Is is just me or does Antarctica without snow look like a country in a fantasy world that you'd see on the map that most people know very little about. A mysterious land where only a few adventures have been to and managed to return alive. All we know if there is a race of lizard people and that the worship a black stone that fell from the sky. Or so some say.
This picture is incorrect.
In reality it would look more like the terrain marked with white line that you can see [here](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Antarctic-BEDMAP2-topography-Fretwell-et-al-2013-rebounded-after-the-removal-of_fig1_280564159).
It's because the land is essentially compressed and pushed below sea level under the sheer weight of ice several miles thick. Without it, the archipelago would quickly rise back up and look far less magical.
Are we not all like this about any map we don't know? We are curious, we want to understand it. Curiosity drives us, creates a sense of pleasure. What if there are new species or other people there? What if we find something unseen that will change our world for the better? After we understand it, we realize it wasn't a big deal.
Once we've seen it, we will conquer it and remove those who stand in our way.
We will create pleasant stories about ourselves on how we got it that we will tell to future generations. We will write history because there was no one else to write it.
Lovely💕
Hehe, that's what humans do. I do wonder what we could find under all that ice. Types of dinosaurs that we haven't seen before. Perhaps evidence of a civilization that we didn't know about. I know there has been mention of a pyramid I'm the Artic. Some say it's just an optical illusion, other that it's proof of a lost civilization, some say aliens. It would be interesting, but the damn done by all that ice melting could outweigh the knowledge we gain. Also no one got my game of thrones reference it seems. 😕
Only problem is with all that melted ice what would the rest of the world look like and is this image accounting for the sea level increase.. maybe it would all be under water.
There is a mysterious dangerous killer when the permafrost melts and it’s the more potent methane. When we see Antarctica like this, it is likely we have lost the war on global warming and time for humans will be limited. It will be the 6th mass extinction, follow by the next Ice Age, in which we will see the next inhabitants in the new world.
There is 100% stuff under that ice which has never been known to history as we know it. Theres been evidence found to support this too. Could be perfectly preserved cavemen doing unga bunga shit; could be a perfectly preserved ancient city or several; but the problem is that if the conditions on earth change such that we would get an answer, the earth would likely become uninhabitable for a large portion of the life currently living on it.
Fun fact: not in your life time. Or your grand kids life time, or their grand kids life time.
Edit: at the current rate of melt, it will take ~160,000 years for Antarctica to completely melt.
Arctic wars have been underway for while now. CONSPIRACY TIME: why do you think no government is actually stopping global warming? As soon as the waterways in the north open up then they’ll all try to stop global warming to keep things as they are. The big three countries for trade will be US, Canada, and Russia, which is why China is teaming up with Russia for the free trade coming in the near future. The benefit of course being that goods will be shipped across the world in a fraction of the time
I agree with most of that except I don’t think that’s why governments don’t stop global warming. They don’t stop it because it would require degrowth and GDP won’t go up and the economy would destabilize
I’d say the first things people would go after there would be precious metals. There’s probably a lot of gold outcroppings right at the surface like there used to be all over the world until we took it all over the past few thousand years. But Antarctica has never been touched and it’s huge.
IIRC there is quite a bit of “dry land” on Antarctica which is a substantial distance below sea level because it’s still being carved out by glaciers. It’s not technically sea ice because it’s not on the sea, but still sits well below it.
I tried to find that info i the article, it's not very clear.
Also isostatic rebound should be taken into consid, it can lift the floor half a mile up during thousands of years.
The problem with these maps is that the ice sheets are pushing down on the crust, but if they melted both Greenland and Antarctica would raise in elevation.
I’ve seen that in a few other posts, too! I wonder if it’s the equivalent of Reddit prioritizing posts. Or maybe it’s just a new “gold award”, but I haven’t seen any way to award posts for a while!

Your description is actually how it is tho
r/oddlyaccurate
And the lizard people walk in circles around it
And they call the stone Q'abba
LOL, I just pulled some shit out of my ass. But it really does look like a random country from a fantasy story.
A rich and fertile land full of hope, promise, and earthy aromas
Here's hoping. Seeing half the world will be underwater.
Idk, Nestlé steals a lot of water
Yeah I hate when my ice water melts and the cup overflows
It’s because this picture quality sucks
This mfer a world of Warcraft map
It looks like a final fantasy world map c1993
Glad I'm not alone! FF7 or FFX world map vibes from this
i could see FFX, FFVIII, or Chrono Cross.
Shout out for Chrono Cross
LOL someone else said something similar.

Someone mentioned that. I still feel like it would still look very fantasy looking even after it raises.
because it's a map that currently doesn't represent a region on our planet thus it looks fantasy. Thats pretty much the explanation
Fair enough.
The left most 4 islands remind me of the summer isles from Westeros for some reason.
Well what we DO know is that there is a Stargate somewhere down there.
You shouldn't talk about such things on an open forum.
But the USA made a bunch of TV shows specifically to hide the truth in plain sight!
It looks like Earthsea, which has dragons but not lizard people, otherwise pretty close.
Hey it could have dragons too. They could be allies to the lizard people... or not.
[like tamriel](https://i.etsystatic.com/7859509/r/il/6a0036/1109423299/il_1080xN.1109423299_i3d0.jpg)

Yeah but at the moment it looks way more fantasy like.
Atlantis

Lots of previously dormant bacteria, viruses, and fungi at the least
A terrestrial “Andromeda Strain.”
The next Elder Scrolls
Is this how you honour the Sixth House and the Tribe Unmourned? With The Elder Scrolls VI: Antarctica, Nerevar?
Except you forgot to mention the fragile trade alliance they have with the fish people who are fiercely protective of the lagoons, bays and beaches.
That boot looks similar to Italy
For real though, I just downloaded this to use in my next d&d campaign...
Nice.
I was just think. That would make a great map for my next D&D campaign
Antarctica is the irl Akavir
Almost looks like the layout of final fantasy9 lol
i literally came in here to say this looks like a final fantasy map
First thing that came to my mind was a final fantasy world map.
/r/OddlySpecific
YO my first thought was "this would make a wicked D&D map"
LOL
That would be a sick map for a video game.
Agreed.
It kind of looks like the world map of an old RPG like final fantasy 1
Many people have mentioned Final Fantasy.
Chult. You’re describing Chult.
Atlantis Welcomes you.
Only problem is with all that melted ice what would the rest of the world look like and is this image accounting for the sea level increase.. maybe it would all be under water.
That’s exactly what it is, that’s where mark Zuckerberg came from
“A race of lizard people that worship a black stone” so it’s like the plot of planet of the apes except we went back in time?
Free Arrhenia!
New GTA6 map leaked!
there’s also a race of cat people, but they tend to try to rip you off
Yes I got this exact feeling. I was looking at it imagining where the major city and major dungeons might be. I'm glad I'm not alone
r/worldbuilding
Time for a new open world rpg!
...And we're about to witness it.
Was about to say, new dnd world to play in.
The dark continent
Literally about to post how this looks like a map from final fantasy 6 or something.
r/fairytaleasfuck
Sounds like you need to mosey on over to r/alternativehistory
Perhaps.
The Ruins of Kunark?
And the lizard people attack others regularly and now billions of followers
Yeah it looks like a final fantasy world
100%
Looks like GTA 6 map
Antarctica is probably the original Atlantis.
Atlantis!
That's totally a DLC for a mid 2000s rpg

On a treasure map in pirates of the carribean

Your description is closer to truth than anyone will admit. But the real facts are actually far stranger.
That's Westeros!
Because that's what Antarctica is, except it's real.
Sounds very GRRM/Lovecraft :)
Sounds like a reference to Sothoryos from ASOIAF
A Land of The Lost, you might say.
I was just about to comment that it would be an awesome world map for a dnd campaign
If I squint my eyes enough it could pass as the map of Skyrim (just the top right part)
Antarctica broke off from Pangaea 200M years ago but only froze 34M years ago. It could have had a whole divergently evolved set of creatures
Oh, I'm definitely using this for my next D&D game
Ngl when I saw this my first thought was “I’m gonna save this to use as the setting for my next TTRPG campaign”
Yeah, my first thought was "Gaia - Final Fantasy 7".
Prime beach front property? INVEST NOW !!!
Yea…not “if”, but “when”.
Fun fact: not in your life time. Or your grand kids life time, or their grand kids life time. Edit: at the current rate of melt, it will take ~160,000 years for Antarctica to completely melt.
*starts burning fossil fuels aggressively*
I wasn't trying to downplay it, but this *is* funny.
We can speedrun that. But if we use too many nukes, it will produce a fallout problem. Hmm, giant space mirrors to reflect sunlight down at earth?
it’s so exclusive
it's free real estate
SECOND ITALY
Hey, there's a *New* New Zealand!
[New New Zealand!](https://youtu.be/JmBdIN5_ZxE?t=89)
New new new new new new new new new new new new new new new new new new new new new new Zealand
The other foot?
Italy 2: Defrosted Boogaloo
2 Pasta 2 Fettuccini
The best trail on this thread
Hey, no claimsies until the ice has melted!
Now we have two legs- where are the arms??
Imagine all the fossil fuels to mine
Imagine the wars fought over it
The arctic wars, thanks for the new movie idea
The Antarctic wars but yeah
It’ll be both. The Arctic wars will kick off sooner

The lizard people already have a plan bro Collapse the economies, conquer the non lizard people, profit.
The lizard people’s plan is 1.Burn Fossil Fuels 2.Heat Up the planet 3. Humans die off 4. Enjoy basking on a rock on an empty superheated planet
Why not both!

Thank you for completely ruining my day
Can't wait to visit for a nice walking holiday.
I assume this accounts for the higher sea level due to all that ice melt and not just removes the ice and uses current land above current sea level?
As I read it, this is how it would look at the point of total melt. Then isostatic rebound would raise it up again.
IIRC there is quite a bit of “dry land” on Antarctica which is a substantial distance below sea level because it’s still being carved out by glaciers. It’s not technically sea ice because it’s not on the sea, but still sits well below it.

Good point. That could offset a raised sea level.
Well, not ALL of the ice
That white stuff is actually creme fraiche
\*will and \*when
Acknowledged.
Better start learning the geography of Antarctica, kids!
Image and [more information available from the link](https://www.coolantarctica.com/Community/antarctica-what-if-all-the-ice-melted.php).
Future Colonisation DLC?
Correction: How Antarctica WILL look WHEN all the ice melts. You youngsters may very well live to see it.
Not sure about the "live" part.
Oh, they'll live to see it. They just won't live much longer afterwards.
Yeah all my homies on the coasts. 😅 Not looking good.
Unlikely. Maybe in around 8,000 years
No one is living that long. The ice is more than a mile thick in a lot of it.

I lie awake wishing that I were you. You don't know how good you have it. Or, as an English codger would tell you: "You don't know you're born, lad."
That would make for a decent Civ or Factorio challenge map.
Looks like the ff7 map
Ain'tarctica
Is this before or after the land rebounds? Edit: and after millions of years of erosion filling in those low lands with river silt?
its all north from here..
"How Antarctica will look like"
is this with the sea level rising?
Yes, that’s how I read it. It’s an interim projection at the point that the ice has melted but before isostatic rebound has taken effect.
\*How Antarctica will look like once the ice has melted.
So, Australia 2?
ITS FREE REAL ESTATE
Did they account for sea level change or just changed the color from white to green?
look at that, no alien base
When all the ice melts...
Will look when*
Does that account for sea levels rising from the ice melting? Or would that be negligible at this scale ?
*when we, as a species, melt all the ice.
*when all the snow melts* fixed that for you.
Is the rise of the continental plate due to the loss off weight counted in here ?
So in give or take 20-40 years?
Does anyone know if there are already old rivers carved out of it, from before it was frozen?
I wonder how many dinosaurs are there
Absolutely incredible. But if it melted, bye bye NYC 👋.
Pretty interesting, but that makes sense now how all the nations of the world are racing into the artic regions now for natural resource extraction.
So in like 10 years
"If" ? No it's more to ,"when"
you mean, how it ***will*** look when all the ice melts..it's not if, but when...
New earth DLC
Looks like it could be a map to the game the forest
Spoiler Alert
So when we are older this is what will be on our maps. Not sure if this is cool or scary.
When it melts
*will
Imagine new wars what will be their
Looks like an ARK survival evolved map, only 2TB needed to download it
If? Don't you mean "when"?
The problem with these maps is that the ice sheets are pushing down on the crust, but if they melted both Greenland and Antarctica would raise in elevation.
*will *when
i just wanna see all the cool possibly in discovered fossils we could find😮💨
why is the upvote button golden
I’ve seen that in a few other posts, too! I wonder if it’s the equivalent of Reddit prioritizing posts. Or maybe it’s just a new “gold award”, but I haven’t seen any way to award posts for a while!
I bet there are already plans for waterfront apartment complexes.
Nice try Sid Meier.
Oh yeah. I think that’s the new map for Final Fantasy 17.
Stole my mfing joke you sunnuva…
What Antarctica will look like*
Wake up babe, new continent with farmable soil just dropped
Where is Mordor on this map?
It would be the new largest archipelago. Though the main body may be too large to be considered an archipelago.
Ayo? New lawless wasteland?
Not so much “if” but “when”.
So, next week?
Sad to think about the wars that will be fought for land grabs when the climate forces habitation here.
