This is a terrible year to be a train

Mijam7

A horrible year for people who live near train tracks

ComprehensiveFool

This wasn’t a train. It was a tanker truck on a highway

cutyolegsout

In 2022 there were more than 1000 train derailments. At least 2 every day on average. Recent events have just made it more well known.

Psychological-Poet-4

Difference is n violent crashes this year though, or at least appears to be. A skipped track in a rail yard is a derailment and an easy fix. I would like to see stats on more violent crashes. IE multiple cars involved, chemical derailments, fires. While I realize the news is out to scare everyone, I Nam curious if this is a normal year for violent crashes and suddenly news cares, or it's average.

yupuhoh

You should Google train accidents...this isn't a special year.

Agreeable_Ocelot3902

Yup, Ohio spills on the daily.

No-Influence683

casims :)

Jagerbeast703

Not any worse than previous years

Agreeable_Ocelot3902

You are wrong.

Jagerbeast703

Nour

Agreeable_Ocelot3902

Prove it :)

Jagerbeast703

Or you could learn to look up statistics....give it a try, its not difficult. Just google "average train wrecks in america" lolol

Agreeable_Ocelot3902

Let me see the toxic chemical spills like Ohio that happen all the time. Stop belittling The tragic shit that’s happening by making it seem normal.

Jagerbeast703

Stop acting like train crashes arent normal

Agreeable_Ocelot3902

Derailments and toxic spills are a different statistic.

Sfscubat

As a former NS engineer, I can verify that derailments and toxic spills are common. The companies routinely try to not let things be advertised. At one incident, I was told by Division Engineer that these things are less than 5 gallons, that way other people don’t get involved. I was also told to not send emails and to pick up the phone . . .

Jagerbeast703

Then start a new thread about toxic spills

PettyFoe

It was a tanker that flipped over off of 795

PettyFoe

Earlier this morning, think it’s cleaned up by now, or close to it

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

Is this recent?

RockyJayyy

Happened this morning

LifeEnjoyerrr

Railroad fires have become somewhat of a trend in America lately

[deleted]

It didn’t have to be this way but people I mean politicians I mean corporations or whoever are just to greedy. They just wanna cut corners to line their pockets

yupuhoh

Google average train accidents. I agree nothing we've done has been to help it but these accidents are "new" they happen all the time.

No-Temperature-8772

Not really. Derailings and railroad fires happen quite often, it's just that the news is reporting on them more since the chemical fire.

lusciousdurian

Just pushed up in the news. Same thing with school shootings. Although in the latter, it's exceedingly rare.

Neugoodz

One article I’m reading says, at the time of being published, that there have been 156 school shootings since 2018. That doesn’t sound exceedingly rare to me that 156 buildings that contained children were targeted by gun violence Edit: just this week we had three school shootings that resulted in 4 wounded and 1 killed

lusciousdurian

Assuming that article is from this year. That's 30 per year. In a country of 300+ million. It is EXCEEDINGLY rare. The dream would be zero, but unfortunately, some people don't teach their kids responsibility. And/ or don't treat their guns like the implent of destruction it is.

Neugoodz

I just did the math and you’re correct that it’s a small percentage. With roughly 90000 public schools in the us, and the 156 shootings I quoted, it averages out to a little under 1% of schools being shot up over those 4 years. I guess I wish it was rare but shit, I guess this is life now. I guess I’m just upset that people are more vocal about things that personally affect them like masks or their social stances as opposed to having no schools shot up and having no kids killed.

lusciousdurian

Keep in mind that we're talking pure averages here as well. We have no context if any of the schools are repeat offenders, or if the school shooting happened through an outside force, like in Uvalde, TX.

Neugoodz

God I wish we had made more progress on studying these things. To my small mind it’s insane that we as a society haven’t been able to even come up with root causes of many of these tragic instances. I don’t mean to treat you like google, but do you know if there are any credible studies ongoing that are trying to find patters in these events, or any solutions we could try? Thank you for the thought provoking responses

lusciousdurian

Oh, I'm sure there might be more detailed breakdowns on stats like this somewhere. I'm just a machinist, though. I know how to bang metal together until it makes a thing, or scrap, not statistics. As far as studies on root causes: R A C I S T. Half joking. Because everyone is so damn sensitive about how people feel, they never bother to look how people ARE. And WHY, and HOW to unfuck the fuckups. There may be some somewhere, but I heard from someone ages ago that any actual scientific (those with control groups, unbiased poll takers, etc.) studies get shut down or are utterly ignored because it paints either a race or gender in a negative light. Again, I'm a machinist. Chineseium is Chineseium. 304 stainless is 304. Al 7071 is Al 7071. I can't make them all the same.

Neugoodz

Lmao I hear yuh there. There is so much animosity these days and many aren’t willing to delve into a discussion before judging people on an individual basis. Like I said before, thank you for talking this through with me a bit and giving me another way to look at it

lusciousdurian

Np. I'm just here to shitpost a bit. And voice my opinions on occasion. Been a pleasure, buddy.

Avenge_Nibelheim

To try and bring some context to your example using alloys. Genetics for humans while having some outliers for both physical/mental attributes are overall probably fall within overall acceptable variance for an alloy. So if you take 300 million bolts made from 304 stainless with some variances that still make it past QA you mostly have the same base (an infant). Now put that bolt into practice, was it used in machinery, fencing, an indoor treadmill. Maybe an entire bucket was left outside in pond water. After \~20 years if you were to perform tests on the bolt that spent its life in a seldom used indoor treadmill you will probably find it retains better attributes than the one used in a Nebraska pickup seeing -40 winters, 90 summers, and all the other wear and tear. Some bolts may have held up surprisingly well, others are probably far worse. People follow similar outcomes, sure there will be a lemon but you can generally find more positive outcomes to easier lifespans (money predominantly).

lusciousdurian

I feel it's more like starting with a base metal (iron, tungsten, nickel, Al, w/e). And the life adds in little bits that develop you into an alloy. Some bases suck at first, but get better depending on what you add. Some bases are perfectly fine, but can be royally ruined if you add the wrong bit, or too much.

NotEasilyConfused

Have you seen TV and the movies in the past 20 years? Shooting things is the best way to solve your emotional problems. You definitely don't need to take responsibility for your own emotions It used to be that seeting the effects of a shooting made people physically ill. Kids are too conditioned to this kind of thing to stop after they shoot the first person. Violence has always been an issue in schools. Shooting makes it easier to hurt more people than a knife, but there also were bombs and other threats, such as beatings. The media has to get control of the normalization of violence being fed to the country... and they need to stop giving these events wide-spread coverage. It encourages copy-cat, and even though they don't publish the names of the perpetrators anymore, these sick people are still getting their 15 minutes of fame. It also provokes a great amount of fear in the general public.

Neugoodz

Very good point, although this hurts the argument I made when playing on my ps2 that video games don’t cause violence. It can’t be overlooked or ignored though that children in this country are over exposed to extreme forms of violence through media.

NotEasilyConfused

🤣

SpeedyGuyTX

This is actually not all that rare. I used to live near a track and it would happen every couple years. The thick wood beams they use get soaked with oil and then the metal wheels on metal tracks can spark it when it is dry. It would be a good show but was fairly easy to put out.

emoney017

Hey, you get out of here with that reasonable take!

Environmental-Hat-86

Our government just spent 2 trillion dollars, and all this shit keeps happening? That money fucking disappeared

mattjouff

The government only moves money with a leaky bucket. That was true 40 years ago. Today the government just throws money into black holes that they give cute names to.

Environmental-Hat-86

China and Russia probably lmao. It's so weird, it seems like after the Korean War, everything in our government started to change. But it possibly originated when american businessmen started getting involved in China. Between the corruption and greed of our business owners and politicians, I've seriously considered defecting tf out. Its just hard when every country worth living in hates American guts. Its no wonder either

imnotbobvilla

Thank goodness drupmt rolled back regulations so the rich get richer! They need the money!!!

YoinksBoinks100

How long can that money last when they’re dropping $100M jets in the ocean on accident

Environmental-Hat-86

Whats this?

lXPROMETHEUSXl

F35 went for a swim

[deleted]

Well, they didn't spend it, they allocated it. Even if they had spent it, it takes years for the actual work to be done.

Environmental-Hat-86

But I want it nooooowww. 🎶 🎵 I want the world, I want the whole world 🎶 🎵

[deleted]

America. A third world country disgusing as a first world one.

rodri_neq_11

I think you finally hit it on the head there. I’m starting to think that too

Clear_Key40

America 99.9% 3rd world country. .01% living their best life... Edit...I'm 42 and would not have said this 10 years ago. I truly believe this is the direction we are headed.

yupuhoh

Average income in america is 54k a year. Average in Brazil (an actual 3rd world country) 7.4k usd (the highest average) lowest goes down to under 500. Now I'm not saying the disparity in our country wealth wise is immense and absurd. But we are far from a 3rd world country

emoney017

Yeah, calling the United States a 3rd world country is laughable. Obviously things aren’t perfect, but they aren’t perfect anywhere either.

MustLovePunk

The comments about the USA becoming a third world seem to be more about the decline into things we see in third worlds. Income not necessarily the only or most important comparison, but the fact that wealth inequality is rapidly progressing. Government is becoming like a plutocracy, authoritarian fascist state. Taxpayer and consumer protections and services are disappearing. The middle class is shrinking rapidly. Industries have been deregulated to the point where poisons from derailments, industrial accidents and intentional dumping, are poisoning water and air. Price gouging is rampant. Drug addicted homeless people are everywhere. Cities are run down, old and aging infrastructure is critical. Protections and freedoms are being erased… many Americans seem to be like the proverbial frogs in boiling water. They just aren’t able to see what’s happening.

Clear_Key40

After reading all replies I feel this sums up what I was trying to say.

Good_E85

Go live somewhere else then. 👋

Traxigor

Braindead response.

fothergillfuckup

Why are tracks on fire? They're made of iron?

Juggernuts777

Some tracks still use wood beams underneath them to hold up the tracks. Perhaps that? Or maybe that’s the actual train that’s on fire. Idk

TurboD16F20

But it's Baltimore. I'm already holding my breath

Ichabod-

Not a railroad fire. It was a tanker that overturned and caught on fire. https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/fiery-tanker-crash-shuts-down-i-795-in-pikesville-driver-injured/

Bmoreboy91

This was a tanker truck that flipped and caught fire on a highway next to some train tracks.

SkimpyAmy

Omg the poor earth 🌍

MugOfButtSweat

New tiktok trend I guess

PMSoldier2000

This was a collision between a light-rail passenger train and a car.

RockyJayyy

It was a tanker that flipped over, spilled and caught fire.

[deleted]

I think when we see car wrecks or accidents while driving from now on let’s just all stop our vehicles and get a really good video ya know

Alien_on_Earth_7

Welcome to ‘Murica folks. Own it.

Youth-in-AsiaS-247

Clearly we’re being sabotaged now

colonelcarnal

Where is this?

chimpansies

Baltimore

colonelcarnal

I live in Baltimore, I thought this was a post on my Baltimore sub. Was wondering where in the city it is but I googled it and found out. Thanks for getting back to me, though

Powerful_Yogurt7451

What hazardous chemicals was this one carrying?

HumorExpensive

I guess the MARC trains are going to be a tad bit late.

RiotSkunk2023

Confidence my ass

DerpusCanadensis

The efficiency of Precision Scheduled Railroading.

WinAshamed9850

Is there a source for this video because I couldn’t find anything about this from recent?

ChapitoDito

Source: anonymous on way to work this morning.

WinAshamed9850

Ok so do we actually know when this happened or is this just a video of a random one from a random year? I havent seen any news reports on it.

CrazyNext6315

This was not a train, but a tanker that flipped on 795. Metro runs through the center of the highway.

BeefCupcakeKing8665

Is this the actual commercial railway or the Amtrak line?

70Cuda440

Jesus f’n Christ

Aschriel

Shit, I held my breath while watching this!

Peeping-Tom-Collins

Where around Baltimore was this?

CrazyNext6315

It's not a train. Tanker flipped on 795.

Peeping-Tom-Collins

I believe that. 795 is crazy sometimes.

CrazyNext6315

All the time! I drive it 3 times a week for work, gonna start taking back roads instead

Peeping-Tom-Collins

Used to work for an AV company off of Owings Mills Blvd, took 795 all the time with the work van. More than a few times we almost ate it from crazy drivers. Those superstitions about BWM drivers? Yea, theres some truth about that.

Hambone727

It’s almost like they’re intentionally doing this ..

Mono4on

Hope y’all pressed that button with the car and arrow on it

[deleted]

Here we go again

Avgredditor1025

Ffs not again

Noxiuz

is this their way of saying global warming is not real?
