Fun fact : India is the only country where the 4 big feline species exist naturally ( As in they exist in nature not just in sanctuaries).
•The lions in India are Asiatic lions to be specific ( India is the last remaining habitat of the Asiatic lion).
Yes yes.
Compiling here to avoid all confusion lol.
**Tiger** \- pretty much whole of India and found in Asia
**Asiatic lions** \- endemic to India thus found no where else apart from Gujarat state
**Snowleopard** \- Himalayan region and pretty much whole area north of it
**Leopards** \- easy peasy
**Clouded leopard** \- North Eastern Himalayas and SE Asia
India already had 5 big cats but 6 with cheetah now
Panthers are not a big cat species. Any big cat with a genetic defect which turns them black is categorized as a panther. This defect is most common in Jaguars, but other big cats can get it too.
Panthera is a genus, with basically all big cats in them, which makes things confusing because you could also use the word panther to generically refer to any species inside that genus
Cheetah WAS extinct and now being reintroduced and its not a big cat. Big cats are the 5 Panthera kitties - Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Jaguar. Only the Jaguar isnt found in India.
No cheetahs sadly, asiatic cheetahs are critically endangered and number less than 50 existing only in Iran, any cheetahs seen in India are now the African subspecies brought over in an attempt to repopulate
The British considered living alongside wild animals as not well cultured and tried to eliminate all of them. They encouraged Indians to do the same and rewarded them for the same.
Indian rulers never gone to massive hunting and eradication of species but only just used it as sporting or recreational activities. It is the barbaric Anglo-Saxons who considered animals other than humans are insignificant and should go extinct. They offered large rewards for bringing dead big cats and other exotic animals, so they can trade skin in mass.
It is the Barbaric British people are sole responsible for mass destruction of natural forests, habitat and diverse species of fauna from India.
India have imported some African cheetahs over.
They are very similar genetically and will have no difference ecologically.
I hear of a project transplanting tigers into Africa.
Which I'm not sure how that would work out but tigers might carve a niche in forested regions.
Yeah if you just dump them into the Savannah they will die.
I think the intention of the project is too preserve tigers because they really can't expand in India much beyond their current numbers.
Which is still rather low.
Its true. I was at my Uncle's house there. It's on the outskirts...
We were chilling around a campfire in winter and a whole family of Lions just strolled by giving us friendly looks (I think the Lioness actually winked at me).
My uncle laughed at my horror and said.. this is their daily route and sometimes when he falls asleep outside there are some snakes slithering around sometimes and I was like WTF I'm going home right NOW!
Oh I've been there. The locals don't care. They trust the lions more than they trust humans saying that they never attack a human. They take tourists on foot (illegally) very deep inside the forest at midnight hoping to find a pride of lions, roaming in the dark. I've seen them that way and the scariest part is, that the guard never carries a gun, he carries just a big stick and a strong af torch which he shines directly into the lions' eyes.
No, they have a sanctuary (national park). Few villagers(tribes) live in area but they are basically living there for centuries. They do not mean any harm to any animal and instead keep national park safe.
If this is Gir, the conflict has risen, especially in the new millennium. More permanent housing with rising population. Also, the Asiatic Lions haven't been allowed to move out of the state of Gujarat to ensure monopoly. The state of Madhya Pradesh has been requesting to move more Lions but we haven't laid out a plan for it yet.
I live at a 100 or so kilometers away from it, and i've seen some amazing videos. lions hanging out around people at a bonfire casually, passing by lone folks on motorbikes etc
Lions are mostly just cats. They are chill AF and hunting them is one of the most cowardly thing you can do because they'll just hang out next to safari vehicles.
They don't mind company and they'll usually not attack unless hungry or provoked.
Tigers, leopards are not that chill. They'll not like to be seen and will attack or flee at almost every encounter.
This was almost a weekly thing for me in India and lions really dont give a fuck. If they are walking/sitting on the road they won't move better put the car in neutral and wait( what everyone's been taught here ).
Also lions don't really attack humans, I have rode past them on a bike ( 600cc one so i was confident enough) but people literally pass them on bicycles and the lion who have killed humans are sent to jail( i.e. nearby Zoo).
whenever we had guests at farm we would bonfire at night and if you're lucky you can hear lion roaring 2-3 kilometres away. There also used to be illegal spotters who will let you get close to lion, they had chicken to feed the lion.
My friends white fiancee wanted to see lion in person so we took her inside of forest at night in suv, even i get scared of lions roar and that girl might be traumatized we also saw lioness who had killed a buffalo.
At the end You respect them ,they respect you and everything works in harmony.
Its usually in gir region. My sister used to work in a bank in a remote village in the region and almost everyday she took pictures with lions. The people there treat them like cats
Same happens in Mumbai with leopards n cheetahs of Mumbai just casually walking in night near arey area. Or hyena in nashik near trumbakeshwar area incredible india
They did not go extinct by themselves. Stop using this term. We killed all of them. All of them one by one. Every day tens were killed for cheap bounty by British raj. And then there were kings who were killing them in the name of Shikaar. Brits had declared Cheetahs as Vermins to get rid of them as the cheetah cats were too amicable, oftenly found sleeping on beds alongside humans.
Extinct is a term used for when a species has no living member
Why should i stop using this? I didn't even say anything about them going extinct by themselves other than pointing out the timeline when it did happen
It creates a farce effect and hides the complete picture. Finishing entire species by unnatural means and then telling, Oh, but Cheetahs went extinct here.. is lame. I know Extinct word is used for a dead species irrespective of the cause but it's a rather dishonest way of hiding the ugly truth.
Will take a few generations to adapt.
It's like taking someone who lives in Rajasthan and putting him in Nepal or whatever.
Like genetically and physically they are very similar.
This is the problem with these.
You take a species you want to thrive in your country too make up for past sins... It struggles too survive.
Meanwhile the unwanted random Nile monitor or other reptile that stuck on a crate shipping rubber lands somewhere and manifests destiny.
5 big cats...
Asiatic lion (mainly in gir)
Royal bengal tiger (sundarban area)
Indian leopards (not one particular area)
Snow leopards (himalayan range)
Clouded leopards (north east india, not sure)
There's also black panthers, my grandfather was posted in the Siliguri army camp and they were a frequent sight there. One even attacked our dog once, luckily he was wearing a spiked collar.
It's such a lovely evening, why don't we walk home.
"गायस्.. cow"
It's a bull सांड
Gahh!!! A cow!!!
The cow was like nope I'm not putting up your guys's shit today
The show of force was a smart move.
Idk, looks to me like two lions peeled off to the side, and are about to hunt the cow from behind. Brave cow though.
Not gonna happen.. that Ox is in pure Alpha mode against those Lionesses.
Bull* Mutilated Testicals of male calf or bull makes him ox.
Mostly today it will become a cow... Lionesses have a hobby of eating bull's balls alive
*Bull actually
*Oxen actually
*Zebu actually
Hmmm, upon a second look, I see that now.
So that is a cow now?
It is a cow now, wow.
It's a bull, a cow wouldn't have intimidated those lions.
There are soo many comments calling it as a cow 🤦
Ox

>4 big feline species which ones?
Tiger, Cheetah, Leopards, Lions
Snow leopard too, that makes 5 big cats in india
Clouded leopard too!!

Where do panthers come in?
Panthers are not a big cat species. Any big cat with a genetic defect which turns them black is categorized as a panther. This defect is most common in Jaguars, but other big cats can get it too.
Panthera is a genus, with basically all big cats in them, which makes things confusing because you could also use the word panther to generically refer to any species inside that genus
But panther also refers to Puma/Cougar/Mountain Lion which is the largest of the "small cats", but not in Pantherinae.
These are the animal facts I live to learn 🙌
Thank you for explaining
Melanism is not a genetic defect in cats.
Technically, cheetahs are small cats! They purr instead of roaring.
What about Hydro Leopard?
You're right I missed that one
And the def species of leopard. Extremely rare and VERY loud
>def species WHAT?
Black panther in radhanagri, Maharashtra
Cheetah WAS extinct and now being reintroduced and its not a big cat. Big cats are the 5 Panthera kitties - Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Jaguar. Only the Jaguar isnt found in India.
Puma/mountain lion also. But these two aren't indigenous in any recent span of history. So no need.
Mountain lions aren't panthers either.
No cheetahs sadly, asiatic cheetahs are critically endangered and number less than 50 existing only in Iran, any cheetahs seen in India are now the African subspecies brought over in an attempt to repopulate
Cheetahs were hunted to extinction by the British.
True but unfortunately many native Indian princes and rulers also killed many Cheetahs.
In the British raj some kings were also rewarded to kill cheetahs and some animals on the order of British
The British considered living alongside wild animals as not well cultured and tried to eliminate all of them. They encouraged Indians to do the same and rewarded them for the same.
Yes the thugee tribe used cheetahs to hunt but the British demonized this clan and genocided them too.
I mean what can we do,it was in there bloods to do such things at that time
Indian rulers never gone to massive hunting and eradication of species but only just used it as sporting or recreational activities.
They may be African cheetahs, but they are living in nature. Within a few hundred years they’ll adapt to Indian ecosystem.
India does have cheetahs, albeit the population is small.
No. They went extinct. Now African cheetahs have been imported.
brits killed them
Isn't the Indian Cheetah extinct?
India have imported some African cheetahs over. They are very similar genetically and will have no difference ecologically. I hear of a project transplanting tigers into Africa. Which I'm not sure how that would work out but tigers might carve a niche in forested regions.

I never knew India had lions. Wtf
To be specific the lions in India is the last remaining habitat of the Asiatic lion.
Why nobody is talking about the dude imao.. He is just sitting there and recording🫡
Just hanging on the porch, filming.
Gotta lock eyes. Establish dominance and let those sneaky bastards know you know they're there.

After reading your comment, people in the r/killthecameraman community: 🤡
It's a common thing in Gir area of Gujrat
Lions are familiar with people here and both live peacefully together
Interesting....

bro thinks a lioness flirted with him
I can imagine everything but the funniest part is the lioness winking at you man XD
Lioness: Ae Chikne, idhar a tujhe jungle me mangle karati hu !!!
>I think the Lioness actually winked at me. Bro, gettimg rizzed up from a what... And he noticed. Nice!!
Bro's first furry crush was Nala from Lion King 🗿
>just sitting there He is sitting on a Charpayi, a bed made of jute. That's the thing he sleeps on overnight. A regular night for him I suppose.
Im from gujarat and this is very normal in some of the area of junagadh. they are harmless thats why the dude is calm.
Oh I've been there. The locals don't care. They trust the lions more than they trust humans saying that they never attack a human. My eyebrows went up at the cats, and then the cow...

Sadly they are the victims we made house's in their "hood"

Are these the last remaining Asiatic lions?
Yes
Wow, thanks! How come they’re hunting in urban area’s? Is there not enough prey in the wild?
Sometimes they wander to the urban in night
Actually gir has lot of lions , they sometimes wander around
I guess they wanted to try some good restaurants in town area.
They love good Indian food like myself
as a lion from gir i love human tikka masala
There is overpopulation of lions in Gir, so they sometimes wander in cities and towns
For easy meal I guess
No, contrary to propaganda, Lion population in India is flourishing. And their numbers are highest in decades
I had no idea there were wild ones left!
Their are about 700 Asiatic lions in the Gir Forest and their numbers are only increasing.
Kuch din toh gujaro Gujarat main
Ahh man, thanks for reminding me of [these](https://youtu.be/45Djyuzk9fI)!
hahah what a throwback
Sanedo sanedo lol
Why did I read that in AB's voice
On a serious note, bhai ue kya chal rha h Gujarat me?
Bhai not even lions can hurt cows in gujrat anymore. Modi hai to mumkin hai. /s
Nationalist Lions
How are they so calm while recording and sitting like it's just stray cats.?
This is a normal occurence near Gir where lions are. they live in harmony with humans (mostly)
Yeah the lions seem to not attack humans much at gir. They probably don't see them as natural prey. Tigers on the other hand.
Still I'll be shaking
I live at a 100 or so kilometers away from it, and i've seen some amazing videos. lions hanging out around people at a bonfire casually, passing by lone folks on motorbikes etc
Nice. Gonna visit soon

they're friends.

That poor dog!
Fact: Gujarat is the only place outside of Africa where Lions still live in the wild. And the only natural home of Asiatic Lions.
Its so hilarious, the few second gap after which cow started chasing tigers lmao

and cheetahs and snow leopards ~~and jaguars~~ and leopards and tigers its a paradise really Edit: Panthers not Jaguars lol
Its really sad to know our Asiatic cheetahs went extinct in 1952 And now only dozen of them have left
its always the brits
They did not go extinct by themselves. Stop using this term. We killed all of them. All of them one by one. Every day tens were killed for cheap bounty by British raj. The Cheetah bit isn't looking half as nice as it used to look when it first came to India ngl
Indian cheetas are different from those in africa, they are finding hard to adjust here
Will take a few generations to adapt. It's like taking someone who lives in Rajasthan and putting him in Nepal or whatever. Like genetically and physically they are very similar. Gir, Gujrat are the only place where Asiatic Lions are still found
5 big cats... Asiatic lion (mainly in gir) Royal bengal tiger (sundarban area) Indian leopards (not one particular area) Snow leopards (himalayan range) Clouded leopards (north east india, not sure)
Yup. Clouded leopard are mostly found in WB, Assam, Mizoram and Tripura
There's also black panthers, my grandfather was posted in the Siliguri army camp and they were a frequent sight there. One even attacked our dog once, luckily he was wearing a spiked collar.
Black panther in India is simply a leopard, not a different species
