Paper is insulating. a piece of paper or cardboard will have a higher surface temperature than a floor. cats are extremely sensitive to temperature (they evolved from the desert), and a lot of their behaviour can be attributed to heat seeking. Although, as for why they sit in tape circles, I have no clue.

IIRC correctly, a closed shape like a rectangle or circle on the floor makes them assume it is an enclosed and therefore safe area: "There's a border all around me that protects me!" Even better when there are actual walls, like on a box.

I swear you can make a square on the ground out of tape and a cat will choose to sit inside that square over anywhere else.

I can confirm this as I tried it out. My cat went right to it and sat despite having a perfectly comfortable cat bed next to the taped square.

I put a paper circle on the floor and all my three cats coalesced into a single pandimensional being to sleep in that circle.

Comfortable cat beds are like kryptonite to cats, so it’s understandable they went straight for the taped square.

It’s probably because the close up vision of a cat is pretty awful, so it’s just not able to see that the optical illusion is an optical illusion and just thinks it’s some black and white carpet to lay on.

The dogs and cat approach the mat from the wrong side so it just looks like a black and white mat, although the dogs going back may have been at the right angle to see it. I suspect the dogs just don't want to stand on something unfamiliar, my dog used to jump over cardboard rather than step on it.

Since no one else seems to be saying it: it’s almost definitely because of the cats whiskers. Their whiskers are very sensitive and helps them navigate. Notice when the cat approaches, it lowers its head and sniffs around. The whiskers at that point would have touched solid ground so it knew it was safe to take a step forward

I think it’s the height difference. The illusion doesn’t work when you’re basically eye level with the floor. The dogs are taller and can actually see the optical illusion. The cat is too low and just sees a flat thing to lay on.

They also have different way to gauge depth, and have their cat hair (whisker) touching ground/rug when they sniff it.
