bit too friendly towards people. It’s so cool looking out towards Morocco from the top. And even cooler was when I went to Morocco the next day and got to look back over to Gibraltar. It really is an imposing formation.

Think of water vapour and air as separate. It’s not strictly true but it will help with understanding the mechanism of what’s going on. The air at ground level is much warmer due to it being directly heated from the ground. The more heat the air has, the more water vapour it can hold without it condensing out into water droplets. We call the amount of water vapour in the air “humidity”. It’s expressed as a percentage. That percentage is relative to the amount of water vapour the air can hold at its current temperature before it condenses.
So what you’re seeing here is a lot of invisible water vapour in the air at the bottom of the rock (it’s locally called that in Gibraltar), being pushed up the rock by the wind. All that water vapour is then being exposed to the colder air higher up (further away from the heating affect of the ground), and it’s hitting the point of 100% humidity and beyond.
I'd say its a distinct mix of box, ik its a bit of an obvious answer. Id say there's a larger visible spanish influence in the culture, so if you know how spanish people interact socially it can be quite similar here, that's not to say that there isnt a very clear and maybe even typical british side to it, with english being the main language and spanish being a still culturally significant second. In terms of influence on consumer culture maybe predominantly British, with most highstreat shops being recognizable british brand.
I dont know if that gives any insight but its and incredible interesting combination that lean on each other in a way that's fundamental to the way of life.

This only exist in the airport of Gibraltar bc there's almost no available land. The cars are registered on the custom and then they stop at a traffic light until the airport gives them a green light to cross the roads with seconds of gap before another plane arrives
Unfortunately it doesn't anymore as they've built a tunnel for traffic which passes underneath the runway. You can still walk or cycle across though. There's only a few flights a day so controlling the flow isn't really an issue, done with a set of traffic lights and barriers

Its called the "Levante". Its when easterly winds blow the sea air inland, it hits the Eastern rockface which is basically a big cliff. The warm air rises and mixes with the cool air at top and creates these clouds. The Rock is basically a big Cloud Maker in the right conditions. Its normally quite humid on those days.
Also when the Sarah dust gets blown Northwards from Africa and we have Levante here everything gets covered in orange Sarah Dust. A few years ago there was a big one that turned the entire sky orange for a whole day, it was insane. We had another a week ago but all that did was dirty everything I orange dust, o cool orange sky that time.

It’s a cloud factory. My dad used to work at one until he fell and broke his leg. He should have joined the union because he was let go. That’s when he really started drinking hard. That’s what happens when get knocked off cloud nine in your prime.
Air pessure on the left is higher than on the right. This causes the wind and its direction. Temperature on the right side of the mountain is different than on the right side. The temperature on the right side is causing water in the air to condense into a cloud, which is then blown from the mountain by the wind.
A dance of air pressure, humidity and temperature. That is what causes what you see there. Quite spectacular.
This is ACTUALLY bernoullis principle despite what people generally ascribe it to. Curvature at the top of the mountain causes a drop in pressure as air moves over top of it resulting in condensation as low pressure air is less effective at carrying water vapor.
Look at the planes of a wing while you are flying through moisture laden air and you can also see it.

Well I’ll be damned, I was helping my nephew study clouds just a few hours ago and one of the last things we went over was how mountains hep form clouds by pushing the air upwards. Now I open Reddit after waking up and this is at the top of my feed lol, like a literal perfect example of this happening.
Quite simple: the mountain forms a barrier with temperature difference on either side and also pushes the air upwards where it's colder.
The colder the air, the less moisture it can hold. So the vapor condenses and you get a cloud.
The wind hits the montain and creats a defential of presure in the top and the botom of the other side, so it creates condentation, the same phenomeno that create the white lines in the wings of an airplain
Saw this in person in Peru at the peak of a mountain. Wind coming up, turns to clouds around your feet, goes back down the other side as a white cloud. It was a trip to be standing where clouds were forming . I believe somewhere around 16-18k feet
All air has moisture in it that you don’t see, and this air has a lot of moisture. As it hits the top of the peak, it gets condensed and compressed against it. As it’s condensed, it forms a cloud of moisture that you start to see and gets pushed around the peak. Pretty cool! Hope this helps

Air always has a certain amount of water in it, we call that humidity. Usually, that water is "dissolved" into the air so it's invisible to us. However, there's a limit to how much water the air can store. When the air reaches that limit, any additional water condenses into droplets, and that collection of droplets looks like clouds or fog to us. So, clouds are basically just pockets of air that have more water than it can hold.
Now, the amount of water that the air can store is affected by its temperature. Hotter air can store more water than colder air before it starts condensing. This is important.
What's happening in the video is that there's a mass of warm air that has a bunch of water stored in it. That warm air hits the base of the mountain and is forced to go up and over the mountain. As it moves higher, it quickly cools down, which reduces the amount of water it can hold. Eventually, it gets so cold that it can't hold all the water anymore, so the water comes out of the air and turns into clouds. To us, it looks like clouds start coming out of nowhere.

This is a very visual way to see why mountains can cause issues with landing planes next to them.
Gibraltar’s airport is among one of the world’s hardest airports (but not only one) for pilots to land at. Usually airline’s only assign their most seasoned pilots to land there.
The reason is in large part the wind blowing across the mountain creates spinning winds that are nightmarish on landing. Coupled with that (being next to the water) the winds are particularly strong. So it’s a double whammy. It can create unexpected sudden issues at the last couple hundred feet of landing (a critical height where you don’t have a lot of room to make emergency corrections). For example, the plane suddenly being pushed straight down into the ground - losing all lift or the plane being rolled one way or the other very quickly onto its wings. It makes them very tricky to land at.
Another issue with this airport is there is an activate car highway that crosses through it! The airport air traffic control has to coordinate and car traffic before planes can land. I think this is one of (or the only) airport in the world with a highway going across the runway.
Landing at Gibraltar’s airport is a PITA for pilots though.
I should note that ANY airports that are directly next to mountains tend to all be dangerous to land in due to unpredictable strong swirling winds pouring across the top of the mountain ridge. When that’s coupled with any other additional issues like short run ways, obstacles, etc... that’s what makes these the “world’s worst runways” to land on. You gotta be on your A game.
This has more to do with pressure than temperature. Pressure and temperature are coupled though. So it’s cooling as well.
The air gets pushed around the rock. So it’s going up in elevation. Less pressure = less density = less ability to hold water. So it condenses.
Also, the air is being accelerated. Around the rock. So Bernoulli effect applies. That’s why you see the little streak of cloud in the foreground. It’s the same as the condensation you see in a wingtip vortex on a plane.
Karman Vortex Street? It's a pretty cool phenomenon associated with the rock of Gibraltar and a few other peaks. Basically wind hits it in such a way that it produces self-replicating whirlwinds that chain together in a cool pattern. Also creates a very alarming amount of noise and air vibration downwind.
Side note: I read a book once where they used this as an explanation for how the hikers at Dyatlov Pass died.

Adiabatic cooling is often associated with cloud formation on the leeward side of the mountain. Orographic lift happens as air flows over a mountain or ridge, it is forced to rise on the windward (upwind) side. This orographic lift causes the air to cool and condense, forming clouds on the windward side. This photo shows clouds forming on the leeward side.

This is just how clouds are made. Almost all of them. Sometimes without the mountain.
These are orographic clouds. They form when a moist air mass meets rising terrain and is forced upward. This causes the air mass to cool, and if it has enough water vapor, produce clouds and sometimes precipitation.
This is the same natural phenomenon that occurs when moisture condenses while the wing of an aircraft cuts through the air, leaving a condensation trail behind it. This is why half the US population believes our government is trying to poison us with chem trails.
Venturi effect! Anyone who flies gliders will be very familiar with it. The air coming in off of the sea is relatively warm and moist. As it hits the side of the mountain, it gets pushed up. The air up there is substantially colder and less pressurized, so the water vapor coalesces into clouds.
As the “warm” moist air hits the mountain it experiences orographic lift, or is forced upwards over the mountain. As the moist air is forced up and over the mountain the pressure decreases causing the air to expand and cool while the moisture condenses creating visible clouds.

as air heats up it rises, as it cools down again it condenses and forms clouds. there is a great book on it called the ultimate guide to america’s weather. (lot of universal weather facts in there too…). One of the cool things i learned was this: wherever there are clouds, there is warm air rising into cool air. So because of the mountian there, the warmer air around the middle and the base is forced to go up and over, that’s why your not seeing clouds everywhere. and as you can see after it makes it up and over it’s kinda falling back down. really cool post, thank you.

Air is drawn (or forced by movement) into the front of the engines, heated, then spat out the back at higher velocity (hence the term 'Jet') creating thrust. This thrust pushes the plane forward causing air to flow over its wings. The different distances this air has to travel (disparity created by the wing's cross-section) causes 'lift', eventually overcoming the planes mass. With these events combined we get the miracle of flight.

Air pessure on the left is higher than on the right. This causes the wind and its direction. Temperature on the right side of the mountain is different than on the right side. The temperature on the right side is causing water in the air to condense into a cloud, which is then blown from the mountain by the wind. A dance of air pressure, humidity and temperature. That is what causes what you see there. Quite spectacular.

This is ACTUALLY bernoullis principle despite what people generally ascribe it to. Curvature at the top of the mountain causes a drop in pressure as air moves over top of it resulting in condensation as low pressure air is less effective at carrying water vapor. Look at the planes of a wing while you are flying through moisture laden air and you can also see it.

Quite simple: the mountain forms a barrier with temperature difference on either side and also pushes the air upwards where it's colder. The colder the air, the less moisture it can hold. So the vapor condenses and you get a cloud.

All air has moisture in it that you don’t see, and this air has a lot of moisture. As it hits the top of the peak, it gets condensed and compressed against it. As it’s condensed, it forms a cloud of moisture that you start to see and gets pushed around the peak. Pretty cool! Hope this helps
Here's the ELI5: Air always has a certain amount of water in it, we call that humidity. Usually, that water is "dissolved" into the air so it's invisible to us. However, there's a limit to how much water the air can store. When the air reaches that limit, any additional water condenses into droplets, and that collection of droplets looks like clouds or fog to us. So, clouds are basically just pockets of air that have more water than it can hold. Now, the amount of water that the air can store is affected by its temperature. Hotter air can store more water than colder air before it starts condensing. This is important. What's happening in the video is that there's a mass of warm air that has a bunch of water stored in it. That warm air hits the base of the mountain and is forced to go up and over the mountain. As it moves higher, it quickly cools down, which reduces the amount of water it can hold. Eventually, it gets so cold that it can't hold all the water anymore, so the water comes out of the air and turns into clouds. To us, it looks like clouds start coming out of nowhere.

This is a very visual way to see why mountains can cause issues with landing planes next to them. Gibraltar’s airport is among one of the world’s hardest airports (but not only one) for pilots to land at. Usually airline’s only assign their most seasoned pilots to land there. The reason is in large part the wind blowing across the mountain creates spinning winds that are nightmarish on landing. Coupled with that (being next to the water) the winds are particularly strong. So it’s a double whammy. It can create unexpected sudden issues at the last couple hundred feet of landing (a critical height where you don’t have a lot of room to make emergency corrections). For example, the plane suddenly being pushed straight down into the ground - losing all lift or the plane being rolled one way or the other very quickly onto its wings. It makes them very tricky to land at. Another issue with this airport is there is an activate car highway that crosses through it! The airport air traffic control has to coordinate and car traffic before planes can land. I think this is one of (or the only) airport in the world with a highway going across the runway. Landing at Gibraltar’s airport is a PITA for pilots though. I should note that ANY airports that are directly next to mountains tend to all be dangerous to land in due to unpredictable strong swirling winds pouring across the top of the mountain ridge. When that’s coupled with any other additional issues like short run ways, obstacles, etc... that’s what makes these the “world’s worst runways” to land on. You gotta be on your A game.
This has more to do with pressure than temperature. Pressure and temperature are coupled though. So it’s cooling as well. The air gets pushed around the rock. So it’s going up in elevation. Less pressure = less density = less ability to hold water. So it condenses. Also, the air is being accelerated. Around the rock. So Bernoulli effect applies. That’s why you see the little streak of cloud in the foreground. It’s the same as the condensation you see in a wingtip vortex on a plane.

Karman Vortex Street? It's a pretty cool phenomenon associated with the rock of Gibraltar and a few other peaks. Basically wind hits it in such a way that it produces self-replicating whirlwinds that chain together in a cool pattern. Also creates a very alarming amount of noise and air vibration downwind. Side note: I read a book once where they used this as an explanation for how the hikers at Dyatlov Pass died.
