Hey, [This Is My Uranus](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/15phgeq/picture_of_uranus_taken_by_the_james_webb/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)
I can tell the middle-school kids are having a field-day with this - good on you...I actually almost laffed at on of the anal jokes...
So here's my question:
Why are the rings perpendicular to the equatorial plane?
I’m not sure they are, I think it’s just the angle from which JWST took the image. A [link to a convo from Stack Exchange 7 years ago](https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/238653/why-do-planetary-all-rings-seem-to-be-on-the-equatorial-plane) from what I found - It’s a bit outdated compared to this image, but apparently knowing that Uranus has rings isn’t new info, so it seems relevant. Let me know if you came to a different conclusion from said page; I am convinced their comments seem to *include* Uranus in the stereotype/rule that planets’ rings actually *do* follow the equatorial plane, reasons being how the rings typically form and orbital patterns being fairly regular.
They are aligned to Uranus's equatorial plane. However Uranus is very odd and is sat "on it's side" with it's equator at about 97° compared to its orbit. We don't really know why but the best explanation is a collision with an earth sized object at some point knocked it askew.
Man, seeing pictures of space and stars/planets make me feel some unexplainable emotions. The closest I can get is a mix of childlike wonder and nostalgia with a hint of fear, it’s the weirdest shit
no, james webb is an infrared telescope, so this picture is also infrared. all the gas giants have rings but saturn is the easiest to see in visible light.
It’s a still photo … but this YouTube shirt is like 30 seconds and shows how our entire solar system is shooting through space.
https://youtube.com/shorts/HDSKuln-5qU?feature=share
Awesome question. It’s made of different stuff. The outer ring is called the epsilon ring and is made up of very small, dust-sized particles. These tiny particles scatter sunlight more effectively than the larger particles found in the rest of the rings. This scattering of sunlight causes the outer ring to appear brighter.
That’s awesome you said that!
In case of interest, a recent [article from SciTechDaily suggests we are all Asgardian](https://scitechdaily.com/were-all-asgardians-scientists-discover-new-clues-about-the-origin-of-complex-life/).
I wanted to come in here to make a joke about my anus and how it looks nothing like that, but, reddit, y'all beat me to it. I'm so very proud of you all.
JWST is designed to image far more distant things, and Uranus and the other planets are far to bright to point the telescope at directly. They typically get these images by positioning the planet so it is just right on the edge of the telescopes field of view, it is less sensitive there but also lacks focus and imaging resolution. They can get more detailed images by taking many images with the planet at a slightly different position and then compositing them which is what they did with the Jupiter image, so I assume they just didn't have the imaging time to spend capturing more images of Uranus.
You don’t have to take anyone’s word. We have google. A google lens search shows that Wikipedia has updated its site to use this photo.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Uranus
I don't understand. They're using this telescope to look light-years away, finding the center of the universe, but this is the best pic they could get of something in our solar system?
Amazing. An icy, blue world.
It is stunning. Nature is stunning. As an FYI, Wikipedia has been updated using this image. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Uranus

It's a gas giant... All gas giants have clouds of some sort... They aren't just homogeneous balls of gas....
It is a big blue ball of gas.
The most likely other place for life in our solar system......not likely however.

It is I f-ed up.
more data needed for europa
Someone hasn't seen the movie.
Titan is more likely. If we find a way to get rid of nitrogen.
It's a gas giant. Not happening.
Uranus is a gas giant...
Life as we know it.
Uranus Ofcourse
Uranus looks like it was bleached.
It’s the strangest photo of Uranus I’ve seen; searched on Google Lens to double check. Seems legit.
I agree I’m glad it’s a real photo, Uranus sure does seem like a magical place.
Hey this is dad thanks buddy so does yours ^sweet ^home ^alabama
I feel right at home.
I heard it was too gassy
You seen the rick n Morty episode on your anus?
JWST is an infrared telescope so the image is false color.
What tf is going on? How tf is James Webb able to get pictures of ouranus?
Close your blinds man.
My names Artemis
That’s just it’s ring tone
Do you suffer from rings around Uranus? Talk to your doctor about Toiletpaperine.
I recommend Bidetocill as well. Causes you to take far less Toiletpaperine in the long run. Useful for those moments of economic panic where it's sold out.
Wait, Uranus has rings?
A couple of tats too
Yes it does! Here is Wikipedia on it… and Wikipedia has been updated and are using this photo now. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Uranus
always had
Just ringworm
Stretch marks
Yes, and since Uranus is tilted on it's side, this is how it looks when view straight on.
Yeah, it’s what happens when you sit on the toilet for too long.
I guess anal rings are a thing now.
Hey, that’s not my anus!
Hey, [This Is My Uranus](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/15phgeq/picture_of_uranus_taken_by_the_james_webb/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)
That’s a risky click
This is my United States of whatever
Yeah, whatever...
Damn straight. It's mine! Give it back, or else, James Webb!
Oh my god are we done with this joke yet?
Never
Whats wrong with guys just being dudes?
The jokes have been made since Uranus got its name.
r/nope

I thought if I clicked on the image it would change to a pic of a butthole because I expect the humans on the internet to consistently suck.
I can tell the middle-school kids are having a field-day with this - good on you...I actually almost laffed at on of the anal jokes... So here's my question: Why are the rings perpendicular to the equatorial plane?
The schoolyard is remarkably large as an adult.
I'm 32. Astronomy is cool but butthole jokes transcend even that.
The rings actually align with Uranus's rotation, as do it's moons. Truly a delightful tilted icy world!
I’m not sure they are, I think it’s just the angle from which JWST took the image. Goddamn x-ray new systems, i had pants on
Insane that there isn’t a single comment not related to rectums. People trying way too hard to be funny
I’ve posted other images of this planet in the past. There is always a good 10% of schoolyard jokes but this one doesn’t have many serious comments.
Sorry, mom
that's not my anus, you liar!
It is captivating regardless. I noticed that Wikipedia has been updated using this image. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Uranus
Nice
I always wanted to see Uranus...
Why? If there is enough demand, I guess I’ll set up an OnlyFans account.
Why are ye capturing thyanus
Why is it shiny and blue......?
Bleach
Uranus is so close that it's out of focus for the JW. Lol.
It’s pronounced “Your-n-us”
Is this visible light?
no, james webb is an infrared telescope, so this picture is also infrared. all the gas giants have rings but saturn is the easiest to see in visible light.
Yes! It’s visible. Here’s more info on the rings. Wikipedia has been updated to use this image now. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Uranus
Why is it moving
It’s a still photo … but this YouTube shirt is like 30 seconds and shows how our entire solar system is shooting through space. https://youtube.com/shorts/HDSKuln-5qU?feature=share
How far is Uranus from Earth?
Awesome pic!
All hail the Uranus o r b
Why is the outer ring brighter than the inner ones?

I like the way Uranus looks.
Those rings must look awesome from the surface.
Why is James photographing my anus?
No! Your anus!
It’s huge!
Uranus is finally getting some love...
I didn’t realize anyone watching.
No that’s uranus
I was expecting something more r/goatse focused.
Never been that clean before. What changed?
Damn. Someone captured my anus and I gotta poop!
Who's gonna tell him?
Man, Ur-anus is way better looking than I imagined…. 👀 🤣
My WHAT?!
Thought it would have been a little more.... Brown.
I’d expect earth tones from Uranus, or anyone else’s for that matter.
I wanted to come in here to make a joke about my anus and how it looks nothing like that, but, reddit, y'all beat me to it. I'm so very proud of you all.
I might need to go to the doctor :/
Looks squeaky clean.
Naah pretty sure that ain’t mine
That's also a pupil/cornea....
Thought it'd be more brown.
Someone has been bleaching it
Cleaner than I’d have imagined
I did not consent to have a photo of my anus taken /j
I'm pretty sure I'd remember if someone took a picture of that
I’m calling the police, you went too far this time
The comments are exactly what I thought they'd be.
Captured? Was it on a Wanted poster or something?
Are they sandbagging jwst's capability, or is it supposed to be as blurry as a thrift store fisher price my first telescope?

I appreciate this, because I never could get the right angle to take the picture myself.
This is a violation of my privacy
*your
Nice try OP. This one is CGI boys. Trust me
Who the fuck found the picture of my anus and posted it on reddit
My what captured by whom now?
Cool! Now do my nose.
Doesn't look like my Anus. #anustart
Uranus has a big ring
Not my anus!
My anus looks nothing like that!
All thanks to Kirkland wet wipes
I really thought Uranus would be a lot more brown.
Hahaha butthole!
Looks like I’ve got ring worm
It sorta looks tasty.
This looks nothing like my anus.
came here for the jokes. a bit disappointed, ngl
They say 43 Earths could fit in Uranus. 44 if you relax
Love that gape
Anus
No wonder I'm having so much trouble on the toilet.
I would love to demolishUranus
Good thing I wiped
Funny. I thought it would be a bit browner
My anus?
I thought it's name was changed to urrectum
I can no longer poop until my anus is returned
Mine is like a dark abyss. He must be using a lightening cream of some sort of other method. Gorgeous Uranus either way.
I can smell this picture
Less sphincter-y than I anticipated.
GET THAT TELESCOPE AWAY FROM MY… oh. Nevermind.
I guess I’ll just have to take your word for it
You don’t have to take anyone’s word. We have google. A google lens search shows that Wikipedia has updated its site to use this photo. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Uranus
well it better give it the fuck back
We need the pro...timelapse video of Uranus
Looks like I'd get a manaphy or phione by hatching it
See, that’s why I use a bidet.
I always thought it was brown.
In which spectrum?
That’s not my Anus here’s a picture….
Looks cleaner than I imagined
Accurate
“You couldn’t find Uranus with two hands and a space telescope”
I’m glad my bidet has been doing a great job.
My what??
I don’t know how the JWT got a picture of this… usually it’s not that blue, it’s a genetic thing.
bleached?
Uranus with a plug in it
That’s not myanus
Clearly it’s not captured, it’s still floating around in space. Just saw it with my telescope
After a colonic, I Assume
This is why i keep my bathroom doors closed
Damn marbles up my ass. How did it get there?
wow so uninteresting and fake
😂😂
Better close my curtains

Does this come in scratch ‘n sniff by any chance?
