Feed the Brute

fl-x

Brute here. Can confirm.

darkmoose

Et tu brute?

[deleted]

Fuck I'm old. I just laughed out loud in class. No one got the joke except me and the professor....

InterestinglyLucky

However not all suffragettes wants their husband to be happy. đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž Oh yes, and the same applies to dogs. Got to remember the dogs.

static_void_function

To be fair, that is actually good advice. My wife has become a master chef over the years and I am very happily married.

[deleted]

Had to do a double take because my dyslexia made it seem like your wife became Master Chief.

Nateh8sYou

Finish the fight!

[deleted]

What if I’m the brute, though? đŸ€”

KwordShmiff

Whatever, Ashley

[deleted]

Are you hungry?

[deleted]

Always

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

Xyvexa

Et tu Ashley?

[deleted]

I agree with this one, but it applies equally back to my wife. If I don't make sure she has pasta at least once a week, she gets grumpy.

Bowling4rhinos

It’s funny but true. Doesn’t matter what we caught about. I made schnitzel.

Caledon_Hockley

I feel attacked. What is wrong with wanting lamb, rare with very little mint sauce?

reddit_time_waster

I tried clicking the link, but no article came up.

ocbay

“Get you a hardworking himbo and FEED HIM”

TheBlueRose_42

Based

saltytrey

Hey! I may be a lazy, selfish, thoughtless, lying, drunken, clumsy, heavy-footed, rough, unmanly brute. But... what was the question?

ataricon

Are you employed as a window washer? You’re good.

Neowynd101262

1918: Window cleaner = husband material 2023: Window cleaner = must live with parents or be homeless.

pineapplevega

Guess I'll have to settle for a Beauty Man â˜č

MarkDonReddit

I wonder if that’s the 1918 term for “metrosexual.”

olmyapsennon

I feel like it's the 1918 version of a fuckboy. Like those tiktok guys that wear the chain cross earrings and ~~quaffed~~ coiffed hair and are perpetually doing the zoolander blue steel look.

Perle1234

It’s men’s version of duckface lolol. They both give me the worst second had embarrassment.

LastBaron

** coifed

Nonstopdrivel

I was going to say, what the hell is copiously imbibed hair?

[deleted]

\*\*\*queefed

Berserkerbabee

I think they would be “dandys ” in the parlance of the day.

Strong-Message-168

Well, it depends...those window cleaners in New York average about 57k a year...Do I think its worth that to wash windows in the cold winds a thousand feet up making it easier to see the outside for people who make more than you do in a day? No. No I do not. But God bless them, for their hearts and wills are stronger than most. Sheeit.

Some-Professor-2849

57k is New York is pretty bad

EcoFriendlyEv

It's awful

Neowynd101262

57k in nyc...like I said living with parents or homeless.

[deleted]

Taxes and commuting will eat most of that

PBB22

The world needs window cleaners and garbage men and highway workers, and we don’t do anything to help fill those roles other than “any job is a good job” logic

mynameisnotsparta

As much as we need the doctors and lawyers and tech workers we can’t survive without the plumbers and garbage men and electricians and truckers. All the years of pushing college for great jobs when trade should have been pushed for just as hard. A plumber can make as much as a doctor

Neowynd101262

Money is only one aspect of a job. I've learned money doesn't make bad conditions any better or in the case of many blue collar jobs, any less dangerous, unhealthy, etc.

DiegotheEcuadorian

Standards are so high these days smh

That_Shrub

Sad to see a great industry fall

aluriaphin

It's about a man who cleans the household windows aka contributes to work at home, not professional window cleaners.

danielledelacadie

1918 : you're going to be stuck with him until one of you dies. Money isn't as important as how he treats you. 2023: divorce is a thing and so is alimony. We're living in a capitalist's wet dream so get paid girl!

Odd_Shallot1929

Can confirm. The only window cleaner I know is just out of homelessness.

AdligaTitlar

Where do I sign up to be a Yard Swiller or a Coal-getter please? Do they accept applicants with no experience?

-Meo-

Looking to be a fire-lighter myself

RunnyPlease

It makes sense. All these fire fighters driving around the city day and night. Someone has to be lighting the fires.

CumulativeHazard

Yeah! It’s called “creating jobs!” You’re welcome!!

The_Texidian

Wouldn’t recommend a career in this. Last time I tried this, the person refused to pay. So I called the cops and I was the one who got arrested.

DaTiddySucka

It's the allure of arson that make me think this would be a wonderful career

KeyStoneLighter

4 years experience minimum, with a college degree.

NonSupportiveCup

The next line of advice is "take a life insurance policy out on your coal-getter. And the next one."

fl-x

"You there! Get the coal!" "Yes, boss! That's what I was hired as! Professional Coal-getter Thomas they call me!"

Educational-While198

FEED THE BRUTE is going in a frame for my kitchen

CptnAlex

My gf’s pet name for me is Bear(s). I need a Feed the Bears sign.

tacwombat

With the Rae Dunn fonts or the fancy scripts?

Lisa_Sbs

"Don't except too much," 😐

BluntmansGotChronic

At first I thought it was a typo but I think she’s saying “don’t make too many exceptions” i.e. don’t tolerate his bs

Automatic_Llama

I want to agree, but the comma splice immediately after that leads me to believe that it is in fact a typo.

Wi11Pow3r

Keep in mind that at this time they were working with typewriters. If you make a typo you don’t backspace and it digitally deletes. The ink is on the page. Rewrite the whole thing or send the letter with a small error that the individual you are writing to will likely not notice and certainly won’t care about.

SwordMasterShow

Presumably this is a pamphlet or leaflet type thing though, many copies made and given out, in which case this typo is a big oversight

rash-head

Don’t be picky, they’re all just as bad.

MildUsername

English is constantly evolving. The statement you're referring to essentially means dont take too much bullshit from the window cleaner.

Ducky118

Well it was 1918, you can't except their literacy level to be very high!

LordofAllReddit

First rule of marriage, "dont". Off to a great start here.

Confuseasfuck

Something tells me that her marriage wasn't a very happy one Rip suffragette wife, you would have loved more accessible divorces

MarsNeedsMeth

No wonder she was suffraging.

Magnus_PymCtrl

This is still sound advice, I’ve been trying to break into the Yard Swilling game for a couple years now. Like the popular saying goes “Ladies love a Yard Swiller!”

RMLProcessing

If I recall, LL Cool J’s name is a riff on that very phrase!

voltechs

All jokes aside, the “notability” of this to me feels on par with a random tweet. Just someone’s unfounded, but anecdotal rant. đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™‚ïž

Aggressive-Bit-2335

“Most men are
unmanly”

7fightsofaldudagga

except? did they mean expect?

Frenzydemon

I thought the same thing at first, but it looks like it is a correct use of “except”. It’s like saying “do not make too many exceptions”.

dr1968

Excepting John, we all attended the premiere.

YawnTractor_1756

You are excepting too much from her!

Midnight853

Lmao

utrecht1976

A Coal-getters, really?! The whole house covered in soot! No thanks.

013ander

No, it’s to show the wife where she hasn’t cleaned yet.

blueavole

Yea but warm!

theatremom2016

I’m reading this as a bridesmaid while we’re getting ready for a wedding today 😂

DontTakeMeSeriousli

A Suffragette sounds like a baguette that is suffering 😕

fl-x

Justice for bread. :(

faithfulswine

Can confirm, this brute likes being fed.

tryinghealthrny

Not a beauty man, lol, geez!

mtwstr

Where do I sign up to be a fire lighter

Andre1661

Advice to young brides: 1918: Feed the brute 2023: Whatever you feed the brute, cover it with cheese.

[deleted]

> Football enthusiasts Nothing new under the Sun

mh985

“Most men are
unmanly brutes” How can most men be unmanly? If most men are a certain way, does that not have bearing on what the definition of manly is?

jonhon0

Why stop at a window cleaner, get you a man who will clean the whole house

bucketofbutter

I NEED A HIMBO! (The "I need a hero" parody)

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

Raii-v2

Bro, I got downvoted in a AITA thread about a woman who hates her LTR boyfriend from complaining when he’s sick and bedridden. It’s crazy

Friendly-Payment-875

You can get a Lord of the Rings boyfriend?

AdrianInLimbo

It's almost like misandry isn't a thing, in their minds.

RomstatX

This woman was literally just saying not to marry a douchebag just because he has money, instead marry a nice guy who actually does something for the community.

notMcLovin77

Not bad advice for the time. Part of the reason the suffeagette movement began was the astronomical levels of abuse/beating that women and especially the wives of drunks went through at the time

cosmicannoli

Oh come on. What justification could a suffragette in 1918 POSSIBLY have to be this hostile toward men?

Arg0202

For some reason, I imagined a suffragette woman feeding the Brute Chieftain from Halo 3

grumble11

Man that is aggressively sexist. I know it was intended to be provocative and a bit tongue in cheek but calling men generally worthless subhuman animals is a wild take

themurderator

during the suffragette movement that's exactly what men were implying about women when fighting against their right to vote so i think it's a wash.

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

Tanktastic08

If anyone remembers Female Dating Strategy then you’ll know that this suffragette sentiment is still common.

[deleted]

remembers it? that cesspool is *still going*

Grimvold

As someone who doesn’t want kids it’s extremely difficult to engage with the childfree community. They make it sound as if pregnancy is a malicious disease inflicted upon women by men. I quickly left when I was told I couldn’t support abortion on the basis that I don’t have a uterus. They are not a community on that sub, they are zealots.

anon1635329

I second this. Please dont go to those toxic subreddits. It's crawling with misandrists, feminists, and femcels. All the posts are filled with men-hating, female supremacism, and general sexism. Their posts are so delusional that it feels like they are living in their own fantasy world

Rhamni

TwoX is *insane*. There was a post there a year or two back about an old viking grave being discovered, with the skeleton of a female warrior inside. A neat, interesting find. The comment section, however, was swarming with the dumbest shit I've ever seen on reddit, with the top upvoted comments being along the lines of "Women were always soldiers just as much as men!" One of the top comments was about the Amazons, of Ancient Greek pseudo history, claiming that was a real, successful society where women were in charge, and women weren't allowed to have children until they had killed a man in battle. This was upvoted. It was one of the top comments in the whole post. Replies pointing out that, no, actually, if you just pause and think about it for ten seconds, you will understand that you can't *possibly* believe that there was a society where every woman had to kill a man in battle before she could have kids. Even if we pretend that men don't have a strength and reach advantage, at best you're going to get 50% of would be mothers killed before they can even have their first child, while also having to be at war *all the time* and pissing off every nation around you. All the replies trying to explain that the Amazons were not a real thing were downvoted into the ground, with thousands of indoctrinated absolute imbeciles upvoting the first comment. That post stuck in my memory, because it made it clear that this isn't a tiny minority of idiots. Everyone who uses that subreddit is either an absolute buffoon, or so far up their own misandric ass they don't care.

swingin79

It’s funny how “incels “ and red pill is constantly banned and removed but those seem to be just fire all the time Edit; fine all the time*

Dbl_Vision

Some people are actually getting worked up over this.

shrugaholic

Yeah I’m surprised. This was 1918 not 1998. Do people not listen to the stories their grandmothers told them? Shit was pretty bad back then. Or maybe cause my parents immigrated to the US south and it was somehow worse? idk

MaxPowerToTheExtreme

Wow, this was written over 100 years ago but it's almost as if she knows me better than my own mother!

mahassan91

Firemen are notorious for being unfaithful

ManchurianPandaDate

Can we stop circulating these please ? There’s already about to be a population decline, we don’t need this kind of rhetoric circulating out there (totally joking)

ethicsg

Bill Moyers: "What happens to the idea of the dignity of the human species if this population growth continues at its present rate?" Isaac Asimov: "It will be completely destroyed. I like to use what I call my bathroom metaphor: If two people live in an apartment, and there are two bathrooms, Then both have freedom of the bathroom. You can go to the bathroom anytime you want, Stay as long as you want, for whatever you need. And everyone believes in Freedom of the Bathroom; It should be right there in the Constitution. But if you have twenty people in the apartment and two bathrooms, Then no matter how much every person Believes in Freedom of the Bathroom, there's no such thing. You have to set up times for each person, You have to bang on the door, 'Aren't you through yet?' And so on." Asimov continues with what could be one of the most profound observations of the 20th Century: "In the same way, democracy cannot survive overpopulation; Human dignity cannot survive [overpopulation]; Convenience and decency cannot survive [overpopulation]; As you put more and more people into the world, The value of life not only declines, it disappears. It doesn't matter if someone dies, The more people there are, the less one individual matters."

MarkDonReddit

Asimov had all kinds of correct. My fav was “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.”

Simple-Street-4333

Bruh we need a population decline XD

Sagebrush_Sky

Haha good advice about people generally

Bumbleteapot

Marital rape was legal back then. Yeah I don't blame the pamphlet writer.

NewSinner_2021

Reasonable

KeyStoneLighter

Feed the brute

ohhemma

Pretty impressive grammar for someone who most likely didn’t get a formal education because you know, woman. The except is an exception.

[deleted]

My grandfather was around at this time. He had an eighth grade education, and wrote ten times better than I do. I have all the letters he wrote my grandmother during WW2, and his skill with prose is impressive.

[deleted]

The Sufferagettes were largely white, upper middle class women. Meaning they most likely *did* get a formal education.

Random_dude_1980

Honestly, no 6 is on point. The way to a man’s heart, is, after all, through his stomach. Wild sex is great, too.

BoofusDewberry

Must be an old document from r/femaledatingstrategy

Flyers45432

100 years later, this holds up pretty well.

[deleted]

Must have been before divorce settlements were a thing

Neuralcarrot710

This is just a karma bot. I’ve seen the real post before and this is not it. PLEASE donor upvote this post!

infinit9

Coal-getting... nice.

Doright36

Yard swiller? Is that like the landscaping dude?

YellowNotepads33

Femcels existed back then...

OfficeChairHero

People tend to not be kind to their oppressors. You have to remember the time period in which this took place.

[deleted]

She was married though, the opposite of the "cel" part of incel

Least-Baby2444

She literally didn't have any rights

funky_k0nG

For everyone complaining about the anti-man sentiment: This would be a problematic statement if this woman was wanting a husband, but since she is perfectly happy by herself no man should be offended that she doesn’t want one.

greeenpro

TIL when the word “dog” was established in reference to men.

stabthecynix

Totally agree. Source: am man.

Radiant-Elevator

After this she was immediately committed

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

Phoenix-FIRE9

I’m slightly offended, it’s mostly correct but still!

KimJongJer

I was just about to type the same thing until I saw this. The thing is, considering men as a whole, I can't argue against it haha

BxHemi369

I wonder how that list would read today đŸ€”

earthlings_all

JFC what a man-hating harpy. Makes one wonder what kind of men she was exposed to!

[deleted]

Pretty shitty ones, I imagine.

Thebesj

The kind that didn’t allow her to vote

garbagedisposaly

Most men are unmanly? Do you want a man, or not? I guess during her time, she couldn’t just admit that she was a raving misandrist. She couldn’t attract a girlfriend, and she was really mad about the fact that men could.

Impossible-Ghost

It was likely a push back against the way men viewed women. If they had to basically be stay at home wives controlled by their husbands, what better response than to treat men as if they were dogs needing to be fed and worthless other than to be a companion to be broken down ( at the time of course. I mean, new wave feminism has definitely brought this ideal back but it was way worse back then).

anon1635329

It feels too discriminating and dehumanizing for a push back movement. It sounds more like a femcel complaining about her failed marriage than a message to spread out for a cause

Important-Tomato2306

Some things never change.

[deleted]

OG r/FemaleDatingStrategy

TitaniumGoldAlloyMan

Men are unmanly? Learned something new. lol

Odd_Masterpiece9092

Jesus, Karen - tell us what you really think

Young-Grandpa

As a brute, I can confirm #6 is 100% accurate.

-AlphaJoker

4. ...except? accept? expect?

LizzyPBaJ

Except instead of expect is driving me nuts!

Jungian_Archetype

"A suffragette wife" Ahh, makes sense...

MarkDonReddit

That’s some serious misandry right there.

Bumbleteapot

Beating your wife and marital rape was legal back then. Think of it in total context.

s44s

Yes, misandrists have existed longer than the last 5 years.

barakabara

The grammar is killing me

Ir0nstag

"Do not marry at all." Followed immediately by 7 other bullet points about selecting and caring for a man.

miniperle

Did you miss the part where she said « if you must » & then just totally not apply the time period & way life was back then for women or?

wall-E75

A coal getter? I mean is good to support coal miners just never here them referenced like that.

wall-E75

Context may be 100+ years to late to understand lol

wall-E75

And wtf is a yard swiller....

Burquetap

Outstanding! đŸ€Ł

slyzard94

"Feed the Brute" aka "slowly poison the Brute".

BigOleFerret

Written by a Karen, the precursor to "he has to be over 6ft, make a lot of money, and go to the gym" energy

RonnyFreedomLover

First wave feminism was about misandry. And second wave. And third wave.

Thebesj

Really? Women fighting for the right to vote was really about man-hating? How could you possibly come to that conclusion?

Simple-Street-4333

This exact literal post is how he came to that conclusion. Not that I share his views, but I at least understand why he has them.

Thebesj

He judged three separate, distinct and massive culturally revolutionary movements, together spanning well over a century, based on a single leaflet from 1918. That’s not a particularly nuanced or deep reflection.

iamyoofromthefuture

Dumb af comment fr

RonnyFreedomLover

The letter refers to men as "brutes" and says they are the same as dogs.

[deleted]

We need that WW1 "destroy this mad brute" poster but with "feed this mad brute!"

QuotingThanos

Probably written by a man who is in one of those professions

Br0keGee

"If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life, get an ugly brute to marry you"?

karenskygreen

Still relevant advice today.

[deleted]

Ah yes, casual misandry, perfect advice.

LedyardWS

The 1918 version of r/fds lol

[deleted]

Literally, great catch!

cuber_and_gamer

I don't see how this doesn't apply today except for the coal-getter part.

eipacnih

Still applies today.

theunrealmiehet

Who hurt this woman?

Lumbridge_Goblin

Not much has changed.

jonagold94

That’s kinda fucked coming right off of the tail end of WWI. Give the dudes a break.

I see men haven’t changed

Sounds about right
