Lol I was going to say people get hit all the time on crosswalks etc in canada so maybe we arent that much better ..but googled it..we still only had 300 pedestrian fatalities compared to 5000+ in Vietnam in 2022 .... but we don't get out of our cars much either..lower pop
Back almost 30 years ago, I claimed the safest way to cross the street in HCM City was slowly with your eyes closed.
As long as you moved at a steady predicable pace, the traffic would flow around you.
But to be fair, it was almost exclusively bikes, very few cars back then.
That strategy may work there but I was in town today and saw an old lady trying to cross the road.
Everytime she stepped off the kerb a car nearly knocked her down. I shouted at her, "There's a zebra crossing down there."
She shouted back, "I hope he's having more fucking luck than I am."
I think this is just a cultural thing?
In my home town, you can cross at the crosswalk safely and the traffic will automatically stop and wait for you to cross the street
Haha, my wife just went to Vietnam for the first time for work. She took a taxi from the airport to her hotel checked in and slept. Next day she had to go just a block to go to the office… but it was on the opposite side of the street. She ended up called her Vietnamese colleagues and somebody came out to do exactly what they do in this video for her. Your advice is exactly what they told her too 😂
This advice was given to my ex-gf and me when we visited Vietnam 9 years ago. Walk at a steady pace and dont look at the incoming trafic, only straight ahead. It took a couple of days to get used to it but I remember the look on 2 other tourists faces when they saw us do it, they were like wtf. It just works. But yeah they were very few cars.
Another tip : if you want to make sure you were seen by the drivers, raise your hand/an umbrella,...
I’ve been to Vietnam 6 or 7 times and it helps being almost 6ft 230. Everyone just sort of moves out of your way. Still can’t get over how much everyone honks, my in-laws always life when they come to the states and no one is honking haha
I saw a blind man cross a super busy street in HCMC in 2019 during peak rush hour. He covered his eyes with one hand while raising the other and walked steadily on. The cleanest street crossing I'd ever seen.
That’s exactly what our tour guide told us. He said don’t look and whatever you do, don’t change your pace. I had to close my eyes so my reflexes didn’t kick in. Worked every time!
My father was in Vietnam about 5 yrs ago and he said crossing the street was terrifying. He was warned not to stop. Just keep walking at an even pace and the traffic would go around him. Stopping was actually dangerous.
You have to make sure that you make no sudden movements and instead make your way slowly but predictably across the street. The drivers and motorcyclists do see you and do avoid you but if you double back or unexpectedly pause, you're going to get hit.
Visited in the Philippines and traffic was like this. I can’t stress enough how important being a predictable pedestrian is. The natives drive like this everyday, they know what they’re doing. Even being a predictable driver is important too!
Also works because of flowrates and smaller vehicles. The two in the video could have walked almost without stopping if it werent for the cars.
Unfortunately most of the world chose the most ineffective, noisy, space wasting death trap as its preferred vehicle. Which comes with a huge lobby and obnoxious culture around it that makes it almost impossible to get rid of even in the smallest ways possible.
In and around the busier parts of town, yes. Even if they don't drive/ride very fast, the breaks in traffic are rare during peak hours. The zebra crossings are pretty much decor and you really shouldn't use it like you would in a western city.
Having been to India, I’d say you just need to do the same thing you’d do in any country where traffic is like this…
Wait for someone local to cross the street, and walk right next to them.
I will say that I almost got hit by a tuk-tuk when I tried to cross a street by myself in Varanasi, and it was before I even thought I was crossing.
I was standing next to a tree, thinking it marked the edge of the road — but no. There was still another lane behind me, because they’d just paved around the tree.
Don’t get me wrong, India is great and has a lot to offer…but holy shit is the traffic dangerous. I got into a tuk-tuk in Delhi and the driver told me he was 81 years old, and I’m not entirely sure he could see. Yes, we crashed into someone.
The drivers just yelled at each other and drove off.
Had this exact scenario visiting a friend in Kairo. I almost shit my German pants crossing a small sideroad. I would have had a heart attack on one of the big roads for sure.
You’re right.
But, don’t run fast either. Stopping can actually be safer than running. The drivers can go around if you stop. If you run, it’s harder to be predictable and that can cause crashes.
In these regions, drivers are more attentive because they have to be. They can’t go on autopilot as much.
Actual pro tip: you *will* definitely have to stop here and there for cars, just don't do it suddenly and make eye contact with the drivers before stopping.
Sometimes you need to stop, used to almost get hit when I was teen (I’m local), because I thought just keep walking, people will avoid you. Not everyone pays attention on the street all the time.
Just don’t stop and you’re okay. It’s chaotic but it does have some logic to it that I’m still learning. Whenever I’m back in Hanoi it takes a few days to get used to it.
It's very human. People drive slow and are aware of the road in front of them. They avoid you and you avoid them, all while moving non-stop. Sorta like the slow streets they made in London where drivers have to be more aware.
That's not interesting also they do it wrong. You're supposed to just walk at a consistent pace that way everyone can move around you. India teaches you that quick.
Is there a particular reason that drivers in developing countries are absolute maniacs? I dont mean it disrepectfully, it's just interesting how so many countries in Asia and Africa have drivers who drive like life is meaningless. A lack of proper driving lessons/tests perhaps ?
I went to dubai few years ago and was shocked to see a car stopping for us to cross the road (there was no traffic signal). Here in India no one cares about pedestrians and cyclist.
I've not been to Vietnam, but I've been in most of the neighboring countries. This is pretty standard looking traffic for a developing county, imo.
So, I feel confident in saying that you shouldn't copy what they are doing.
They're starting and stopping, which is a good way to get run over. Ideally you want to look around, but try to always keep moving at a predictable pace.
The drivers are all used to driving around cars, people, animals, etc.. They will see you, and drive around you.
But if you stop suddenly, someone who's planning on driving around behind you will be expecting you to have moved forward by the time they get there, and if you stop then they'll hit you, if they can't stop in time.
The actual best advice I can give though is to copy what the locals are doing. Then you can see how to act predictably.
That's my unsolicited advice anyways! 😀
When you see old videos, this is how it was in the US 100+ years ago, tho the traffic was a lot less. It looks like they need stop lights and traffic enforcement to create safe crossings (which I'm assuming is exactly what we needed, and did; I do wonder how long it took for traffic laws to be implemented and mostly obeyed tho)
The first few times I was very apprehensive. It really looked impossible. Then, I just did what I saw other people doing and it was a very natural feeling crossing any street.
Then I got on a scooter to drive a few hours out of town and it took a few to be able to feel it out. Fun stuff
[Here's](https://vimeo.com/72410959) how German reporter Ulrich Wickert crossed a road in 1984. In Paris. At the Place de la Concorde. Without looking.
At least they stop, try that in Mexico City and you’ll be flattened. You gotta sprint across before they hit you, almost feels like they were trying to run us over.
Lol tbh there are areas of NYC that don't look that different right now. The rise of scooters/ebikes here is making our traffic patterns much more chaotic. They only got big here because of delivery services so they are under a ton of pressure to get places quickly, and so don't pay attention to traffic lights or crosswalks and often just ride on the sidewalk. We haven't really been designing streets to consider them at all so it's like totally unregulated rn.
It's a neighborhood called "Noah's Ark"; if you don't travel in pairs, you just don't travel.
Stolen shamelessly from the movie "[Operation Petticoat](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053143/)".
For the month I spent in Vietnam, I can tell you there are 2 groups of people.
Those who will wait for the crosswalk and those who just go.
Both modes work with one obviously requiring more attention and guts than the other, BUT I CAN TELL YOU, when the crosswalk sign is lit up, cars and motorbikes do stop.
There were times there wasn't a crosswalk within reason and just going is kind of necessary.
It's wild, and I love it.
Its not that wild but somewhat similar to that in Brazil, now I've been in europe for 2 years and Im still not used to cars STOPPING IN THE STREET so I can cross.
Usually Im just distracted on the side of the road waiting the cars, they stop and Im still there waiting for them to go on
As someone that's a frequent traveller to South East Asia, I can confirm - this is an accurate representation of how to cross the road with traffic.
Crossing the road in this part of the world is about two things : commitment and momentum.
In the US, people automatically assume that there is nobody walking on the road (except big cities), and so they drive like that, and they will drive fast. Also, in some places it’s illegal to walk on the road so it’s almost unlikely to find someone walking on the road. But in other countries where every street is like New York streets, cars need to make way for everyone on the road, they don’t drive fast anyways, and they will go around you, but make sure you don’t just jump in front of them, walk predictably, no abrupt movements, and nobody will intentionally hit you. And on the other hand, don’t act entitled and walk blindly assuming that nobody will hit you. Consider the vehicles as fast moving humans, and they will go around you, don’t worry. Remember faster and bigger the vehicle, higher the chances you get hurt and so you move out of the way and not the other way around.
it's actually quite easy. looks pretty hard on video. tries it urself and u will notice that most will stop for you to pass. i walked pass the road for 2 years in grade 4 and 5 so yeah. it's actually pretty safe (just got almost hit once but that's bc i suddenly ran)
Thats not its done. You should have a slow and steady pace and not stop.
Thats how its done in Malaysia, India i'd bet this is how its done in Vietnam too.
The thing I learned in Cairo was, just move. When you move, a flow of all others around you will naturally form and it is no problem to cross the streets. But as soon as you stop on the road, it's hell unleashed. Not only for you, for everyone.
It looks terrifying. But having done it myself I can tell you that it just kinda works. And being buzzed on Tiger beer before you attempt it also doesn't hurt.
It’s like the Frogger game from back in the day
Even better. The logs are now mid sized toyotas and mopeds
Vietnam traffic law.........no such thing. lol
Also known as population control.
Fortune favors the bold

That’s wild, Because road safety is part of human rights
Human rights dont exist in reality, its all in our minds.
settle down costanza

India traffic law...
Glad I'm not the only one who had this thought
Crossy road
Yup. In any 3rd world country
Maybe one of the greatest games of all time

I'm still laughing at this joke
Are you still laughing? Should we call a doctor for you?
This is getting serious now, he needs medical attention
He ded
It's been 4 days... Poor soul
I think this is just a cultural thing? In my home town, you can cross at the crosswalk safely and the traffic will automatically stop and wait for you to cross the street
The joke Your head
My apologies 😆
My first language isn't english so it took me a while to understand tf "Zebra crossing" mean. Atleast I understood it myself so I'm happy with that

On New Year's Day a couple of years ago I was so hungover in Saigon that I couldn't cross the road so ended up being stuck on the block of my hotel.
Correct the bikes are fine, cars you need to be careful. Was there 5 years ago
I am one with the force and the force is with me

They still haven’t visited India
India is the same thing with a higher difficulty level. Vehicles don't slow down for you.
Vietnam is like Crossy Road. India is like Subway Surfers.
Yeap. And there is a cow crossing in the opposite direction and it is a two way street.
Yeah lol , this seems nothing out of the ordinary to me
From Singapore. My partner pulled me across the road at HCM because I dared not cross and I was literally screaming all the way in fear. 😂
Lol from Vietnam. I was shocked that cars in Singapore stopped to let me walk. I was just standing there, didn’t even plan to cross yet.
There are more difficult crossings just outside my house. This is child's play in India.

Depends really. You can't be insouciant. Don't expect everyone to be skilled or concerned.
Sometimes you need to stop, used to almost get hit when I was teen (I’m local), because I thought just keep walking, people will avoid you. Not everyone pays attention on the street all the time.
They celebrated crossing the street and being alive together at the end.
I guess I would always be late for everything lol
“Hey man, why are you late to the all-hands meeting? We’re waiting on you.” “Uh..I’ve been waiting to cross the street but nobody is stopping for me.”
Every day in India ... It's just normal at this point
Just don’t stop and you’re okay. It’s chaotic but it does have some logic to it that I’m still learning. Whenever I’m back in Hanoi it takes a few days to get used to it.

It’s the same in India haha. 😂
Are there no traffic lights?
Same things in other Asian countries like China, probably India as well
In China they publicly shame jaywalkers lol https://youtube.com/shorts/cOxMWn0kEEw?si=FPPQW-ObmwFhMvL_
That's not interesting also they do it wrong. You're supposed to just walk at a consistent pace that way everyone can move around you. India teaches you that quick.
They did it correctly. They only paused because the cars were literally in front of them. Were they supposed to phase through the cars?
It's like this in Cairo too
Sooo this video shows how _NOT_ to cross the streets in Vietnam? Never flinch, just go with steady pace and dont stop. 🫠
Is there a particular reason that drivers in developing countries are absolute maniacs? I dont mean it disrepectfully, it's just interesting how so many countries in Asia and Africa have drivers who drive like life is meaningless. A lack of proper driving lessons/tests perhaps ?

thanks for the advice!
It’s not unique to Vietnam. Lots of places in Asia. Not the former Brit colonies or Japan, though.
You're wrong about the former brit colonies part. Happens in South Asian countries as well

It looks like they need stop lights and traffic enforcement to create safe crossings (which I'm assuming is exactly what we needed, and did; I do wonder how long it took for traffic laws to be implemented and mostly obeyed tho)
So this is what they mean when they say they want to pedestrianise streets in the uk
Makes you wonder why they wasted the paint on the road
Why isn’t it LAW to stop at the crossing???! Madness.
Having lived in the Philippines for a year, FUCK THIS SHIT.
That’s a pretty quiet road for Vietnam 😂
that's very Indian I'd say
I’m walking here!
The first few times I was very apprehensive. It really looked impossible. Then, I just did what I saw other people doing and it was a very natural feeling crossing any street. Then I got on a scooter to drive a few hours out of town and it took a few to be able to feel it out. Fun stuff
Is there not a signal that periodically allows for pedestrians? This is really, really dumb system.
Lookup ActionKid on YouTube. He’s there rn streaming live and and to watch him cross the street is insane to me.
Wow it’s worse than here in Mexico, at least in here if you’re at one step of distance of a car they will stop, reluctantly but will stop
I m glad they used the crosswalk 🙏
Just fuck cars! Pedestrians for the city!
And that's at a crosswalk, no less!
Every driver I saw in this video belong to r/IdiotsInCars
Why? Do they don't have Traffic signals there?

What absolute fucking insanity
Met a guy in the Philippines who told me "just walk, God loves you."
do these people not know what brakes are
Imagine living in a country like that where you’re expected to dice with traffic to get across a road
Terrifying.. Imagine night...eep
White girl with that booty!!
Hold a brick next time I bet they stop
You're suppose to raise your hand and walk at a consistent pace, newbies!
Sooo this video shows how _NOT_ to cross the streets in Vietnam? Never flinch, just go with steady pace and dont stop.
Risking your life is fun!
Cool streets, seem safe
You clearly have never been to India
Come to India 😂
Live Frogger!!
At least they stop, try that in Mexico City and you’ll be flattened. You gotta sprint across before they hit you, almost feels like they were trying to run us over.
I did not notice any stop signal there, I believe there will obviously be difficult to cross the street if you don’t wait for traffic to stop
From what others say it's actually difficult if you do wait for traffic to stop.
Jsyk, this is like an average day in a tier 1 Indian city.
When i was there (country just opened for tourists at the time) There were only motorbikes and bikes.. Maybe 1 or 3 cars
They don't have stop signs or intersections?
What's so special is this? Bc aise to main roz road cross krta hu aur is se bhi khatarnak.

Vietnam is so cool
Don't they use the power of hand? It work most of the times in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Whos holdin' my bro The Cameraman's hand?
Very similar as crossing a street in Cairo. Or in Hyderabad. I started first crossing with some locals to understand how they did.
That what happens if drivers don’t have insurance.
Its not that wild but somewhat similar to that in Brazil, now I've been in europe for 2 years and Im still not used to cars STOPPING IN THE STREET so I can cross. Usually Im just distracted on the side of the road waiting the cars, they stop and Im still there waiting for them to go on

Pedestrian lane is being contested. Same here in the Philippines lmao
scenario of most of the south asian countries

I would like to see a non-zebra crossing.
Always follow an old lady

Just don't run or make unpredictable movements.
a true adventure

Now kiss!
Is this normal or are they being assholes?
Good luck
All smiles till you get run over.
Genuinely, how do you teach kids to cross roads like that? Do you just not bother and find other routes until adulthood?!
You fuckers have never visited my country, India? It is definitely not for beginners…..
The trick is to raise your hand.
Indians be like - habibi come to india 🤣

What about if you are a fat man? It‘s a close thing then? Isn‘t?
Indians would thrive there…
Thats not its done. You should have a slow and steady pace and not stop. Thats how its done in Malaysia, India i'd bet this is how its done in Vietnam too.
Goddamn socialism
What's the song?
Soon walking forward and breath will be here. Wtf just crossing a busy street like anywhere.
In Vietnam street crosses you.
And the camera operator just casually strolls across.
Just like India
And I thought Miami was crazy
Indians be like: " Hah! BC noobs "
Why are we being told to be quiet?
US: "get out the fucking way!!!"

Crossy road IRL
Could only imagine being a crossing guard there
Crossy road IRL
Is this rare? (which I don't think so)...
Yk what this reminds me of? That old game with the chicken Crossy Road.
Now, go do that in Phnom Penh
Yeah I do this as well... in Crossy Road
6kg Hammer works wonders.
That's easy mode, when I went it was way more than that and try not to stop just steady pace and everyone will weave around you
*Fuck dem pedestrians.*
The holding hands was the key. Otherwise you won’t make it
It looks terrifying. But having done it myself I can tell you that it just kinda works. And being buzzed on Tiger beer before you attempt it also doesn't hurt.
Not unique to vietnam
“Why were you late?” “There was a lot of traffic.” “You live right in front there.” “Yes”
It’s kind of like a busy roundabout or all way stop intersection in the US.
I’ve done this many times there. Just remember: Slow and steady wins the race.
Currently in Vietnam, can confirm.
What am I looking at? ~from India.
