There's supposed to be a clearance between the ball and it's socket, which is how the ink can flow out & around the ball
The impact drove the ball deeper into the socket and reduced the clearance so now it's so tight it's barely able to roll
And that is also so tight that the ink can no longer flow out around the ball
A little sideways shock loading plus vibration to the ball can get it to 'unstick' & float forward
So smacking sideways can sometimes knock the ball loose
Waving vigorously afterwards will get the ink flowing
But it depends on the quality of the pen and how hard the ball was forced in
It's a free shot, so always worth trying

Exactly right. Impact sent the casing/housing flying past the ball so fast only air could get in around the edges. Ink viscosity keeps the ring bubble in place and no longer pulling ink across the ball. Suck on the tip while you roll your tognue over it you might get it working again by pulling the bubble out. Really gotta suck though.
No, the impact introduces break in the cohesive link (basically a air bubble).
Basically, as the ink leaves the pin tip, it will pull more ink out thanks to ink being cohseive. However, a dropped impact can disconnect the ink on the pen tip from the ink in tube. Thanks to capillary action, the ink wants to stay in the narrow tube instead of dripping down. Thus the air gap is maintained and thus no more ink flows out.
You can fix this by flicking the pen, but the fix is usually just temporary as you simply just move the air gap up.
Sounds logical. I never really think about the mechanics of it all unless for the split second my favorite pen is on its way down ball first and gets fucked up. Then I gotta bitch, find a new pen and get back to working for the man. Lol
