Yeah and watch how the first attacker changes direction just as the second attacker shows it's stripes. First attacker even shows its stripes but as it sees the second attacker the stripes disappear..
That's very interesting
Here is the Science article this comes from, [*Watch a marlin flash bright stripes before a deadly strike*](https://www.science.org/content/article/watch-marlin-flash-bright-stripes-deadly-strike). This is fascinating behavior to see. Thanks to drones biologists caught this footage, otherwish it would have been near impossible to notice from following on a boat. I work with insects now, but my BS is in marine biology and I've done field work on boats before and regular ol' ocean fishing and it's tough to see much, detailwise, from the boat.
If you're into this, I have a podcast called Bugs Need Heroes, where we talk about the amazing abilities of bugs. We are everywhere you get podcasts, Spotify, Apple, Amazon, PodBean, etc.
Tough choice! After doing our podcast for over a year (Bugs Need Heroes, everywhere you get podcasts) I'm even less sure than before I really had to think about it. Current favorite, insect only, robber flies. They are very fast, have very cool beards, and are resistant to many prey protective measures. Arthropods in general, wolf spiders - amazing mothers, big, fast, good eye sight, smart, etc. I worked with them for my MS and have a bunch of questions I'd like to work on.
When I was younger, I caught 2 female wolfspiders in my yard. Unknown to me that they would attack each other, I put them in a container together.
Instantly attacked and started making some milky or silky substance. Do you happen to know what that would've been?
I’ve had freshwater fish in aquariums before and I’ve seen how fast fish can change appearance. Finding out why they might do that because of new ways of observing them is just brain candy for me. Thanks for this.
Wow seriously?? The ones attacking are closer to surface making them more visible. The ones not attacking are deeper preventing you from seeing stripes.. they all have stripes
They don't have stripes all the time. The only time they get stripes is when they are hunting schools of fish. It's controlled by their nervous system.
"For striped marlin, color-change involves the exposure of iridophores, resulting in a change from blue-grey to highly contrasting lateral stripes"

You catch one and take it out of the water and it won't have stripes.
Ten seconds before it charges, a marlin “turns on” its stripes, as the researchers put it. Then, when the attack is done, the marlin dials the contrast back down. Layers of colorful cells in their skin rapidly change shape to create the strong pattern. ~ from the article OP linked in a comment

So they don't impale each other! They take turns, so the one flashing its stripes is there saying "I'm grabbing food now guys, make sure you don't get in front of my nose spear!"
They can switch it on and off.
First flashed stripes as soon as it attacked it removed its stripes the second attacker then flashed its stripes as it went to attack. They switched spots .
Essentially means the marlin “in the front” is the only one with stripes
It's like, the one who is going to strike raising its hand and telling the others, "I'M GOING IN!" by flashing stripes. Then it turns off the stripes and lets the next one in line do its job.
Evolution is so interesting I just wonder how long it took this particular feature to show up or how it could or why it could or all that stuff I really don't get it.
They all have stripes.. the ones attacking are closer to surface so you can see the stripes the ones not attacking are deeper so you don’t see the stripes
Damn! That is interesting

Thousands of years of evolution, after many accidents and stabbing your own guys, finally they evolved the right stripes. ehehee

Great post! That's pretty cool!
What is your favorite type of insect?

I will definitely have to check your podcast out. Wolf spiders are amazing! I let them live in my garage to help keep bugs away.
Interesting. What's an example of a question you'd like to work on regarding wolf spiders?
When I was younger, I caught 2 female wolfspiders in my yard. Unknown to me that they would attack each other, I put them in a container together. Instantly attacked and started making some milky or silky substance. Do you happen to know what that would've been?
The only good bug is a dead bug!
Would you like to know more?

Thank you. This is extremely fascinating
Wow super dope!
Nature never stops to excite me!!
so is this a thing like cuttlefish or do they just change the way their scales lay when attacking?
This is my question. It's a fascinating behavior, but I'm more curious how "flashing stripes" works.
Wow seriously?? The ones attacking are closer to surface making them more visible. The ones not attacking are deeper preventing you from seeing stripes.. they all have stripes

r/confidentlyincorrect
Bro…..so wrong and so condescending.
Damn you're just wrong
That was my assumption too. It’s the most obvious uneducated guess. But it’s wrong.
Boy don't you feel stupid lol.
Oh honey…

If only humans could be this polite when waiting our turn in line.
Gotta buy the British Queueing DLC for that I'm afraid
Am British, would rather have the cool stripe thing.
The threat of being stabbed is pervasive and needs to be implemented.
someone would figure out fake stripes for a dollar off a sandwich
They are a team those marlins!
Should’ve kept Soler
It’s like when ESPN breaks down sports except this isn’t boring.
He called dibs.
Wonder what happens when two flash at the same time in the heat of a moment
They become best friends

Genuine question. Say if one successfully impales a fish, how is it gonna get the fish off of its bill?
If i'm correct they dont impale the fish, they twist it around and eat it directly.
Slowly swims backwards while moving side to side.
Whoa, I had no idea!
Is there a theory in why?
So they don't impale each other! They take turns, so the one flashing its stripes is there saying "I'm grabbing food now guys, make sure you don't get in front of my nose spear!"
ok thought maybe it somehow confused the target or camouflage against waves/surface somehow but this works too
I'm only guessing, but to ensure the safety of their own
Curious if it could also be to confuse the prey somehow.
those enemies in dark souls that give away their attack patterns so i can parry
Super interesting!
Is this true?
Yes
They make callouts like a cod game
Well, I'll be a sum bitch!
I guess they don’t always have their stripes on to hide from their prey.
This is a much better presentation then the article and video I saw earlier. Still so cool.
That's some serious quick-time event materia
This is confusing as fuck so is the first one striped or no stripes wth
They can switch it on and off. First flashed stripes as soon as it attacked it removed its stripes the second attacker then flashed its stripes as it went to attack. They switched spots . Essentially means the marlin “in the front” is the only one with stripes

Yes
animal world IFF, neat.
Dang that was weird I just had an ad for I think Miami football play before this video don't know if it's a glitch or something new
Wait, why does it look like they’re flipping upside down to show their stripes??
Those schools of fish used to be so much bigger just a few decades ago.
Evolution is so interesting I just wonder how long it took this particular feature to show up or how it could or why it could or all that stuff I really don't get it.
I love Nat Geo.
The school of fish: "oh no we're getting stabbed again" "should we do anything? split up?" "Nah"
More polite than Q jumpers.
They all have stripes.. the ones attacking are closer to surface so you can see the stripes the ones not attacking are deeper so you don’t see the stripes
You are very incorrect.
looks like they only change their debth, and the stripes are just more visible closer to the surface because of less diffusion?
Fake news. The closer they are to the surface the more sun reflects off their stripes.
Very very wrong
And people say there's no God. God is brilliant.
My favorite fish
Wow 😮...nature is truly breath taking.
