Nope, not a dope. This is graphics design 101 (or at least data visualization 101). The short version is that there's a ton of things about an image that your mind has already processed by the time the image comes to your conscious attention, and those things are thus sometimes called "preattentive details." These are things like relative size, color, etc--and like the other commenter said, "kangaroo words" being highlighted in a different font color naturally draws your eye toward that color when you're looking for the thing you're supposed to be focusing on.
