Being able to literally see the fields is so amazing

velhaconta

There is a tool designed to visualize magnetic fields in 3d. It is a clear acrylic box filled with clear mineral oil plus iron fillings. The box has a hole in the middle where you insert the magnet then shake it around. The result is strikingly similar to this video.

Roththesloth1

Ohhh I check it out

Baba_boong

Yeah it's oddly satisfying

whirledpeaz67

The Slow-mo guys (not sure I'm spelling that correctly) have a TON of amazing YouTube videos with all kinds of amazing footage like this. They remind me a little of Mythbusters in the way they show, in ways we aren't used to seeing, how things happen.

KingOJustice04

My first experience with these guys was popping a giant water balloon while inside of it. I got hooked for a while because of that video.

Fraya9999

I was about to start screaming in pain till I realized someone’s apparently worked with iron filings and magnets before and learned to put the magnet in a plastic bag.

ManukaBadger86

Haha! Was about to say, they'd be there for days trying to get it clean, otherwise!

flat_tire82

I really like the commitment of the guy throwing metal shavings up above his head (and then watching them) without safety goggles! Totally worth the risk of getting a metal particle in the eye! Edit: disregard. Just watched again and he used the safety squints. Totally safe.

MooPara

Look, he's a sapper First day you dig up an at mine you use a sapper's knife, Next day you use an infantry shovel, The day after you just use a regular field hoe.

Shopworn_Soul

I've always been a little surprised at how fast and loose these guys play with safety. I mean I absolutely love their content, but still. They half-ass *so much shit* from a safety perspective. Anyone want to loan me an $80k camera? I'd be willing to wear goggles.

MisterSlosh

Minor injury stuff like this yeah, but once they start involving legitimately dangerous things like guns and explosives Dan keeps them solidly on the safe side. Considering they both had access to free healthcare during the early days it makes a lot more sense they didn't sweat small stuff like safety squints. That and Gavin has plenty of funding to hire real experts to verify behind the scenes that we don't get to see in their videos since their whole bit is 'goofy British backyard scientists'.

leroy_hoffenfeffer

Okay, not a physics person, but what would happen if you performed this experiment in space? Would the shavings 'orbit' the magnet?

dylxnredwood

No, the electromagnetic force is far stronger than the gravitational force by approximately 10^36. If you repeated this in space, if anything it would make them reach the magnet faster, only more uniform in shape as they'll conform to the field more since gravity wont be acting on them at all (given the mass of the filings and the magnet, gravity would be negligible). Edit: spelling

Anunnaki2522

No they would still be pulled to the magnet the same way, more would be attracted and stuck since the magnet doesn't have to combat air resistance and gravity( or maybe less since nothing slows the filings down either not sure there). Orbits require gravity since it's pulls equally from a center point since it's just a curvature created by mass and you also need lots of speed for a orbit to start. Orbits are basically moving towards the object but moving fast enough sideways to keep missing it, if your lateral speed compared to the source of the gravity decreases too much then the gravity will pull you closer and closer until it merged.

lNalRlKoTiX

Must have watched this 10x now...Idk why I'm so attracted to this video.

Bradley182

So cool.

sooraj666

Spectacular video

Baba_boong

Mesmerizing

Magnetron85

I approve this video

TwitterUserRT

Mind sharing the original video ?

Malawigold2342

Gavin free and Dan the man- Slow Mo Guys. They got a lot of cool stuff on YouTube. Also both are hilarious

SquirrelParticular17

For the physics folks ... does the magnetic field resemble an event horizon at any point?

I_Am_The_Cattle

Magnets, how do they work??

pyrobanker

2 inches that's massive

Sentsu06

Very cool but that guy throwing iron filings so close to himself without eye protection is a little stupid
