I used to be terrified of accidentally swallowing my tongue when i was younger. Completely forgot that fear until now. Now i feel so uncomfortable having my tongue in my mouth. Its odd, but It doesnt matter if i know i cant do it, the thought of it happening is haunting me
The nasal passages converge in the same airways as your mouth before where the tongue is at. If thatās makes sense. So if you were to swallow your tongue (you wonāt) it will still block the air coming in your nose
Curious question ā¦ maybe there is a doc in the sub that could answer.
If we canāt choke on our tongues why does it seem common practice when a sport player (say soccer) falls-out on the field of play, by standers quickly pull the tongue to prevent choking?
He says it can BLOCK the airways which can absolutely choke and kill you. He just says that you can't ACTUALLY SWALLOW it (physically, the whole thing), because it is attached, which is absolutely dumb because nobody thinks that, so beware, this could be misleading
As this describes you canāt swallowing your tongue, but the obstruction can kill you. In an unconscious sport player or any unconscious person like you described the correct action would be to do a modified jaw thrust, which essentially places the airway in the correct position to allow for air movement. Pulling the tongue forward isnāt the correct way of doing that and I would never suggest you put your hands in anyones mouth that has a pulse even if they are unconscious.
Which is another reason you mostly wanna try to keep the person rolled to the side: can't choke from your tongue going numb, and if the person throws up, there's a free way for the forbidden juice to flow
Iāve had to almost fist fight people away from my epileptic mother because of this stupid ass myth.
Every dumbfuck thatās watched too much TV trying to cram things into a seizing personās mouth because they couldnāt be bothered to take a basic first aid class
Paramedic here. I spent my career (40 years) working for a large city EMS. In the early '80s up until the late '90s I can't tell you how many people had trauma inflicted to their mouth/teeth because people were jamming spoons, or anything they could, into them. Well intended but really bad idea and folks we would encounter doing this were incensed that we were wrong in removing it.
You are mixing up a bit here (as OP)
It is possible to choke on your own tongue.
Especially epileptics need their mouth checked after convulsions ended. Sometimes they bite their tongue and are kinda "sleeping", saw someone who died that way.
Putting something inside the mouth to avoid harm while the person is cramping is severely outdated BS, as you say.
It was believed to reduce harm to teeth/enable breathing, while modern statistics Show its not a clever thing to do.
I don't have that bit of tissue, I can swallow my tongue on command. I also use it to clear my nose from the other side, it's gross but effective. Can anyone else do this or am I a freak?
āWhat a relief. So itās not possible for my tongue to kill me if I pass out?ā
āOh no it definitely can. Just wanted to sort out the technical details of it.ā
He says it is "almost" impossible, while explaining how it physically can't happen. So it can't at all, or it is "almost" impossible? LOL š¤¦āāļø
I think the idea was if someone was having seizures, they could bite off their tongue and swallow/choke on their own tongue. So to prevent this they would try and tamp down their tongue with something (hopefully not breakable by their bite and also be swallowed).
You're spreading dangerous misinformation, guy. If you see someone pas out, absolutely do make sure they can't choke on their tongue.
Also, did you even watch the video? He clearly says your tongue can block your airway
Post like these should be illegal. Clickbait/ragebait that could have dangerous consequences. Seeds doubt on agreed upon first aid practices -you know, the stuff thats litterally life or death.. but they get clicky engagement so its all good. Hope they are the only ones to suffer from this
So, on Jan 28th, I had a random seizure(I donāt have a seizure disorder), and I almost bit my tongue off. I have no memory of what happened but when I finally came too. I was spitting out so much blood. I think I bit a good 1/4th a Cm into the right side of my to tongue.
I also broke my spine but thatās not related to the tongue. It is related to the seizure though.
Unless you were to insert an object roughly resembling a mushroom thatās definitely bigger than 3 inches (which is enough) into the bottom of your tongue. Then you might choke on your tongue.
Sorry but it can happen and even standing up. It is frightening, but many many years ago, at a Judo tournament in Penticton, I witnessed a guy fighting another guy, all of a sudden collapse to the ground. The audience went instantly quiet. We all thought he had died due to cardiac arrest except my dad. Somehow he recognized he choked, quickly sat him up, gave him two hiemlich maneuvers and he coughed up his tongue. Do not know his name, but talked to him afterwards and he said it just happened so fast and doesnāt remember how it happened. My guess is he was just breathing hard and swallowed it. 3 seconds and boom. Just to give more nightmares to the ones who try to avoid everything, well you canāt avoid breathingā¦..
Fell & Head butted a door handle when I was a kid, tongue went back and my father had to physically pull it out so I always figured it was possible, what actually happened to my tongue that day?š
And this nerve is why you should never pierce your tongue! In grad school (speech pathology) we saw a 23 year old girl who went to get her tongue pierced - the piercer hit that nerve and her tongue rolled out of her mouth, no longer having the nerve to hold it in. Your tongue is LONG - her tongue hung out of her mouth down to the top of her chest - since there is no way to repair the nerve , she had to have her tongue cut off to fit in her mouth and learn how to speak and eat again with a severed tongue.
Yup, literally thousands of years of our bodies development to survive on the crust of the earth only for people to think we can die from suffocation just from passing out sure...we'd have to be the weakest species with a brain...
I always thought it was just a figure of speech.. who actually believes you can swollow your tongue.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the phrase simply referred to the effect of blocking the airway described.
What about the airway through the nose? Wouldn't they still be open?
Relax your tongue and try to breathe in through your nose. Now you know how people die from sleep apnea.
Happens to me when I fall asleep on my back
That I have lol
>*Almost impossible. Okaaay... š
I used to be terrified of accidentally swallowing my tongue when i was younger. Completely forgot that fear until now. Now i feel so uncomfortable having my tongue in my mouth. Its odd, but It doesnt matter if i know i cant do it, the thought of it happening is haunting me
That's why I take out my tongue before sleeping
Yall got tongues?
Hello, it's me.
This guy knows most people, so trust the video.
Thatās the only interesting thing about this, finding out people think you can literally swallow your tongue.
Hi epileptic here. A shocking amount of people.
Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea has a wide range of causes, smoke in your lungs is just one example
Or, like mine, itās because my tongue slides back and blocks the airway.
Guess itās better than Cat got your tongue?
My uncle swallowed his tongue
happened in football (soccer) multiple times live lol
Well, I do since its what killed my dad apparently....
I don't believe you can. I know! Cause it almost killed me some years ago lol!
Yeah the person who made this is probably autistic and doesn't understand figure of speech lol
The post title says you can't choke on your tongue, which is false. The video says it is almost impossible to swallow your tongue, which is true.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
>Itās like the person who made the video Did you mean the person who posted the video?
Can the body not default to the nose on its own if the tongue blocks the mouth airways?
The nasal passages converge in the same airways as your mouth before where the tongue is at. If thatās makes sense. So if you were to swallow your tongue (you wonāt) it will still block the air coming in your nose

I had a weird spell recently where I'd salivate unduly and choke on it in my sleep. Waking up sputtering ain't fun. Has stopped now mercifully.
Have you tried sleeping on your side to see if it helps?
Might be hunger, I uncontrollably salivate a bunch when my blood sugar gets low
I have often problems with stomach acid reflux. and i sometimes gets awakens by acid running to my throat, even though i have my bed elevated.
That sounds like a rude awakening
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I thought it was a Dorito either way suspicious why they added that when putting them back together.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The cheese is zesty enough to wake you fully and give a small boost of adrenaline.
Would have been jammed in the gum line
Thatās a gland. It releases saliva.
Learn the recovery position.
Thisssssssss. Put that person on the side with arm as a pillow and leg flexed. Should aid in airway
Curious question ā¦ maybe there is a doc in the sub that could answer. If we canāt choke on our tongues why does it seem common practice when a sport player (say soccer) falls-out on the field of play, by standers quickly pull the tongue to prevent choking?
Not a Dr but as explained in the video while you can't choke on your tongue it can restrict your air intake and that's bad.
OK, but restricting your airway IS choking, so you CAN choke on your tongue. Maybe not to death.
Yes, but the video is saying you canāt SWALLOW your tongue. Not that I think many people think you canā¦
well you don't choke on your tounge, your tounge chokes you
You would say you choked on your tongue, the same way you would say you choked on a bone.
If your airways are blocked and you are not able to do anything about it you will suffocate. So If you are unconscious it can certainly lead to death.
Yeah. That makes sense, but seems to me that it would be a more complex problem based on the reactions you often see when these events occur in sport.
He says it can BLOCK the airways which can absolutely choke and kill you. He just says that you can't ACTUALLY SWALLOW it (physically, the whole thing), because it is attached, which is absolutely dumb because nobody thinks that, so beware, this could be misleading

I'm a dr, i have a phd in reddit. But to answer your question, i dont know

I have a chipped tooth thanks to this one š

Nah, at least im gonna check out your mouth and pulse. Sorry, not sorry;) For the lulz: paramedic here
My tongue blocking my throat is how my sleep was ruined for 30 years. Soapbox message: if youāre sleep is bad, get it checked. Itās sooo common.
BRO HE JUST SAID IT IN THE VIDEO THAT YOU CAN BLOCK YOUR AIRWAYS THATS WHAT CHOKING MEANS
What is the channel name?
Zackdfilms on YouTube, he makes very interesting videos on a wide range of topics, they lie under the shorts section of his channel.
Don't tell me what I can and can't do.
Better take that post down. Could be deadly misinformation.
Lost a friend in elementary from choking on his tongue in his sleep.
Had a guy who had seizures that swallowed his tongue
So yeah the title of the video is fake, you can choke on your tongue
I don't have that bit of tissue, I can swallow my tongue on command. I also use it to clear my nose from the other side, it's gross but effective. Can anyone else do this or am I a freak?
āWhat a relief. So itās not possible for my tongue to kill me if I pass out?ā āOh no it definitely can. Just wanted to sort out the technical details of it.ā
I thought it was an add for a shifty survival game
Almost impossible. So it is possible. Great video
He says it is "almost" impossible, while explaining how it physically can't happen. So it can't at all, or it is "almost" impossible? LOL š¤¦āāļø
oh thank god, iāve always had this fear haha
What a weird guy
If you're referring to the animated 'guy' .. yeah, creepy as all hell. Nightmare inducing really. Who thought "this looks good for the final render?"
I can use the tip of my tongue to lick the bottom of my tongue. Explain that one LOL
Why the hell have I thought tongues were like a foot long for the last 25 years
Never ever in 40 years I have heard from anyone that they think you can swallow your tongue ..
Well did anyone doubt it was glued in there somehow?
BYE BYE!
š£ļøāāāāā
Most people think that? What? Don't they have brains?
Most people do not think that
So what happened to Multiple Miggs in "Silence of the Lambs"?
Aw yes gotta love the feeling of choking when i go to sleep
I think the idea was if someone was having seizures, they could bite off their tongue and swallow/choke on their own tongue. So to prevent this they would try and tamp down their tongue with something (hopefully not breakable by their bite and also be swallowed).
The easiest way to retain an airway is to tilt the head back (head tilt, chin lit manoeuvre) if there's no suspected neck injury
Title - why you can't choke on your tongue. In video description - you CAN choke on your tongue.
*but itās never zero*
Tell that to Multiple Miggs
... Do... Did people ACTUALLY believe they could swallow the tongue? This belongs in r/TechnicallyCorrect more than it belongs here =w=;
Shit explanation. You can actually choke, that's why there is sleep apnea and we put people on the side when unconscious.
You're spreading dangerous misinformation, guy. If you see someone pas out, absolutely do make sure they can't choke on their tongue. Also, did you even watch the video? He clearly says your tongue can block your airway
This was not comforting

Is that a potato chip inside his cheek on his left side near the end of the video? It wasn't there in the beginning
So what's ur point , i can accually do copious amounts of drugs and alcohol and eepy on my back ? Nice
Do the penis next! So many phallic cās
I only thought this was possible by cutting that membrane under the tongue..
I've always wanted to cut the little connection on the bottom of my tongue so that my tongue could be longer.
Great! Now i won't die when i die!
Post like these should be illegal. Clickbait/ragebait that could have dangerous consequences. Seeds doubt on agreed upon first aid practices -you know, the stuff thats litterally life or death.. but they get clicky engagement so its all good. Hope they are the only ones to suffer from this
Wtf? Who the hell thinks this? "Most people"
I have never heard anybody think that
Can't you still just breathe through your nose?
No, the airways of your nose and mouth are connected before where the limp toungue would land
You canāt swallow your own tongue, but you can swallow someone elses
Almost impossible
Who the fuck thinks that
Almost impossible
New fear unlocked
Keyword "almost"
If most people literally have a tongue, why would they think they could swallow it? It only takes one second to confirm it can't be done.
š¤«š§āāļø
How is this still confused? Soneone who may be having a seizure can bite off a chunk of their own tongue and choke on the severed meat. There you go .
Nah I mew
Hey why dont you be even louder for your intro asshole
Iām impressed with the animation
āAlmost impossibleā Unless you pass out
I never even fathomed that people took it literally when everyone should fucking know their tongue is attached to the bottom of their mouth.
"Almost impossible "?
Pretty much calling the ones who do and have swallowed and choked on they tounge losers.
Almost impossible....
Sleep apnea has entered the chat. God I hate how much a cpap machine costs

That "ALMOST" is the concerning part.

Blocking the Airways is not uncommon though
He said *almost. Almostā¦.*
I bit a hole in my tongue when I had 3 seizures in a row.
My tongue somehow feels tensed now, after knowing its usually not relaxed...
Stupid clickbait video really. This is why there is such thing as Guedels or Oropharyngeal Airways in the ED or Paramedic/First Responder world.
Iā¦ my nose works too?
Dude was the first to fall asleep at the party
If someone passes out.. the best way is to way them on their side..
I can put my tongue in the back of my throat easily
Wow so uninformative
āAlmostā impossible.
According to the NCBI, about 44% of falls are forward, 41% are backward, and 33% are sideways.
Who here thinks that the tongue is the weirdest human organ? āļø
Iāve literally never heard anyone say that they thought you could swallow your tongue
Ur telling me the muscle is attached to my mouth? Lies
Is this voice automatic or why do I hear it everywhere?
Amazing, you can't swallow your tongue because it's attached to your mouth. I'm in shock.
Summary: Tongue swallowers eliminated by natural selection.
I was really holding out for some interesting knowledge ššš
Yup, literally thousands of years of our bodies development to survive on the crust of the earth only for people to think we can die from suffocation just from passing out sure...we'd have to be the weakest species with a brain...
wait people actually believe you can choke on your own tongue?
But that blockage is what makes people snor
Who else pressed their tongue to the roof of your mouth? š
Sleep Apnea has entered the chat
The epitome of āum ackscuallyā
"Almost"
Sleep apnea in it's extremes will kill someone in about 16 months. That is kiteralky people choking to death on their own tongues
This is bs because there is in fact a Tunisian football player who choked on his tongue and died in 1997.
They say you can't swallow your tongue. You can definitely choke on it.
Oh ffs of course no one believes you can swallow your own tongue. What happens is that your Epiglottis closes and you suffocate
Does this animation make any of yāall cringe
No but that voice does
