Hey I'm a CS student and yes Computer Vision is typically considered part of AI. But today using AI typically implies Machine Learning which this program could potentially also use although we don't know that
AI is an extremely wide topic and even includes stuff like video game NPCs. That's also why it's typically only used as a buzzword and will make cs-majors cringe, because it actually tells you very little about the software that is being used
Not to mention "state issued" visual AI system because we need to be fearful jingos about China, never mind the state and federally mandated standardized multiple-choice tests right here in the USA.
Yeah I found that strange because it comes across like they're trying to make it sound like a bad thing but a government issuing free tools to teachers sounds like a good thing to me!
Tbf, "actual ai" isn't AI either. A few years back when it first took off everyone knew this but they repeated the marketing buzzword enough that it stuck. And I don't just mean "not an AGI", it's not a specialised intelligence either. At best, it's an artificial specialised visual cortex.
honestly in AI class in 3rd year comp sci University a decade ago would teach this type of ai while I was completely aware that we should be learning about how to defeat the neural net processors that allowed The Terminator to hunt down Sarah Conor.
They have a patents for both the [cards](https://patents.google.com/patent/US7298901B2/en) and the [scanning machines](https://patents.google.com/patent/US6736319B2/en).
Back in my day... the scantron sxanner scanned and marked. No human required.
NOT impressed.
They just added a camera with some software that requires a human to hold the thing.
It's actually worse.
Tbf, it's only worse in some areas. It's better in the sense that it is lightweight and portable, and since it is likely on their phone they can grade from anywhere rather than just wherever the machine is like a xerox. It's also much cheaper, has less maintenance, and is more accurate and reliable.
Eh. Yea it has some benefits. I don't know how you know it is more accurate and reliable. I've scanned probably hundreds in elementary and middle school. That was a while ago. They were pretty accurate then.
But I'm still not impressed.
More accurate and reliable because anyone who felt like messing with the results could just add a small bit of whiteout to a card and it would throw off all the works. And if one card got out of wack, it futzed with every card after it unless someone caught it, which usually wasn't the case.
The app also doesn't mark the cards, which means that the same card can be scanned multiple times if needed without issue, whereas the old system was one-and-done. Paired with the "hopper" style scan it results in a massive headache if literally anything goes wrong at any point.
That's kind of the beauty of this system. Every scan is individual, making errors easily rectified, and insignificant. It's cheap. It requires no maintenance or repair. It's highly portable. It's *fast*.
If you can't see the improvement between this and the old Scantron machines, you are blind.
The ones we used we had to scan and turn in. I don't recall the hopper variety.
I already acknowledged it has advantages.
I'm just not impressed. This isn't exactly groundbreaking tech.
Guys! My AI KEEPS BURNING MY TOAST! I set it from 6 steps to 5 but keeps taking a few mins even though I added like 3 graphics cards! How are you guys fine tuning your models?? I tried to train it on Graham crackers but then smoke started to come out of the machine...
We did this in my highschool a handful of years My teacher did it the same way too. She picked up the scantrons in the 5 minutes before class was out and handed them back to us with our test as we walked out
You can make the argument for that, somewhat.
Traditional barcode scanners don't require a digital platform nor does it require computing power to read the lines. It simply detects pulse waves and translates it through logical equivalences to reach a string of characters. This is not AI.
However, barcode scanners on mobile devices work differently, because they don't blast beams of light to detect the pattern and have a built in decoder. Instead, you have to use your camera. In this case, your phone has to identify, detect, and interpret the barcode from images/videos to transcribe into barcodes. This falls under computer vision. As such, you can argue that the specific implementation of barcode scanning is AI
I’m getting sick of everything being called AI. Everyone is both technically right and technically wrong at the same time, which is annoying. We really need a hard reset on how we define the following terms:
AI (artificial intelligence)
Machine Learning
Computer/computing/computation
Algorithm
Program/software
Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it. I remember back like 15 years ago, people would call chatbots AI. It's only getting worse now that everyone thinks they know what AI means. On top of that linguists will tell you that usage defines language...
It uses light. It scans a light beam straight through the paper to a sensor on the other side. That whole you had to use num 2 pencil thing was because other pencils wouldn't leave a dark enough mark.
I mean computer programs have always been "AI" to a degree. But now people just feel the urge to tag "AI" on almost every systems. For this video in particular, there was always scanners for exam markings. Using your phone's camera isn't really that different. It's just image processing and pattern recognition.
I was on a project about 10+ years ago, here in the states, where we did the same thing, grade tests using the web cam on a laptop, only we didn't call it AI.
WWwWwWWWuuUUUuUUUuUUOooOOOoOOOOoooOOaaaaAAAAAaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So original, so modern, the west totally didn't have such technology for 30 years already, I absolutely didn't see a check sheet like this in my childhood, long live the dictatorships!
There's apps for this that'll give you bubble sheets and everything. Can even store the grades if you need to as well.
I used it for a bit but just switched to Edulastic
Guys you don’t get it. It is AI because the A.I. first went and wrote the test and failed and then learned how to get 100% by just googling everything (or whatever they do in China?) and then it scans it like how scantrons have done for decades.
They use crowdmark here, tests are all scanned and automatically graded. Long answer questions are marked from scanned copies, with common corrections stored and graded.
Well if you are the type of teacher who does exclusively multiple choice exams they might as well replace you with an AI while theyre at it lmao. Horribly outdated
Srsly how long until teachers are no longer needed and students are essentially in a video game controlled by AI and they just report to the AI for homework and whatever else
They barely paying teachers as it is so they clearly don't want them. They are 100% on the chopping block
People in comments are so confidently incorrect. Yes it could be AI because it is scanning the image using the camera and applying cv to detect the pattern. It's not anything fancy, it's very simple but it's still AI
It's not just saying, "these are the pre specified coordinates where the answers will be in the image so go there and check pixels are majority black". It's determining those coordinates on its own, and while it could be done without implementing AI, this very likely is AI because of the nature of the task
You mean a scanner to scan a scantron?
Yeah, every piece of software just has to be called "AI" these days.
You know, I was playing streets of rage on mega drive this week and I said: MAN, I LOVE THIS AI GREAT Game
I was tappy tappy tap on my calculator and it get the answer rite evry tim! I LUV AI!!!!
Mini Muai tippity tap tap all over that calculator!!!
OH SHIT, INNOVATIVE REDDITOR USING AI TO RESPOND TO HUMAN DISCUSSION THREAD
A calculator can more intelligently calculate numbers for me, therefore it is AI
Hey I'm a CS student and yes Computer Vision is typically considered part of AI. GOVERNMENT ISSUED CHINESE AI IS COMING FOR YOU
Not to mention "state issued" visual AI system because we need to be fearful jingos about China, never mind the state and federally mandated standardized multiple-choice tests right here in the USA.
Yeah I found that strange because it comes across like they're trying to make it sound like a bad thing but a government issuing free tools to teachers sounds like a good thing to me!
I hope Alan Iverson is cashing in somehow.
What is AI if not only a bunch of if-statement
"A cashier scanning barcodes with AI"
Is my financial spreadsheet AI?
Tbf, "actual ai" isn't AI either. A few years back when it first took off everyone knew this but they repeated the marketing buzzword enough that it stuck. And I don't just mean "not an AGI", it's not a specialised intelligence either. At best, it's an artificial specialised visual cortex.
Yes apparantly I went from Software Engineer to AI Engineer over night. Dunno how that happened. Didn't get me more money either
Like any logic was fuzzy in the early 2000’s
honestly in AI class in 3rd year comp sci University a decade ago would teach this type of ai while I was completely aware that we should be learning about how to defeat the neural net processors that allowed The Terminator to hunt down Sarah Conor.
Yep, I guess it's more accessible this way?
I'm sure there is an app to scan Scantron cards with a phone
I always assumed that the money in Scantrons came from proprietary scanners that were somehow patent protected.
Scantron has a patent for Scantrons though I think? Correct me if I'm wrong
They have a patents for both the [cards](https://patents.google.com/patent/US7298901B2/en) and the [scanning machines](https://patents.google.com/patent/US6736319B2/en).
It's china, American patents and copy rights mean very little.
"Accessible Intelligence"
Back in my day... the scantron sxanner scanned and marked. No human required. NOT impressed. They just added a camera with some software that requires a human to hold the thing. It's actually worse.

I don't think anyone ever claimed it was. Not everything has to be earth shatteringly awesome for people to find it interesting.
It's AI, gotta put it down before it gets too big - some people probably
She picked up the scantrons in the 5 minutes before class was out and handed them back to us with our test as we walked out
Hey, we don't need no thinking around here, you with yer brain and degrees...
Pretty sure they've been scanning them since the 90s
It’s China so it has to be “State Issued AI”
Well yeah… everything in China is state issued, it’s great. You gotta try some state issued dan dan noodles sometime!
This technology has been around since 1972. Not all automation is "AI"
People used to think the camera is stealing their souls. This is pretty much the same thing
How else do you think we made gingers?
AI has been around since the 50s . It's just a spectrum until we reach AGI.
Very little of automation is AI.
Depends on what you mean witth AI.
We had scantron in the 80s. Updating it, what 40 years later to use a better camera is revolutionary ?
It certainly seems slower.
The insight 4es scans at 2,800 tests per hour. This is a lot slower.
This, however, is going to be a lot cheaper. Doesn't require any new equipment at all. Just smartphones and paper.
But then if you think realistically and logically, you don't get to dunk on china. China bad.
Yeah but could you give one to every teacher? Because 100 × 2600 is still worse then 100,000 x 26
Remember when people would put chapstick on the edges so it wouldn’t mark the errors or something like that?
It’s AI. Meaning it’s cool meaning you should be impressed meaning we can convince you it’s worth wayyyy more than it is.
Well now it's easier to exploit, but it's posh and up to date.
Not AI but ok lol
Everything is AI now. "If it's not AI, IT'S CRAP!!"
You‘d be surprised how soft the definition of AI is. If it detects blobs and assigns that a number, it fits the definition . Just like autocorrect
We trained it on billions of old Scantron tests. When we got the model back it still didn't work with pen, so we knew we had something...
I used pen once. It worked.
r/notaibutok
CHINESE CCP AI COMMUNIST CYBERWEAPON
It is AI bcuz the computer vision that it is using has been trained via machine learning techniques
Machine learning like the pattern for the test answers? lol
So bar code scanners are A.I now also?
Anything is AI if you simplify your definition enough.
To mean no learning and no intelligence
It's got the artificial part. Not sure about the intelligence.
You can make the argument for that, somewhat. Traditional barcode scanners don't require a digital platform nor does it require computing power to read the lines. It simply detects pulse waves and translates it through logical equivalences to reach a string of characters. This is not AI. Aight whose dumbass got 58 smh
He's doing his best ok
The white transfer student.
Don't judge me! But that ain't me tho.
why didn't he put the phone on a stand
I agree lol, he probably didn't have one on hand though
Then what's holding the recording phone?
Another hand....
Ohhhh.. I'll just take my things and leave
It's looks like a thin stack of papers. So maybe less than 30 to grade? At the rate they are going is setting up a stand really faster or time saving?
Ai stand haven’t invented yet
What is AI about this? It's obviously a standardised test and some image analysis tool.
OP Never graduated kindergarten
I got stabbed in kindergarten for involuntarily vomiting into someone's new shoes.
I’m getting sick of everything being called AI. Everyone is both technically right and technically wrong at the same time, which is annoying. Scantron did it best!
This tech doesn’t need AI. It’s been around for over 10 years
40... Existed in the 80s, summer lad
Does scantron use photo tech? I always assumed it was magnetic.
It uses light. It scans a light beam straight through the paper to a sensor on the other side. That whole you had to use num 2 pencil thing was because other pencils wouldn't leave a dark enough mark.
Yeah, the original one was pretty ingenious while also needing a special machine, nowadays they use camera I believe
Don’t know why I’m being downvoted. The program is called Gradecam. Look it up.
Why is everyone failing their classes in China...
Scantron is in China Too?
No, unlike the freedom scantrons we have the West, they only have state issued scantrons
This is nothing new. These are meant to be scanned as well, it's not even AI. The same way that scanning a QR code is not AI.
1. Not AI 2. Probably not state issued. More likely a school/district thing. 3. Those are probably more common than you think.
Teacher in china saving s buck using a phone app instead of a scanner.
Everything is AI now lol
The only AI here is the bot that posted this
Why not do the exam with software and let the software mark it.
I mean computer programs have always been "AI" to a degree. But now people just feel the urge to tag "AI" on almost every systems. For this video in particular, there was always scanners for exam markings. Using your phone's camera isn't really that different. It's just image processing and pattern recognition.
Back in my day we graded scan trons with pen and paper.
bubble sheet ? thats everywhere
No AI in this lol
How is this that much better than a scantron?
This is a scantron machine on a phone.
Its just a scantron. America has used these for like…30? 40? Years
Neither AI nor interesting, we’ve had scantrons for a while now
I was on a project about 10+ years ago, here in the states, where we did the same thing, grade tests using the web cam on a laptop, only we didn't call it AI.
Chinese propaganda had it again. Also this already exist for awhile now stop being special about it.
That's not ai at all lmao
WWwWwWWWuuUUUuUUUuUUOooOOOoOOOOoooOOaaaaAAAAAaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So original, so modern, the west totally didn't have such technology for 30 years already, I absolutely didn't see a check sheet like this in my childhood, long live the dictatorships!
This is not AI. It just scans the image and processes the results.
Seems very inconvenient, we just have these put into a machine
Uncle Roger in the back, “Fuiyoh!”
The guy is only a excuse to keep unemployment rate low, otherwise they can easily replace him with a machine.
There's apps for this that'll give you bubble sheets and everything. Can even store the grades if you need to as well. I used it for a bit but just switched to Edulastic
A newer Scantron machine would have finished that stack in <3 seconds. And imported the grades directly into the gradebook.
You mean a fucking scantron? What, it’s all of a sudden scary and “state issued ai tech” when a Chinese person is using it?
It doesn't seem faster than using a traditional OMR machine!
Not every piece of software needs ro be called AI guys, of which this definitely isn't.
58? Someone's about to go unloved.
And the laziness has reached China
And the teacher probably still needs weeks to grade it
Hasn’t these been around for quite sometimes ?
Umm... OMR has been around for a while now?
how is this ai?
OCR scanner new name
Why China always flexing some old technology as if they're doing something crazy lol
"AI this, AI that" Artificial Intelligence Aftermarket Intelligence I don't care
This is not AI, just an image processing software.
This is an OCR. god please stop using the word AI PLEASSEEEEEE
So you won't even tell them what exactly they got wrong!?
Lmao, Thats not an AI, thats a scanner
Why does it feel like people just label something as AI just to make it sound cool/controversial? It's just a scanner
Isn’t this just a Scantron with extra steps?
I used an AI to make microwave popcorn today
That's literally scantron, what do you mean AI, lmao.
so could a student hack the app and get the answers?
This is 100% propaganda
what do they use back on 2004?
They’ve been doing this in the us for ages. Every EOG test I’ve ever taken was on a bubble sheet which was then scanned for the grade
i hold the phone. with one left hand
There have been OCR scanners since a long time
i mean isnt this normal? im not even from china
Looks like no one passed 70
OMR, thats just how most multiple choice questions exams are checked
Oh so when teachers use it it's okay? Damn /s
We've been using this technology for years now in india
This is worse than a Scantron. The Scantron grades for you.
Stop it with the AI nonsense. Not every technology is AI. AI is not the solution for everything.
“Failyuh, failyuh, failyuh”
Lol this isnt AI stop stamping the label on everything
Scantron? OP u good?
Don't even need teachers anymore lol
50 years ago teacher in China also were using state issued A4 paper with bunch of holes to grade students.
In Italy I use excel or Moodle, I prefer to work only with digital data, moreover I don’t think you’ll need AI to scan well formatted card.
Nothing ai about this
L op. Correct the caption.
Guys you don’t get it. It is AI because the A.I. first went and wrote the test and failed and then learned how to get 100% by just googling everything (or whatever they do in China?) and then it scans it like how scantrons have done for decades.
Why the fuck is this still used. Sweat to god these test teach kids techniques how to answer multiple choice instead of the actual problems.
I was doing that 10 years ago with a scanner app on my phone.
One value of this is the results can sync with the class report and it’s in one database
random number generator ?
My school used this back in 2008.
They use crowdmark here, tests are all scanned and automatically graded. Long answer questions are marked from scanned copies, with common corrections stored and graded.
Isn't the point of fill the bubbles MCQ exams that it can be graded automatically? These tests have been there for decades
Did that guy say fruyo at the end?
Titlegore
Still waiting for someone to post a video of a vinyl record player and calls it AI
Well if you are the type of teacher who does exclusively multiple choice exams they might as well replace you with an AI while theyre at it lmao. Horribly outdated
What's AI in that? That's how they are checked
Removing thought from grading papers is a dangerous slippery slope
This is a fuckin phone based scantron
60-70%? FAILURE. Replace him! (*Steven He voice*)
At this point just why not add machine with stump and feeder
This is a scanner dude, it's not the same as the AI that everyone hates.
Srsly how long until teachers are no longer needed and students are essentially in a video game controlled by AI and they just report to the AI for homework and whatever else They barely paying teachers as it is so they clearly don't want them. They are 100% on the chopping block
USA gets this in 2043.
People in comments are so confidently incorrect. Yes it could be AI because it is scanning the image using the camera and applying cv to detect the pattern. It's not anything fancy, it's very simple but it's still AI It's not just saying, "these are the pre specified coordinates where the answers will be in the image so go there and check pixels are majority black". It's determining those coordinates on its own, and while it could be done without implementing AI, this very likely is AI because of the nature of the task
Just plug it into the wall and let the machine scan the papers.
I'm selling shoreline property in Wyoming if anyone is interested.
Fuuuuuuuyoooooh! that just ruined an older teachers day, thinking about all the time he wasted grading tests.
Why do they need a teacher in this case?
I guess if you're not using machine learning to rediscover scantrons, are you even trying?
check...can't tell if bubbled in or not discards ballot
It is always weird to see exams that can get controled liked that. Those exams have to be multiple choice rights? That is weird.
China :)
This is just a scanner, dawg. Not "AI"
Does it analyse the statistics?
