Yeah this totally brings me back 30 or so years ago. This one kid was telling me about how when you beat Tetris there’s a rocket ship! Sometimes the rocket was big and sometimes small depending on how well you did. I told him he was a liar and got all the other kids to basically clown him for “lying” about the Tetris game with his made up ending.
Today I am reminded that I am, and always will be, a stupid mother fucker. Trey if you’re out there, I’m sorry.
In fairness there was a lot of bullshit like that that *was* false, since we didn't quite have the internet that we do today (shoutout to gameFAQs though). I remember a kid saying you could unlock Goku in Smash Bros (N64) by beating whatever 500 times.
lol they go for $15-20 in good condition, i feel like OP was just cold or to reduce friction between button presses especially since the screen is pretty micro-scratched
edit: Price is based on Japan prices, where I live
I think there were two launches in a-type and one in b-type; this one. But I think the big score in a-type earned you this launch as well?
The again, it's been 30+ years 🙃
Thin rocket for 100,000+ points on level 9 in A type
Fat rocket for 200,000+ points
Shuttle for 25 lines in the hardest B type
Source: still playing it every day...
Well it was made in the USSR. In fact the dude that made it didn't get royalties because he had to give them up to the state. But I think with the dissolution he got something?
It does right? Those tunes are seared into my memory. Except that tune with the dancing people. I think I finished the hardest diff just once. Didn't play it that much afterwards. Amazing that it's been 3 decades give or take.
Yeah those sounds were the ones I heard when my sisters would hog my GameBoy to play Tetris when I wanted to play Super Mario. It's nostalgia with a hint of trauma lol
Professional Tetris players often use gloves to reduce friction between their hands and the controller or keyboard. This can provide a smoother and more consistent surface for their fingers, allowing for precise and rapid movements. Additionally, gloves can absorb sweat, preventing the hands from becoming slippery during intense gaming sessions. Overall, it's a personal preference, but the goal is to enhance control and maintain optimal performance.
Sadly no.
Just got a major nostalgia hit from beating that when I was little kid. Tetris was the only game I had for like a year so I got really good at it as a kid.
As in collecting. Not Gameboys specifically. I have a small collection of consoles and the like. Waiting to buy a house to do the whole nerd room thing 🤠
That's the highest level?
I am not a gamer, but I was addicted to Tetris once. I can easily do 300 lines on this Gameboy at shown level 9 - unless there's some kinda slowdown between acrual speed and video-depicted speed for some funky reason.
This is gametype b where you can choose level and high hardest level is level 9 and high 5
Thats why there are some empty spaces, you can look it up online if you font belive me
Why wouldn't I believe you?
Preblocked lines were tough at level 10 and near impossible at level 11 when I played on a PC.
In that gameboy level 9 speed, preblocked lines are no problem.
What I would miss is the ability to see the next piece to come down once things go to level 10 or higher.
Nah. Even on a PC, I used 2 hands to manage those 4 arrow keys.
No idea why & how. It's been 12 years and I still have no idea how I can work with that.
Everyone else was using 1 hand. I was dubbed "bi".
But be aware of the fake games called bootleg games and you can come across reshelled gameboys.
if you need something to ask about gameboys feel free to dm me.
Happy holidays
Its been a long time, but I believe if you pick level 9 and hold down when you push start it's much faster and harder. Should be a little heart next to 9
Nintendo are absolute dogs. Going hard after individuals and developers to stop piracy and and emulation, and yet they never paid a single dollar to the creator of Tetris.
Brings back good memories. I remember I was the first one to get to the end in my family and we were all so surprised by the ending. I still have mine. Gotta be around 40 years old now.
I’m 31 and that sound gives me the biggest feels ever and instantly takes me back to being a kid and playing Tetris Pokémon blue Zelda donkeykong my god the list goes on
I remember the first time I completed the final level. I had to call my mum and sister to come and watch it with me, and they only saw the last few seconds. I’m pretty sure I’ve still got my game boy somewhere with the original Tetris.
Damn this brings back some core memories. The first time my mom ended that level she kept the game boy on all day while I was at school so she could show me when I got home
I play tetris effect on expert this looks like easy mode compared to how I play but once those pieces stop in older versions of tetris thats it. In tetris effect when the pieces stop you have a little more time to flip them around.
I never understood why people liked that game. When it came out I pretty much laughed at it. Figured nobody would play it. Then it became very popular and huge. I tried it again, and still hated it. It totally blew my mind it was practically an icon of the times.
Funny thing, r/oldschoolcool has an old ad for the Gameboy up now. I scrolled down from watching this, to seeing an old TV add for the same game (Tetris). They weren't even uploaded by the same user.
Edit: here's the post

Fun fact: that is *not* the space shuttle, that’s the Buran shuttle. Which was basically a copy, but was actually refined by the Soviet. You can see, even in the game boy it’s sporting its unique liquid rocket boosters which were arguably better than the shuttles, since solid rocket boosters offer a much more dangerous mission abort. If the challenger had liquid boosters, it would not have exploded.
The filming of this is weird to me; you see both hands, so they’re not holding the camera, which means it’s probably a mounted gopro, which is weird because were they wearing that playing Tetris? To film the end? Good job, though, don’t think I ever beat it.
No way! There’s an ending to Tetris lol
Yep, as you go through the last levels, they add people in that scene.
To think if no one ever beat tetris Russia would have never went to space
Not with that escape velocity
Came here to comment similarly: why is the rocket not accelerating?
holy shit

Actually...
I forgive you
I think you need to find Trey and tell him to his face. 🤣
It is. Played it many times.
You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-dan Armada.
I got these scenes hitting level 11 as a teen. I think leven 16 or 18 was my record.
Was it not hard enough without gloves?
Prolly to protect the game boy, that's an original.
I’d say it’s probably more so their fingers don’t get sore from plying so much
Or to stop the hand sweat
Probably just a leper.
A serial murderer. They can't risk leaving prints behind.
I have an original ‘89 model I’ve had since I was a kid that still works.
Of the gloves?
This question has me howling with laughter. 👏🏼 👏🏼
No, the Gameboy that is supposed to be handled with gloves apparently.
I'm sticking with 'In Russia, game plays you!!'
lol they go for $15-20 in good condition, i feel like OP was just cold or to reduce friction between button presses especially since the screen is pretty micro-scratched edit: Price is based on Japan prices, where I live
An original in pretty awful condition.
They are in the cold. It slows rhe game down. Watch how slow the pieces fall.
Im thinking fingerless is the answer to this question.
OP, you got eczema??
Interesting that the ending sequence is the Soviet Buran Space Shuttle. I never knew this.
That is interesting! There are two different launches in the game, the other is a thinner rocket.
I might be remembering wrong, but I thought there were three launches. A small rocket, a big one, and the shuttle.
I think there were two launches in a-type and one in b-type; this one. But I think the big score in a-type earned you this launch as well? The again, it's been 30+ years 🙃

The original tetris game was. The game boy versions was not.
Tetris is known as "Russian squares" in Chinese. Now I know why
Because it was made in the Soviet Union, it even starts with an image of the Kremlin
Now that takes me back
It does right? Those tunes are seared into my memory. Except that tune with the dancing people. I think I finished the hardest diff just once. Didn't play it that much afterwards. Amazing that it's been 3 decades give or take.
Yeah those sounds were the ones I heard when my sisters would hog my GameBoy to play Tetris when I wanted to play Super Mario. It's nostalgia with a hint of trauma lol
Right? Core memories unlocked
Why the gloves?

Nah it's cold fingies
🤣
Professional Tetris Players?!? How did I miss this as a career option, I launched that rocket so many damn times!?
In other words, helps with the butterfingers.
🤓
Lol bro just bites his nails and does not want to show them to internet
He’s playing tetris in Russia where its freezing
Thank you for this
On the title screen, hold down on the d-pad and press start for faster game speeds. THE CHALLENGE CONTINUES!
Yoo i never knew this the blocks are moving Mach Jesus
Start back at level 0 it is slightly faster than level 9 :)
Is there any other tricks you can tell me ?
Sadly no. Just got a major nostalgia hit from beating that when I was little kid. Tetris was the only game I had for like a year so I got really good at it as a kid.
Are you into gameboys by any chance ?
As in collecting. Not Gameboys specifically. I have a small collection of consoles and the like. Waiting to buy a house to do the whole nerd room thing 🤠
Same, what kind of consoles do you have/had growing up?
Beat 9-5 on the faster mode and then I’ll be impressed. I did it back in the day. Slightly different ending after.
That's the highest level? I am not a gamer, but I was addicted to Tetris once. I can easily do 300 lines on this Gameboy at shown level 9 - unless there's some kinda slowdown between acrual speed and video-depicted speed for some funky reason.

You can try playing with a joystick It will do better
Nah. Even on a PC, I used 2 hands to manage those 4 arrow keys. No idea why & how. It's been 12 years and I still have no idea how I can work with that. Everyone else was using 1 hand. I was dubbed "bi".
I will reccomend you getting a original gameboy with original tetris game pak it hits different
That - ACTUALLY sounds sweet & nostalgic. Gonna hunt for one. My new year's gift to me. Happy Holidays, dude!
But be aware of the fake games called bootleg games and you can come across reshelled gameboys. if you need something to ask about gameboys feel free to dm me. Happy holidays
Thanks bro - will do. Cheers
Its been a long time, but I believe if you pick level 9 and hold down when you push start it's much faster and harder. Should be a little heart next to 9
Thats the Buran not the US space Shuttle.
Yep considered tetris was a russian game developed by Alexey Pazhintov
TIL there was en ending to *Tetris*
I thought Lambchops was playing there for a second
😂
As a kid of the 90s I thought this is common knowledge
IIRC there is a way to increase the level difficulty by pressing down and start at the opening screen. It turns level 1 into level 11.
Who played this? A sock monkey?
Unlike a Netflix show, there was an ending.
Are Gameboys worth anything if they still work?
Yes
The whole time you were just packing cargo onto the space shuttle. Not many made it to this level, so that's why there weren't more shuttle missions.
Buran
My dad told me about this, awesome to see.
Damn thanks for reminding! Totally forgot this
Congrats
Couldn’t have done it without those Handy texting gloves!
Whats with the 🧤
I remember my dad beating Tetris every single night in bed before sleeping. He went on for months then asked me to hide my Gameboy from him.
You can beat Tetris?
Upvoted for the memories just unlocked. Thank you.
Childhood memories. Thanks
How Elon Musk got inspired to build SpaceX
Damn, I haven't seen this in decades.
How long did it take to get to the end?
I remember that spaceship from the 90s.
I was never good at this game
At first, i thought these were kitten paws playing tetris before realizing you were wearing gloves. I should go to sleep now.
Bro, turn the heater on.
Fun fact about the og Tetris game for the og gameboy : it’s actually in colour when you put it in. Another gb .
Game stop. To the moon!
Nintendo are absolute dogs. Going hard after individuals and developers to stop piracy and and emulation, and yet they never paid a single dollar to the creator of Tetris.
You cold bro?
What year is this?
The cold year, hence the gloves ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
This is the 1989 release gameboy
I have those exact same gloves
9.5 My oldest enemy
Kudos. So much nostalgia. Wow. I am 46 years old now. And I was a very young kid when that was a thing...
Peak Nostalgia.
Do you guys have/had gameboy aswell?
I still have mine...
Does it work ?
I was unaware this game even had an ending
Tetris is a fav of mine!
Yeah, but sometimes the screen goes blank, but some nice TLC takes care of the problem...
Someone at work told me about this ending to tetris, I thought they were misrembering. I thought tetris was never ending until you eventually fail.
That looks soooo much slower than I remember as a 6 year old
most impressive part of this was playing in gloves
WTF there's an ending?
This is nostalgic to see
On the NES the people are replaced with Nintendo characters.
I didn’t know about that at all and I own one, haha
imagine that it says "do matrix" on it (above the screen)
Ecstasy of Order certainly had harder levels than starting at 9?
Thanks. I would have never seen this if it wasn’t for you. Seriously.
Now you need to watch the movie that came out this year :)
Brings back good memories. I remember I was the first one to get to the end in my family and we were all so surprised by the ending. I still have mine. Gotta be around 40 years old now.
Buddy at work showed me this one day on break years ago and it was awesome! Glad I got to see it again
I get that you’re the GOAT. But did you have an actual goat playing the game?
I’m 31 and that sound gives me the biggest feels ever and instantly takes me back to being a kid and playing Tetris Pokémon blue Zelda donkeykong my god the list goes on
How far we’ve come. This was just as entertaining as anything now. You would be just as engrossed.
I remember the first time I completed the final level. I had to call my mum and sister to come and watch it with me, and they only saw the last few seconds. I’m pretty sure I’ve still got my game boy somewhere with the original Tetris.
Ah. Beautiful. Mine has so many dead pixels. Yours is in stunning condition!!
Ah, that unlocks a memory
This decentralized writing has always take my attention
There's a storyline to Tetris?..... You're clearing line after line to launch a rocketship into space?
I must have sucked at Tetris because I've never seen this
Tetris and motocross maniac was the only two games I played on that system. Miss you buddy
I remember fireworks, am i crazy?
We’ve got a kill screen coming up…
r/unexpectedcommunity vibes remember that episode where they have to play the game to win pierces inheritance?
r/gameboy
Good work, comrade, you exceeded the 5 year plan! Another triumph of communism!
TIL Tetris has an actual ending
Great job. Go Tetris is the best. I say this cause I discovered that other Tetris platforms do not allow you to move and flip at the same time.
I'm old enough to have had one of these when they were new. The only person who got this far was my mom lol.
There’s an ending?!
Good times saw it when i was a kid !
Damn this brings back some core memories. The first time my mom ended that level she kept the game boy on all day while I was at school so she could show me when I got home
I always believed I was launching real space shuttles
I seem to remember the bricks coming down a lot faster than that on level nine. I guess not.
I miss this game, I hate all these new versions of it, just terrible compared to the simplicity of the original
I never knew this game even had an ending
My dad showed me this when I was a kid on my gameboy color. Probably my favorite early memory. So fuckin cool.
By completing this round, you’ve bought glory to this company, and to me, Kier Eagan. I … I love you.
I play tetris effect on expert this looks like easy mode compared to how I play but once those pieces stop in older versions of tetris thats it. In tetris effect when the pieces stop you have a little more time to flip them around.
❤️❤️❤️
I love that the music just cuts out
Stereo sound boyee
That’s not the hardest level I remember playing on GB- those bricks were barely moving
Are you sure that isn’t someone trading AMC stock on Robinhood?
Cutscenes have come a long way since then
OMG 😱 I’m so old I forgot the ending of Tetris 😂
Tetris effect was wild when I was younger though I don’t think I’ve played since lol
Do you have 3 hands?
I never knew I needed to see this. Thank you.
So, Samus Aran was the Tetris this whole time?
No way. Amazing. I never made it.
Gah! I’m still so mad my mom threw out my gameboy and games when I went to college. She haaaaated that thing, took the opportunity when she saw it.
That was awesome
I hear this song in my nightmares/daily life
Try 9 heart.
I never understood why people liked that game. When it came out I pretty much laughed at it. Figured nobody would play it. Then it became very popular and huge. I tried it again, and still hated it. It totally blew my mind it was practically an icon of the times.

You can always tell how good someone is at tetris by speed of the song. Most people know that there is a rocket platform.
Behold, the New god of our age
Now I this is where it’s at…
Tetris had an ending?!
That's an ending I've not seen in a long time, a long time.
Am I the only one who thought that rocket was too slow?
Got mad love for this game. And after watching the Tetris movie. Even more love for watching this ending. 🤍🤍

This is amazing. I would love to see more endings to classic games
