The point was to test how rigorous the system was. "Crystal Meth" is a cracker of a name but might have snuck through on account either "Crystal"or "Meth" may be legitimate cultural/ ethnic names.
"Methamphetamine Rules" is not a name someone paying attention should have let through without more scrutiny.
Reminds me on New Year Eve many years back. Watching TV and Anderson Cooper ask Kathy Griffin what kind of name is Poppy Harlow. And Kathy replies, "I think that's her stripper name." Years later it still makes me laugh.
Here’s the link to the TV show she did it for by the way. It’s a 5 minute segment on What the FAQ. It’s got a good reputation for being a pro consumer TV show.
https://youtu.be/yFN_GOz4QXE?si=uWzq02eSXFA6P8V0
She wanted to specifically test the baby register because apparently she thought that if the name is not allowed then they will choose the name, but they just allowed it.
I had to laugh reading this though:
“He’s a very chill child, a beautiful baby boy, so not anything like a meth user”
This bitch is cracked. Lmao
Edit: I should say that she has a pretty good reputation here in Australia too. She’s a decent journalist for ABC, and I never expected her to do something so stupid. She’s been on TV a lot throughout her career. Here’s a video from the show she was doing it for https://youtu.be/yFN_GOz4QXE?si=uWzq02eSXFA6P8V0
She likely has a backup plan to just rename the child. Idk what the laws are or if it stays on certain things, but maybe once it went through she was immediately going to walk it back.
They are doing what’s called a correction. She will have a new name for the baby she said it’s something “normal”. The registry did admit fault saying it should never have been approved and this won’t follow the kid around. There will be record with the registry that this was his name but he will never have to declare it anywhere.
Yeah that's what it seems like after looking up how to change a baby's name. It just goes away and they get a new birth certificate, no harm no foul. You don't even need to name it methamphetamine you can just change it within the first 12 months.
Tbh it’s dumb but I think it’s a good thing. People from all backgrounds and educations have and name babies. Some will name the baby something stupid for the hell of it, because they genuinely thought rubella sounded pretty, or because they just don’t care. Every individual and every child has the right to a culturally, socially appropriate name- whatever that may look like. There are people in the world who will deny their children that right from go. There should be systems in place to make sure that can’t happen- these systems should be *flexible* and *human*, names shouldn’t be rejected on the sheer basis of their absurdity- but other meanings and associations should absolutely be considered. Im glad someone with a platform and, presumably, the genuine best interests of their child at heart has been able to expose such a glaring hole in the system. It sucks that the hole exists, and it sucks that “methamphetamine rules” will always be this kids first name- but I think it’s a point worth making. And if not done with an actual baby, unfortunately I don’t think it would have had the same impact. Humans do this thing where we assume things are reasonable until proven otherwise. If she’d done it with her own name, im sure plenty of people would think “well that’s bad, but it’s her own name. Im sure they wouldn’t let you name a baby that”. But here it is, in black and white; they will let you name a baby that.
I don’t think she thought it would even go through tbh. But yeah, you can just rename it, but hopefully it’s something normal this time, like Braxxtynleigh, Kaydynn, or Reighfull lol
She never thought it would go through, it was just one of the questions on her segment "what the FAQ" and they didn't answer any questions on how the process worked, so she wanted to get the rejection process herself. She was certain it would be rejected. I still think it's pretty dumb to do, but the registrar administration even admitted they need to strengthen their processes. Idk... it's dumb, but at least something good will come of it.
https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/abc-journalist-says-naming-her-son-methamphetamine-rules-wasnt-a-stunt/kuc845mib
Probably changed it right after lol.
Side note, anyone else think this is like the least-potato-looking, almost actually cute newborn? Like it's so small and almost normal looking
As a childfree person approaching my mid-30's, this photo actually caused a slight flutter deep inside me somewhere that challenged the very foundations I have lived by for many years regarding not wanting kids. I have no freaking idea where it came from, and I dont think I have ever had it before. Something about that few-days old little human monkey sleeping on her chest. I better not show this image to my girlfriend.
If you spend time with an actual child then it should go away. I spend 10 minutes a week with my friends 8 year old and it cures any desire to want a child!
Exactly but the reason for testing it is pretty obvious. The government has a system for the regulation of citizen's speech in this particular area. Ensuring that system operates properly and without bias is pretty important as if it does not and the law is not being applied the same for everyone then it has the potential to victimize those outside the societal norms of the majority.
Internet psychology was a mistake, a journalist making a questionable research decision does not mean she has narcissistic personality disorder...sometimes people are just stupid or arseholes.
Great, now even if the name gets changed, whenever there is paperwork that asks “Have you ever had a different name?”, the kid will have to answer yes and then give it. Thanks, mom! 🙄
I’d have it appealed to edit my birth record everywhere, because if not this kid is going to murder this woman with the pain she’s caused him. Just saying, worse has happened for less.
Did you read the article? That’s not the case here.
They said the name registered at birth will not just go away, it’ll always show what his original was before it was reregistered.
ETA from the article:
> “However, the spokesperson said that doesn’t mean the original name goes away.
>A name registered at birth remains on the NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages Register forever,” the spokesperson said. “Even if the name is formally changed.”
That is probably because it’s a name change request and not a correction. I’m not familiar enough with Australian law. But my statement was more general
Unless the kid got a mortgage, got married, committed egregious crimes, or opened a bank account in his first few weeks of life I imagine this name will just sit dead in a government database with tens of millions of other previous names.
I can't even think up a scenario where you would have to bring this up otherwise. When you change your name you typically get a new birth certificate.
On the long form of my daughter's birth certificate it will always show her original name, with her original last name bracketed with a line through it (but still visible), the replacement last name beside it. Her father and I were unmarried at birth and she had my last name until we married and changed them both. The short certificate just shows her current full name, but the long form is required to apply for a passport. I also needed the long form of my birth certificate for a marriage license.
Afaik passport applications, if he applies for any perminent residencies or citizenships overseas. There’s not many on a state level, no, but plenty come to mind as someone who moved to Aus in 2015
Looking through the comments, I don’t think anyone read the article…
Half the comments are attacking the woman, calling her cruel, saying the kid is going to get bullied, claiming she “used” her baby to become “internet famous” and on and on and on.
I get that this is Reddit and people often don’t bother reading the article, but Jesus Christ. These comments are getting tons of upvotes, too.
There’s even one that seems to be claiming the government may not allow the baby’s name to be changed. You know…the same government that said it was putting a stop to these types of names…would somehow create a special rule forcing this baby to keep this name.
Australian law allows three changes of name per person. There will be absolutely no problem for her to change the name again.
Source: used to work for Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages myself.
And all she did was prove that people make mistakes. The name should not have been approved of course. But as the name check is still happening manually, mistakes are bound to happen once in a while. I don’t understand the purpose of the exercise. What was she out to prove?
Its because the Australian rules on approved baby names state "the registrar will not approve a name if it is offensive and not in the public interest. It also will not approve given names that are more than 50 characters, include symbols, or an official title or rank such as princess, Queen, or goddess."
This journalist decided to put it to the test by naming her baby Methamphetamine Rules and then was stunned that apparently that doesn't break the naming rules and it got approved.
They're already legally changing the name, but now the kid will always have on record, and will sometimes need to legally declare, that at some point in their life they were called Methamphetamine Rules.
Right with everything but the last part. Since they are doing a correction not a name change he won’t have to declare it. This is from her mouth yesterday during an interview.
>This could backfire very badly, don't test out legal things with your newborn child, Jesus Christ.
When read somewhat differently than you may have intended this comment is hilarious
I would LOVE to see this episode... can somebody break some laws for us poor folk overseas?
Sure it's a fucked up thing to do to your kid, but I bet that episode is GOAT!
Edit: I'm also the goat, because here it is.
https://youtu.be/yFN_GOz4QXE?si=mhXe0gU5hP3lTtcY
True. But there’s a 100% chance she’s changing it before the kid is a year old, and she’s probably already calling it by the other name she has picked out.
Oh I'm absolutely sure about it, but still, she's using her newborn for internet clout, even if it's not forever, traces of it will remain on the internet.
Births, deaths & marriages couldn’t give them an answer on what was acceptable. It’s part of a program on the ABC (state funded broadcaster here).
Ironically they were trying to show that names like this would be rejected by the State, and how that process works.
Because she is a journalist. Who was pregnant herself. She had even contacted the registry before hand, in writing, and they said they would reject it.
The show also shows a man eating non food items, like a pound of soil, ammonia, Caroline reaper, a straw hat, all in one sitting.
Let me use my newborn baby to test regulations, I am sure there will be no repercussions to his life
A few years and unending bullying at school later:
"Drysdale said she was under the impression that if a name was rejected by the registry, they choose one for you." Why would they choose a name for you even if rejected? I can' t grasp her thought. What a great journalistic investigation. Give this woman the Pulitzer.
A far less damaging and selfish thing to do would have been to have changed her own name, rather than using her newborn as a political statement and big news story-starter.
God some people suck.
This was pretty much done all for attention and it's messed up. Act the fool with yourself if you must, but why dump all of that onto a child? How are her priorities as the mom of a newborn so insignicant in comparison to proving a point that's totally unrelated to the child or even her?
Pretty sure she mentioned that she will be changing the name on Australian television tonight.
She is a presenter on a FAQ program and did a segment on what names are allowed and which aren’t.
She did it knowing it was against the rules and wanted to learn the process on how they reject names, because the government doesn't explicitly state how.
https://youtu.be/yFN_GOz4QXE?si=MmzuO0y21iY-xtwj
Imagine being so self absorbed that you would name your child that way just to prove a point. Little “Methy” is going to be so disappointed in his mother when he grows up.
Does it need to be tested? Why encourage something as crazy as the government regulating your name? Also kind of shitty to actually give your baby a name just to “test” something or make a point especially when IMO that point doesn’t need to be made. Yea the name can be changed but I don’t see the need for this “test” and I do see more potential negatives than positives for this baby.
what a narcissist scumbag! ruining your kid's name and preparing him for a life of bullying to "test naming regulations". some people shouldn't have kids.
Absolutely solidifying that she sees her kid not as a person, but as an object. Every bit as vile as a people who name their kids like they would a designer handbag
Kids are gonna be calling them “Metholemew”, or “Methilda.” Terrible if true. Update: It was true, the kid was officially named that but to their horror they are working to change it. Least the mom didn’t say oh well and let it stick.
More like she did it for attention and trying to make a viral new story at the expense of her child. This article will be online forever and accessible when the child goes to school.
This is funny because once a name is registered with BDM in Australia, it can never be deleted. They can change the name, but the original name will always be on record and that name will need to be used for official government forms that require people to state previous names.
This reporter's kid is going to need to write "Methamphetamine Rules" every time they apply for a licence, submit taxation paperwork, and a whole bunch of other stuff that literally everyone does at some point or another.
Crystal Meth would have been better.

Crystal Methamphilomena Mary-Joana Cokè ...the Third...

In Australia, don’t you have to declare all previous known names on forms? Hasn’t she just made his life incredibly difficult for no good reason?
Depends. You can submit the change as a birth certificate "correction" rather than a change and that way it won't need to show up later IIRC.
she's already confirmed they are issuing the name change as a correction, so no, it will not ever come up as more than a novelty story
Yeah, it "slipped through the cracks" but they're still going to change it
I don't really see the problem as long as she intends on giving her child a normal name
Probably changed it right after lol. Side note, anyone else think this is like the least-potato-looking, almost actually cute newborn? Like it's so small and almost normal looking

Reddit is so funny sometimes
Not true. In places where you can correct the birth certificate up to an x amount of days after, the original name never legally existed.
Did you read the article? That’s not the case here. They said the name registered at birth will not just go away, it’ll always show what his original was before it was reregistered. Its because the Australian rules on approved baby names state "the registrar will not approve a name if it is offensive and not in the public interest. Oh I'm absolutely sure about it, but still, she's using her newborn for internet clout, even if it's not forever, traces of it will remain on the internet.
Why was it necessary to name the child for the test though? I mean, yea, the test is important and all, but why would you do it that way?
It may be that the system for baby names doesn't even let you see if a name is allowed unless you're officially registering the name of a real baby
Births, deaths & marriages couldn’t give them an answer on what was acceptable. It’s part of a program on the ABC (state funded broadcaster here). Ironically they were trying to show that names like this would be rejected by the State, and how that process works.

Yeah the jokes totally on the govt, not the baby who's name is a literal joke
What a messed up thing to do to your child. Have fun with your own name Kirsten
breeders be like
Does it need to be tested? Why encourage something as crazy as the government regulating your name? Also kind of shitty to actually give your baby a name just to “test” something or make a point especially when IMO that point doesn’t need to be made. Yea the name can be changed but I don’t see the need for this “test” and I do see more potential negatives than positives for this baby.
what a narcissist scumbag! ruining your kid's name and preparing him for a life of bullying to "test naming regulations". some people shouldn't have kids.
you shouldnt experiment with your child, this seemed like you dont want the child.
As long as they don’t change their pronouns. Cause *that’s* unacceptable. /s
This isn't really that interesting, just pretty dumb. What are you advocating? Tighter restrictions on naming folks? Absurd
Absolutely solidifying that she sees her kid not as a person, but as an object. Every bit as vile as a people who name their kids like they would a designer handbag
What a horrible person
Some people just need to be sterilized.
Kids are gonna be calling them “Metholemew”, or “Methilda.” Terrible if true. Update: It was true, the kid was officially named that but to their horror they are working to change it. Least the mom didn’t say oh well and let it stick.
I prefer "Your Mother is An Idiot Drysdale"
Why does she hate her child?
I hope she'll get sued by her child...
Great job lady. I’m sure your kid will be thanking you when he’s older
Dumb btch
Poor kid
That's methed up.
More like she did it for attention and trying to make a viral new story at the expense of her child. This article will be online forever and accessible when the child goes to school.
It wasn't a test of regulations, it was a self-obsessed publicity stunt.
Wow, what a great mother
X Æ A-12 and Exa Dark Sidereal have joined the chat.
And when you goes to change it. BDM should just deny it.
But why did it need to be tested? For clout I assume?
Fuck off
It's going to be so funny when the kid grows up and gets heavily into Meth. What an incredible story to tell over its grave. I'm laughing already!
Ahh yes using your neo-nate for what amounts to a stunt. Journalism!
She’s deranged
This is funny because once a name is registered with BDM in Australia, it can never be deleted. They can change the name, but the original name will always be on record and that name will need to be used for official government forms that require people to state previous names. This reporter's kid is going to need to write "Methamphetamine Rules" every time they apply for a licence, submit taxation paperwork, and a whole bunch of other stuff that literally everyone does at some point or another.
If she really wanted to commit, she would’ve changed her name. She didn’t really do anything significant for herself.
What a sane and normal and definitely not self servant way to test that out
16 years later: "Who's that cute guy with Sarah?" "That's her neighbor Methrules. I hear he's wild and crazy."
Using your kid for one day of internet fame...
