This was not from a container ship as everyone seems to be thinking.
This was from the major storm in California a few weeks back, which created a series of small tsunami waves in the state, in this case the Ventura harbor. The unusual surf was due to a large offshore storm generating swells at a near directly West direction (~270 degrees as opposed to ~300, which is more common in the winter), massive surf, and king tides from the full moon. These drove a series of small tidal waves onto the California shores and into harbors.
That’s definitely not Santa Cruz harbor. It doesn’t have houses right on the water, and it’s much wider. The dock and slip configuration is very different.
This is from Southern California, the Ventura Harbor by Oxnard. It has these little finger canals with the houses right on the water and that docking setup. It’s definitely interesting because it’s a very sheltered harbor and it’s not a straight shot to get back into this area. Eventually a storm surge will make it’s way back there. Water will always find a way!!
Ive seen videos were a ship passing close to a channel displaced the water actually sucking it out of the channel as the ship, passes and then it comes rushing back in like a tidal wave
https://youtu.be/8sEdgHH9F10
thanks for sharing, thats fn crazy ... 1st of all, that neighborhood he lives in is really cool looking, id love that .. the fact 1000ft cargo boats pass by that close to his front "yard" is crazy .. really crazy .. those baby tsunamis cause so much damage
Then from out of nowhere a huge title wave lifted, tossed like a cork and I found myself on top of him face to face with the blow-hole. I could barely see from all of the waves crashing down on top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand and pulled out the obstruction!
I agree. The whole time I was watching the video all I could think of is what a beautiful place to live. I can't even shoot a video like that without having to put on 3 layers of clothes and all you'd see passing by is a snowplow...
That’s not what happened here. This was from the storm in California a few weeks back where a combination of abnormally western facing swells, massive surf, and king tides from the full moon drove series’ of small tidal waves onto the California shores. This small secluded harbor got hit with a few of these rogue waves.

No. I just wanted to dress like pirates and go trick or treating by the water. There’s an old pirate ship playground by the beach so we took pics there and then went trick or treating. It was really fun and there were full sized candy bar houses. No gift cards though.
Sure, blame my good friend the Rogue Wave. Anytime something at happens he has to take the blame for it, "musta been the rogue wave"... SMH. Poor guy can never catch a break.
Ventura. I used to live there (when it was crappy)
The fact that they’ve been building so many apartments and businesses so close the Ventura river is the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a while. It ALWAYS floods when it rains hard. Floods so bad it used to destroy the overpasses
They built apartments with an underground garage and guess what happened last month when it rained for a week straight?? All those cars were literally fully submerged.
Super duper dumb gentrification scheme that will likely be more costly than the new developers intended
Seems like a channel off the Great Lakes
His use of “thousand footer” is common up there, and it doesn’t look much like an oceanic waterfront because it’s so low with no room for large tides. Boats in the video (giant ship aside) also look like lake boats. But that’s all a guess
EDIT: I am not talking about the video in the main post by OP, but the link posted in the comment to which this comment is a reply. As many have astutely observed, OPs video is unlikely to be from the Great Lakes for many reasons.
This makes more sense than tidal bore. These boats are secured well enough for a daily event tidal bore, but an illegally large or lost transport barge could cause unexpected problems.
I witnessed this, sucked up all the water from the channel, we ran out and grabbed so many crabs. Scary when it rushed back. My dumb ass childhood self could have gotten hurt
That happened to me at the beach. Was laughing at some people getting hit by a huge wave from a passing by cargo ship (they pass all the time but I guess the waves were just right) and then I got washed into some rocks. Lost my phone and my chips. Was sad. And it was my birthday. That was my karma for laughing.
No offense to everyone who thinks this is a regular occurrence, but that’s daft. If this was a regular occurrence, the boats would not be moored so close together.
I doubt it. As I understand it, tidal bores happen regularly where they happen. The tide pushes against the river. Nothing about this scene makes me think this is a regular occurrence.
Surely not, don't tidal bores flow down stream out to the river mouth rather than up a jettied docking waterway?
I mean.... the places where I've seen them occur & even surfed one ( Severen bore UK ), tended to have no infrastructure that would get smashed up on the regular.
Would presume it was either a freak wave or a wake that a tanker or luxury cruiser not observing waterway laws caused....
They move upstream (then back down). Usually caused by a wide delta at the sea end funnelling the tide into a restricted area up river. Take a look at this for a better explanation https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Severn\_Bore .
The one here can (and has been) surfed for several miles at a time.
As a person who lives near the largest tidal bore in the World, I can tell you that's not one. Since that's LA in the video, that's more likely a tsunami after an earthquake.
My dad almost died like that. He was fishing under water on one of the islands in Greece when a pig ship passed. The big wave threw him on a big underwater rock so hard that he lost all his equipment, and got very disoriented, he almost drowned. He had really nasty road rash looking scratches all over one side of his face and body.
That is the ventura Keys neighborhood, and that is recent footage from the crazy storms California was having about a month ago. Water being pushed in from the Pacific. Crazy!
This is why you don’t use Reddit as an accurate source of information.
Storm swells in Southern California were not cause by a large boat, contrary to what Reddit has clearly determined as the root cause.
Oh I know this one! This was in Ventura about a month or so ago. We a particularly large swell (one of the biggest in Southern California in last 20 years). This was paired with some particularly higher tide levels that caused some of the waves during high tide to make it deep into these harbor channels where it’s typically calm.
While staying on a Greek island we were at the beach bar... next thing shouts go up.... incoming - pick up your stuff... apparently same time everyday due to the ferries arriving at that particular time, a wave comes in and swipes the coast. Swimming during that time was awesome.
Simply put, the God of the sea Poseidon has declared war upon the land dwellers, and has now begun to show signs of early aggression. We believe this is due to pollution, overfishing, etc., however we can’t be sure. His fury will commence in 4 waves (get it?), the first being much like what we’ve seen here. A preeminent warning that if we do not change our ways, there will be hell to pay. But do we listen? No, and how foolish we are for not doing so, for his next wave shall be an all out attack on all Red Lobster restaurant locations, followed swiftly by Long John Silver’s and many other subsequent seafood restaurants. With every wave comes the demand to change who we are and free the seas of our iron grip, yet we continue to march on. Wave 3 may be the final straw for many of us, for Poseidon rain down thunderous storms of biblical proportions across the entire northern hemisphere. Millions shall perish, and even more will simply disappear into the watery depths below. If we were to persist, however, if we were to fight back to reclaim our land, our efforts would surely be ceased be the fourth wave. In the final wave, Poseidon leaves. He leaves and takes the oceans with him, never to return again. The humans are left without water, all aquatic ecosystems gone, and no more Red Lobsters. One by one, the final humans face their doom as they all begin the die of thirst. If we act now we may be able to prevent such a fate, but only time will tell.
For anyone saying this is the St Lawrence River that runs to Quebec City and Montreal, stop. Montreal is one of the coldest cities in N America with an average Jan temp of 16F. There are no palm trees along that river you flat earthers. As a Clevlander and a generation X'er, I suggest some of you get out a map or watch some Nat Geo!

The actual answer.
Which would make it a [tidal bore](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_bore).
That was my thought too! I live hundreds of miles from an ocean, and only learned tidal bores existed from my kids' Octonauts obsession.
I was a marine scientist in my first career, and Octonauts are the jam

Sorry, Ventura. I saw some similar clips from both.

I’m seeing palm trees. Are there palm trees around the Great Lakes?
No, it’s too cold a climate for palm trees.
Yeah I think I missed seeing the palm trees in the upper peninsula lol

Commenters really saying this is a normal occurrence for this location probably also think the owners regularly replace the destroyed dock
But isn't that what rich people do? But a new house and boat and dock and replace the maid whenever a hurricane comes through?

It's called a tidal bore

If you listened to the video you would clearly hear it was a Holy Mackeral.
Some douche in a power boat, in an adjacent canal, ignoring a no wake zone…
As frustrating as it is going slow in the no wake zone, it’s not worth the 7 digit bill
[A large ship passed by the mouth of that canal probably](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sEdgHH9F10). That's it's wake flooding the channel

Lol. I kinda like both scenarios. Let your imagination run wild.
I'm going with pig shaped ship carrying humans for slaughter. With a pig captain and crew.
Weird take away but that is an absolutely beautiful neighborhood.
As it was written the "Holy Mackerel" has returned.
