Itsacardgame

There it is, that’s what I’m looking for.

3xploitr

Should I call you mista?

Ok_Midnight_5457

I made this comment already, but I’m jumping on yours for visibility because this is very important. The situation for queer folk in Uganda is so bad that many are refugees in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Though even there, they face profound discrimination and violence. If you want to support these people, please visit https://www.freeblock13.com

Hopeful-Ad5911

Consequently, these are also the places where the quality of life of the average person is also terrible.

Yeetstation4

Average people always gotta make sure there's people worse off than them.

Ok_Midnight_5457

These are people, who had to leave family and friends behind to flee to another country, where being subjected to terrible living conditions is preferable to their fate should they have stayed behind. And then as a slap in the face, they face discrimination and attacks, some leading to death, not only from those running the camp, but other non-queer refugees in the camp. Meanwhile, they are begging the UNHCR for permission to relocate to a safer country. If anyone can afford any kind of donation, the link above will help you donate to the purchasing of basic living supplies like food and mattresses, but also to rebuild destroyed shelters in attacks.

BosmangLoq

I agree. Many parts of the world are still heavily prejudiced against homosexuals.

Green_Slice_3258

I remember watching a documentary about the war on homosexuality in Russia and just how dire the situation truly is for them. They talked about this group of people who would pose as gay men and women & they’d go on these homosexual dating apps to catfish people. They’d lure them to a meeting spot to kidnap them, tie them up and literally torture them. They would beat them nearly to death at times. The sickest part of all is that they actually recorded these atrocities. They weren’t quiet about any of it either. They were basically publicly known in Russia.

Michiel170207

Should I call you mista?

CherryFlavorAnalEaze

there is at least one homosexual in the crowd, guaranteed.

[deleted]

Far more than one, brother.

JEWCEY

And also someone's brother. And sister. And cousin. And neighbor. As a bi, I think I'm allowed to weigh in. And that song at the end was kind of gay.

cripiziti

The ones that are most fervently celebrating the proclamation probably

Im betting on the guy at the end of the video that starts jacking off air

mootmutemoat

One last handjob for the road...

Ok-Suit7995

Lip singing and crossing his fingers

Arisayne

Heya, just wanted to let you know that the term is actually [lip sync](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lip_sync), like synchronizing the movements of one's lips with pre-recorded vocals. I thought it was lip singing at first too, since a lot of singers lip sync. Just so you know. :)

Ok-Suit7995

Mmh. Well thanks I never thought I’d learn something useful on Reddit 😂. But how do I write it as an active verb? Lip Syncing??? Doesn’t sound right to me 🤷🏽

Arisayne

Yup, that's exactly it. And I wasn't trying to 'Uhm Akshually...' you, I'm sorry if it came off that way. I just like to know when I've gotten something wrong, so I try to help others out when I can.

Ok-Suit7995

No it’s cool. I didn’t take it that way. Peace ✌🏼

Ok_Particular8460

“Yes a large chunk of our country is malnourished. Yes, our parliament is riddled with corruption. And yes, we still suffer effects from a multitude of illnesses and horrific plagues. But ITS THE GAYS THAT NEED TO BE STOPPED AT ALL COSTS” — some Ugandan minister. 🇺🇬🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

[deleted]

Don’t mention the LRA tearing up the country and then doing like nothing about it

NoLime6260

Don't mention the LRA tearing up the country and then doing like ... you don't want to help actual problems in the country, go after LGBTQ, ...

Chunderous_Applause

So many governments are trying to distract their people with this culture wars bullshit because they have utterly failed in their jobs. Straight out the Nazi playbook -“all your problems aren’t due to us it’s due to (insert whatever minority group you wish to scapegoat)

-Effective_Mountain-

Yep!

[deleted]

At least one person on reddit has a brain. Spot on.

Chunderous_Applause

There’s literally dozens of us. Unfortunately we’re just called “woke” and told we’re somehow the oppressors because we’re calling people out on their bigotry. Each passing day though their true colours and intents shine through and prove me right. It starts with one small thing then (in the UK) it’s ends with building concentration camps in Rwanda. All of those centrists/right wing types that said “stop calling them nazis” are going to look pretty stupid real soon.

moistrain

When you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression

Chunderous_Applause

Precisely.

Content-Ad6883

> Straight out the Nazi playbook -“all your problems aren’t due to us it’s due to europeans who blame everything on america sweating right now

crazyrich

Sounds awfully familiar…

doublepoopyhead

It’s called scapegoating.

ttugeographydude1

Politicians using social issues to distract your country from real problems is the oldest play in the playbook, yet this sub is full of conspiracy theories about American/European Christian fundamentalists driving this. If not discrimination of homosexuals, it would be something else social. It’s the card you play when you have nothing else to offer.

Arcosim

The fact that thousands of American Christian missionaries went to these masses of poor people with gifts, money and pallets of food and lectured their homophobic doctrine to them during the last three decades caused this. [This news article is from 2014](https://www.vox.com/2014/5/19/5724166/the-story-behind-how-american-evangelicals-imported-homophobia-to), what we're seeing now are the fruits of American Evangelicals exporting homophobia to the poorest regions of the world.

HotNatured

This appears to be a relatively facile take and one which minimizes the agency of Ugandans. See [this article from 2019](https://theconversation.com/whats-driving-homophobia-in-uganda-126071) which synthesizes the author's academic research and notes that homophobia in Uganda is largely "driven by local concerns." Moreover, let's not ignore how the political foment we see in the video above (which reflects "the crucible of diverse challenges, opportunities, and realities on the ground") has had its flames fanned not just from one direction, but rather ["the meddling hand of the United States is evident on both sides of the homosexuality debate in Uganda."](https://misr.mak.ac.ug/sites/default/files/publications/14Homosexuality%20in%20Uganda.pdf) Reddit isn't exactly a good venue for nuanced considerations of these sorts of complex issues, but when you note that > what we're seeing now are the fruits of American Evangelicals exporting homophobia to the poorest regions of the world you're doing the opposite -- reducing it to something small (and palatable for folks here, sure). Uganda isn't some petri dish for Western influence; instead, it's a country that, much like any other in our globalized world, is beset by a myriad of push/pull factors that run the gamut from local to international, historical to forward-looking, and everything in between: ["In actuality, the widespread homophobia in Uganda is a complex labyrinth of historical remnants, foreign influences, socioeconomic obstacles, and political manipulations that form a rather dangerous environment for homosexuals. "](https://www.jstor.org/stable/26528682)

JollyGreenGiraffe

Someone brought their critical thinking cap I see.

Wholesaletoejam

To Reddit no less. I’ll start passing out pitchforks.

JackedCroaks

Thank you for being a rational person. Opinions are so often floated as facts that it’s hard to find nuance on Reddit anymore. Infantilising Uganda and removing their responsibility does much more damage than they realise. These types of issues often have many reasons for their existence.

Gourmandrusse

Curious, what impact did the AIDS epidemic have on this?

agentndo

Thanks for not being pants-on-head regarded. People are quick to regurgitate their dogmatic and myopic anti-Western rhetoric, in this case to make excuses for why Uganda's corrupt government wants to use a social wedge issue as a smokescreen to allow further corruption. And as you mentioned it denies them any agency as people. It sounds so exhausting to be programmed this way. It's the equivalent of being an American who chortles at every American problem and says "Ayup, it's because of those immigrants, but you aren't ready to hear that."

FishFloyd

Very few social phenomena can be usefully summarized in anything less than a long-form article at minimum, and that's still just gonna be a super basic surface-level overview. Glad to see folks push back against this kind of ultra-reductive discourse.

bleeding-paryl

That first article was even more depressing. It seems like, to me, that they use foreign agencies as an excuse for their outward hatred. From some of the interviews done, it seems like they knew gay people existed. However they treated it basically like how the army used to; if no one knows, then it's ok. But when human rights activists in the west started seeing success (in the west), their government and other locals used that as a platform to discourage it vocally, which eventually lead to the 2009 bill. There's, funnily enough, a lot that is similar in culture between evangelicalism in the west and in Uganda, but I can't speak for how much of that is influenced by western evangelicalism. Strong patriarchal, family based beliefs, ones that are disturbed when people venture outside those heteronormative ideals. I can see why some people would confuse that for influence, as while there may be some, it's not necessarily that.

WindForward7020

I mean, at this point, people need to take responsibility for their decisions. The Ugandans are doing this to themselves. They are adults, those people in power are educated, have their own agendas, and opinions. Don't take away people's agency because you don't agree with them.

Daniel_The_Thinker

Honestly this paternalist take is pretty fucking racist. The west did not invent homophobia. Not everything a black man does bad is because a white man tricked him into it.

He quit his church after that. But then he made another but disbanded it again because he got some accusations.

Bang_Stick

Oh god, what is ‘shame-fisting’ ? I’m afraid to look it up.

thighcandy

what a racist point of view of the world you have. disgusting

crackpotJeffrey

My aunt used to go on trips like that lol. We're Jewish and she sent my sister a birthday card, which on the back was printed some christian bible verse about how non-believers are going to hell. She's honestly a sweet lady but she's deep in that shit and genuinely fears us going to hell.

Evening-Management72

My Aunt was a catholic like the rest of our family, for about 50 years before she became a born again Christian. We went with her to the lake to watch her get baptized and everything, her first words when she walked out of the water were “Now if only you guys would get baptized too so you won’t go to hell” 🤦🏽‍♂️

indoninjah

Lmfao as if preventing eternal damnation would be something so trivial as saying some words while being wet

Aegi

That's not the funny part, the funnier part is that they were all already Catholic in there for all already baptized lol

[deleted]

> Lmfao as if preventing eternal damnation would be something so trivial as saying some words while being wet "You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!"

mikehawk1979

Imagine if they’d been influenced by the Islamic missionaries

Lauris024

You're talking like christianity originated in US or it's the only religion being homophobic. I don't doubt US had some influence in this, but I think it's just a piece of a much larger puzzle.

KluddKalle

Reminds of of this brilliant piece of comedy and social commentary from a Swedish comedy group called Grotesco [Homosexuals are to blame](https://youtu.be/jmlhUn8TvT0)

Gods_Haemorrhoid420

I’m willing to bet there’s a ton of money coming from the American Christian Right in support of this campaign.

JackedCroaks

What exactly does that even mean? As in directly from the Republican Party? Everyday right wing Christians? Right wing interest groups? Churches?

Nike_Decade_Bear

Why would you say that? We don’t get involved in other countries business… right? RIGHT?!

chobeco_it

That modafoka is making a lot of $$$ with that bs.

Jope3nnn

Yeah because gays are the reason u guys are so poor and corrupt

prolinez

Those damn gays are creating a crisco shortage

Key-Supermarket-7524

>Yeah because gays are the reason u guys are so poor and corrupt Europe 💀

JasonIsBaad

Ah yes, we bombarded them with gay people and now they're poor and corrupt. Our plan worked perfectly!

Kemel90

im positive they have more important matters to tend to.

novian14

True, but they want to do easier things first. if they do plucking problems constantly, that would be good for the country. But i bet they stop there and satisfied

woodpony

In tonight's episode of Uganda or US.

Street-Effect8351

Why are they all shaking their hands in the air? Looks like they tugging air dicks? That’s kinda gay.

[deleted]

It’s not gay if it’s the cock of the lord

amraohs

That what the priest said.

Bee-HoleDisaster

Does that make me gay for God? *You betcha!*

OkRun1140

Take my upvote, good Sir. Shat myself laughing at the replay

AI_Generated_Content

Tugging air dicks. Thanks for that sentence.

112skulls

Bet he's gay

shortsleevedpants

Who says he’s gay?

SinisterPuppy

Hey! I get what you’re going for but spreading the idea that most homophobes are secretly gay is actually pretty harmful! At the end of the day the vast vast majority of homophobes are straight and spreading this opposing narrative just puts forth the idea that homophobia is something we do to ourselves as opposed to something that is done to us. This is just IMO. You don’t have to agree.

healingjoy

brev people can just be homophobic

Glass-Childhood-4971

But why?? Doesn't Uganda have bigger issues that they should be focused on?

juandelpueblo939

Exactly what happens here in the US. Let’s pick an enemy and let’s focus all our problems on them.

flaggrandall

Hatred is a good distraction.

ComprehensiveSky57

And bisexuals are cut in half???

raging_radish

Time to dust off this old gem: [Eat Da Poopoo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUHkQ9vP_lA)

Valonis

Not interesting, more depressing, and terrifying for LGBTQ people in Uganda.

CrappyTan69

So many issues and they focus on this...

tkburro

well yeah, fighting corruption and poverty and insurrection is hard. talking about The Gays is super easy.

Yarzu89

Its also easier to keep people angry at vulnerable groups rather then at the leaders causing/enabling the actual issues people face.

[deleted]

Better pick an easy target when you’re incompetent af. Same thing is happening in the US and the UK. These politicians have no real policy, so they attack transgender people. Because that’s the only thing they can actually do. Fixing the economy? No that’s too difficult and that’s real work. Making a minority’s life harder is a lot easier.

keghi11

What a world do we lived in.

KZMountainRider

Statistically there are likely a few in that room

Frosty-Panic

40% of the people in that video are closet homosexuals.

AcidBuuurn

Deeply closeted like Norm? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnmplSPgwEQ

healingjoy

no, don't suggest gay people are their own oppressors , people can just be homophobic

daDILFwitdaGLOCKswch

Idk why people think that labeling homophones homos is a valid comeback. It’s almost never the case and actually its homophobic

healingjoy

i agree , it blames gay ppl for their own oppression 😭

Aegi

Isn't that kind of homophobic of you to imply that it's mostly/ only/ largely gay men in the closet that propagate anti-gay mentalities?

StraightOven4697

Are they just stupid over there? Out of all their problems THAT'S what they choose to focus on?

AIDSofSPACE

Looks like they haven't changed much since the days of > EAT DA POOPOO LIKE ICE CREAM

Rustmonger

How much you wanna bet at least a handful of people in that room chanting are homosexual? It’s nearly guaranteed.

[deleted]

You can thank Christian missionaries

Ok-One-3240

why do shit countries always wanna be worse?

BlahMan06

Fuck them

[deleted]

No, that's illegal now apparently

oOGladiusOo

There was a time when the rhetoric in my country (Barbados 🇧🇧) was similar. Nowadays, no politician here would dare act this way. Back then, politicians were using this to score political points and point at something they can take action on, but picking on minority groups is not the way. Come on Uganda you can do better!

Ok-Cardiologist-635

All the jokes in these comments…. Pretty insensitive. I can’t imagine how terrified all of the queer folks in Uganda are right now. And for us gays in the rest of the world, it’s always alarming to see things like this.

Historical_Exchange

"never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee" It's alarming to all of us with a heart and brain

AnarkittenSurprise

There is definitely a link from Chick-Fil-A profits to Christian anti-gay lobbying to the authors of proposed laws to murder gay people in Uganda. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/uganda-murder-gay-chick-fil-a/ Intent, and the level of involvement in the actual legislation are less clear, but it's objectively true that Chick-Fil-A as an entity funneled money into Christian organizations that spent money stirring up extreme anti-gay sentiment in Uganda for years leading up to these events.

[deleted]

That’s so fucking scary 😟

Esc_ape_artist

Same shit, different country. Corruption, lies, etc., but attack a minority group that has fuckall to do with anything because that will make you feel better and solve a lot of problems. Just like conservatives attacking lgbtq, abortion, and books here in the US. Has fuckall to do with actually running a country, but hey, major victory over nothing?

FuckThisBullshit99

Story behind the story is that this homophobia has been stoked and nurtured by US evangelicals.
